Gnarls Barkley Banned

The video for Gnarls Barkley's new single, "Run," may feature a cameo from Justin Timberlake, but it's still not quite ready to air on MTV.

That's because of its strobe effects, which caused the clip to fail the Harding Test -- guidelines established to prevent TV images from triggering epileptic seizures.

However, the video is available on various online outlets, and Gnarls Barkley member Danger Mouse was hopeful the situation could be resolved shortly.

"I don't know exactly what's going on, but we're having issues. I think (the video) is cool. It works for me. But I'm not necessarily that easily seasick," he told Billboard.com. "We can't predict how people are going to interpret it."

Anyone know if there's any truth to the seizure reports? I remember going to a mall as a kid that had flashing lights that people claimed would cause seizures. But the lights remained, and I never heard of a seizure. So is this like the food allergy thing or is this an actual problem? Just curious...

Flashing combinations of light patterns do cause seizures in some people.

Except nobody really knows what those patterns are. The Harding Test is a (quite expensive) piece of software based mostly on theory. Videos that pass it have still induced seizures. The original guidelines were actually modified after the famous Pokemon episode because they wouldn't have caught it (it wasn't tested).

Just another way to leech off of the production budgets of everything (and eventually it will be absolutely EVERYTHING) that goes on TV.

Here's an idea. How about doing something other than sitting around watching TV? Even if it doesn't cause a seizure, it certainly will cause STUPIDITY!

It's an actual problem. The problem got a lot of publicity a few years back when a cartoon in Japan induced thousands of seizures in children.

Its hard to believe that a such a big guy can sound that much like a female singer.

Loki: interesting choice for a name. Are your roots Scandanavian or Native American?

The video made me slightly queasy. Other than that, it looks good.

MTV doesn't play videos so what's the problem again?

Very retro tune. The video reminded me of a cross between american bandstand and soul train and justin timberlake in that 80's michael jackson jacket is too funny. I liked it! However, I can easily see how it could fail the Harding test beginning about 2 minutes and 8 seconds into the video with the crazy graphics. It's a legitimate worry as it has been shown that flashing images, at the proper frequency, can trigger epileptic seizures. A minor rework of the video should fix the problem.

My best friend has had several grand mal seizures in his life -- all triggered by strobe-light effect.. His first seizure occurred while driing along side a forest of pine trees near sunset, and as sun popped in and out of view as he drove past the trees the stoble-light effect triggered the seizure. I certainly see how the video could cause seizures.

My niece had her first seizure at thirteen walking into strobed disco. It awful for the girls (mostly girls, btw) who get this and they remain on drugs for years afterwards. Nice that someone has found a standard to prevent it from happening while watching television.

I can see it causing a seizure...but only because of how crappy the music is....

Very sixties-ish, the graphics, the dancers' styles, and, the entire melody of the song was like one line from the refrain of a Steppenwolf song over and over. Fine with me, but nothing remarkable (beyond the digital graphics). Danceable, anyway, if it was played somewhere that I happened to be.
