Rep. Ellison: Clinton Trying To Reap Benefit Of Obama-Muslim Smear

The Clinton campaign flatly denies any hand in the Obama-is-a-Muslim smear campaign that has bubbled beneath the media surface, but it is more than willing to take advantage of it, says the lone Muslim member of congress.

Rep. Keith Ellison, in an interview with The Huffington Post, said the Clinton camp was "opportunistically trying to reap the benefit" of voter concerns about Obama's religious beliefs. Ellison, who is a declared supporter of Senator Barack Obama, faced fierce religious attacks in his election to congress two years ago.

"People are going to throw some stuff on the wall and see what sticks and at this point the Clinton camp is trying to do whatever it can to be successful," said the Minnesota Democrat. "And if that means benefiting from political bigotry, I don't think they will try to put a stop to it."

Ellison's comments came two days after the CBS news magazine 60 Minutes ran a segment last Sunday in which a male voter explained how he was influenced by the fallacious Muslim smear campaign against Obama. Later in the show, Clinton was asked if she believed the rumors.

"Of course not," said the New York Democrat. "I mean, that's -- you know, there is no basis for that. You know, I take him on the basis of what he says. And, you know, there isn't any reason to doubt that."

Asked by correspondent Steve Kroft whether she was taking Obama at his word or personally believed he was not a Muslim, Clinton expanded on her answer: "No. No. Why would I? ... There is nothing to base that on, as far as I know."

For Ellison, the qualifiers in both Clinton statements demonstrated at least a partial attempt to further seed voter doubts. While he rejected the idea that Clinton campaign was behind the smear, he wasn't expecting the Clinton camp to thoroughly denounce it either.

"I think that Barack Obama' s Democratic opponents will say and do anything to try and win," he said. "I don't think there's much doubt of that. And so, I think that pretty much would explain [Clinton's] comments."

Ellison's words constitute some of the most critical reflections on the much-noted 60 Minutes segment. Others have suggested that Clinton's answer, while curiously qualified, was still a repudiation of the Obama-is-a-Muslim attacks. Clinton's supporters and her own campaign have said there was no equivocation in her response to the questions.

"This campaign is focused on the important substantive issues facing our country, and this is a baseless and offensive assertion," Clinton spokesman Jay Carson said. "Senator Clinton has been the victim of smears and scurrilous attacks, she knows how deeply troubling they are and she does not tolerate this kind of behavior."

The issue of Obama's religious origins has not been strictly the purview of the Democratic primary. Rep. Ellison also noted how the GOP has sought to demonize and paint Obama as a Muslim. He offered praise - albeit scant - to Sen. John McCain for distancing himself from comments made by a surrogate, in which Obama's middle name, "Hussein" was scornfully and frequently repeated. But he also warned of using religion as a political wedge issue, arguing that it was a practical assault on one of the pillars of the U.S. constitution.

"The people who would be offended by [Muslim smear campaigns], are people who have embraced American pluralism as a value and therefore would be open to Obama," Ellison said. "I think pluralism is under attack in America. I think it is under attack all over the world... But I think pluralism is going to win out because that represents the best instinct and the best values of people."

Ellison is right on. If I were him I would be furious. I've written this before: this is supposed to an historic year with a Black and a woman seriously vying for the presidency. It should speak to how far this country has come, but apparently that doesn't yet apply to religious preference. I you can get past what Arianna calls the "lizard brain" in you (which is real and controls our most basic irrational instincts, like fear and self-presevation) you know that it is a tiny minority of twisted fanatical Muslims who are "out to get us". So what if Barack was Muslim, which he is not? The questions about Mitt Romney's Mormonism were equally nauseating. His dad was a pretty good guy, as I recall. And there are other Mormons in the government, like them or not, who don't seem to let their beliefs get in the way of trying to run a country as well as they can. Ability, intelligence, judgement and honesty are what we should look for. For Heaven's sake, we survived a Catholic President without being taken over by the Vatican. Get beyond that lizard brain!

Ellison needs to shut-up. He's the one keeps this stuff going. Who cares what Obama's middle name is, or what religion he practices. Let's move on.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:25 PM on 03/06/2008

How can you say "let's move on" when it's an attack angle that someone has tried to exploit and has done successfully. Look at the man from Ohio who thought that Obama was a Muslim. How many time has Obama mentioned being a Christian and this guy has doubts because he "heard" this or that. As much as religion should not be a factor in this election (as well as race or gender), somebody figured that they could take advantage of the fears and ignorances of the American public.

Hilary's so called "repudiation" should have been stronger followed by the condemnation of this attack, not the qualifier, "as far as I know". This does leave the air of doubt.

This is all a politically correct joke. Hillary can't get a break..She answers the question on 60 minutes 5 times...and Steve Kroft keeps after her..
Barack would have never been so insulted with that line of questioning.
I've seen every name in the book on these blogs thrown at Hillary and yet say something even remotely ambiguous about Obama and suddenly it's 'racist'.
This election is all about popularity and nothing about who'd be the best to lead our country over the next 4 - 8 years.
Hillary has been so disrespected on this blog it makes me wonder why I spent all of those years as a democrat. Democrats are absolutely no better than the people they constantly attack on the GOP side.
OK well, that might be a stretch...but not by much.
I would gaurantee you that if Barack Obama were white, he'd be having a squirel stew with Huckabbee.
Barack is the 'novelty' candidate. He delivers great oratory and preaches on the stump as good as any Baptist minister but he's no John F Kennedy nor Martin Luther King. We know so little about Barack possibly because of his drug taking past and his extremely short time in the senate, that it is differcult to criticize him. Barack Obama is the porcelin president..careful not to examine him too closely because Baracks myth may shatter.

"I WOULD GUARANTEE YOU THAT IF BARACK OBAMA WERE WHITE, HE'D BE HAVING A SQUIRREL STEW WITH HUCKABEE."

Isn't it great when ignorance and racism raises its ugly head. So we can pull from your quote above (I corrected the misspelled words) that because Obama is black, that's the only reason why he's still in this race? I bet your still wishing it was pre-Civil Rights Act of 1964 so African Americans could be blocked from voting (who got rid of those Jim Crowe laws anyway, he should be lynched), after all they are the ones that are voting for him in every state huh.

It is amazing when people don't get it. One of the main reasons the Clintons lost the support of the African American community is that the both of them tried to make Sen. Obama look like he was nothing and especially not worthy of running against his wife. Then they let all of the their surrogates come out and berate Sen. Obama. Bob's Kerry and Johnson, Govt Ed Rendell with the comment that white guys would not vote for him, NAFTA GATE, the lie that possibly cost Obama the win in Ohio, fear mongering, and the Big One Endorsing John McCain over someone in her own Party. Even CNN, MSNBC Talking heads were amazed. Win at all cost attitude. Jesse Jackson comments, that raised the eyebrows of some in the Black community who had let the other things past.

In the debates, Clinton trties to talk down to him like he is not her equal, and U. S. Senator just like she is. Witness her tirade "SHame on you Barack Obama" I don't know about you but that sounds like a Mother sending a child to sit in the corner. Lets not forget the fact that she criticizes all of the supporters and voters who vote for him as "pie in the sky delusional, drank the kool aid types."

Need I go on. There are more, but too numerous to list.

We will not win with the politics of divisiveness. We will not create the conditions for a national transformation nor will a national reconciliation be possible under the leadership of people like Hillary Clinton. All fair minded people no matter what party must repudiate the politics of fear and smear.

Hillary is right about her experience with right wing attacks. She has perfected them into HER OWN weapons of choice even against other democrats

You are so blinded by your worship of Obama that you are going so far as blaming Senator Clinton for her attacks by the Right Wing Conspiracy Apparatus.

No he's not, and neither is Rep. Ellison: Hillary Clinton is probably not the source of the rumors, but she's allowing them to fester. "There's nothing to base that on, as far as I know?" How about "No, he's a Christian. We've been to prayer breakfasts together. Everybody knows he's a Christian." Some kind of firm statement.

"I take him at his word." God, what a hack.

It's so sad that we are being divided by Identity Politics.

I don't understand how the Clintons are getting virtually no support from the African-American community when they have always had such a strong bond with them.

It is very disconcerting that nearly ALL African-Americans, whether average voters or political leaders are backing Obama. That tells me they are mainly choosing their candidate by Race.

The numbers are staggering. I understand the connection, but surely Senator Clinton would represent the African-American community as well as Obama.

If Whites thought that way, Hillary would be winning by a landslide.

It just shows what a divided country we still are - very sad.

It doesn't help when you make a comment comparing Obama's presidential campaign to that of Jesse Jackson, insinuating that it will eventually fail. What is is saying about Jesse Jackson's campaign. He could have compared it to the campaigns of Bill Bradley or Dick Gephardt or Ross Perot.

Also when you make a comment that gives the perception that what MLK did with his oratory and marches was just that, a "dream" until President LBJ, made it into law (this was seen as diminishing of a main that fought hard for the Civil Rights of African Americans). Kudos for LBJ for signing the act in to law but this would have never had happened if MLK hadn't done his part to organize the voice of the people (all races included) against the status quo.

For the Clintons it has been a case of open mouth insert foot.

Clinton's non-existant support among African-Americans can be traced to South Carolina. It's a good indicator of whether or not her campaign was engaged in race-baiting.

Obama says he can win the General and Hillary can't. I don't believe him. He seems like a nice man and a good poker player. But why make him President?

My question is - why would most Americans fall for choosing a newcomer to become President? And why would we fall for Obama saying he can win the General?

We have not had any time to even see him react to anything a bit? His negatives will sky rocket once a little time goes by.

He is a newcomer. Americans will not make a newcomer President. This is where the word "naive" occurs to me.

When I see Obama as a tele evangelist and somewhat of a pacifist, he isn't very likeable to me.

When I see him as a politician, like everyone else, he is less likeable.

He definately hides behind the preachers podium for a reason. It makes it harder to see him for what he is. A flawed person like all of us.

But with enormous ambition.

There is a seasoning I require when it comes to choosing the right leader for all of us.

The Democrats as a party, have been maligned for not showing our colors enough. I want to show my colors.

I love this country and do not want a newcomer leading us.

And thus Clinton supporters begin to talk themselves into voting for McCain.

One would think moral and political principles would stand in the way of that, but it remains to be seen.

And so the pissed off progressive base will leave and vote in droves for Nader if Clinton continues to lie and steal the nomination. And you will end up with President McCain.

KCKen See Profile I'm a Fan of KCKen

Those HRC folks you refer to that were fired in Novemeber - well, that's where it all began! So, again, who initiated this bigotry? The photo of Obama in Somali garb, btw, was acknowledged as having been generated by the HRC campaign by Maggie, the chair of the campaign, but she deliberately waited until that news day was over. And now HRC has a campaign ad out that shows Obama quite a bit 'darker' than he actually is. Why would you not believe HRC is capable of this?

*****************************************************************

Do you have proof for any of your assertions?

The photo of Obama in African garb was published on February 4th in the National Examiner and posted on the far-right Sweetness & Light blog the day before Drudge published it. I haven't seen any evidence of Maggie Williams acknowledging it coming from the Clinton campaign, but I'll certainly look for it. I'm fair that way.

I don't give a lot of merit to the DKos diary assertion about purposeful darkening of Obama's image - just yesterday there was a progression of photos in the lead on HuffPo, all from screen captures and guess what? Obama just like everyone else appeared as different shades.

Finally, I am on more email lists than you could ever imagine, not once - ONCE - have I received one of those hateful emails about Obama - wonder why that is? I don't belong to any lists that are on the right. Nor do I associate with many republicans.

Hillary creates doubt that he's a muslim.

Hillary has a TV commercial make him look "blacker".

Hillary has Bill impune Obama's victory in S. Carolina as just a "black" victory, like Jesse Jackson's.

Hillary AND Bill play the race card over and over in Nevada.

And she thinks she'll get African-American support in November? What sad delusion.

Hello, President McCain.

This is another example of the Obama campaign playing the race card. If you watch the interview she is emphaticly saying "NO". But then racists like Ellison parse the words and try to make her look like a bigot. I think the opposite is true....... doesn't the fact that 9 of 10 blacks vote against her because she's a white woman reveal the true racism and misogyny?

I wonder why the All-Talk-Barack fanatics don't attack the media for a entertaining such stupid questions to begin with.

The sad part of this whole story is that Senator Obama is defending himself (or being forced to defend himself) by denying that he is a Muslim. In other words, he and his supporters who rail against the false label are indirectly helping to demonize Muslims. I understand their position and their fear that if they don't, he will be unelectable. But it is just that it is a sad commentary on the state of affairs.

Senator Clinton should be ashamed of herself for this one. Deeply and profoundly ashamed of herself. She does not refrain from anything to win. And, to all of you who are her supporters, keep in mind that she will not refrain from anything if she gets to the White House. Is that the president you want to have?

Yes, she's the president I want to have. Obama supporters should look in the mirror. You're totally Orwellian, accusing the opposition of everything your candidate is actually doing. Obama learned that one from the neoCons really well.

tkk: She's not the president you'd HAVE (if she were to steal the election). YOU are the person who would be HAD by her. Clintonne was on the board of directors of Wal-Mart. Have you read about how they treat their employees, manufacturers? Wal-Mart ALONE has taken millions of manufacturing jobs from the USA, based on what Hubby, Bilk Linton, arranged with China. She supported her husband's signing of NAFTA, which has taken more jobs away from your fellow Americans.
You, tkk, need to do some reading and...start with 1984 (Orwell) then go to Brave New World (Huxley) then watch "Wag the Dog," and "Brazil."

Come on...this false propagation that Barack Obama is Muslim is simply the most ignorant type of propaganda...he received his middle name from his father...the man is a christian by his own claim and by historical fact. You think that this country could possibly be any more corrupt than it is now?? No blood for oil...no mansions for the rich and chains of debt to the poor. Obama is the hope of this nation because he brings unity to the country...do you wan't this war in Iraq and Afghanistan and in a growing portion of the Middle East to end or do you like bloodshed? Obama is perhaps the only candidate who can end the war...FACT: The Middle East and most of the world despises Hillary Clinton and John McCain...FACT: The name Hussein is revered in the Arab world and would most likely encourage peaceful movements and talks in the region unlike Hillary and McCain's overwhelming military "commander in cheif" stance. As for rhetoric, that is politics, Obama can deliver, now rhetoric with the intent to mislead, that is propaganda...where are Hillary's funds coming from? How can we trust a veiled candidate? Obama doesn't need to hide from shame because there is none where he's coming from. Vote Obama...for citizens of all backgrounds...if you are not financially secure Barack is the candidate fighting for you.

Well there is clearly a growing concern about names in this country...from Clinton and the implications of that name (keep in mind that Hillary inherited that name and her fame)...to Barack Hussein Obama and the knee-jerk reactions to his given name. It is fact that one cannot be properly identified by a name...eight years ago, who thought that George Bush or Dick Cheney wasn't a bit laughable or gave us a "homely" feeling...look at what that has got us...a wire-tapped nation, and a financially-tapped citizenry...The name Hussein can be seen here courtesy of "Thinkbabynames.com" The boy's name Hussein hu(s)-sein is pronounced hoo-SAYN. It is of Arabic origin, and its meaning is "good; small handsome one". The name of a prominent person in Shiite Islam and a royal name in Jordan. (thinkbabynames.com)
Not only did Barack Hussein Obama not choose his given name...but his middle name literally means good...
If we take a more broad perspective on this world situation, specifically between the Middle East and the U.S.A. we can quite easily see that there is a war going on...Now as much as we would like to think that this war is one sided and we are fighting "terror", that is simply not true...at a base level we are humans fighting humans and we all have feelings and views...sometimes quite intense ones...
Hopefully as a nation we are all looking towards an end to this war and peace during these war torn times?? Correct me if I am wrong...
The Middle East, specifically Arab countries are quite familiar with the name Hussein and it is popular and welcoming to their ears...Is this not a beneficial, "shoe-in" to talks of peace and the waning of this war? No other candidate can claim to have this edge in the situations lingering in the Middle East...
If we as Americans ever hope to have peace again...we must look towards Barack Hussein Obama for hope...The world loves him...the citizens of America love him...and in growing numbers we show our support...End the War...End the fear the Bush administration has implanted into our minds...and start anew with change...start on a 'good' foot...
BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT IN '08!!!!!!! The GOOD guy!!!!

I keep hoping/wishing that Obama would show up at a rally and start off his speech with: "I am Barack Hussein Obama. I am proud of my middle name because it was given to me by my father. I will not denounce it because it holds certain unfavorable political implications for me. I will no longer pander to the dark side of our nation. I deplore the unfortunate inferrence that the many law-abiding, patriotic Muslim citizens in this country should consider themselves exempt from ever attaining the office that I now seek. I am Barack Hussein Obama, and I will be your next President!"

The level of palpable invective is amazing -- thank goodness this hostility is being played out by banging on a keyboard.

A couple of things -- the whole "Muslim" issue is nothing more than another Oborg race-baiting attempt to stir the masses. If you look at the exit polls, it certainly did its work.

Something other things that are bothersome: why is it new politics when superdelegates are being funnelled campaign funds three to one by the Oborg campaign for their support? Why is it new politics when the AA superdelegates are being threatened by primaries if they don't cast their votes for Obama? Only the AA members of Congress -- I find that quite troubling.

I've got to hand it to the Oborg campaign, slickest, most adroit use of race in any national campaign in the history of the country. We can't criticize, we can't question -- all the while using it all as an offense without leaving any fingerprints.

Well done with the historic stylings of Nixon, Reagan, W and Rove. In keeping with the style, the boundless pursuant of power for the sake of the power ends in the shallowness of the pursuer.

What does it remind you of? Remember what happened just around the time the war started? If you dared say anything against it, you were branded a traitor, and as Ari Fleisher, that liar, said , one had to watch out for what they said? So the Obama campaign, full of scheming Repig troll provocateurs, adopted the same ridiculous idea, this time substituting the "racism" charge as a means of deflecting any criticism from Obama...well, now it's over...the man is going to get the full scrutiny he should have gotten way before the first primary or caucus.
