WASHINGTON — Barack Obama regained lost ground in the fierce competition for Democratic convention delegates on Wednesday based on results from the Texas caucuses, partially negating the impact of Hillary Rodham Clinton's string of comeback primary victories.

Late returns showed Clinton emerged from Rhode Island, Vermont, Texas and Ohio with a gain of 12 delegates on her rival for the night, with another dozen yet to be awarded in The Associated Press' count.

That left Obama with an overall lead of 101 delegates, 1,562-1,461 as the rivals look ahead to the final dozen contests on the calendar. It takes 2,025 to win the nomination.

The two presidential contenders made the rounds of the morning television news shows, agreeing on little _ except that their historic struggle would continue at least until the Pennsylvania primary on April 22.

That left six weeks for public campaigning, and for private appeals to party leaders, known as superdelegates, who attend the convention but are not chosen in primaries or caucuses.

Clinton has the support of 241 superdelegates, and Obama 202. But more than 350 remain uncommitted, a large enough bloc to swing the nomination should they band together.

Clinton, in particular, projected confidence on the day after her candidacy-saving victories, suggesting she might want Obama as her vice presidential running mate.

"That may be where this is headed, but of course we have to decide who is on the top of ticket. I think the people of Ohio very clearly said that it should be me," she said on CBS.

Obama brushed such talk aside. "We are just focused on winning this nomination," he told reporters aboard his chartered campaign jet en route to Chicago from Texas.

He said he would prevail in the nominating battle despite facing a tenacious candidate who "just keeps on ticking."

Democrats plunged into the next round of their campaign as Republican John McCain visited the White House to confirm his status as the party's nominee-in-waiting. Lunch with President Bush _ and an endorsement _ headlined his day.

Bitter rivals in the 2000 presidential primaries, the two have forged an uneasy relationship during Bush's administration and have clashed on issues such as campaign finance, tax cuts, global warming and defining torture.

There were 370 Democratic delegates at stake in Tuesday's contests, and nearly complete returns showed Clinton outpaced Obama in Ohio, 74-65, in Rhode Island, 13-8, and in the Texas primary, 65-61.

Obama won in Vermont, 9-6, and was ahead in the Texas caucuses, 30-27. Ten of the dozen that remained to be awarded were in Texas; the other two in Ohio.

"We still have an insurmountable lead," Obama said.

Clinton and Obama spent most of the past two weeks in Ohio and Texas in a bruising campaign, with the former first lady questioning his sincerity in opposing the North American Free Trade Agreement and darkly hinting he's not ready to be commander in chief in a crisis.

Based on their current delegate counts, neither candidate can win enough delegates in the remaining primaries and caucuses to secure the nomination without the help of nearly 800 party officials and top elected officials who also have a voice in the selection. On Wednesday, Clinton and her campaign clearly aimed their case at those so-called "superdelegates" _ a strategy that could take the nomination fight all the way to the party's August national convention in Denver.

"New questions are being raised, new challenges are being put to my opponent," she said. "Superdelegates are supposed to take all that information on board and they are supposed to be exercising the judgment that people would have exercised if this information and challenges had been available several months ago."

She said voters are being drawn to her argument that she would be the better commander in chief, the best steward of the economy and that she can better confront McCain in the general election.

Obama countered that on a key national security issue _ the war in Iraq _ "she got it wrong" by supporting Bush's call for authority to use military force.

As for superdelegates, Obama said he expected them to rally around him.

"I don't think it will necessarily go to the convention floor," he told reporters aboard his plane before taking off from San Antonio for Chicago.

He also said he will challenge Clinton on her foreign policy credentials.

"Was she negotiating treaties? Was she handling crises? The answer is no," he said. "She made a series of arguments on why she should be a superior candidate. I think it's important to examine that argument."

The count does not include delegates from Florida and Michigan, who were penalized by the Democratic Party for moving up their primaries ahead of a schedule set by the Democratic National Committee. None of the Democratic candidates campaigned in either state. But Clinton, who won the popular vote in both state primaries, on Wednesday renewed her call for Florida and Michigan to be counted in the nomination race.

"It's a mistake for the Democratic Party to punish these two states," she said. "I don't see how a Democratic nominee goes forward alienating two of the most important states."

McCain surpassed the 1,191 delegates needed to win his party's nomination against odds that seemed steep only a few months ago, and all but impossible last summer.

Facing a couple of well-financed marquee candidates in a crowded field, the Arizona senator opened his comeback in New Hampshire's leadoff primary, rolled over Rudy Giuliani in Florida and finished off Mitt Romney after Super Tuesday on Feb. 5.

Mike Huckabee hung in until Tuesday night, gamely keeping up the fight weeks after dropping from long shot to afterthought.

Everybody is trying to guess why Obama lost especially TX. I'll tell you why:

1) It is not because of Mark Penn.
2) It is not because of the 3am ad.
3) It is not because Clinton was playing the victim while attacking.

It is because of NAFTA and the perception that Obama is a fraud and that he may not be a fighter.

Obama, you need to call a press conference when ever you can and adress it again. Answer questions about Rezko to the satisfaction of the reporters. Ofcourse not the silly questions like "how many fundraiser?", it doesn't matter because you gave the money to charity.

You have to emphatically say that you are ready to become commander in chief when asked again. Also make it known that you will attack Republicans if you have to, but you are not trying to divide the party by attacking Sen. Clinton. You should openly chastize Sen. Clinton for batting for the other team when she ranked you below McCain. You don't have to say all these things but at least have your aides ask the questions.

Those who support Hillary here, please drop her a few dollars for the next part of the campaign.
i just sent her another hundred.
If we each send her a few dollars,- just what we can spare - it will make her more compettitive and the total race more fair.

Only 3 wins out of the past 16 after a zero for eleven streak is NOT momemtum... it's called a losing streak. Stop the insanity and get behind the winner not the whinner! As Hillary and Dubya would say "It's Hard Work" not that either had EVER done any to know... but do the math...I know it's hard...but Just do the math... Slate.com has a calculator or you can get a pencil and paper....NO matter how much whinning and complaining...No matter how many times you watched some stupid skit on SNL.... No matter how you slice it or how Hillary Rodman Clinton trys so desperately to spin this....Even if Hillary Rodman Clinton wins every state in all of the next primaries.... she will be short delegates. No matter how you cut it, Obama will almost certainly end the primaries with a pledged-delegate lead, courtesy of all those landslides in February.

So she can either keep up her Republican Bush-Rove scorched earth policy showing her true colors and tear up the Democratic Party or become a Real Democrat and throw in the towel ... no wonder losers like Limpbaugh threw in with HRC yesterday....it's OVER Ms. Clinton turn out the lights the party is over! You cannot win a General Election so either get behind it or get out of the way of the Obama steamroller.

Clinton didn't exactly "wipe the floor" with Obama. What she actually did was almost blow nearly insurmountable leads in both TX and OH in about two weeks. BTW, Obama will likely get more delegates in TX than Clinton. I don't think she can take too many more floor wipings like that.

The problem is not the Democratic Party. The problem is the two party system where BOTH parties support the plutarchy (Wall Street), one overtly and the other covertly, while maintaining that they answer to the voters. It's a classic dog and pony show to keep the masses docile while the real control of the country never changes. it's a basic subversion of democracy in its very form.

How come none of the Hillary supporters want to answer these questions:

Why did Hillary side with the NeoCons on Iraq war authorization?

Why did Hillary oppose Levin Amendment?

Why did Hillary support Kyl/Lieberman Amendment?

Anyone wants to take a shot at answering those questions for us? Or her consistent support for NeoCons policies is no longer an issue for those who claim to be against this war, and against the NeoCons?

I mean, these are basic questions on one of the major foreign policy debacles in decades.

I am not being mean. I am asking questions that should have been at the top from day one. And I intend to keep asking these questions.

All those who claim to be against the war, and criticze Bush and McCain for it, can take a shot at answering these questions.

In my view, these are extremely important questions that Hillary must be forced to answer.

I can't answer why - because I'm not in her mind or her heart.

I have trouble with her MAUF vote because she didn't support the Levin amendment. I was furious when she voted for it - but I've since moderated, mostly because she was a senator from NY, and though 9/11 and Iraq were not related, I understand why she may have felt that she was voting for what her constituents wanted. The failure to vote for the Levin amendment is troublesome - but she did try to do something with Byrd.

I didn't like her Kyl-Lieberman vote especially either, but Obama isn't pure on it either - he didn't show up.

I'd like to hear an explanation from her on the clusterbomb vote as well.

I stopped being actively supportive or sending her money after she failed to show up for the last round of FISA votes.

9/11 and Iraq were not related, I understand why she may have felt that she was voting for what her constituents wanted.
----------
Let's analyze that. The public was fooled to think that 9/11 was connected to Iraq, then she went with the wishes of the people who had been fooled.

That I find despicable. She chose political expediency over doing the right thing in a matter of war and peace.

Is that good judgment? Is that what we want in a President? Again? And we are not talking about an issue that meant a few more dollars for her constituents or an earmark. This was an issue of immense consequences.

So, even with this relatively charitable explanation in her favor, I must seriously question not only her judgment, but her motive.

As you said yourself, you were mad at her vote against Levin amendment.

If you did a bit of research on Obama's absence on Kyl/Lieberman, you would find that he was told that the vote was scheduled a weak later. He left town, and they held the vote the next day. He missed it.

Overall, as I have been saying, one might have doubts about Obama's votes, but there are no questions about Hillary. She has consistently voted with the NeoCons.

In view of that, I return to wondering how anyone oppposed to the NeoCons and the war can possibly choose Hillary over Obama.

The only explanation I can give is that all this talk about being against the unimaginable suffering of Iraqis is just talk. This is not an issue that has dictated how people voted. And I find that shocking and sad.

Apparently the voters last night think "Hillary delivers" but "Obama inspires" according to CNN.

Can't argue with that. I've really been enjoying that universal health care we've had since 1993. And I know New Yorkers are enjoying those 200,000 new jobs she delivered. Oops, my bad.

But, seriously, who hasn't enjoyed that Iraq War that she helped to deliver in 2002?

As an "Unrepentant Imperialist", I support the war...and maybe..just maybe she supports it too. As all you dickheads say, we are an empire, so deal with it. Don't worry, your little wet dreams of our empire crumbling will come true soon enough, as all empires before it. I'm just disgusted with your wimpy assertions. We didn't become an empire by smoking pot and launching flower pedal bombs. Like every other empire in world history, we got there by the sword. So, we'll die by the sword. Stop being cowards, and two-faced.
"Anyone who clings to the historically untrue- and thoroughly immoral- doctrine that violence never settles anything I would advise to conjure up the ghosts of Napoleon Bonaparte and the Duke of Wellington and let them debate it. The ghost of Hitler would referee. Violence, naked force, has settled more issues in history than has any other factor, and the contrary opinion is wishful thinking at it's worst. Breeds that forgot this basic truth have always paid for it with their lives and their freedoms."

Hillary can't unite anything except the opposition against her.

The swing/red states WON'T go for Hillary.

She'll alienate the new voters that have come out for B. Obama.

McCain will pick up the independents and he'll end up winning the general election.

Change, it has to start somewhere and Barack Obama is the way to go.

Its 3 am, the red phone is ringing and McCain is in too deep of a sleep to waken... worried aides listen for a heartbeat while his drug addled wife picks up the phone and screams, "STOP CALLING ME!!!". Someone makes the suggestion to call 911... as they're all Republicans this causes a panic and they believe that the United States is being attacked - They run around the room creaming "9/11! Rudy was right, Rudy was right!!!"
(they leave John McCain on the bed as they hide under desks).

- Through all of this pandemonium, John McCain sleeps like a baby.

[Morning]
John McCain wakes up and sees that his wife is quivering in a corner. He sees the shoes of some of his cabinet members as they sit rocking back in forth under a desk - babbling incoherently "9/11...9/11...9/11...9/11".

Later in the day he asks that the lobbyists who are dedicated to his re-election *not* call him at that number and especially at that hour.

Remaining states:

Wyoming 12 delegates
Mississippi - 33 delegates
Pennsylvania -158 delegates
Guam - 4
North Carolina - 115
West Virgina -28
Oregon -52
Kentucky - 51
Montana - 16
South Dakota -15
Puerto Rico - 55

Can anyone see more than 4 states in which Hillary can win? Can anyone make a case on where Hillary makes up 150 delegates? Does anyone see a way in which Obama "doesn't" pick up more delegates than her in the remaining races? I understand why Hillary is going on, but, not one of her supporters can make the case on how Hillary comes out with more Delegates? Go ahead and have a revote in Florida, it changes nothing. Fuck it, use the previous Florida results as they were - she still can't catch up, not even close.

Hillary's and her supporters are relying on HOPE....go figure.
