Portfolio.com's Jeff Bercovici writes today about 'Hitch Bitch,' Vanity Fair's new feature that gives readers the chance to take on the magazine's controversial columnist.

"No V.F. contributing editor arouses more reader ire than our tireless columnist Christopher Hitchens," reads the explanatory note. "VF Daily will post a selection of the sharpest, snappiest, and/or most elegantly reasoned letters, but keep in mind that what you submit may be edited. Please include your full name and hometown--and please, don't write anything you wouldn't want your mother to read."

And the announcement comes not a moment too soon. Hitchens appeared on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" today to critique Hillary Clinton's acceptance speech last night. "You know what struck me as very important and slightly sinister?" says Hitchens, "When she said we won Florida and Michigan." Hitchens notes that the primaries both states were counted out by the Democratic National Committee. "She's like a wounded puma," he muses, "going to fight till the very end for the last delegate even in states that have been written off for that purpose."

Clinton supporters, send those letters in to hitchbitch@vf.com.

Hitchens has refined his act as the articulate drunk, the smartest smartass in class, and he uses his skills to make people hate him, the more the better. He and Andrew Sullivan and other clever schoolboys know they're barely relevant, so they say provocative things to make the crowd gasp. Incisive analysis gets you a minute on NPR; being a loudmouth flamethrower gets you on cable, and apparently it gets you a magazine column, or sorts.

At least he's an intelligent flamethrower. Look at the pathetic Coulter. He's several levels up the food chain from that.

An amoeba is several levels up the food chain from Coulter.

He's not interested in contributing to the conversation, just in selling himself. Please ignore him, everyone, and don't write in.

Coulter, Limbaugh, Hannity, O'Reilly, Beck, Blitzer, Hitchens, they all have one thing in common. In order to agree with or enjoy their comments, your brain needs to be in the twelve year old bracket that their producers require for their productions. Vanity Fair should have moved on a long time ago. Hitchens thinks because he called the war in Iraq, as a necessary war for oil, that we should all revere him. Forget about the million that may be dead as a result. Godless is his own business, but his continuing stupid drivel, driven by his thoughts of his own importance and command of Engish, is very tiresome.

Yes, but then the price of oil was at $32 a barrel or so. Now it is slightly over $100.

I used to despise Hitchens until the publication of "God Is Not Great". At least he's able to come up with ONE original idea that fits with my own observations.

What is the original idea in "God is Not Great"? Atheism is old hat.

OH but Hitch does not used the same tired, old hat arguments. Have you read the book? Some passages had me laughing out loud. Plus he is so brilliant.....and has such command of English and can turn a phrase like no other.

I'd listen to Hitch argue all day; even when I don't necessarily agree with him; and I don't.

He is the type on who I'd have had a MAD crush were he my professor in college days. Good thing for all concerned that is not the case.

I would probably enjoy reading his book, but would never give him any of my money after his slavish support for the war.

Obama's now linked to the Chicago Iraqi mob? The Chicago Iraqi mob? Wow. That's the funniest thing I've read in a long time. How low will you people go to try to bring down a good man? Pathetic.

Man.

Yes, to call someone shallow who has such a record of accomplishment as Obama is a very far reach.

Concerning the Chicago Iraqi mob, this phrase is right-wing paranoia. The fact that Hitchens can throw around such sophomoric charges speaks of his own low credibility and love of soundbites.

Wounded puma! Good one.
Of course, like so many pundits and reporters around the country, he aims to irritate because it sells.

Yeah. Like Coulter, Limbaugh, Hannity, and Olbermann; Hitchens' whole shtick is to be controversial. He just adds a touch of the George Will with his vainglorious verbiage.

I disagree with him profoundly on the Iraq war, but Christopher Hitchens is a lot more than just another pundit; what's more, his literary accomplishments far outstrip all of those names . . . combined.

I'd guess the "puma" line is a typical Hitchens double entendre, being a little too close (but defensible) to a milf cougar.
