Clinton Aides Compare Obama To Ken Starr

stumble digg reddit del.ico.us news trust

Aides to Sen. Hillary Clinton accused Sen. Barack Obama of adopting Republican talking points and acting like Ken Starr for launching a more aggressive campaign following his losses in Texas, Ohio, and Rhode Island on Tuesday.

Citing few specific instances in which Obama had averted to GOP form, Howard Wolfson, Clinton's chief spokesperson, nevertheless denounced the Illinois Senator's new rhetoric, such as pressing for Clinton to release her tax returns and contrasting his dealings with indicted Chicago-insider Tony Rezko to her investments in Whitewater.

"I for one do not believe that imitating Ken Starr is not the way to win the Democratic primary," he said, referencing the Clinton-era special prosecutor who is despised by Democrats.

The accusations came a day after the Obama campaign pledged to go on the offensive in their nomination fight. That strategic decision, in turn, was spurred by attacks the Clinton campaign had launched against Obama, questioning his ability to be commander in chief or a "steward" of the economy. When asked why it was okay for the Clinton campaign to adopt this style of campaigning but not for Obama, Anne Lewis, a high-ranking aide to the New York Senator, responded:

"The voters are going to decide what is fair. We thought it was striking that one day after a hard fought campaign... what we have heard is a series of personal attacks against Sen. Hillary Clinton, and again, some of them echoed Republican charges against Sen. Clinton that have been raised over the years and failed."

The Obama campaign responded swiftly to the accusation, calling it "absurd" that the "Clinton campaign believes that they should be held to an entirely different standard."

Wrote spokesperson Bill Burton in an email to reporters:

"We don't believe that expecting candidates for the presidency to disclose their tax returns somehow constitutes Ken Starr-tactics, but the kind of transparency and accountability that Americans are looking for and that's been missing in Washington for far too long. And if Senator Clinton doesn't think that the Republicans will ask these very same questions, then she's not as ready to go toe-to-toe with John McCain as she claims."

The back and forth between the campaigns underscores the bitterness of the prolonged and increasingly divisive Democratic Party, in which each candidate is looking for even the slightest of political edges. Prior to accusing Obama for being "unable to make an affirmative case for his candidacy," the Clinton camp had criticized him for being all hope and rhetoric and no substance.

Later in Thursday's conference call, a reporter reminded Lewis that many political observers had interpreted Clinton's "3 A.M." advertisement to be a derivative of the traditionally Republican use of fear for political purposes. Was it not Clinton who was parodying the GOP?

"The Republicans have, in shameful ways, used fear to divide us," Lewis responded. "But I did not see our phone ad in that way. I thought it was a positive ad. I think it is important for Democrats to take on that issue and say, you know what, Democrats are going to be responsible for our security... we should not kid ourselves that if we don't mention the word it will not come up."

Late Update:

Obama adviser Greg Craig, who spent many years defending the Clinton's from Ken Starr, offered his take in a late afternoon conference call with reporters:

It really is one of the most outrageous things I've heard form the Clintons in a long time. I spent a good deal of my time getting to know and fighting Ken Starr. And Barack Obama is not Ken Starr. Mr. Wolfson apparently doesn't know the difference between someone like Ken Starr who abused his power and who caused a constitutional crisis. And someone who is simply doing what most Americans expect of a presidential candidate, asking for the release of tax returns. It is, to me, astonishing to think that someone can conceive of running for president of the United States without releasing their tax returns. And to call for the release of tax returns seems to me to be rather routine.

The big point most Americans missed about Ken Starr's role in Whitewater et al

was his gatekeeper role in keeping GHWB out of the investigations that swirled

around Bill and Hillary. It was a witch hunt that was steered widely around all the

GHWB, CIA, Iran/Contra, cocaine and Mena Airport connections to the Clintons.

Actually where are Sen Clinton's tax returns? They can't scrub them.. How much longer will She delay producing them? I'm sure theres nothing in them that should cause her concern... After all she is a sitting US Senator and the US citizen knows that all elected officials tax returns should be squeaky clean... Just produce the documents.

And right on cue, Samantha calls HIllary a monster, vindicating Penn's characterization of the Obama campaign as nothing more than the old Republican smear campaign led by Starr.

Penn must be grinning today.

Penn is probably stuffing his fat face with more donuts.

Hillary is not a monster. Hillary is a BITCH. She liked it when Tina Fey called her one. Liked it so much she went on SNL the next week and played funny.

It's okay to call Hillary a BITCH. Just don't call her a monster.

Each camp is probably on the other's last nerve at this point. What do you expect? It is, however, hardly "vindication" of Penn's characterization. Ms. Powers had the grace to apologize and resign. Even Hillary hasn't shown THAT much class, as far as HER team is concerned.

Old Republican smear campaign? Have you been at all paying attention to what has been coming out of the HRC camp? Do you really expect the Obama team to simply continue to take the abuse, innuendo, misrepresentation, and flat out lies from Hllary & Co. and not respond?

One of the accusation leveled at Senator Obama is that he's not "tough enough" to be commander-in-chief. So, according to your logic, it's totally acceptable for Hillary and her minions to behave as though they've been studying campaign tactics at the foot of Karl Rove, but when Barack Obama's team and supporters fight back, they get compared to Ken Starr? Ah, yeah. Okay.

No wonder Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh are cheering for Hillary.

Haha. You mean besides the fact that Hillary openly advocates for John McCain and degrades a member of her own party? When she gets back to the Senate she going to have a lot less friends than she does now.

Ah, you should probably check-out the sources you're using before you bring them here as "authoritative" in support of your position.

If you take a closer look at JudicialWatch.org, you will discover that they don't like anybody!

I know where you were trying to go with this, and I agree. I just wish you'd bring better ammunition to the gun fight.

Funny thing. I loathed Starr during the impeachment scam. Now that Wolfson has brought him up, I find myself kind of wishing he'd won. President Clinton destroyed the soul of the Democratic Party; now his consort aims to destroy its shell. That's okay. The Phoenix is a beautiful myth and its time has come to rise out of the ashes of our corrupt political sytem, the Clintons being the prime symbol of that system.

I hated him too and supported the Clintons thru that entire mess.

How the Clinton camp can even bring up the name of Starr is beyond me (never mind compare Obama to him which is beyond ridiculous!!). Do they really want us to remember all the sleaze of that time?

And what is so Ken Starr-ish about demanding the release of her tax returns???

First question for debate next month: SENATOR CLINTON, WHY HAVE YOU NOT YET RELEASED YOUR TAX RETURNS FOR THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS???
And PLEASE when she hems and haws thru her answer and spins it into talking about something else altogether, I hope to God the moderator doesn't let her slide but keeps on her case about it. Don't we want to know where the $5M that she loaned her campaign came from?

Also, has the campaign paid it back? Is all this legal (I don't know and I wish someone would explain it to me. Of course, looking at my checkbook, finances are not my area of expertise, unfortunately).

Another question - how in God's name, do the Clintons justify accepting $10M from the royal family of Saudi Arabia for the Clinton presidential library? Saudi Arabia - where most of the 9/11 hijackers came from; where women can't even drive a car; where public BEHEADINGS are held; where a woman had been sentenced to death for being a WITCH. Sounds like the Bush family to me, having such close ties with those royals.

You would think Ken Starr is the LAST name they would want to bring up to the American consciousness. No one remembers that he was wrong on technicalities of destroyed and missing records. That is the Clinton spin.

But everyone will remember the fact he had to be brought in to investigate in the 1st place: scandalous Clinton slime.

I came back on Wednesday through DFW airport. I was not in the mood to be in Texas after the debacle in Ohio etc ... I knew that the Clintons' used slimy tactics --- but, I just wanted to go home ... I was going to have a house full of young people going to Langarado ... Anyway, I went outside on my layover to smoke a cigarette (started smoking again -- elections were the excuse) ... I am automatically upgraded to first class and there is a separate line to re-enter if you hold a first class ticket ... the passenger line for coach was much longer ... but, on the coach line there was a large and I do mean large blonde (and I mean bleached blonde) woman with high hair, and ample bosom, and a loud voice ... It was my turn ... as I started to step up to the security scan ... she butted in my place ... I was tired and said, "excuse me --- bitch" The TSA employees laughed it off ... because she was so aggressive and frankly way too boisterous with a voice that could have woken the dead ... she had a big Hillary button on her amply endowed chest ... she went over to the TSA employee who was a black woman and said "honey, you will be wanting one of these now." The woman accepted it ... after she pushed her way through security the TSA employee then spit on the button and stepped on it loudly to crush it in half." It made me feel a bit better ...
My office has a Star Fuc*er poster a relic I guess from the 90's that I bought while living in California ...
I just never bothered to get rid of it I guess I wanted to keep it for one of my children as a historic artifact ... I thought about the poster and about the Clinton's and then realized that despite the fact that I defended him, and voted for him twice these two are like the Beverly Hillbillies with rabies they just go after say whatever and twist and lie and spin and are literally the most reprehensible beings on I have ever seen ...
There have always been nefarious things going on whenever the Clintons come to town ... nobody is really sure of whitewater Starr felt he would not prosecute because he was unsure of the reliability of the 2 witnesses. Although the President did lie under oath ... and that is perjury ... even though he lied about Monica Lewinsky (one in a long strand of women, and young women) ... it is like you cannot have Clinton without scandal ... so fine their campaign brought it up and Obama was not going to do so because unlike Senator Clinton he was trying to remain above the fray ... and he does have loyalty to the Democratic party ... so fine ... I hope, now that Clinton's campaign has mentioned this and also mentioned that John McCain is a better whatever than Senator Obama who is supposedly in their own party that Obama feels free to bring up the litany of scandals and then also add to the pie their recent business dealings etc ...
My stomach turns when I think of the Clinton's ... Keith Olbermann's analysis of the whole thing last evening was excellent ... this must stop now .. I agree with the poster who said that she reminded her of Eva Peron I have said that before too ... she appeals to those without resources in a hegemonic manner so that they will vote against their class interests, the Clintons have single handedly destroyed the Democratic party, and I maintain she is not a feminist --- just part of a twisted couple of megolomaniacs who believe that the presidency is their personal domain ... and would lie cheat and steal and burn the democratic landscape to get what they want ...

The Clintons managed to divide the country and now they are dividing the Party. We must put pressure on principled Democrats to walk away and give us something new. Any party that contains the Clintons is too tainted for people who care about the country.

I just read something by Jonathan Chait, and he says that Hillary's only option, since she can't fix the math, is to go after Obama's viability. Right. She has to destroy him. And she will, if something doesn't happen soon. Given all the shady things she's done in he last two weeks---the muslim thing, the belittle him thing ("His experience consists of one speech he gave---"), and now the Starr thing, it's easy to see that she is is what Powers said she is. A monster. Indeed, that's what Powers was in part alluding to: all these shady tactics. How anyone who has supported Hillary can remain a supporter of Hillary, after all this, is beyond me. And the poster who said--- it was either this thread or another one---that she gave him the kiss of Judas in that debate where she said how honored she was to be there with him, hit it dead on. If I ever had any doubts about how harsh I have been in my criticism of Hillary, they are gone.

FUTURE GRANDDAUGHTER
(sitting in passenger seat of electric car, looking at old pictures on the Holographic News Archive)
"Who's that?"

ME (slowing to an almost silent 100 mph, and putting the car on autopilot to look)
"Oh... she was... um... she was the first woman who ran for president way back in 2008."

GRANDDAUGHTER
"Wow... no women ran for president back then?"

ME
"Nope."

GRANDDAUGHTER
"Who was she?"

ME
"Well, I have to admit, it's kind of vague now... I barely remember. I think her name was Heather or something. Wait... hold on, it was Hillaroo, or Hillary or something. Yeah, that's it. Hillary. She was really admired for awhile. For quite awhile she was an inspiration."

GRANDDAUGHTER
"Well, then, why didn't she become president?"

ME
(Pause... then big sigh. Eyes back on the road, flipping off the autopilot)
"It's too depressing. She kind of... well... she started acting exactly like the people she'd spent her whole life fighting, the people she'd always hated... people who have no moral compass and who will do or say anything to get elected.... and who are incredibly transparent while doing it."

GRANDDAUGHTER
"Yuck."

ME
"Yup."

GRANDDAUGHTER
(looking back dolefully at the pictures)
"That's sad. And she was the first."

ME
Yup.... (but then smiling) ...but cheer up. Look at it this way. She was the one who the country see the true value of her opponent."

GRANDDAUGHTER
"Really?"

ME
"Yeah. I mean, in a funny way she ended up doing a tremendously heroic and noble deed for America, inadvertently; even though it was a tad messy and unconscious " by merely revealing who she truly was. You see, without her, we would never have had a President Obama."

GRANDDAUGHTER
"Reeeeaaaallly? That is so cool!"

He doesnt have the popular support and cant get enough electoral votes. With no experience in the Senate to speak of he's looking like the weakest of the two candidates.

All his nasty supporters and groupies cant change this fact and the louder they yell TAXES or Bitcch or Whatever they look like Repugs even more.

Hope springs eternal in those who haven't been paying attention. You better tell Hillary to recheck her math. But, fear not, she's doing her dirtiest to try to manipulate, spin and flat out steal the nomination. If things go "as usual" in politics, she's likely get away with it. Of course, the Clintons have a long history of getting away with things, as we all well know.

AN UNRECOGNIZED SCANDAL IN THE MAKING

People are failing to recognize that Hillary gets millions of dollars of contributions from the health care industry. Then she supports mandatory purchasing of health insurance. Her plan will make the health care industry that is already one of the highest growth industries windfall profits by using government subsides to fund the difference between what people pay and what they insurance companies get. Meanwhile Obama's plan will make health care more affordable with government subsidies but just mandatory for children. Obama's plan is the only plan that will minimize costs because the health care insures need to stay competitive to attract the un-insured. It Economics 101, Hillary's plan artificially increases demand by being mandatory that will increase costs.

I recognize this. She's Ms. Corporate America. Meanwhile, Obama fires one of his campaign workers for telling the truth (actually, no, I like some monsters; Cookie is quite loveable, though he has been known to lie on occasion) and Clinton's liars stay in place. I never thought much of Bill Clinton's presidency; no vision at all and nothing much accomplished except a balanced budget which he was pressured to do by the gops; but now, reassessing, I am beginning to do some research and realize that it was positively damaging to the country, a continuation of Raygun's policies of deregulation and corporate toesucking. At least, in the long run, Senator Clinton's run should destroy the Clintons' legacy even if she gets the nomination. History won't treat this couple kindly.
