Obama Raises $55 Million in February

WASHINGTON — Democratic Sen. Barack Obama raised a record $55 million in February for his presidential campaign, eclipsing rival Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's own substantial fundraising for the month. All told, Obama has raised $193 million during his yearlong bid for the White House.

The campaign's announcement Thursday came two days after Obama lost three of four primaries to Clinton. Her victories stopped his winning streak and extended the race into an unpredictable future.

Obama's February total was his second fundraising record. He raised $36 million in January, more than any other presidential candidate who has ever been in a contested primary. His combined January and February totals nearly matched what he raised last year.

"That's a humbling achievement, and I am very grateful for your support," Obama said in another fundraising appeal. "No campaign has ever raised this much in a single month in the history of presidential primaries. But more important than the total is how we did it _ more than 90 percent of donations were $100 or less ..."

Until now, the high water mark for overall primary fundraising through February of an election year was set by President Bush in 2004, when he was unopposed. Bush had raised $155 million for the comparable period. Subtracting the money Obama has raised for the general election, Obama has raised more than $186 million.

Clinton raised an impressive $35 million in February, a significant recovery from January when Obama raised more than twice her total. But Obama has outpaced her both in fundraising and spending during the nominating contests.

More than $54 million of Obama's February money was for the primary election. The campaign said it raised $45 million through the Internet during the month and had 385,000 new contributors for a total of more than 1 million donors.

Details of their fundraising and spending for February won't be available until March 20, when the campaigns are required to file financial reports with the Federal Election Commission.

Riding her victory wave, Clinton's camp announced Thursday that she raised $4 million online since Tuesday's presidential primary successes in Ohio, Texas and Rhode Island.

The Clinton campaign said it had raised the money from the time polls closed Tuesday through noon Thursday. It reported 30,000 new donors. The influx of money made their online total raised for this month $6 million, the campaign announced.

With the outcome of their race uncertain, both campaigns are eagerly raising money for upcoming contests. The biggest one ahead is the April 22 primary in Pennsylvania, a state with two major media markets and a series of smaller ones that can consume advertising dollars. Obama has been airing television ads in Wyoming, which holds a caucus Saturday, and Mississippi, which holds a primary Tuesday. Both Obama and Clinton have radio ads in Wyoming and Obama has ads on radio in Mississippi as well.

Political advertising analyst Evan Tracey said a typical political ad buy in Pennsylvania would cost about half a million dollars a week. But with the high stakes in the state and the benefit of time, Tracey predicted both candidates would spend in excess of the more than $20 million the candidates spent advertising in Ohio and Texas combined.

Clinton advisers said they are optimistic about her chances in Pennsylvania and will move 200-300 staffers from Ohio and Texas to Pennsylvania, where they plan to open at least 23 offices across the state.

"We're going to have the funds we need to keep this campaign going, to keep Hillary Clinton's message out there," senior adviser Ann Lewis said in a teleconference with reporters.

Past victories have also caused upticks in giving. The Clinton campaign, for instance, raised more than $1 million in the 24 hours following her New Hampshire victory on Jan. 8. Obama raised $1.2 million the day after winning the Iowa caucuses and he raised even more in the 24 hours after losing in New Hampshire.

Clinton had to lend her campaign $5 million at the end of January, but has seen her finances improve since then. She reported raising $34 million for the primary in February.

Obama and his allies outspent her in Texas and Ohio in advertising.

Both campaigns have been the top fundraisers of the entire presidential field, raising $100 million each in 2007.

this was in the news today. Is nothing sacred to these republicans! People died for our right to vote and they're using it as a political tool...

An InsiderAdvantage survey of 412 registered voters who said they were likely to vote in the March 11 Mississippi Democratic primary shows, as expected, that Barack Obama leads. However, the poll also suggests that somewhere between 15% and 20% of the voter turnout for the open-primary contest will be Republicans and independents.

“There is some good news for Clinton in this survey. First, she is winning independent voters. Second, we have heard rumors that Republicans voters might engage in the primary in higher than normal numbers, so that they can vote for Clinton, and thus keep the Democratic battle going. There is some evidence that this trend might be developing.

I think it might have been helpful if the Obama campaign had released its February fundraising total over the weekend. $55 million is a staggering show of support (and is significantly higher than Hillary's) and would have been tangible evidence of his advantage in this critical part of the race. People like to back a winner...and this story might have defused some of Hillary's dominance of the news cycles in the critical days leading up to the Texas and Ohio primaries.

No it would not have been helpful since the fawning-over-'Fluffy' media was already touting his "financial advantages". As a matter of fact, Barack Hussein did spend 4:1 in the March 4th States and still lost!!!

It is not about the monies anymore. He has been exposed for what he is: an empty suit, all talk, all fluff, no experience and no substance. Plus after the March 4th losses, he is not even a General Election candidate

SA--back to logic 101....he has been exposed as a candidate who can inspire over one million people to give their hard earned bucks to the candidate they see as the future leader of this country. Hillary has resorted to girlie girl tactics to try hold on to her base-Feminists are finally seeing what so many have learned about the Clintons they hold to a belief or a personal value only for as long as it benefits them. Hillary the big girl who was able to hold her own among her male colleagues went down the drain as soon as the candidates were able to overcome her frontrunner status then ...the girl...what will we do with her whining? Can you see her with Putin over a negotiating table? Will she cry or call him names?

Its amazing that in the United States people are raising Millions of Dollars to buy there way into some Office within the Government, Borrow Billions of Dollars for War, Waste and not care about where these Billions of dollars go, and the people in the government could care less about the Citizens of the United States.
Its amazing that the people in the Congress are "OWNED" by Corporations which are bent on making themselves richer and richer, at the expense of the Citizens of the United States.
It is just amazing the level of Corruption within the Congress of the United States, the level of Corruption within the Republican Party, and the Corruption within a few of the Democratic members.
Only in the United States of America can we have such a Hidious Government.

$55 million that Obama wasted. He outspent Hillary 3:1 only to lose Ohio and Texas and Rhode island.

Isn't it time for his supporters to rethink how their money can be used to beat McCain.

Time to switch to Hillary...we need to win in November.

Although the financial reality of ads and polls is inescapable for anyone running for POTUS, and although Obama's bottom-up model is interesting, one has to admit that all the spending (and earning from advertisers) is a bit lame. Those who consider themselves 'informed' by such ads, let alone base their votes on them, make me nervous.
I propose a simpler model.
Any person who gets the required signatures writes a book (treatise, portfolio, novella, popup, etc.) presenting his or her argument to be president. The books are made free and available in print and online. Next, they draw straws to see in which order they each deliver a televised one-hour speech.
After each gets his or her turn, a weeklong moment of silence is observed.
Last, in order to give each of them an opportunity for rebuttal, evasion, etc., they are all broadcast in split screen for 10 minutes, with simultaneous audio.
Then the people are given a week to vote, though in person, at any local fast food joint, convenience store, or gas station. Downside is you have to get a tattoo of your chosen candidate's initials to preclude repeat voters.
Highest percentage wins. (If preset minimum is not reached, process is repeated).

I don't give a rat's backside how much money Obama's camp has raised, if they're not going to use it to aggressively fight back.

It's time to fight fire with fire.

How much does this make for Barak Obama? about 200 million..... He could feed Kenya for a whole year, very well I might add, with that kind of dough. Mile Huckabee got 1/4 of the pledge votes and he raised only a few million. This is an isight int how democrats will wastefully spend taxpayers money. Money doesn't buy votes. How many times does America have to see this kind of wasteful spending.

ok, sure. Like air time is free.

How about single-payer national healthcare? Let's get a president in the white house who WOULDN'T veto Conyers' bill. That would make every campaign dollar worth it.

One has to wonder how Clinton raised 4 Millions. According to a recent LA Times investigation, Clinton received $500-$2,500 contributions from Nonexistent and poor immigrants.

The Clintons fraudulent behavior has become a second nature. Even though Norman Hsu has been indicted, the Clintons' chinese connection is alive and well.

After 7 dismal years of enduring the childish antics of a smirking baboon who could barely speak coherently in public......a man with absolutely no foreign policy experience but a seriously worrisome track record of job loss due to failure....... a 50-something jerk with a frat-boy attitude to kick butt and clear brush rather than the maturity to trust us and to test the depth of our fierce American perseverance......who hid like a child or giggled like a moron when faced with serious issues ----- we need someone with a positive attitude and faith that hope will lift us to a higher place than we have been. We are a better America than his life-long CIA operative, Saudi-kissing father and miserable, mindless bitch of a mother taught him we are and we need someone who actually understands that.

That person is not Hillary Clinton who, I'm afraid, will only see us as a bottomless pit for more war cash.

NO - that person is Barack Obama.

This just in...

Police have identified the Times Square Bomber. It was Senator John McCain using a Karl Rove inspired tactic to scare the public into voting Republican. He was identified by the partially used Vietnamese rickshaw he drove up in and later abandoned in front of Hogs and Heffers.

You're on a 'high' Lisa. Step back from it all, if at all possible.

This is yet another feeding frenzy that is going to turn out bad. NOT that BO is bad, just that your expectations are waaaayyy out of whack with reality, with what he can do (not much)

Are you open to the possibility that this is yet ANOTHER example of feeding frenzy? If I listed some recent feeding frenzies and their outcomes, would you be open to the fact that you might, once again, be caught up in a sardine ball that is headed for massive destruction?

Hell BO may turn out to be great ........ for him. For you? Forget it (just playing the odds) and IF that were to happen, THEN jump on his bandwagon. It's ok to wait and be patient. IF it happens THEN send him all your money (if you must) and sell your soul to him/them/whoever. But to do it now, makes NO SENSE. None.

Make him prove it.

It's funny all my republican friends see Barack Obama as the ONLY candidate who has the strong support of the people and who can unite the country to reverse the negatives in our country...from the war, to the economy, to tackling all the issues that come before him. His judgment is strong - and growing up the way he did, he's not going to forget those who got him elected.

We are proud to be contributors to Senator Obama's campaign. We have never contributed money to a political campaign before.
I made phone calls for George McGovern, that was the last time I participated in any way, except to vote, in a presidential campaign.
We thought for a long time about making contributions, we studied Senator Obama's life & political record, we read his books & we talked to friends who are political professionals.
We concluded that this was the right time & the right man to lead our country. We also felt that our small contributions could make a small difference.
We will continue to support Senator Obama & we look forward to his presidency.
