WASHINGTON — Democratic Sen. Barack Obama raised a record $55 million in February for his presidential campaign, eclipsing rival Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's own substantial fundraising for the month. All told, Obama has raised $193 million during his yearlong bid for the White House.

The campaign's announcement Thursday came two days after Obama lost three of four primaries to Clinton. Her victories stopped his winning streak and extended the race into an unpredictable future.

Obama's February total was his second fundraising record. He raised $36 million in January, more than any other presidential candidate who has ever been in a contested primary. His combined January and February totals nearly matched what he raised last year.

"That's a humbling achievement, and I am very grateful for your support," Obama said in another fundraising appeal. "No campaign has ever raised this much in a single month in the history of presidential primaries. But more important than the total is how we did it _ more than 90 percent of donations were $100 or less ..."

Until now, the high water mark for overall primary fundraising through February of an election year was set by President Bush in 2004, when he was unopposed. Bush had raised $155 million for the comparable period. Subtracting the money Obama has raised for the general election, Obama has raised more than $186 million.

Clinton raised an impressive $35 million in February, a significant recovery from January when Obama raised more than twice her total. But Obama has outpaced her both in fundraising and spending during the nominating contests.

More than $54 million of Obama's February money was for the primary election. The campaign said it raised $45 million through the Internet during the month and had 385,000 new contributors for a total of more than 1 million donors.

Details of their fundraising and spending for February won't be available until March 20, when the campaigns are required to file financial reports with the Federal Election Commission.

Story continues below

Riding her victory wave, Clinton's camp announced Thursday that she raised $4 million online since Tuesday's presidential primary successes in Ohio, Texas and Rhode Island.

The Clinton campaign said it had raised the money from the time polls closed Tuesday through noon Thursday. It reported 30,000 new donors. The influx of money made their online total raised for this month $6 million, the campaign announced.

With the outcome of their race uncertain, both campaigns are eagerly raising money for upcoming contests. The biggest one ahead is the April 22 primary in Pennsylvania, a state with two major media markets and a series of smaller ones that can consume advertising dollars. Obama has been airing television ads in Wyoming, which holds a caucus Saturday, and Mississippi, which holds a primary Tuesday. Both Obama and Clinton have radio ads in Wyoming and Obama has ads on radio in Mississippi as well.

Political advertising analyst Evan Tracey said a typical political ad buy in Pennsylvania would cost about half a million dollars a week. But with the high stakes in the state and the benefit of time, Tracey predicted both candidates would spend in excess of the more than $20 million the candidates spent advertising in Ohio and Texas combined.

Clinton advisers said they are optimistic about her chances in Pennsylvania and will move 200-300 staffers from Ohio and Texas to Pennsylvania, where they plan to open at least 23 offices across the state.

"We're going to have the funds we need to keep this campaign going, to keep Hillary Clinton's message out there," senior adviser Ann Lewis said in a teleconference with reporters.

Past victories have also caused upticks in giving. The Clinton campaign, for instance, raised more than $1 million in the 24 hours following her New Hampshire victory on Jan. 8. Obama raised $1.2 million the day after winning the Iowa caucuses and he raised even more in the 24 hours after losing in New Hampshire.

Clinton had to lend her campaign $5 million at the end of January, but has seen her finances improve since then. She reported raising $34 million for the primary in February.

Obama and his allies outspent her in Texas and Ohio in advertising.

Both campaigns have been the top fundraisers of the entire presidential field, raising $100 million each in 2007.

"Is it just me, or..." is the situation so utterly RIDICULOUS (here in the 21st Century) that it would be a RIOT if it were not so dammed serious?

Let's cut to the chase here: what every single one of these "media outlets" really care about is, "$55 Million." They care about it because, let's be quite frank here, THEY are going to be the ones who actually get it. The number-one expense of any political campaign is "commercials, and polls." What we are looking at ... what we are looking at THE PRODUCT OF ... is a once-every-two-years feeding frenzy.

And not much more.

Every single one of the candidates in the present "so-called election" just happens to be a presently-sitting United States Senator. Which means that you can visit the Library of Congress web-site at http://thomas.loc.gov and see EVERY SINGLE THING that any one of those people ACTUALLY did during the entire(!) George W. Bush "tenure."

These people are so-busy spending hundreds of millions of dollars trying to persuade you about "what they are," did a single one of them (or their media-hore backers) EVER actually stop and consider that, "here in the 21st Century, we can LOOK IT UP?" Duh.

No matter how many millions of dollars any one of these clowns may actually spend (on the media) trying to supposedly-persuade-us how "things are going to be different someday," the tireless and under-paid clerks at the Library of Congress patiently and tirelessly reveal (and catalog...) to us the bitter truth.

They're lying.

They all are.

They want to get elected and then go right back to doing the very same things that they have done in their capacity as United States Senators.

If they were at-all serious about changing what "The President of the United States of America is doing, or is allowed to do, or should have done," why, they would have already done so and it would now be a simple matter of public record.

What IS "a simple matter of public record is" ...

... they're just actors on a stage,

... doing what their handlers tell them to do,

... and they're lying.

Period.

Sorry.

I can't help but notice that the TV media rarely if ever has discussed the financial benefits they receive from all those campaign contributions. They act like they're independent of that. It should be a conflict of interest thing. In fact, each station or channel should indicate daily, as they do poll results, how much they make in political contributions. You know, run it in the scroll at the bottom of the screen as they do all the Brittany stuff.

The offhand comments apparently sought to downplay the potential impact on
Canada of Clinton and Obama's attacks on the North American Free Trade
Agreement (NAFTA) during stops in the US state of Ohio.

Canadians deny Obama call

A spokesman for the Canadian Embassy to the United States, Tristan Landry,
flatly denied the CTV report that a senior Obama aide had told the Canadian
ambassador not to take seriously Obama's denunciations of NAFTA.

"None of the presidential campaigns have called either the ambassador or any
of the officials here to raise NAFTA," Landry said.

He said there had been no conversations at all on the subject.

"We didn't make any calls, they didn't call us," Landry said.

"There is no story as far as we’re concerned," he said.

Sure they denied it was an Obama issue - Hillary Clinton's people are the culprits here! How can a senator have such a big head as to think that she can do or say anything she wants, even blame her opponent, and be able to walk with her head up high? She's NOT capable of being Commander in Chief - she'll have all the heads of other nations mad at us!

So how many doughnuts did he buy with all that money? Come on let's hear it. I want to know how he blew all that cash and still lost the MOST important states in the general like Texas and Ohio. Well? Are we going to get a complete report of the incompetence of the Obama campaign or not.? Not.

Texas will vote Republican. Why are you calling it MOST important?

State delegates are already apportioned according to size. It's delegates that matter.

If you read the article above, you will see that all spending info will be out on March 20th. Why are you raising the issue, then?

And you call the Obama campaign incompetent? So is this some new false talking point?

It is sad to see this level of discourse.

I agree. It really doesn't bother me what is said about either candidate and their campaign staff. However, the disparaging of either side's supporters is really below the belt and counter-productive. This is childish and Right Wingnut gasbag territory; for the general good of the party, it would be well advised for both sides to cool their rhetoric and name calling regarding their opponent's supporters.

Oh my god. You're not stupid, but I question this move. Understand my comments about the masses? Since day one, the 'masses' worship heroes and will turn over damn near everything to those heroes w/o question. But hell, that was back in the dark ages when people didn't know any better. Right? We have progressed, have we not?

BO does NOT need your damn money. You keep it. go buy some vegies or something good for YOU. If you're having to scrape $50 together, the last person who needs it is BO, for god's sake. He's going to take everything you have, once elected. Do you not understand this?

Gratuitous comments on my part no doubt and I expect to be hammered. But only stating them so that MAYBE you wake up. Such is life. Jeezuz f'n christ, I worry for us .......... We are such gullible folk

here's my take on hillary staying in the race. she milks her donors, builds up her campaign warchest, and just before dropping out, pays penn and the rest of her big shots huge fees. hasn't penn already received $10mil? all the big shots running her campaign receive huge payouts, and than the 'donations' to the clinton library from her big shots start pouring in. next think you know the money is bill and hillary's sound far fetched??? think again.

Some flashy speech that says a lot of nothing is enough for a partisan crowd, but it won't be enough to win a general election. It's gonna take guts, not toally caving in like Obama will do.

If you don't want to see a President McCain, Clinton had better get the nom.

Polls show Obama beating mccain.

You should check things out before trying to make your wishes into facts.

The polls? This is the ultimate false arguement that the Obama side always uses. Let's see how Obama's polls look after a couple months of the special sort of vile scrutiny that the Republican do so well. Clinton's taken her lumps for 15 years, Obama hasn't experienced any Republican slime. Yet! But it's coming and the Repubs will quickly turn Obama into their version of dogmeat. He will be lucky to get 45% of the vote in the general. All the dreamers and all the false hope in the world won't prevent a Democratic Party debacle with Obama as the nominee.

And I'm not saying any of this as a Hillary lover. I detest Hillary for all the same reasons you do. But I'm supporting her because this country desperately needs a Democrat in the White House and at least she has a chance of winning. Sen. Audacity of Ego has none. Wake up people before it's too late.

MoeSart,

Your political logic is faulty. The one who gets the most delegates and raises the most money wins. You must be part salmon because your swimming awfully hard against the current here.

McCain can't win in November. Have you been watching the economy? the war? The sub-prime scandal? Gas and Electric prices? The deficit? Average income for Americans? The Dollar?

Do you know which candidate has the highest negatives of any in history?

Moe Republicans are voting Democrat this year. You must have some sense of the disaster these last 8 years have been for America.

And your thinking Hillary is the one to lead us? The go along get along preener and posturer?

She practically fell all over herself voting Republican over and over these 8 years.

Until Obama told her there were a few problems to tackle she was busily crowing about how we should treasure our experience since she' s been a Senator. How much more clueless and worthless could she have been? America just plain dislikes Hillary. I'm repulsed by the way she Leibermans every issue. She couldn't get in line fast enough to rubber stamp attacking and overthrowing the government of a defensless third world country so she could pretend she was Johnette Wayne.

There isn't a bigger phony in America. I remember when she and Leiberman teamed up together to outlaw rap lyrics. What substance. What a racist.

Obama doesn't whine or get emotional when his opponent, Clinton constantly lies about his record. He has more guts because he stands on his record of good judgment, real reform, and his ability to build a potent grassroots movement. He has constantly kept his cool in the face of misinformation. That takes more strength -- more guts to refuse to sink to the level of Mark Penn and Hillary.

This supposedly vetted candidate gets all flustered when she is asked to provide her and Bill's tax returns. They start calling Obama "Ken Starr". It seems she isn't completely vetted, because she refuses to release records that Obama has supplied and had no problem supplying.

All the charges lobbed at Obama have been disproved and deflated so far. This Tuesdays bump was based on Clintonian lies. She appeals to fear, while Obama appeals to hope in the American people's ability to create real change and reject the whole appeal to fear. Even Bill Clinton said in 2004 if you have a choice between someone who appeals to fear and someone who appeals to hope, you should vote for the person who makes you hope and think. That is Obama's campaign.

Republicans WANT Clinton to run, because it will mobilize their base who really are not happy with Mccain. They know how to run against Hillary and defeat anything she proposes. They can't wait to use the Hillarycare mandates attack. They really don't know how to deal with Obama and his ability to bring out voters -- young and first time voters.

The national polling also disagrees with your contention.
