WASHINGTON — Democratic Sen. Barack Obama raised a record $55 million in February for his presidential campaign, eclipsing rival Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's own substantial fundraising for the month. All told, Obama has raised $193 million during his yearlong bid for the White House.

The campaign's announcement Thursday came two days after Obama lost three of four primaries to Clinton. Her victories stopped his winning streak and extended the race into an unpredictable future.

Obama's February total was his second fundraising record. He raised $36 million in January, more than any other presidential candidate who has ever been in a contested primary. His combined January and February totals nearly matched what he raised last year.

"That's a humbling achievement, and I am very grateful for your support," Obama said in another fundraising appeal. "No campaign has ever raised this much in a single month in the history of presidential primaries. But more important than the total is how we did it _ more than 90 percent of donations were $100 or less ..."

Until now, the high water mark for overall primary fundraising through February of an election year was set by President Bush in 2004, when he was unopposed. Bush had raised $155 million for the comparable period. Subtracting the money Obama has raised for the general election, Obama has raised more than $186 million.

Clinton raised an impressive $35 million in February, a significant recovery from January when Obama raised more than twice her total. But Obama has outpaced her both in fundraising and spending during the nominating contests.

More than $54 million of Obama's February money was for the primary election. The campaign said it raised $45 million through the Internet during the month and had 385,000 new contributors for a total of more than 1 million donors.

Details of their fundraising and spending for February won't be available until March 20, when the campaigns are required to file financial reports with the Federal Election Commission.

Story continues below

Riding her victory wave, Clinton's camp announced Thursday that she raised $4 million online since Tuesday's presidential primary successes in Ohio, Texas and Rhode Island.

The Clinton campaign said it had raised the money from the time polls closed Tuesday through noon Thursday. It reported 30,000 new donors. The influx of money made their online total raised for this month $6 million, the campaign announced.

With the outcome of their race uncertain, both campaigns are eagerly raising money for upcoming contests. The biggest one ahead is the April 22 primary in Pennsylvania, a state with two major media markets and a series of smaller ones that can consume advertising dollars. Obama has been airing television ads in Wyoming, which holds a caucus Saturday, and Mississippi, which holds a primary Tuesday. Both Obama and Clinton have radio ads in Wyoming and Obama has ads on radio in Mississippi as well.

Political advertising analyst Evan Tracey said a typical political ad buy in Pennsylvania would cost about half a million dollars a week. But with the high stakes in the state and the benefit of time, Tracey predicted both candidates would spend in excess of the more than $20 million the candidates spent advertising in Ohio and Texas combined.

Clinton advisers said they are optimistic about her chances in Pennsylvania and will move 200-300 staffers from Ohio and Texas to Pennsylvania, where they plan to open at least 23 offices across the state.

"We're going to have the funds we need to keep this campaign going, to keep Hillary Clinton's message out there," senior adviser Ann Lewis said in a teleconference with reporters.

Past victories have also caused upticks in giving. The Clinton campaign, for instance, raised more than $1 million in the 24 hours following her New Hampshire victory on Jan. 8. Obama raised $1.2 million the day after winning the Iowa caucuses and he raised even more in the 24 hours after losing in New Hampshire.

Clinton had to lend her campaign $5 million at the end of January, but has seen her finances improve since then. She reported raising $34 million for the primary in February.

Obama and his allies outspent her in Texas and Ohio in advertising.

Both campaigns have been the top fundraisers of the entire presidential field, raising $100 million each in 2007.

Question for the Obamma camp. Is that money from the voters or corporate? Seeing as the public is strapped for cash, is losing house and home, jobs, healthcare, it tells me, it has to be corporate. The problem with taking money from special intrest groups? You are pressured to fill thier agenda, not the agenda that is in the best intrest of the public. You become thier slave. Obamma is a smart man, and you would think that he wouldn't want to be owned by anyone. Presidents are suppose to be neutral. If you are coporate owned, you no longer have the ability to be neutral, or work in the best intrest of the public or thier needs. I would send the money back pal. The cost is too high to keep it. The public would have more respect for a guy who has less, is his or her own man, builds support based on specifics as to how he plans to fix the many issues that plague us. You don't need to blow millions on ads, that is crap. I worked in tv, and in advertising as a producer. Large companies do national and international ads on less, far less. Its not about how much money you have, its how you spend it on the people you claim you will represent, after. That sets the bar higher, separates the men from the boys. Are you a man or a boy?

Here's an email I received today from Senator Obama:

I want to add some more news to David's note about the state of the race.

As you know, we've won 27 of 41 contests and have maintained our commanding lead among pledged delegates.

But today I want to share another staggering number: supporters like you donated more than $55 million to this campaign in the month of February.

That's a humbling achievement, and I am very grateful for your support.

No campaign has ever raised this much in a single month in the history of presidential primaries. But more important than the total is how we did it -- more than 90% of donations were $100 or less, and more than 385,000 new donors in February pushed us past our goal of more than 1,000,000 people owning a piece of this campaign.
(snip)

Thank you for your support,

Barack

If you just wanted to make a general statement about special interest and lobbyist money, then you've got a good point.

Or if you wanted to limit your argument to Hillary and McCain (since they take money from special interest, too) then there's something to what you're saying.

But cruisepuppy7452a --- yours is what is known as a "straw man" argument. You set up a false assumption, don't take the time to prove it, then attack it as if it were real...

Barack Obama LOOKS and SOUNDS presidential.

Like a true statesman, something the U.S. has been sorely lacking for many years.

Hillary Clinton does not at all.

What America needs is a breath of fresh air.

Barack Obama is it.

Hillary is a hack politician.
Her campaign is the democratic version of Karl Rove so why should the dems put up with that nonsense.
Anyway, I contributed twice to the Obama cause just this week alone. I'll give more money if I have to just to make sure he locks up this nomination.

Go Obama!
P.S. Pick Al Gore as your running mate. An annoucement like that will shock the world.

He won't need a Secretary of State. He can conduct the diplomacy directly--like FDR used to do.

I send him $50 almost every time Hillary says something that insults Obama supporters. Like, "Yes We WILL " or "John McCain has experience...I have experience....and Sen Obama has a speech in 2002."
Keep the insults coming Hillary. It reminds me that you believe if you can't be President that you would rather have McCain be President so you can run again in 4 years. I disdain your way of campaigning, Mrs. Clinton!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:37 PM on 03/06/2008

That's funny that's the same thing I do, Hillary attacks I donate. Glad someone is seeing through her manipulative move here, busting up McCain tearing down Obama so she can run in 4 years instead of 8. Win at all cost is her motto that's for sure.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:42 PM on 03/06/2008

That's nice. With 55 million dollars in February alone, and 100 million + in campaign donations you'd think he wouldn't need your $50 per insult donation. In fact, all the money in the world won't buy him the presidency if what he has raised hasn't already. Might as well take yourself out for dinner each time Hilary insults Obama. That's what he's doing with your money anyhow!

I donated $100 last month and so far, gave another $100 this month. Obama is the best thing to happen to our election process in a long time. He is honest and I want to see him become our next president. For those of you who haven't heard, the Canadian Prime Minister's office apologized for mis-representing Obama's campaign's contact with the Canadian Embassy. OBAMA WAS NOT LYING. The Canadian Parliament today was fighting about the Prime Minister's interference in American affairs. Follow the links:

BTW, I hope he doesn't agree to help pay for a do over in Michigan and Florida. Those two states broke the rules and should pay for it themselves. I don't want my donations going to pay for this do over.

O-BA-MA!

You guess right!
Obama is at a disadvantage compared to Hillary when it comes to the big states because of her name recognition and because she focused on getting the Clinton Machine going in those states. However, he has managed to compete effectively in those states esstentially holding her to a draw in most cases so it's great strategy and he destorys her in the small caucus states. So, the bottom line is that he is the nominee and it depends on how Hillary behaves herself over the next few weeks will determine if she is the VP.

For all those Hillary supporters who wave the phony "big state" argument for why only Hillary can win the GE, a just-released AP poll shows Dems far outnumbering Repubs throughout America:

"The poll showed 52 percent call themselves Democrats, up from 45 percent in an AP-Ipsos survey in mid-December. Thirty-five percent say they are Republicans, about the same as December's 37 percent."

So much for Hillary's only reason for overturning a popular vote and delegates victory for Obama.

A survey showing that while both HRC and Obama currelty poll as beating McCain in the general, they do it with very different states - and Obama comes out with more delegates and less vulnerability to upset, precisely because he relies more on smaller states.

President Hillary Clinton

Keep saying it to yourself. Yes, I woke up in a cold sweat at 4 am Wednesday morning. Hitch explains:

There’s something horrible and undefeatable about people who have no life except the worship of power, people who don’t want the meeting to end, the people who just are unstoppable, who only have one focus, no humanity, no character, nothing but the worship of money and power. They win in the end.
I'm not as defeatist. The next generation can still stop them. Yes we can!

Just wondering about this. With all the gazillions of dollars Obama has raised I have two questions.

2. Why is John McCain so close in the polls to Obama, despite being outpsent 20-1?

Nice role reversal. Hillary WAS the huge favorite just last November wasn't she?

I wonder why she couldn't put him away? If he's so weak and all. I could have sworn Barack was a huge underdog.

Maybe I'm just weak on revisionary history.

I see AnninCA and Superbus have it down to an art.

A month or two ago they were happily quoting the "national" polls and dismissing Obama as an also ran with no chance on earth.

Here's some questions for YOU to ponder:

1. With all of the well-oiled machinary and big fundraisers, why can't Hillary outraise Obama?

2. Despite her name recognition and being very well known to the public at large(98% of people say that they have enough info about her to make a judgement about her), why didn't she wrap up the nomination after Super Tuesday like she said she would?

3. Despite much better name recognition, why is Obama outpolling John McCain?

4. Why does Hillary always seem to start off with a 20pt lead in the polls and then drop like a rock the more time she spends campaigning somewhere?

That's very interesting. I find it interesting that people see a difference between Obama and Hillary even though they each admit that their policy platforms are nearly identical. They have done this is almost every recent speech, if you haven't noticed. Then they proceed to make their cases based on their personalities and backgrounds... So no matter what else is part of the equation we know for certain that OBAMA = CLINTON. Though some people think that a piece of legislation will somehow have a different effect on the world depending on the charisma or experience of the person who championed it... Right.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, the politics are no different than any other large city. Pretty sleazy.

Now, outside of Philadelphia it gets interesting. Bucks County has been run by Republicans for years, but Mike Fitzpatrick was tossed for Patrick Murphy (anti war ) in 06. That surprised me big time. People have reached their breaking point. There are plenty of well educated and informed folks in all the surrounding 'burbs actually. Don't buy all the race stuff. That's only in well known pockets.

To be perfectly honest, as a native Pennsylvanian, what does tend to get on our nerves is this constant "similar to Ohio" drivel coming from the talking heads. In fact, for years I've considered Carville's description of Pennsylvania to be an absolute joke. Trust me on this one, Barack Obama is on my side of the Mason-Dixon line. I can see him selling in Central Pennsylvania too. Easily. The Commonwealth has changed so much over the Years. Many people aren't seeing this.

Pennsylvanian's don't like to be compared. We've already seen other examples of the political "experts" call a State in advance, only to get egged. People should show more respect.

Finally, another good clue is of course the legendary John Kerry "swiss cheese on a Philly cheesesteak. Tell Barack to take his jacket off, roll up his sleeves and get the original. Kerry looked like a fool and an elitist snob. Very non-Philly and non-PA. He's lucky he didn't have Hillary hounding him then for votes.

Or...It can be said, like Jim Morrison:

'They got the guns but we got the numbers."

Viva.

Who cares how much money he raised? He still hasn't been able to win any of the big states and get to the delegate number and close the deal.

What a joke. Also, dopey McCain and Huckabee had the least money for the Republicans and they were the only ones remaining at the end. McCain even managed to get nominated, by the dumb Republicans.

So all this talk about Obama's ability to raise large amounts of money mean squat.

Well, it's like anything else. You have to have enough to stay competitive. But then again, if the message isn't hitting, you could run ads day in and day out and still lose.

One of the pundits said today that he really lost Texas because he stayed in Ohio too much where he didn't have much of a shot.

I never know whether these observations are valid or not.

He won Texas and will gain 98 delegates to Hillary's 95. She's losing in votes, states, and delegates and she and her husband have succeeded in doing what no republican has been able to do - putting the African American vote up for grabs in the general election. So tell me again, what has she accomplished? IMO, not a gotdam thing.

And the winning big blue states' argument has been debunked the moment it came out of her mouth.

OBAMA '08. Join us. It's happier here.

Who cares how much money he raised?

Well, the HillBillies for a start. They care very deeply.

And in a larger sense the "superreprobates" should care.

Because no other candidate IN HISTORY has raised so much from so many small individual donors.

That correlates to electability.

Don't you know? The Big States aren't important.

He'll win those because Hillary supporters will just all magicall transfer to him.

*jeesh*

Don't these guys ever learn that the same arguments they use apply equally to their side?

My objection to the Reagan comment was precisely what unfolded......an anti-Clinton campaign strategy that has attracted most of the bloggers here, apparently, to the Democratic party.

I see virtually no progressive thinking here. I see only Republican thinking and obsession with hating Hillary. And I honestly didn't want to see the party go this direction.

I still don't.

I think it's been very ugly and divisive.

Alas, that was his strategy.

Still is.
