WASHINGTON — Democratic Sen. Barack Obama raised a record $55 million in February for his presidential campaign, eclipsing rival Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's own substantial fundraising for the month. All told, Obama has raised $193 million during his yearlong bid for the White House.

The campaign's announcement Thursday came two days after Obama lost three of four primaries to Clinton. Her victories stopped his winning streak and extended the race into an unpredictable future.

Obama's February total was his second fundraising record. He raised $36 million in January, more than any other presidential candidate who has ever been in a contested primary. His combined January and February totals nearly matched what he raised last year.

"That's a humbling achievement, and I am very grateful for your support," Obama said in another fundraising appeal. "No campaign has ever raised this much in a single month in the history of presidential primaries. But more important than the total is how we did it _ more than 90 percent of donations were $100 or less ..."

Until now, the high water mark for overall primary fundraising through February of an election year was set by President Bush in 2004, when he was unopposed. Bush had raised $155 million for the comparable period. Subtracting the money Obama has raised for the general election, Obama has raised more than $186 million.

Clinton raised an impressive $35 million in February, a significant recovery from January when Obama raised more than twice her total. But Obama has outpaced her both in fundraising and spending during the nominating contests.

More than $54 million of Obama's February money was for the primary election. The campaign said it raised $45 million through the Internet during the month and had 385,000 new contributors for a total of more than 1 million donors.

Details of their fundraising and spending for February won't be available until March 20, when the campaigns are required to file financial reports with the Federal Election Commission.

Story continues below

Riding her victory wave, Clinton's camp announced Thursday that she raised $4 million online since Tuesday's presidential primary successes in Ohio, Texas and Rhode Island.

The Clinton campaign said it had raised the money from the time polls closed Tuesday through noon Thursday. It reported 30,000 new donors. The influx of money made their online total raised for this month $6 million, the campaign announced.

With the outcome of their race uncertain, both campaigns are eagerly raising money for upcoming contests. The biggest one ahead is the April 22 primary in Pennsylvania, a state with two major media markets and a series of smaller ones that can consume advertising dollars. Obama has been airing television ads in Wyoming, which holds a caucus Saturday, and Mississippi, which holds a primary Tuesday. Both Obama and Clinton have radio ads in Wyoming and Obama has ads on radio in Mississippi as well.

Political advertising analyst Evan Tracey said a typical political ad buy in Pennsylvania would cost about half a million dollars a week. But with the high stakes in the state and the benefit of time, Tracey predicted both candidates would spend in excess of the more than $20 million the candidates spent advertising in Ohio and Texas combined.

Clinton advisers said they are optimistic about her chances in Pennsylvania and will move 200-300 staffers from Ohio and Texas to Pennsylvania, where they plan to open at least 23 offices across the state.

"We're going to have the funds we need to keep this campaign going, to keep Hillary Clinton's message out there," senior adviser Ann Lewis said in a teleconference with reporters.

Past victories have also caused upticks in giving. The Clinton campaign, for instance, raised more than $1 million in the 24 hours following her New Hampshire victory on Jan. 8. Obama raised $1.2 million the day after winning the Iowa caucuses and he raised even more in the 24 hours after losing in New Hampshire.

Clinton had to lend her campaign $5 million at the end of January, but has seen her finances improve since then. She reported raising $34 million for the primary in February.

Obama and his allies outspent her in Texas and Ohio in advertising.

Both campaigns have been the top fundraisers of the entire presidential field, raising $100 million each in 2007.

He went from 20 points back in Ohio and Texas 2 weeks ago to closing the gap in Ohio and keeping it even in Texas! He's winning in delegates, cash, 27 out of 41 states, character, substance, intelligence, ethics , humor, integrity.....oh and his supporters are pretty darn special too!

This campaign is NOT about Obama vs. Clinton.

It's about the Dem nominee vs. McCain.

Despite the fact that McCain hasn't a chance in hell in being President now or EVER, the real big question is who can defeat McCain squarely. Completely. Finally. With honors. Total crushing defeat of the neocon machine - and turn the tide on what American is all about.

Not Hillary. She is a 20th century politician. She represents dynasty, which is precisely what America is trying to prevent from happening. We've already had Bush Clinton Bush. We do NOT need another Clinton.

Don't forget these very important items:

1. If Hillary is the nominee it will unite the Republican party like no tomorrow. They will vote AGAINST her. They will come out in droves to vote AGAINST her. NOT to vote FOR McCain. But to vote AGAINST her.

2. They will vote AGAINST her and BILL. They hate Bill with a passion. They despise him. Neocons are united against HIM too. They don't want HIM back in the WH.

3. This election in November will not be just for President. It will be about 2-3 dozen seats in Congress, the vast majority of which are Republicans who could be soundly defeated. But not if Republicans see Hillary on the ballot. They will ALL vote for a straight Republican ticket to stop her every move. Thus, she'll not be able to do a thing. Nothing. Zilch.

So, think. THINK. THINK....T H I N K.....

This is NOT about Hillary beating Obama. It's about who can crush the neocons. Who can outwit them. Who's smarter than them.

Hillary is obviously capable. She's obviously smart. But is she capable of defeating an army of Republican voters who will make sure that she is stopped at every step of the way. If she's the President you can be assured of a Republican Congress.

Then all you Hillary voters will be eating crow.

Right. They'll have their female President and it won't amount to a single thing except four years of lameness. She has no coattails, even if she wins the General. She'll destroy the down ticket Dem candidates.

Yo... LeaderofMen.....
1. you say Hillary will make Repugs unite like never before - get real man, so will a black man who is far left. The Repubs are not that picky as to who they will unite more over.... even if we nominate Daffy Duck - they will fiercely fight... they always do.

2. Yes they hate Bill, cause he balanced the budget and made rich people pay their fair share of taxes. Balanced budget means less of your tax dollars go to paid "interest" to the Federal Reserve Bank for "lending" deficit money to our government.... that meas the private ownsers of the Fed Reserve MAKE LESS money when we have a balanced budget. So you are right, they - the power class who are backing the Republicans HATE the Clintons because they will diminish their vast accumulation of wealth which is contributed by you everyday you go to work and pay takes.

3. Faulty thinking here not worth responding too.

4. Repugs are afraid of the Clintons cause they know they are hard to beat, and will work like te Dickens for the every-day common working class man, woman and child.

The people are voting at the polls and with their wallets. Obama IS publicly financed, The People ARE the public. Hillary is financed by the waelthy, corporations, lobbyists who will all call in their chits if she was to win.

In bed with oil companies, Big Pharma, HMOs, endorsing McCain over Obama, using Rovian campaign tactics...Hillary is a DINO.

A little effort would have shown you that most of the people Obama donated to are either supporting Clinton or remaining neutral. He shared his money to help get more Democrats elected and re-elected BEFORE he decided to run for president and before anyone even thought superdelegates would matter at all. He shared more money because he is not as selfish as Clinton and wasn't always planning a run for presidency like she was, so she hoarded more money at the expense of the party.

Sharing money on hand to help others in the party is a good thing and not nefarious, specifically in the case of Barack Obama--- I can't be so sure with Hillary considering that she knew she would run since 2000. On HuffPo however, why should context, detail, or little things called facts matter as long as you get to see your name on screen again, right?

As a mom, citizen and Obama supporter I am happy he used his money to support fellow democratic superdelegates especially if Clinton is doing so. Clinton has been wooing superdelegates for the last 2 years. Please do not try to let your candidate off so easily.

I have been quite pleased to contribute to his campaign which has been the best run campaign I have seen in my lifetime. Unlike Hillary, Obama has been very smart with his funds raised by all of us citizens and had made us proud by the way he has carried himself.

This has been a campaign uniquely for the people by the people.

Oh when will this be

Live up to their hye-up
In the land of the fee

One more thing-- if Obama has an extra $1 million or so tucked under the cushions of his campaign bus, maybe he could spend them on some ads that say:

He's the head of the SUBcommittee that oversees NATO in Afghanistan-- the overseeing of the actual war in Afghanistan is done by the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, chaired by none other than John Kerry.

Kerry, who lost Ohio after a fearmongering ad featuring howling wolves in the deep of night, or early dawn, say around two, possibly, three a.m.

Simple question for the Clinton supporters (Clinton supporters don't like to look very deep)

Can Hillary win without playing dirty? Can she win a fair fight for the highest office in the land?

If the answer to this question is honestly no in your mind you need to do some soul searching and figure out why that is.

Barack closed the gap in Texas and Ohio....he was 20 points behind just 3 weeks ago....Voters have known the Clintons for a long time...she has name recognition....plus it's just been reported that 8-10% of votes that went for Hillary in Texas were votes from republicans who listened to Rush and voted for Hillary. The republicans want to run against Hillary. Obama's campaign contributions have come from the people, not lobbyists...Clinton's money has come from lobbyists who will want a seat at the table....plus foreign business men have donated anywhere from $500,000-one million dollars to Clinton Library....no one donates that kind of money unless they want something in return. The Clintons are thugs and they will lose in the end....do the math.

I don't think she plays dirty. She was aggressive, yes. But not unfair. She raised legitimate questions to voters, and they agreed, apparently.

I'd love to pin the Obama ad on his campaign, but there's no proof as to where that came from. Look at how it's being spun as a Clinton campaign dirty trick. However, the advertising director states flatly, those pictures are not in any Clinton ad. It's a phony internet scam story.

By the same token, Obama cannot and should not imply that Clinton released the photo of him the garb. That's unproven.

This kind of stuff needs to be sluffed off by all supporters. Wait for real validation, such as the NAFTA letter.

There are truly a lot of very ill people in the world who sabotage on the internet daily, etc.

None of us should take this stuff seriously.

As a woman, I'm deeply concerned if she becomes the 1st woman president. I want the first woman president to be a better person than a back-stabbing traitor who will win by any means necessary and exploit people who don't have the time or ability to really check her background for their votes. Senator McClaskey from Missouri would be a much better option for 1st woman president than Clinton anyday.

On my drive home, NPR is reporting that Obama will actually take the majority of Texas delegates, effectively winning the state of Texas. So the whole "reversal of fortunes" story was actually just another blip on the radar and the world continues spinning on its axis. Obama will wind up taking Texas by roughly what was expected in the pre-primary polling - or 56%.

So it seems that his numbers continue to climb unabated and nothing has actually happened in the past week to forestall the inevitable.

Momentum that is very quickly going to disappear. The next headlines you're going to read about contests is that Obama wins in WY and MS. Then she has no more momentum. He'll have won the last 14 out of 17 contests. I'd say that's still pretty good momentum.

Perhaps. But once this data becomes widely reported, whatever wind filled her sails will quickly die down and leave her in the doldrums again. It proves that no fundamental shift has occurred and that her campaign continues to founder. The magic "solution" to the Obama puzzle remains unsolved and she's run out of ways to reinvent herself. The "perception" might have raised her some money, but the facts will put another hole in her bucket.

I just hope the California trial starts soon where Hillary has to testify. If found guilty, she will do jail time. That should put an obstacle in her path.

Yes, there are Hillary Haters (this site isn't limited to posts by Democrats and/or liberals).

But to the Hillary Supporters who constantly reject (if not going as far as to denounce) Obama Supporters as Hillary Haters, as people just "spewing off" against Hillary, please consider this:

1. If you're against the Iraq War, you feel pretty strongly about that. It's nothing against Hillary personally, but she's wrong on that issue.

2. If you're against dirty, fearmongering campaigning, you'll react to it strongly. Hillary ran the "red phone" ad, not Obama-- nobody made her do it (not even the Devil, aka Karl Rove).

3. If a candidate tries to change the rules in the middle of the game, and overturn the voters' will with superdelegates, you feel as cheated by that candidate as you were by Katherine Harris certifying a false vote total in Florida, though Hillary's makeup is far superior to spooky Katherine's from 2000.

You won't get a reply from a Clinton supporter. They avoid well reasoned post like the plague. Great post however.

I think characterizing the phone ad as fear-mongering is a silly exaggeration.

It was highly effective. It drew a distinction.

And it made people think.

If it made people think, it's the same way a "48 Hours" murder mystery makes them think-- weird lighting, baby sleeping, phone ringing incessantly, strange sense of things gone awry, worried mother entering room, ringing, ringing . . .

Could Hillary please put that plan to bolster National Security on a pie chart, complete with figures related to money allotted to ports in order to check all containers that come in, and better ways the FBI and CIA can share information, and . . . oops, sorry to appeal to people's emotions.

Ringing . . . ringing . . .

It was highly effective.

It drew a distinction (unfounded) between HIllary Clinton and Barak Obama, using national security as a wedge issue, like Bush and the Republicans have done since 2001.

fear-mongering is using national security as a wedge issue. I'm on the other side of Hillary's wedge.

Having considered your three points, here is my response:

1. Having been against the war from day 1, I'm already holding it against every sitting politician on both sides of the aisle that let it happen and/or who've let it continue this long anyway, so Hillary and Obama both get a wash on this item.

2. I see little difference between Obama reminding everyone that Hillary voted to authorize the Iraq war, and wondering if we can the next president to be as mistaken or gullible, and Clinton airing the red phone ad. Both are examples of fear-mongering, but the red phone ad speaks to the to experience AND fear. I'm very afraid that the next President won't have to wait for that midnight call. He/she will be neck deep in shit the minute they takes the oath, and for me, experience trumps idealism by a long shot, especially in this very trying time. Bush and his idealists have left the nation is shambles, and I much rather have in the Whitehouse an old dog with the ethics of an ally cat instead of an untried puppy with his head in the clouds.

3. I already feel cheated. I live in Pennsylvania, and by the time I get to vote, it will be a done deal. But, as far as "changing the rules," the rules say there's a bunch of superdelegates that can vote either way, and that Michigan and Florida don't count. The rules don't say the superdelegates have to mirror the elected delegates, so I'm not sure who is trying to pull a Katherine Harris. And speaking of rules, what the current take on the Obama/McCaine pledges to take matching federal funds thing going?

I saw an empty headed Anderson Cooper on CNN say that Obama would do well in the cities because of the "large number of African-Americans". If he had said that Hillary will do well in the rural area because of the large number of white voters I could had heard the uproar all the way up here in Pickle Lake.

That is the kind of racial bigotry that Obama is fighting. Every network and every reporter says things just like that. It began after Bill Clinton and Johnson injected race into the campaign. All the time Hitlery is saying the media is against her. The truth is that the media is mostly against Obama and they make subtle racial remarks all the time. But Obama’s supporters are smarter that Hitlery's supporters. We know what is going on, but we continue to support the person best equipped to be the next POTUS.

Agreed. It's pickle headed nonsense. Obama is not winning because African-Americans are the only ones voting for him. AND BTW, not ALL of them are voting for him! He's won a number of southern states as well. Not all the African-Americans in those states live in big cities. Some of them even live in rural areas. Some of them are farmers.
