WASHINGTON — Democratic Sen. Barack Obama raised a record $55 million in February for his presidential campaign, eclipsing rival Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's own substantial fundraising for the month. All told, Obama has raised $193 million during his yearlong bid for the White House.

The campaign's announcement Thursday came two days after Obama lost three of four primaries to Clinton. Her victories stopped his winning streak and extended the race into an unpredictable future.

Obama's February total was his second fundraising record. He raised $36 million in January, more than any other presidential candidate who has ever been in a contested primary. His combined January and February totals nearly matched what he raised last year.

"That's a humbling achievement, and I am very grateful for your support," Obama said in another fundraising appeal. "No campaign has ever raised this much in a single month in the history of presidential primaries. But more important than the total is how we did it _ more than 90 percent of donations were $100 or less ..."

Until now, the high water mark for overall primary fundraising through February of an election year was set by President Bush in 2004, when he was unopposed. Bush had raised $155 million for the comparable period. Subtracting the money Obama has raised for the general election, Obama has raised more than $186 million.

Clinton raised an impressive $35 million in February, a significant recovery from January when Obama raised more than twice her total. But Obama has outpaced her both in fundraising and spending during the nominating contests.

More than $54 million of Obama's February money was for the primary election. The campaign said it raised $45 million through the Internet during the month and had 385,000 new contributors for a total of more than 1 million donors.

Details of their fundraising and spending for February won't be available until March 20, when the campaigns are required to file financial reports with the Federal Election Commission.

Riding her victory wave, Clinton's camp announced Thursday that she raised $4 million online since Tuesday's presidential primary successes in Ohio, Texas and Rhode Island.

The Clinton campaign said it had raised the money from the time polls closed Tuesday through noon Thursday. It reported 30,000 new donors. The influx of money made their online total raised for this month $6 million, the campaign announced.

With the outcome of their race uncertain, both campaigns are eagerly raising money for upcoming contests. The biggest one ahead is the April 22 primary in Pennsylvania, a state with two major media markets and a series of smaller ones that can consume advertising dollars. Obama has been airing television ads in Wyoming, which holds a caucus Saturday, and Mississippi, which holds a primary Tuesday. Both Obama and Clinton have radio ads in Wyoming and Obama has ads on radio in Mississippi as well.

Political advertising analyst Evan Tracey said a typical political ad buy in Pennsylvania would cost about half a million dollars a week. But with the high stakes in the state and the benefit of time, Tracey predicted both candidates would spend in excess of the more than $20 million the candidates spent advertising in Ohio and Texas combined.

Clinton advisers said they are optimistic about her chances in Pennsylvania and will move 200-300 staffers from Ohio and Texas to Pennsylvania, where they plan to open at least 23 offices across the state.

"We're going to have the funds we need to keep this campaign going, to keep Hillary Clinton's message out there," senior adviser Ann Lewis said in a teleconference with reporters.

Past victories have also caused upticks in giving. The Clinton campaign, for instance, raised more than $1 million in the 24 hours following her New Hampshire victory on Jan. 8. Obama raised $1.2 million the day after winning the Iowa caucuses and he raised even more in the 24 hours after losing in New Hampshire.

Clinton had to lend her campaign $5 million at the end of January, but has seen her finances improve since then. She reported raising $34 million for the primary in February.

Obama and his allies outspent her in Texas and Ohio in advertising.

Both campaigns have been the top fundraisers of the entire presidential field, raising $100 million each in 2007.

I look on these HuffingtonPost comments often to see some rational, well thought out arguments or reasons that Clinton supporters still believe their candidate can win. But all I see is a bunch of raving and no substance.
I'm an Obama supporter and I believe he will be the nominee (though the next months are going to be long and the arguments from Hillary nastier) because he is way up in delegates and garners support from more Superdelegates all the time. Tell me Hillary supporters, HOW CAN SHE STILL WIN?

Welly, if she wins it will be because she has successfully duped a sufficient number of people through her lies, smears, and mud slinging. She will not win in a fair fight by a long shot.

I know Barack is trying to keep his cool and play the game fair which is one of the reason I support him. However, the more Clinton keeps hitting below the belt the more I want to see him lash out and tear her a new one.

That's because you're convinced that if he's slightly ahead, he'll automatically get the super delegates.

That's untrue.

It's a very close race. He has the advantage of the delegates. Right now, she's got momentum.

And she's getting the momentum at the perfect moment in the campaign, I might add.

Actually, he is assuming that the DEMOCRATIC party will do the democratic thing and accept the people's choice for nominee. In case you are in completely kooky, the people's vote is represented by pledged delegates.

It sure is a pity that Sybil and HopeChange are going to spend all this cash throwing mud at each other.

McCain is going to spend five months raising cash and conservative support and keeping his powder dry.

Whoever limps out of Denver is going to get both barrels.

I am a democrat, but I still do agree with BushJustDrivesdemscrazy. Why can't the dems rally around the front runner like the republicans did? McCain is not liked by many in the republican party. However, they all rallied around him and they now have a clear nominee.

Dems, instead of rallying around the front runner (Obama), are fueling Hillary's negativity and destruction of the party. If the democratic voters had given Obama the victory in Texas and Ohio, Hillary would have been forced to quit and save the democratic party from blowing yet another golden chance of winning. It is not that I hate Hillary. If she was the front-runner, I would said the same thing for her too.

Is Obama that disgusting to democratic voters that they rather see pro-war, pro-rich tax cut, anti-women and gay rights, economy-dudd MacCain win in Nov.? It is up to the democratic voters to save the party from getting defeated in nov. and they seem to be doing an extremely poor job.

Thank you for this post. Seems to me the DNC has a choice, they can unify and not be bullied by the Clintons and those who support their divisive politics OR they can risk losing the race altogether. The Clintons had their 8 years in office. I guess it's up to the super delegates-- they can do math, it's time for them to cast their votes and make it clear that they will support the will of the people. If not, then I predict that even Ralph Nader will beat Clinton this year.

Hard to rally around a frontrunner when the electorate is split essentially 50/50... leaving two viable candidates (this is not uncommon at this point in a primary anyways).

This whole primary is shameful. These two have had to acknowledge consistently that they have the same agenda and the same policy proposals. Thus one makes the case that he'd be a more convincing figure head and one makes the case that she has the bureaucratic know-how to be effective. And thus Democratic Primary voters are forced to rally behind these rhetorical vagueries that are as impossible to attack as they are to defend. Another way of looking at it is that the electorate has eliminated dissenting opinions within the party and coalesced around two pro-corporate, fiscal conservative/social liberal "New Democrats" with dubious records of supporting US imperialist (with their votes, forget words)... essentially the same mainstream Democrats we have always seen... and so that it doesn't really matter which one wins because the same agenda gets passed. Unfortunately people are so entrenched in the rhetoric of "change" and "experience" that they have lost sight of why this rhetoric even has a place in the debate.

Consider this as 'walking around money' for a moment.

Well placed in a few districts, only where you need it to push you over the top.

At $200 a head this one month supply is 275,000 votes.

BTW, $200 is premium 'walking around money'..

I welcome any Democrat who still plans to vote for Clinton in the upcoming primary elections to answer this question- Why are you still voting for Clinton when she:

1. wants to violate party rules by seating delegates that should not count in their present form (MI/FL delegates),

2. has no problem with superdelegates choosing a nominee contrary to the nominee with the most pledged delegates AND

3. speaks worse of a fellow Democrat (he's just speeches) than she does of the Republican rival (he has experience)?

It takes a traitor to split a village.

Don't forget lies through her teeth with no remorse. Most recently the whole NAFTA gate thing that her campaign was responsible for then blamed it on Obama. Who in their right mind would vote for someone with a severe lack of morals and values like this woman.

The Clinton supporters shadow their candidate's values. They don't care how she wins only that she does. They are not ready to take a hard look at the lies and deceit she is feeding us. They like her want to win by any means necessary.

But their raving has a purpose . . . even if it's a purpose they're not entirely aware of. The Clinton operation wants only one thing: to win. And they do not care how they do it, so long as it gets done. They will, if they can, steal the nomination through superdelegates; figuring, with some justice, that the outrage in the press won't last more than a week (if that). After that, everything will go back to normal, Democrats will rally around because they'll have nowhere else to go, the corporate money will start pouring in, etc. Their supporters know all of this, and they're willing to put their moral sense (the few in possession of one) on hold for the duration.

Remember, they know how to manipulate anyone even remotely manipulable, and to achieve their objective (winning the election and keeping the war in Iraq going for as long as possible) they're capable of anything

Wake up Dems this is our race to lose and it looks like we're going to find a way to lose it. God help us.
