Obama's New Strategy: Blame The Media!

Oblame the media! In the wake of Tuesday's game-changing defeats in Texas and Ohio (and hey, Rhode Island), Barack Obama is clearly steamed that the media turned on him. Yesterday in a media avail on his plane, he accused the media of being complicit in Hillary Clinton's "kitchen sink" strategy and allowing themselves to be "persuaded that you had been too hard on her and too soft on me." This, Obama seemed to feel, was clearly an injustice and had resulted in the press' abdication of their duty: "Hopefully now people feel like everything's evened out and we can start actually covering the campaign properly." Oh, snap! Step up, media, you really dropped the ball this time. (See video below.)

This improper coverage he's referring to presumably includes Tuesday's press conference, which was variously described as "combative" and "contentious" during which he was "grilled"
in "the toughest news conference of his campaign." According to the Washington Post's Dana Milbank, Obama's initial smile upon greeting reporters was "quickly replaced by the surprised look of a man bitten by his own dog." But according to accounts of that press conference, the questions seemed legitimately driven by the news cycle, given the recent (and evolving) story of the report of an Obama staffer's backroom meeting with the Canadian embassy in Chicago to reassure them over NAFTA (which has since been dubbed "NAFTA-Gate" in some quarters, which can't thrill the Obama camp), and the kickoff of the Tony Rezko trial this past Monday. Also, according to Chicago Sun-Times columnist Lynn Sweet, the toughness was helped along by the presence of some Chicago-area media who have covered Obama for longer and as such were not as "shy" about asking for specifics (she mentioned Sun-Times political columnist Carol Marin, who is cited in numerous reports on the press conference, along with Sweet, as being particularly inquisitive). The grilling sounds like it was more like a quick pan-searing, too — Obama cut off questioning with exasperation, saying (in the most-quoted line of the press conference), "Come on guys. I answered like eight questions. We're running late." Then he left. He didn't come back to talk to the press on his plane later, either.

Like, eight questions! Press, get your act together. You've got a campaign to cover .

Obama, the candidate almost always described as "cool," seems to be betraying more than a touch of annoyance lately. Now that the heat is being turned up, and another long slog looms ahead before Pennsylvania, it will be interesting to see not only how the press behaves with respect to both candidates, but also how Obama responds under the harsh new glare — and whether he submits himself to it willingly or continues his pattern of keeping the press carefully at arm's length.

In the meantime, chief campaign strategist David Axelrod clearly knows that the best defense is a good offense, brazenly turning the media-favoritism meme around and throwing it back: "The point we want to raise is that the vetting of Hillary Clinton has yet to start and that the hard questions haven't been asked of Sen. Clinton. And as I said yesterday, what's good for the goose is good for the gander. We think that there ought to be the same standard held to both candidates."

The same standard held to both candidates? Wow - dare to dream. In the next few weeks, we may just see it happen.

All Barack needs to do is remain presidential and let Sybil I mean Hillary self-destruct as she is almost certain to do. I predict a world witnessed, smoke from the ears, head implosion, tailor made for must see TV consumption. Sadly the woman is ill, as in one day she's honored to be on the stage with him and the next he is unworthy to carry her water. C-R-A-Z-Y! Barack should deal with issues and not enter The Twilight Zone where she has the advantage. That's the bad part. The good part is if he stays ahead she might let him be her VP.

Sklar is not to be taken seriously.

What a sleazy post. The so-called NAFTA-gate has already been refuted. In fact, it's turning out it's Hillary's team that have been "making private reassurances" to Canadian officials. The Clintons really can't go low enough, can they?

What a terrible article. Where was this article when hilary was whining about the media's coverage of her? Just an awful, awful article. Why does hilary get to pick and choose when to play victim? Wasnt hilary the one crying and whining about alleged media unfairness. I think she's on her 10th strategy anyway and eventually her fearmongering and gutter politics will be exemplified and we'll rid her as a candidate.

Whew! Delusion, thy name is Rachel (and Hillary and Bill and Wolfson and Penn and Williams...) What a biased and desperate piece this was. From now on, MSNBC should require that she formally declare that she is 'in the tank' for Clinton(s) whenever she is called up to present her take on the campaigns.

This post has the same pathetic tone of the Clintons' campaign for a third term in the White House. Just a couple of points as example: The "NAFTA scandal" is not Obama's scandal, but Hillary's because it was her team that winked at the Canadians. Second point, since when did Hillary "win" Texas? Obama is coming out of the Lone Star state with more delegates than Hillary did, according to the caucus tallies (which are where the true Democrats, as opposed to Limbaugh's Republican cross-over voters, stood up for Obama over Hillary).

Don't scold Obama for getting flustered, if that is in fact what happened, after one press conference. On his worst day he has more poise and self-control than Hillary has ever exhibited on her best day.

Why is it all Repubs voting for Obama are visionaries and those voting for Clinton are nefarious.
It may be possible there are a lot of elderly women who skewed Republican in the past but are voting for Clinton.
But nooooo, it is all part of a, oh no, my god....VAST RIGHT WING CONSPIRACY

does nobody get it.
if everyone who wants to keep the Repubs out of the white house actually vote Dem and don't complain, because their nominee wasn't nominated and stay home.
The DEMS will win.
So guess what, we can support the party or half of us can go take our ball and go home. And help lead the country further down the hole.

Paper trail on Rezco dealings
oh and how about the earmark records for the years in the US Senate when you hadn't decided to run for the presidency.
I think they call this show me yours and I'll show you mine.

How about they both release the fact that they are lying about getting the troops out in 6 months.
Both of them Clinton and Obama.

Hope that doesn't cause the basic downfall of the party.

Irony? Since Rachel wrote this, about a half dozen Clinton questions and scandals have arisen and gotten heavy circulation. I guess we know why Hillary chose this strategy as a last resort.

What an absurdly biased article. Hillary and Bill Clinton have literally shut down the media coverage
of Hillary and now Bills stump speeches are becoming off limits. The media is falling all over themselves to praise Hillary on her empty attacks and politics of personal destruction as tough, good strategy. something that she has to do. It is turning my stomach. This kitchen sink tactic will drive people away as the media knows it will. It has happened before. This election is too important to be handled like the Paris, OJ and Brittany coverage. Egging on the "fight" is not serving the public well. Ratings, yes.

Rachel's appearances on MSNBC have been embarrassing. She can't even look the hosts or the camera in the eye as she spews out the Clinton talking points. She can't even believe what she's saying.

I already know you're a Clinton supporter, but if I didn't, do you know what would give it away? And this is usually the sign of good journalism - LOTS of exclamation points.

The "media" is a business--profit is the primary objective. Getting the most viewers, readers and internet hits translates into bottom-line dollars. I am not aware of any newspeople who do their jobs for free. The battle for media consumers to "pay attention" will always be with us.
With profit in mind I believe the media will always do whatever it can to fuel debate, contention, rumors and any remotely questionable behavior of politicians, celebrities and the growing number of infamous people to gain market share.
The Obama and Clinton campaigns understand and use the news cycle to their best advantage. So do celebrities. Why else do we continue to hear about Brittney Spears and Paris Hilton? Is it because of their talent or their press agents? I think we know the answer to that one!
Unfair? Of course, but not for any other reason than getting the news that gets attention--not the news that is worthy.

The "media" business is, as you say, for profit; but use of the public air waves also requires the media to provide a public service. Covering the primary race as if it is a boxing match isn't exactly serving the public's interest. That would require the media to sort out the facts from the fiction.
