Oblame The Media

Oblame the media! In the wake of Tuesday's game-changing defeats in Texas and Ohio (and hey, Rhode Island), Barack Obama is clearly steamed that the media turned on him. Yesterday in a media avail on his plane, he accused the media of being complicit in Hillary Clinton's "kitchen sink" strategy and allowing themselves to be "persuaded that you had been too hard on her and too soft on me." This, Obama seemed to feel, was clearly an injustice and had resulted in the press' abdication of their duty: "Hopefully now people feel like everything's evened out and we can start actually covering the campaign properly." Oh, snap! Step up, media, you really dropped the ball this time. (See video below.)

This improper coverage he's referring to presumably includes Tuesday's press conference, which was variously described as "combative" and "contentious" during which he was "grilled"
in "the toughest news conference of his campaign." According to the Washington Post's Dana Milbank, Obama's initial smile upon greeting reporters was "quickly replaced by the surprised look of a man bitten by his own dog." But according to accounts of that press conference, the questions seemed legitimately driven by the news cycle, given the recent (and evolving) story of the report of an Obama staffer's backroom meeting with the Canadian embassy in Chicago to reassure them over NAFTA (which has since been dubbed "NAFTA-Gate" in some quarters, which can't thrill the Obama camp), and the kickoff of the Tony Rezko trial this past Monday. Also, according to Chicago Sun-Times columnist Lynn Sweet, the toughness was helped along by the presence of some Chicago-area media who have covered Obama for longer and as such were not as "shy" about asking for specifics (she mentioned Sun-Times political columnist Carol Marin, who is cited in numerous reports on the press conference, along with Sweet, as being particularly inquisitive). The grilling sounds like it was more like a quick pan-searing, too — Obama cut off questioning with exasperation, saying (in the most-quoted line of the press conference), "Come on guys. I answered like eight questions. We're running late." Then he left. He didn't come back to talk to the press on his plane later, either.

Like, eight questions! Press, get your act together. You've got a campaign to cover .

Obama, the candidate almost always described as "cool," seems to be betraying more than a touch of annoyance lately. Now that the heat is being turned up, and another long slog looms ahead before Pennsylvania, it will be interesting to see not only how the press behaves with respect to both candidates, but also how Obama responds under the harsh new glare — and whether he submits himself to it willingly or continues his pattern of keeping the press carefully at arm's length.

In the meantime, chief campaign strategist David Axelrod clearly knows that the best defense is a good offense, brazenly turning the media-favoritism meme around and throwing it back: "The point we want to raise is that the vetting of Hillary Clinton has yet to start and that the hard questions haven't been asked of Sen. Clinton. And as I said yesterday, what's good for the goose is good for the gander. We think that there ought to be the same standard held to both candidates."

The same standard held to both candidates? Wow - dare to dream. In the next few weeks, we may just see it happen.

The New York Times doesn't believe that it was harder on Hillary than Obama http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/09/opinion/09pubed.html?ex=1362715200&en=63ca93735ff6f1df&ei=5088&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss but Hillary sure made the MSM believe they were and thus they bent over backwards to be nice to her. Case in point - Hillary wins Texas. Nonsense, Obama will end up with the majority of delegates from Texas. That's winning to me.

Somehow Hillary will figure out how to cheat and will win this thing. And hundreds and thousands of us will go back in the holes we came out of for another 20 years as the rest of you watch reruns of Monica and Bill and Hillary and the vast right wing conspiracy.

My favorite line from CNN: "Clinton was afraid of a blowout in Wyoming but she held on there."

61-38 isn't a blowout? Oooookay.

The Clinton camp, along with all their kool-aid drinkers, and the complicit media_who can't get enough of perfectly tailored squabling_are only prolonging an inevitable result. Worse than that is they don't care if the Democratsare ruined in the process.

Rachel Sklar, please STFU. No one has whined, cried, complained, and thrown temper tantrums more than Hillary. She is the Janus-faced Monster, half victim and half bully. Your post is so delusional, it deserves no response.

Rachel, just put on a gigantic Hillary button next time you go on the MSNBC news shows during the day and quit pretending that you are impartial. It's insulting!

That's the truth.

It's sad really the effort it takes for one to continue to delude themselves in order to continue to be a Billary apologist.

I think the issue is that the media attacked him at the BEHEST of Clinton. And in case you don't have a television, Hellery did not win Texas!!!

You lost me at "game changing". A loss by Clinton in either one would have been game-changing.

Other than that, the story remains the same - Clinton wins in her fortress states and loses everywhere else.

The media is toxic. You haven't been able to dig up enough crap on someone like Obama so you spin and spin any little chance of a story until it is blown out of proportion.

Years ago I gave up all commercial media: tv, ny times, wsj and other magazine publications. Most "journalists" have actively contributed to the hatred and division in this country while dropping the ball on stories that are relevant and require attention.

.i.e, the troops (multiple stories), dead and displaced Iraquis, (corrupt) contractors in iraq, US torture policies, guantanamo, homeland security and wiretapping on US citizens, rendition...does ANY of this ring a bell?

Honeslty the lines between "Entertainment tonite" type of shows and msnbc news are so blurred that
it is impossible to take any of you seriously.

Rachel, I work in media and I NOW BELIEVE the media is the problem. -- -- The 24-hour news cycle of repetitive sensationalism, talk radio's vitriol, the 2nd and 3rd source innuendo reported as fact (read Neil Postman's "Amusing Ourselves To Death") has CONVINCED me that the media is partly responsible and culpable for this WAR in Iraq (as well as this administration's occupation of the White House for the past eight years). -- --

Abraham Lincoln could not have been elected if today's media had been this prevalence in the 1860's.

You think he blew his cool????? After what she pulled out of her pants before the the last big one???

I think he's shown again and again calm and cool against her machine's Rovian tactics. Why he hasn't and the media haven't challenged her 35-year experience history, and he hasn't responded with his experience in the 6 years he was in the Illinois Senate which, on close inspection, was pretty extensive and showed grit....that he even got elected shows grit. He's about the same age as Bill was when he entered the WH and has more legislative experience than Hillary has, He's nearly 15 years Hillary's junior, but has more true experience up until now than she did at his age. She's tough all right, but I'll opt for strong before tough.

I truly blew my cool after seeing her week-long pre-primary low-ball toss. I find myself actually frightened to think of her anywhere near the WH.....again.

It's becoming clear that this might have been a different campaign if there had been more Chigago-area reporters covering it....... whose immune systems have had time to build up antibodies to Sen. Obama's amazing hypnotic powers......and might ask him some pertinent questions other than the usual.......

Look, Prince Obama has to do these things to get himself over the hump:

1: WIN BIG STATES. Pretty simple, right? Mo and ILL besides.

2: Hit the Clintonistas as hard as they hit him. C'mon, this is for all the marbles. Don't let this VP crap stop ya.

3: If there are More debates (PA, FLA, MI I'm lookin' at you)-be more aggressive.

4: Stick a sock into Russert's mouth next time he sez 'Farrakhan'.

5: Come clean on Rezko w/out walking out on the suddenly non-goo-goo eyed Media. C'mon guy it ain't gonna get any easier from here til Nov.

6: Take Oprah's money and tell her to go away otherwise.

7: Beg or borrow or steal the support of Edwards and/or Gore at any cost.

8: Be nice to Hispanics. They can help you.

9: Be nice to blue collar/non-colleger white people. They can help you too.

10: Pretend you like Nascar.

All those words, and you left out the most important one: "delegates".

Actually, I'll add an 11th: Try not to make it too obvious that he's just coasting from here on out.

The point is that Obama is complaining about the press now that he's faced the smallest bit of scrutiny--not that Hillary has never complained about the press.

Gues you obama lovers won't see what you don't want to see. If Obama is so open, honest, and new, why does he talk to the press less than John McCain and Hillary Clinton combined? The reason is that he's hoping to get through this thing quickly, before anyone realizes what a sham his campaign actually is.

The reason is that "the press" is moroic and bigotted. How many "mistakes" wer made early on by Yahoo news and Fox calling Obama Osama and printing stories about him being in a madrasa and thus being a Muslim and by implication a terrorist.

There was no challenge to that, and to this day in Ohio the stories still abounded that he is Muslim (thanks Hillary). Why would you tlak to the "press" if they are just making stuff up, not unlike this poster.

One can not really call Fox news the "press." They are not journalists. They are conservative ideologues.

He will now be under scrutiny like the other candidates....he hasn't been around as long, that's all. Now that he is/was winning, of course everyone will look at him more closely. But, lets face it, he can't win...he didn't say he was god and didn't ask for this love affair - the media made it all up. So why are you all blaming him for this?
He has to ask some questions of Hillary - what experience she has, taxes, WH records, etc. what has she got to hide?
Maybe there just isn't that much re Rezko - did you all ever consider that?
Hillary has spent many many years bickering about the press - when she often provoked their prodding due to her withholding information (that is not to say the Ken Star investigation went way beyond being fair and he should have been cut off midway) - but, again, Obama is not to be blamed for what ails Hillary, nor should she be blamed for what his problems provoke.

He talks to the press constantly. There are other reporters besides Dana Milbank, Tim Russert, Chris Matthews, et. al.

Maybe he's tired of hearing "Al Gore invented the internet! lol" jokes.

I think he's responded to the press with dignity and intelligence. He hasn't cried, whined, or even raised his voice once... unlike his opponent.

And really, unless YOU'RE married to Bill, it will be none of your business where he is? You really should be asking about the whereabouts of your wife, or whatever you have.

Bill's whereabouts may be none of Jeremy's business, bt you can be sure the press and especially the Republicans will scrutinize Bill (as well as Hilary)i she is the nominee, and that was the pint Jeremy was making.
