Clinton Experience

With a debate raging over which presidential candidate has the most experience and best judgment on world affairs, the Chicago Tribune examines Sen. Hillary Clinton's record:

Pressed in a CNN interview this week for specific examples of foreign policy experience that has prepared her for an international crisis, Clinton claimed that she "helped to bring peace" to Northern Ireland and negotiated with Macedonia to open up its border to refugees from Kosovo. She also cited "standing up" to the Chinese government on women's rights and a one-day visit she made to Bosnia following the Dayton peace accords.

Earlier in the campaign, she and her husband claimed that she had advocated on behalf of a U.S. military intervention in Rwanda to stop the genocide there.

But her involvement in the Northern Ireland peace process was primarily to encourage activism among women's groups there, a contribution that the lead U.S. negotiator described as "helpful" but that an Irish historian who has written extensively about the conflict dismissed as "ancillary" to the peace process.

The Macedonian government opened its border to refugees the day before Clinton arrived to meet with government leaders. And her mission to Bosnia was a one-day visit in which she was accompanied by performers Sheryl Crow and Sinbad, as well as her daughter, Chelsea, according to the commanding general who hosted her.

Whatever her private conversations with the president may have been, key foreign policy officials say that a U.S. military intervention in Rwanda was never considered in the Clinton administration's policy deliberations. Despite lengthy memoirs by both Clintons and former Secretary of State and UN Ambassador Madeleine Albright, any advice she gave on Rwanda had not been mentioned until her presidential campaign.

CNN, meanwhile, examined her statements case-by-case:

Northern Ireland

"I helped to bring peace to Northern Ireland," Clinton said on CNN's American Morning on Wednesday. Video Watch more of Clinton's comments on the race »

A Washington Post blogger accused Clinton in January of exaggerating her involvement in Northern Ireland.

But former Democratic Senate majority leader George Mitchell, who was a U.S. special envoy to Northern Ireland, told CNN that while Clinton was not directly involved in negotiations, she did play a helpful role in bringing in women's groups that made a difference.

Mitchell is a Democratic superdelegate and has not publicly endorsed Clinton or Obama.

Rep. Peter King, a Republican from New York, was also involved in the process. He recalls one late-night meeting with former President Bill Clinton, Sen. Clinton and Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams.

"There was a discussion of how the IRA would decommission its weapons. And I know that Sen. Clinton was part of that meeting," King said.

Kosovo

"I negotiated open borders to let fleeing refugees into safety from Kosovo," she said on CNN's American Morning.

In May of 1999, she was in Macedonia visiting refugee camps near the Kosovo border and meeting with Macedonia's president and prime minister.

Sources with knowledge of her visit say she discussed the refugees' plight with those leaders. It's not clear how much she helped since CNN reported at the time that Macedonia reopened its border to Kosovar refugees before Clinton's visit.

China

"I've been standing up against, you know, the Chinese government over women's rights and standing up for human rights in many different places," she said on CNN's American Morning.

During a 1995 visit to Beijing, at a time when her husband's administration was trying to press China on human rights, Sen. Clinton made a speech condemning abuses.

"No one should be forced to remain silent for fear of religious or political persecution, arrest, abuse or torture," she said.

But a former National Security Council official in the Clinton administration says Clinton didn't attend NSC meetings. So while her experience is extensive, she rarely carried an official portfolio.

You would think that the woman who had to listen to Billy "Club" Clinton lie about other women would have ears that detect bull shi ... er poop from a mile away.

Yet she said that she was misled about the her vote to give the dimmest and dumbest of all presidents in history the power to start an immoral and unjustified war of preemption.

I'm just saying that the monster voted for an immoral war

wow..just call her Eleanor.........after botching health care with a democratic house and senate and telling senators like bill bradley and daniel monyahan to pound sand .. the gop parlayed that failure and took over congress for the next 12 yrs.......bill banished her to the tea and biscuit circuit for the next 6 yrs of his term and this is what she accomplished.. her senate record is even lighter than this....funny how half the democratic party in the senate voted no on the iraq war.. and anyone who was interested in a presidential run voted yes.. like edwards , kerry and clinton.. at least those two admitted it was a mistake.......as colin powell once said .. the pottery barn theory applies when it comes to war.. you broke it , you bought it.. the first vote is all that matters.......but she never admitted it was a mistake and it has cost her dearly .. all that calculated planning since 2000, down the drain to my boy from Illinois..........no wonder she has gone bipolar and has throw away her lithium medication..........her career is about to go down the drain .. her only hope now is to make nice which she appears to be doing by hinting about a VP spot.......she makes it sound like it will be her on the top but anyone with a brain knows that every action she takes has a method behind it......but it may be too late..........obama may need someone who can help him win a state like virgina or colorado.. how about colin powell.............that would certainly solve the national security questions and stop mccain in his tracks.

I would really like to believe that some of this will be in the mainstream tv news - where most of America gets its facts. She is lying and fabricating because she seems to know he can get away with it! I once dated a professional football player - guess I'm qualified to replace Brett Favre!

I could have told you that.

Duh, why do you think she don't want her records released?

"She visited when things were happening, saw what was going on, she can certainly say it was part of her experience. I don’t want to rain on the thing for her but being a cheerleader for something is slightly different from being a principal player." Ex-Minister of Northern Ireland, Nobel Prize Winner

I've long given up on the media in this country. How hard would it be for ONE reporter to ask Hillary to tell us what exactly she has DONE in terms of foreign policy that makes her more qualified than Obama? Why won't ONE single reporter ask her for concrete examples that can be researched for accuracy? Why can't ONE reporter ask to name the world leaders she claims to know? I mean...most if not all of the world leaders she met in the 1990s are no longer in power. Is this too much to ask of our reporters?????

Hillary "the monster" Clinton has as much experience as first lady as Laura Bush has. I think Laura Bush has been to Iraq and Afghanistan and yes, China too. May be she should run for President. Oh, wait, first she must move to a big state such as Texas to run for senator. Oops, she came from Texas so give Laura a head start there. The monster woman is a two faced liar. First she said momentum doesn't matter when she had more delegates, then she said it's about momentum after she won Texas and Ohio, and after she won Ohio, all other states don't matter. Oh, wait, I don't think she won the delegates in TX. So who are you kidding monster? This deceitful woman is playing us for suckers as she continues to manipulate the media and playing small state big state crap. I will vote for my dog if the monster Hillary Clinton wins.

It seems to me that she is exaggerating her "work" on issues. I find it insulting that she claims the experience that a Laura Bush or a Bess Truman could equally claim: yet, she repeatedly claims she "ready on day one." Being in the room when penicillin was discovered does not make you the discoverer! And to any one who believes her resume padding, why will the Clintons not release her records of her "work" or "experience" in the WH? Re-writing of history is getting tiresome.
And she feels free to criticize Obama on experience -- yet he is the Senator who has introduced major legislation. Her kind of "work" is voting on honorific naming of buildings. (see thomas.gov)

It has already been reported on several times that she did not have security clearance that allowed her to even be in the room. So more accurately, knowing the guy who invented penicillin does not make you the discoverer. Secondly, while Obama has campaigned extensively on setting a new tone in politics, he can not do this alone. Only when we, the voters, demand better will we receive better. Until then, we are left with the say anthing, do anything to win Clintons

Another case of the Clinton Regime 'SAYING ANYTHING' to get back to the White House.

It's like they left something there, some alien orb that gives them omnipotent power to lie to America. This will be a worse mistake than the Bush years because the Clintons are smart....and monsters
