French Women: The New Sexual Predators

French women are becoming increasingly assertive in their sexual habits, while one-in-five younger French men "has no interest in sex", according to one of the most comprehensive surveys of the nation's love lives.

Women now have more than twice as many partners as they did in the 1970s, according to the study by the French Aids research agency, which is backed by the government.

"Are women just like men?" asked Le Nouvel Observateur yesterday, which released extracts of the Study on Sexuality in France, a 600-page tome that brings together 12,000 in-depth interviews with people of all ages conducted during 2005-06.

One of the biggest changes in recent years, according to the report, was that male and female sexual behaviour had become increasingly similar.

Female sexual emancipation has been a hot topic in France ever since President Nicolas Sarkozy met Carla Bruni, the Italian model and singer. The couple married last month.

Ms Bruni recently declared monogamy "terribly boring" and spoke in relaxed fashion about her numerous past conquests, including Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton.

"I am a tamer [of men], a cat, an Italian", she told Le Figaro last year.

"I am faithful... to myself. I am monogamous from time to time but I prefer polygamy and polyandry [its female equivalent]."

So long as it gives her offspring a survival advantage, which prestige and power infer, it fits into the instinctual behaviours of monkeys, which humans indisputably are. Monogamy probably isn't so boring when the chances for a more prestigous mate aren't as likely.

Seriously, the press has been perpetually 'surprised' by the existance of sexually assertive woman for at least three decades now. That's a loooong time to stay surprised. From my own limited experience sexually assertive women have *always* accumulated more partners on average than Joe-sixpack ever could. The main difference lately appears to be that women feel somewhat less obliged to be apologetic for their private conduct. Woman are in the game for the 'love' ...excepti­ng those visits to the seaside clubs on weekends and those three cute guys she's currently got on a string. Besides that, she's in it for he love.

Your characterization of men is sexist, men and women are no doubt different in their sexuality but I for example will choose love over sex as I have done many times. Feelings are very important for both genders and also meaningless sex could solve some needs in both women and men. We are individuals with changing minds one day Mesalina the next Virgen Mary one day Casanova the next Jesus Christ. Contradiction defines humans of both sexes.

I've known more than a few women who were 100% in it 'for the love' ...and were willing to go through as many men as it took until until they located that 'soulmate'. Rather like Sherman's march to the sea. Sure women will cry and eat Haagendaz by the pint after a breakup (to bring up a worn cliche), but they get back up on the horse quick enough. Men tend the put on a brave face but feel squashed like a bug. As the old saying goe it takes 2 to Tango. You can't have a 'Don Juan' without also having ALOT of eager partners.
