A firm, hearty handshake is always an appropriate way for men to greet each other. But when men achieve a greater familiarity, a man hug becomes appropriate. Some men fear male on male hugging of any kind. But done in an appropriate way, men can still hug while remaining secure in their manhood.

McCain can't raise his arms past his chest because of his plane crash , capture and torture. I don't care for the man or want him as president but this is cruel and out of bounds. Go after his embracing Bush's policies but don't mock him physically, please.

The thirty year phenomenon of heterosexual men hugging was based on the belief that American men were unable to show affection, especially for each other. Straight men don't have to show affection for each other. The old fashioned handshake is just fine and is accepted globally. Let's move away from the seriously uncomfortable and inappropriate back slapping as seen on Letterman and Leno and return to the dignified handshake.

I don't care for McCain and DON"T want him as President BUT he has a problem lifting his arms due to his plane crash and torture! Don't do this kind of thing to him, it's horrible and has nothing to do with his politics. Talk about his verbal hugs but don't hit the man on anything physical because he really doesn't deserve it. It's not hard to find the footage of his injuries way back when, leave him alone on this.

The Smirking Chimp's handlers have effected a masterful manipulation, as must be the case to have a perennial, consistent stream of people who should know better paying homage and deferring on bended knee to the sadistic scared little boy man.

Particularly hilarious in this regard are the vacuous drones of the mainstream media and the countless saluting fools atop the military hierarchy.

In bigger picture terms, it's rather like observing the fall of the Roman Empire compressed into a very short time frame.

i'm no fan of mccain......but if it's true that he can't lift his arms up above his chest, then this is a pretty cruel. still, the very notion that mcsame embraced mcchimpy is what's so gross.

Just remembered, the book title is "Clues for the Clueless". It's very funny.

I refer everyone to a Scott Adams book, featuring Dogbert on points of etiquette. The main thing for
men, is that you have to lean fairly far forward, so none of the unmentionable parts touch.

This might be the most pathetic thing I've seen so far on this website. Way to go perpetuating homophobia, that's just what this country needs more of. Idiots!

To enveg01 and Eric8869, if you're responding to the original post, it was certainly tongue in cheek,
and not serious, and I'd work on developing a sense of humor. I found that HuffPost's system is not
working properly and put a reply of mine before a post of mine that was meant to correct it. If your comments are directed to my post, Scott Adams is the author of the Dilbert cartoons, and is really
poking fun at our human foibles. Incidently, I am a supporter of gay rights and marriage, and over
the years have had a number of gay friends, (our common interest was classical music), and
they were absolutely scrupulous in recognizing my heterosexuality.

newshawk14:

I do not understand why you would mention that your gay friends would be at pains in 'recognizing your heterosexuality'. Why would that be important to you? Did you in some shape or form request of them that they not 'suspect' your orientation should you express some sort of affection to them in the name of friendship?

Why do I need a sense of humor because I think it's sad the way straight men put barriers between their intimacy with each other? That was my point.

I have a great sense of humor. If I didn't I wouldn't be able to take all the gay jokes in all the television, movies, posts etc etc. You get used to it.

Yes Scott Adams is the cartoonist who writes humorous cartoons about office life but he is for downsizing. He makes his money from the common experience of the office worker but supports people who are against those very workers. He's a real laugh riot.

I don't care how many gay friends you have - I was just pointing out that when your a straight man and you're best friend is crying over his marriage you should be able to embrace him. Not do a fist pump with him.

newshawk14 - I was not responding to anything you wrote, merely to the article itself. Gay men and women are constant fodder for comedians who seem to enjoy in endlessly picking on the last minority (with the exception of women) that's socially acceptable to make fun of. Please spare me with how many gay friends you have and what your common interests are. How utterly transparent that you just had to mention your heterosexuality... just to make sure no one might think you're, heaven forbid, a homosexual! No wonder you thought this was funny.

As a gay man I am constantly amused at how many lengths straight men will go to to avoid contact while showing affection for each other.

The fist tapping so you don't even have to touch hands. The hug with the handshake in the middle so you don't actually touch. The backslapping instead of embracing etc etc etc.

It's just a hug - you're not gay - get over it! I feel sorry for you.

Point of info here, E. The fist tap is an adaptation of Black men to a situation. So many Black men were stopped and frisked because cops always think that Brother's hand shake was an act of passing drugs or something silly like that

Well don't pass drugs and they won't be looking for that. Easy solution.

uhhh....as a woman who hunts, i've always had it impressed upon me that the paramount rule in a situation when you're hunting for bear is to make sure of and choose your target well. mccain has failed utterly on both counts.

The official hug of the Republican Party is the "Larry Craig Reach-Around". McCain and Bush need to take a few pointers from Craig and Foley and Dreier and Crist on how to do it properly.

McCain has embraced Bush body and soul . . . after insulting his family and had his own integrity slammed, McCain proves to America just how much he wants the Presidency . . . and judging from his continual history of speaking out of both ends of his body, no issue is above a good pander . . . America does NOT need to extend the ignorant self centered greed driven Bush Administration in ANY shape PERIOD!

What McCain brings we don't need . . .

McCain Courts Secret Radical Religious Conservative Group For Support In Presidential Bid

............... McCain is continuing his tradition of courting the bigoted right-wing fringe. This afternoon, McCain addressed the Council for National Policy (CNP) in New Orleans in a "make-or-break pitch" for support from the secretive, ultra-conservative group that describes itself as a "self-selected, conservative counterweight" against "liberal domination of the American agenda." McCain advisor Charlie Black said McCain "was anxious to appear" in front of the group.............
