Samantha Power: From Obama Asset To Campaign Casualty

Samantha Power: From Obama Asset To Campaign Casualty

March 7, 2008 02:16 PM

In early 2005, Samantha Power was working on a follow up to her Pulitzer Prize winning book ""A Problem from Hell: America and the Age of Genocide," when she got a call from the office of Sen. Barack Obama.

She had never heard of the freshman Democrat who had taken office just months earlier. So Power researched him, downloading the famous address Obama gave to the Democratic convention the summer prior. The two met shortly after -- it was only supposed to last an hour but they ended up talking for four.

"Why don't I quit my job at Harvard and come and intern in your office and answer the phones or do whatever you want?' It was literally that spontaneous," she recalled saying. To which, the senator responded: "Great."

And so it was that Obama scored what was hailed as a staffing coup only months into his time in Washington. Power, who was working at the time for Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government, was widely considered to be one of the most forward-thinking, gifted foreign policy minds of her generation. In 2004, she was named by Time Magazine as one of the 100 top thinkers of the year.

That Obama could bring her on board -- he was, Power said, the first government official to have ever called her -- was emblematic of the different style of politics that the Illinois senator was promising to represent. Far from a down-the-line liberal on international affairs, Power was known for her innovative (if not self-reflectively painful) analysis. On the Rwanda genocide, she concluded that U.S. officials had worked to ignore the problem, not failed to address it. On the Israeli-Palestinian crisis, she once advocated (though later recanted) spending billions of dollars and sending a military force to help create a Palestinian state next to Israel.

The relationship ended on Friday after Power resigned from Obama's presidential campaign. Her comments, made to the Scottsman, that Sen. Hillary Clinton was a "monster" devoted to political opportunism, were responsible for her departure.

"With deep regret, I am resigning from my role as an advisor the Obama campaign effective today," Power wrote. "Last Monday, I made inexcusable remarks that are at marked variance from my oft-stated admiration for Senator Clinton and from the spirit, tenor, and purpose of the Obama campaign. And I extend my deepest apologies to Senator Clinton, Senator Obama, and the remarkable team I have worked with over these long 14 months."

Power's fall from campaign grace was as abrupt as it was newsworthy. Only an hour before her resignation was made public, surrogates to Clinton convened a conference call demanding her firing. An hour later, Terry McAuliffe, a chief Clinton aide, sent out an email using Power's remarks to help solicit campaign donations.

And yet, while there is an acknowledgment that Power likely had to resign because of what she said, there is also a deep regret that the Democratic Party, for the time being, is losing one of its brightest thinkers. Indeed, even as she worked for Obama's senate office, Power found the time to write another book: "Chasing the Flame: Sergio Vieira de Mello and the Fight to Save the World." Her friend and political rival, Richard Holbrooke, proclaimed Obama "very fortunate to have her."

"Samantha is one of the most creative and dynamic thinkers on the political horizon," said John Prendergast, co-chair of The ENOUGH Project, an initiative to end genocide and crimes against humanity. "She is driven by deep compassion and conviction, something our foreign policy establishment badly needs at this moment in history. Removing her voice from deliberations over monumental security challenges is unfortunate, and hopefully only temporary."

There have been similar instances in which presidential campaign aides have taken the ax for their actions or remarks. In 1988, John Sasso, who was serving as Michael Dukakis' chief of staff, resigned from the campaign after it was revealed that he had leaked documents showing that Sen. Joseph Biden, a presidential candidate at the time, had plagiarized portions of his speech. That same election another Dukakis aide, Donna Brazile, was fired after she urged reporters to investigate then-Vice President George Bush's alleged marital infidelity. This election cycle, former Sen. John Edwards was released two bloggers after they were criticized for anti-religious postings.

But Power's resignation, political observers say, may have been the product of a prolonged and increasingly heated campaign season -- one that has been based, in large part, on denouncing negative campaigning -- as mush as her own words.

Indeed, when Billy Shaeheen, a surrogate to Clinton hinted at Obama's past drug use, he too was let go by the campaign.

"The whole Democratic race has ratcheted up in intensity. It is just incredibly meaningful right now," said Stu Rothenberg, editor of The Rothenberg Political Report. "And so there is a tendency for people to kind of snap or say things that are more caustic and negative than they would. There is also a fatigue factor; this has been a long race. Staff has as much invested, maybe more, than the candidate, it sometimes seems... This is not breaking the law to call your opponent a monster. That's just politics."

Too bad only one democratic campaign has principles.
Howard Wolfson should resign for comparing Barack Obama's tactics to those of Ken Starr, but that won't happen.
Rove must be so proud of the Clinton campaign.

I thought after '04 we had had enough of fear and smear, but Clinton isn't giving up on it, and sad to say, it works.

Maybe Hillary is right after all that it is foolish to hope for any change - but I'm not ready to give up.

I don't think "monster" that bad or inaccurate, but in the interest of trying to raise the campaign above the gutter the Clintons have gone to, the Obama camp did the right thing, but get criticized for it?

we have three choices ahead of us:

Senator Clinton - strong on war against terror,
strong on economy and on solving economic problems.
two pluses!

Senator McCain - strong on war against terror,
by his own words does't understand economy.
one plus,one minus.

Senator Obama - can not be trusted on war against terror,
weak on economy ,said his advisors will help him rule
America for the good of the World.
We see how his advisors act. It's scarry.
Every person ,who wants to change America
and whole World,
deserves at least to be examined.
one minus,one minus.
two minuses.

Now about hate:

Senator Obama uses hate,as a tool all the time.
First, from the beginning he tried to inject hate, telling,
that half of America hate Clintons, and that people hate Clintons era.

Then he painted Clintons as racists.Wanted to inject racial hate.

And now he is trying to convinse democrats to hate Clintons, blaming that they want to devide Democratic party.

Most of democrats support senator Clinton and superdelegats must choose this side,

Obama has support of AA part of democratic party, but it is much less then a half of democrats, and he makes differense with independent voters and obamacans-Obamas republicans, whom he told many times in different worlds but with the same message of HATE,something like:

COME TO ME,ALL OF YOU WHO HATE SENATOR CLINTON,HALP ME TO STOP HER.

I don't think superdelegats need to be on this side.

Yes,superdelegats must be on the side where most of democrats are,on the senator Clintons side.

Take a look on Obamas camp, all of them hide lots of hate underneath of "message of hope".

So,i got my first choice-senator Clinton,
and my second choice -senator McCain.

Sorry ,i can't vote for senator Obama,i can't trust on war, on Rezco, too much hate too,and i can't trust his advisors eather,i don't trust he can win:obamacans-republicans will go to McCain,,Latinos will go to McCain, workers want safe America, will go to McCain.
Who will stay with senator Obama, who?

I think Sam Powers is brilliant and a class act... but she made a mistake, and Barack made it clear that he didn't want personal attacks. Hopefuly she'll be back at some point. I personally agree with her comments, but the poster who said we need to tone down the vitrol against Hillary is probably right.

I honestly can't believe the Obama girls are actually blaming the Clintons for this. I thought I saw everything when the GOP went around blaming Bill Clinton for everything after he was out of office, but this takes the cake. I don't know if I would call the Hillary Hatred from the Obama Girls worse than the GOPers in the 90's, but I will say it hurts more. I expect better from fellow Democrats. This is not Hillary Clinton's fault, anybody knows that you don't call your opponent a monster. I can forgive Samantha Powers for her slip, but the posts in here are unforgivable, You people should be ashamed of yourselves.

Even smart people make mistakes; that said I would not be surprised if this incident did not do Obama some good.

Clinton and her supporters, including former Pres. Clinton, have made the most vile comments about her fellow Democrat; where are the apologies, the resignations? This has not gone unnoticed by the slobbering mainstream media; who would rather make this the story than actually doing the work, given them by the Constitution, of researching and reporting the truth!

I'm old enough to remember a free press that did the work and made a difference; and a House and Senate which did not roll over at every turn!

The 2002 speech Obama gave, in a time, when the majority of the people had blood in their mouths and nothing in their heads, has been posted at jefffarias.com. For those of us who have not read, or heard, it is worthwhile. For those who have it's worth our time to read it again; I have a copy and when I read it, the choice is clear. Who was right and stood up when it counted and who enabled this corrupt administration to assault with 'shock and awe', innocent people, with not one vote but two!?

The Iraqis had done nothing to us; except be born in a country rich with what Prime Minister Cheney and his sock-puppet Bush whated above all else. That is control the supply of oil, someday it may be water, which we all need. For now.

We must never forget that while the blood and shreds of our Constitution roils around our feet, who helped make all this carnage possible; and who took the unpopular stand against this Imperialist grab for world domination through the control of oil!

I'm rooting for Hillary, but I think both are great candidates. If either candidate wins the nomination, and the defeated candidate's supporters decide to either not vote or vote for the McCain or Nader, then I'll tell you the Democratic Party will have lost at least one voter for good. I'm sick of all this mudslinging. We're supposed to stand united in our goal of defeating the war-hungry Repugnicans, and all I see is that we're doing their work for them.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:46 PM on 03/08/2008

Sadly..it really doesn't matter. I don't think the democrats can win this one...it's Gene McCarthy and Hubert Humphrey all over again...but at least then the youth were a huge potential sea of votes but now...eh, their parents had less kids and so the kids are spoiled and screamin as ever but don't consititute the numbers that deserve the attention since it's not about their disposable income...we only have one vote and little Caitlin or Tanner doesn't get more because their parents sent 'em to a better day camp. The screecing catfight that more resembles a sorority house angst-fest is such a turn off that I'm having serious apprehensions about voting for either democrat myself.. I've characteristically supported open minded liberal candidates, as most americans typically will, but the atmoshphere has become so filled with drama and histionics that I actually have started to wonder if the Dems can beat the GOP in the election. Of course the empassioned youth will vote based on emotion, but the bulk of those who want to vote do not want to get under a tent where the accusations are flying and everyone feels bad.
By the way, I don't actually begrudge the candidates themselves. Hillary says she's better and a nest of hornets in the Obama camp scream for blood and accuse a political figure who just a year or two ago was one of their most prominent and effrective expressions of progressive thought of being worse than Bush. Her husband is being scorned and vilified as if he was being characterized by Rush Limbaugh, but he left office with a 70% approval rating...and we don't want that? Obama says he's better and so the win at all costs Clinton staffers use insider tricks and connections to plant stories that are sketchy at best but will smear a guy we all know is a hard working and caring fellow. I know its rhetoric but most of the voters won't care to take the time to see it that way. If we want to unite the country, would you vote for a candidate that hasn't fired the entire staff and gone to kelly girl or accutemp for an organization that at the very least will not alienate the entire country except for their close friends who evidently think a measure of cleverness is to come up with new and insulting insinuations while maintinging the thinest skin possible? Me neither.
An holy toledo? what's up with Larry David? Are we to have that much faith in a neurotic comedy writer. He's a great comedy writer and I love his humor but it's because he's a neurotic flyswatter that he's so good. His take on politics is meaningless and yet 2000+ comments all screaming for his blood or cursing his name. Why is he even given this much attention? Carumba!
There is still a long way until the convention but if this continues and the Dems become slaves to their own rules, I feel very badly as to their being able to salvage the credibility they need to persuade an evergrowing segment of the voting public that they should not simply take for granted in their desire to grab the extreme and single issue segments.

I HAVE A HUGE RESPECT FOR SAMANTHA POWER. SHE IS ONE OF THE MOST BRILLIANT INTELLECTUALS IN THE US. THIS WAS A TACTICAL ERROR FOR HER TO SAY THAT. SHE OBVIOUSLY DID NOT MEAN THAT CLINTON WAS A MONSTER BUT SHE MEANT THAT THE CLINTON CAMP HAS USED MONSTRUOUS TACTICS LIKE THE TALIBAN PHOTO RELEASE, THE QUESTIONS ABOUT HIS MUSLIM BACKGROUD THE TERROR 3AM AD, THE RACIST JESSIE JACKSON COMMENTS BY CLINTON ETC.. TYPICAL BUSH ASHCROFT FEAR TACTICS....
I JUST HOPE THAT ONCE OBAMA IS PRESIDENT SHE WILL BE ASKED TO BE SECRETARY OF STATE... AND WE MIGHT NEVER SEE AGAIN THE TYPE OF GENOCIDES WE HAVE SEEN UNDER
CLINTON AND BUSH IN RWANDA AND SUDAN ....

Have just been reading through some of the latest commentary and nothing is so amazing as the fact that for many here, Obama disciples, take Samantha Power's mistaken label of Hillary as something to criticize Hillary and Bill Clinton! They weren't dumb enough to make that remark. A highly intelligent woman who has been feeding Obama his foreign policy lines said Hillary was a monster. Okay, how in the world does that reflect on Hillary Clinton? Obama fired her, not Clinton, and it was probably the best that he could do under the circumstances. Think this is just another example of Obama's followers being unable to face the real world and unable to take any criticism of their messiah, from the press or from other campaigns.

"Samantha Power last week completed what might have been the most ill starred book tour since the invention of movable type. A Harvard professor and foreign policy writer who won a Pulitzer for her 2003 study of genocides, A Problem from Hell, Power is a card-carrying member of the Obamaphile elite--she plays basketball with George Clooney and claims that Sen. Obama sometimes text-messages her in the middle of the night. She arrived in the U.K. last week looking to promote her new book, Chasing the Flame: Sergio Vieira de Mello and the Fight to Save the World. (Vieira de Mello was the acclaimed top U.N. bureaucrat killed in the bombing of the U.N. headquarters in Baghdad in August 2003.)."

"On Monday, March 3, Power appeared on BBC radio and said that Obama, whom she had been advising, might be interested in doing some population relocation in Iraq. She said that such a course of action would be regrettable, but might be necessary, admitting that "moving potentially people from mixed neighborhoods to homogenous neighborhoods [is] tragic.‰‰.‰‰. It's the equivalent of facilitating ethnic cleansing, which is terrible."

If President Bush can do the old soft shoe, Hillary should treat us to the Monster Mash. I hear it's a graveyard smash, and these are grave times. As evidenced by his appearance on the Hillary Clinton Hour, hosted by DeGeneris, Barak can actually look good dancing.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 07:21 AM on 03/08/2008

This is an unfortunate incident, born out of Ms. Power's passion for Obama and frustration with the recent losses. No novice to journalistic protocol, she surely understood the power her words wield, given the potential for benefit or harm to his campaign. I'm not convinced that, in itself, the "monster" was a liability to Obama's campaign (or Clinton's)..however, with her past comments re: his campaign and Iraq..maybe? The fall-out and outcry by pundits and the Clinton camp was to be expected in this media circus of election campaigns, where injudicious comments/ actions are so much fodder for those who fan the flames of sensationalism. I hate this kind of petty political semantics that has a journalist in Scotland foaming at the mouth over her big coup, ethical or not. Bravo for her..such a stellar act of tabloid yellow journalism and great service to the campaign of Barack Obama, the U.S. and the world! Accolades to the Clinton campaign for taking the high road..being a supporter, it disappoints me that they used Ms. Power's lapse in composure to their advantage and I have voiced the same to them. THEIR lack of dignity and understanding was a lost opportunity for them to ameliorate the negativity ramping up on both sides in the heat of the campaign.

The person who truly took the high road on this is Samantha Power, who understood the perception of liability she may have become to Barack Obama. As I said in another post, if there is anything I understand about her, it is that she is a sincere and compassionate person. Her words come from a place of passion, both about Obama and her life's work. That passion is the epitome of what the world needs.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 05:36 PM on 03/10/2008

JoDeeVa, It would be great to take the high road here so the issues can really be looked at. I grow tired of the mud slinging in what, for me, is the first time I've become riveted by a presidential race. I think your Blog is trying to be helpful but only placing the fault back on the Clinton campaign. Give it a rest, Samantha Powers said herself she is a rookie in all this. Hopefully she will be called back when everyone calms down.

Samantha is not only one of the most gifted thinkers in the realm of international relations, she's a class act. IMHO, she's being crucified for simply telling the truth.

I would have called Hillary a "manipulative, egomaniacal opportunist"...

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:06 AM on 03/08/2008

This really brings to attention the double standard that people are viewing this campaign. Calling an older woman who has just as much right to fight hard and run for president a "monster" is over the top. You are treating Samantha as some kind of saint. I am sure she is gifted and will continue to contribute her talents. But the Obama campaign should not expect to be treated with kid gloves. On viewing her comments on You Tube you will hear her admit that she admires and even likes, very much, Clinton. She also says more importantly that "SHE IS A ROOKIE" as far as actually being IN politics.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:54 AM on 03/09/2008

Reading from the 1994 Republican play book should get you fired from your job if you work for a Democrat. It is one thing to point out perceived deficiencies in an opponent and another to demonize them. Which is what Powers did. And so did you. In fact a good part of the Obama supporters on Huff Po demonize Hillary day in and day out. The wide gulf between Obama's rhetoric and the orchestrated campaign talking points of his supporters here on Huff Po makes Obama a lying hypocrite which the Canadian memo already proved.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:26 PM on 03/08/2008

She is certainly a bully. Where is the demand from the Obama campaign that HIllary fire the creep who circulated the photo of Obama in the African costume in the hopes of inflaming both racial and religious prejudices? Where is the demand for the firing of the creepy little highly paid campaign guru who compared Obama to Kenneth Starr? The answer is simple....Obama does NOT go around demanding that people be fired.

HC's bullying is just another manifestation of her arrogance and her sense of entitlement to the presidency. All Obama did was have the affrontery to run against her and to be more articulate and charismatic, and she sends her loathsome supporters (and formerly decent people like Paul Krugman) out to slime Obama's supporters as being "haters" and "cultists." I have to say that I never hated her before, especially when I totally supported both Clintons through thick and thin, but I am coming to the place where I could legitimately be labeled a "hater." Why now, after my previous support for them? Two reasons: I pay attention and I have standards for decent behavior.

John McCain called Chelsea "ugly" and said that Janet Reno is her father (I guess he was calling Hillary a lesbian and Janet Reno an UGLY lesbian), and Hlllary still claims that they are pals. It is only the little people that she tries to get fired.

One more thing....Obama could send his supporters out to spread the ugly rumor that has already been repeated spread by supermarket tabloids. The Republicans are certain to use this against her--they already are. Obama has tried to keep an element of decency in this campaign. Hillary is so self-involved and touchy that she sees even legitimate criticism as some form of vicious attack. And her supporters keep saying that playing dirty is the only way a woman can beat a man.

Haven't the Clintons done enough to wreck the Democratic party by behaving so badly that--because of previous bad behavior-- they couldn't even convincingly support the two men who ought to have followed them into the White House?

I heard BBC interview with Samantha Powers this morning (3/8/08). She opposed
negotiating with HAMAS "because they don't recognize Israel". It was as though
her views was scripted out of the US/Israeli position. She did not mention
that the US/Israel do noti recognize a sovereign Palestine with the rights
to select itsgovernment, to follow their judiciary, to decide who can
live there, how taxes (to Palestine) are to be paid, who can and cannot
construct anything at all, how water is to be distributed, what work rules
can be set. Palestine should also have the right to defend itself both
on the ground and by air to protect its citizens. Other nations do.
The US/srael wants Palestine to renounce violence but
the US/Israel is not renouncing violence at all. The US/Israel wants
Palestine to follow international rules but the US/Israel are not
at all bounded by such rules.Boundaries should be those at pre-1967
boundaries. No one may cross without permission of the sovereign
state. No roads can be built. No territories annexed at the will
of the US/Israel. Samanthawers has not acknowledged the
tortures, massacres by the US/Isreal and the funding of
"settlers" who should be permitted to do any construction
they like within the State of Israel, not in an adjoining sovereign
state.

In sum, Samantha Powers is only analyzing from one side
alone. That is hardly worlthy of admiration. It is,however,
politically "safe". It is more important for Samantha Powers
not to lose the "Jewish vote" than to examine all the intricacies
of complex issues or to face the human rights of the
Palestinian people. That, I suppose, would be uncomfortable.
Ms. Powers did not seem willing to discuss it beyond
echoing what Barack Obama believes.

After watching Ms. Powers interview, I am sad. Senator Clinton, your campaign, husband and you are vicious, indecent and a disgrace to this great nation. I feel so naive, to have supported you and your husband during the impeachment proceedings. I now understand the meaning of the "politics of personnel destruction". I understand how travel gate was not a rightwing propaganda creation. I see calculated effort by you and your husband to destroy and attack the women who claim ( I am now convinced they are telling the truths) were harassed by your husband. Your Clinton machine puts Karl Rove and republican machine to shame. I can see why the media shivers when attacked by you. Why the democratic establishment is silent, in face of your politics of personnel ambition at the cost of taking down the party. Super delegates sit in silence and pray to God that the people will have the sense to save them the pain of voting for you in spite of their best judgment. Everyone is scared to be attacked, put down and publically humiliated. Rush Limbaugh and all the right wing media likes you, for you are their sister and Bill their brother, and they are their brother"s keeper. You are all made from the same mold.
I have supported Senator Obama but intended to vote for you if you were the nominee. I no longer can do that. The country would be better served, if Senator McCain becomes the next president. He is a descent man and this country deserves a descent president for a change.
Ms Powers, your interview shows us what a decent person is like, and I wish there was justice in this world. That a decent human being like you has become a victim of the politics of personnel destruction is a sad day indeed.

A vote for john mccain is a vote for the total destruction of this country. We are already "in negotiations" for a "long-term commitment" in Iraq. bushit means to exact revenge for the this country's moral decisions to hold his corrupt, evil family to account and the stripping of his grandfather's assets after prescott bush was convicted of selling materials and information to Hitler during WWII. mccain began by being the"straight-talk express" and then admitted himself that the repukes had come to Washington to change Washington (D.C.) and Washington had changed them. How true, if it is possible to become even dirtier than they already were. Get your head out of your butt, and vote for a DEMOCRAT! It's the only hope the U.S. has and it may be already too late.

This is what happens when the campaign decides to go negative. But she just might have the last laugh, for while she has been banished from Barack Obama's campaign witin a years time she will probably end up as a commentator on some liberal network.
