I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Power

In early 2005, Samantha Power was working on a follow up to her Pulitzer Prize winning book ""A Problem from Hell: America and the Age of Genocide," when she got a call from the office of Sen. Barack Obama.

She had never heard of the freshman Democrat who had taken office just months earlier. So Power researched him, downloading the famous address Obama gave to the Democratic convention the summer prior. The two met shortly after -- it was only supposed to last an hour but they ended up talking for four.

"Why don't I quit my job at Harvard and come and intern in your office and answer the phones or do whatever you want?' It was literally that spontaneous," she recalled saying. To which, the senator responded: "Great."

And so it was that Obama scored what was hailed as a staffing coup only months into his time in Washington. Power, who was working at the time for Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government, was widely considered to be one of the most forward-thinking, gifted foreign policy minds of her generation. In 2004, she was named by Time Magazine as one of the 100 top thinkers of the year.

That Obama could bring her on board -- he was, Power said, the first government official to have ever called her -- was emblematic of the different style of politics that the Illinois senator was promising to represent. Far from a down-the-line liberal on international affairs, Power was known for her innovative (if not self-reflectively painful) analysis. On the Rwanda genocide, she concluded that U.S. officials had worked to ignore the problem, not failed to address it. On the Israeli-Palestinian crisis, she once advocated (though later recanted) spending billions of dollars and sending a military force to help create a Palestinian state next to Israel.

The relationship ended on Friday after Power resigned from Obama's presidential campaign. Her comments, made to the Scottsman, that Sen. Hillary Clinton was a "monster" devoted to political opportunism, were responsible for her departure.

"With deep regret, I am resigning from my role as an advisor the Obama campaign effective today," Power wrote. "Last Monday, I made inexcusable remarks that are at marked variance from my oft-stated admiration for Senator Clinton and from the spirit, tenor, and purpose of the Obama campaign. And I extend my deepest apologies to Senator Clinton, Senator Obama, and the remarkable team I have worked with over these long 14 months."

Power's fall from campaign grace was as abrupt as it was newsworthy. Only an hour before her resignation was made public, surrogates to Clinton convened a conference call demanding her firing. An hour later, Terry McAuliffe, a chief Clinton aide, sent out an email using Power's remarks to help solicit campaign donations.

Story continues below

And yet, while there is an acknowledgment that Power likely had to resign because of what she said, there is also a deep regret that the Democratic Party, for the time being, is losing one of its brightest thinkers. Indeed, even as she worked for Obama's senate office, Power found the time to write another book: "Chasing the Flame: Sergio Vieira de Mello and the Fight to Save the World." Her friend and political rival, Richard Holbrooke, proclaimed Obama "very fortunate to have her."

"Samantha is one of the most creative and dynamic thinkers on the political horizon," said John Prendergast, co-chair of The ENOUGH Project, an initiative to end genocide and crimes against humanity. "She is driven by deep compassion and conviction, something our foreign policy establishment badly needs at this moment in history. Removing her voice from deliberations over monumental security challenges is unfortunate, and hopefully only temporary."

There have been similar instances in which presidential campaign aides have taken the ax for their actions or remarks. In 1988, John Sasso, who was serving as Michael Dukakis' chief of staff, resigned from the campaign after it was revealed that he had leaked documents showing that Sen. Joseph Biden, a presidential candidate at the time, had plagiarized portions of his speech. That same election another Dukakis aide, Donna Brazile, was fired after she urged reporters to investigate then-Vice President George Bush's alleged marital infidelity. This election cycle, former Sen. John Edwards was released two bloggers after they were criticized for anti-religious postings.

But Power's resignation, political observers say, may have been the product of a prolonged and increasingly heated campaign season -- one that has been based, in large part, on denouncing negative campaigning -- as mush as her own words.

Indeed, when Billy Shaeheen, a surrogate to Clinton hinted at Obama's past drug use, he too was let go by the campaign.

"The whole Democratic race has ratcheted up in intensity. It is just incredibly meaningful right now," said Stu Rothenberg, editor of The Rothenberg Political Report. "And so there is a tendency for people to kind of snap or say things that are more caustic and negative than they would. There is also a fatigue factor; this has been a long race. Staff has as much invested, maybe more, than the candidate, it sometimes seems... This is not breaking the law to call your opponent a monster. That's just politics."

Obama has to get a quick grip on his campaign - first Nafta-gate and the loose lips of an Economics advisor talking to those damn Canadians, now the foreign policy flap. He has to be more clear on his positions to his own team, and how he sees those positions panning out, so these idiot academic advisors don't just make stuff up Next it'll be another idiot mouthing off about Rezko. Personally, if Obama makes it through the hurdles, he should first cut off trade - or get even some other way - with Canada and Scotland.

Obama got 98 delegates in Texas, Clinton got 95.

Seems to me that Obama won.

Yes. If Hillary wasn't a monster, Power couldn't have pointed it out.

Too bad she left before telling us what monster she had in mind. My guess is Cruella.

She called her a monster, big deal. You should hear some of the things Australian Politicians and staffers call each other.

Hopefully only temporary.
I hope it won't be long before she can return to the Obama campaign. At the very latest, the day after he is declared the Democratic party nominee.

I second that. She is such a lovely person and equally compassionate, intelligent, brilliant, a prolific writer........and so much more. Most importantly, I will feel safe knowing that she is helping Obama make the major decisions on foreign policy.

Let's hope it's temporary.

I think this will help Obama more. It actually works out quite well. Because to me, the fact that it was said in private means that this person actually believes it. I honestly don't know what I would think if someone said with complete sincerity, without any ulterior motives to sway public opinion, that Obama was a "monster" who would do "anything to win." I forget the exact quote, but do you get what I mean? While it's awful such a smart woman (Ms. Power) had to fall on the sword, it will definitely plant the seed in people's minds now--what causes someone to think/say these things about Clinton? In a weird roundabout way, it's a good way to open up that conversation.

Unfortunately it wasn't in private- it was made on record. But it not new or shocking and seems fairly mild, considering the other things that are going around ! Obama took the high road. If he wins I guess he can hire her again , sounds like she got a little overheated.

I'll probabl;y get jumped on about this, but I'm wondering if this was a scam to get Obama a jump in the ratings. Remember Bush saying he would get rid of anyone in his administation who was a crook? His ratings went up, not for long, but they went up. Obama's ratings are now up. He got rid of someone who was trying to smear the other candidate. I might be wrong, but this could have all been planned to outdo Hillary. She can smear all she wants. Obama will run a clean campaign. Rove is still doing things for Bush.

His ratings are up because he is getting the media to dig into the idea of Hillary's experience. At the same time Hillary is doing these insane attacks a FEMALE on the Obama team paints a picture of Hillary as a 'monster', creep, or deranged fool and Hillary's mouth only adds to this.

Either way, Ms. Power saying this adds to the theme Hillary is a head case bent on ambition at all cost. Obama sits back and watches Hillary go up in flames in her eagerness to attack. Ms. Power will link back up when the smoke clears from Hillary's self-immolation. Accidental genius? But still genius.

It was tragic today for the Obama campaign today regarding Samantha Powers speaking to a foreign press regarding the Obama campaign and representing Barack Obama as his lead foreign policy adviser. It has gone against his philosophy and the way he states he will run his campaign. How much has she told the foreign governments? I too, wonder how many other advisers he has that would jeopardize our security as a nation? I am so glad she resigned as this would indeed jeopardise our security overseas and how the world sees us as Americans. Our nation is strong and we need to keep it as a leading power in the world and the only way we can do that is with a President like Hillary Clinton. Super delegates need I say more? The statement made as to a knife fight was uncalled for by Barack Obama and should also be retracted. Inexperience in running a campaign is no excuse. With running a country we cannot take chances, and running a country as a true leader will only can be done with Hillary Clinton as President. Americans now more than ever, realize who the next President of these Unites States will be. Pennsylvania will show finally who America wants as President not only to protect our nations' security overseas but here in our own country.

Hillary Clinton has made our country LESS safe by voting for an unnecessary, unjustified and extremely costly war. Al Qeada would not have been in Iraq if Bush hadn't invaded, and Hillary allowed him to invade. And now our military is stretched to the breaking point. What experience does Hillary have in foreign affairs? She didn't negoatiate peace in Northern Ireland likes she claims. She didn't open the Bosnian border either, it was opened the day before she arrived.

We could be screening every cargo shipment that enters the US, providing every police force with more personnel and better equipment, and better arming our military with the money that has been spent in Iraq.

PS. I don't think Samantha Power told the Scottish parliament any of our national secrets.

Catherine, what in hell does an honest personal comment made by a campaign worker/consultant have to do with national security? "Told foreign governments"? Jeopardizing our security? Are you NUTS? Let me enlighten you about "jeopardizing our national security". This current jackass has so destroyed ANY world standing the United states USED to enjoy that we are hovering on the abyss of being declared a rogue nation by the civilized world (of which we are NOT part) and the countries we THINK are our "allies" will turn to Russia for help in containing us. While we slumber on in our own stupidity, Russian submarines will be brought to our shores under the protective cover of the naval power of a number of "friendly" nations and a surgically neat delivery of about a dozen nuclear warheads to all major cities on each coast will bring this country so far down that being on its knees will look like a miraculous position. Couldn't happen? Bull. Putin doesn't have the smarts or the power? Bullshit. Can happen. bushit succeeds in starting another mess with Iran or idiot mccain gets in with his moronic "Bomb, bomb.bomb, Bomb, bomb Iran." Likely to.

More proof of thar here:
Power on Obama's Iraq plan: "best case scenario"
For all the chatter about Obama adviser Samantha Power's calling Clinton a "monster," another set of remarks made on her book tour in the United Kingdom may be equally threatening to the Obama campaign: Comments in a BBC interview that express a lack of confidence that Obama will be able to carry through his plan to withdraw troops from Iraq within 16 months.
"He will, of course, not rely on some plan that he’s crafted as a presidential candidate or a U.S. Senator," she said at one point in the interview.
Power downplayed Obama's commitment to quick withdrawal from Iraq on Hard Talk, a program that often exceeds any of the U.S. talk shows in the rigor of its grillings. She was challenged on Obama's Iraq plan, as it appears on his website, which says that Obama "will remove one to two combat brigades each month, and have all of our combat brigades out of Iraq within 16 months."

"What he’s actually said, after meting with the generals and meeting with intelligence professionals, is that you – at best case scenario – will be able to withdraw one to two combat brigades each month. That’s what they’re telling him. He will revisit it when he becomes president," Power says.

The host, Stephen Sackur, challenged her:"So what the American public thinks is a commitment to get combat forces out in 16 months isn't a commitment isn't it?"

I can't agree with this post. Obama has said that we have to begin the process of
withdrawal, and be as careful getting out, as careless as we were in going in.

I can't believe Ms. Powers comments are being spun as a negative. Basically what she says is that unlike over 90% of congress, Obama will read the NIE and other available data to ensure he as all available facts before "tweaking" his plan. Remember, neither of these candidates currently has the clearance to ALL the intelligence at this point (heck, Hillary and McCain wouldn't read it anyhow).

For those rallyign around Hillary, remember in the last debate when challenged on the 500,000 jobs she promised New Yorkers??? Her response was that she expected Al gore to win the election. Situations change and if she is naive enough to believe her exit plan won't change once in office then I am with Obama--she lacks insight and judgment to lead the country.

It's not mean or Mud slinging if it's true - she is showing herself to be a bit of a monstrosity, and she is an Opportunist. consider she stayed with Bill even though he humilited, deceived and disrespected her . When she takes the Senate Seat she starts acting and voting like aRepublican. Now her Campaign tactics can leave no room for doubt.
this woman is the updated version of W.- worse is that she may be smart , arrogant and greedy enough to actually keep up with the stratedgy.
although she seems to be making missteps as often as W. - May be you corps should lower their Dose- or at least maintain it better.

Obama should stand up on Monday and announce he's reinstating her. Call the Hilary bluff. It'll show he's
as able to play hardball when necessary, as the Clintons do on a regular basis. And hey, gonna be a tough commander-in-chief. Can't stand up to Hilary, how you gonna stand up to you know who.......

okay what Hillary is doing is bitchy. I don't care how you slice the pie up, she is the nasty one and Obama has tried to stay above her fray. But there is tons of baggage in the Clinton camp so he can just start picking away at it. The sad thing is for our party , she wants this so bad that she will take the republicans votes, they did that all across the state of TX. She thinks she won the hearts of TX , sorry no she got the 8 or 9% of republicans who voted for Hillary because they want HER to be the democrat candidate because they think she can be beat. They followed the advise of some nut right wing conservative and went like sheep to the polls. Why would they vote for Clinton, lets see, Because she has so much wrong with her, where does he start. She is old politics like McCain and if this country does not vote them out we are more stupid then we were last presidential election. We get what we vote for. Ohio and Texas were stupid , they fell for her lies and now we continue on to PA , hopefully they will have the intelligence to end it once and for all. I am ashamed of Texas for falling for such stupid Clinton tactics not to mention the right wing bullshit. Everyone should be calling the DNC and complaining that Clinton wants a do over in FL and Michigan. They knew the rules and they broke them, there are consequences to actions. Isn't that what we teach our children?
Obama is the right person to clean up the mess in Washington.

Hey guys,

How about a defense fund for poor Ms. Powers so she won't suffer as a result of her putative slur? We all know the truth about old Hillary, anyway. I mean, Samantha just spoke the truth, right?!

Keep telling yourselves that - then you can invite Samantha Powers over for drinks and dinner while the rest of the country marks the inauguration of the first woman president in January of 09. Any defense of Ms. Powers is truly disgraceful. She does not deserve pity or understanding. She was wrong to say what she said. No doubt, Obama knows this and his quick judgment is a credit to him. I don't impugn Obama for every mis-deed that his staff carries out. He's a decent person, and so is Hillary Clinton. She does not deserve such outrageous and misplaced contempt. Get a grip or go home!

Remember that before Senator Barack Obama appeared on the scene there was a Senator Hillary Clinton who in public life was viewed by many negatively or not. Supporting Senator Barack Obama is unrelated to not supporting Senator Hillary Clinton. It does appear that as far as this presidential race there are personality implications attached to a supporter of one or another. That does not make any sense. If we pick two other public personalities and attempt to attribute a whole range of characteristics that must be shared by those who are favorable to one or another it would be regarded as absurd. Why does this not apply here as well? Having said that did I read in one comment "a decent person" referring to Senator Hillary Clinton? Or "running the country as a true leader" as a positive sentiment about Senator Clinton. President George W. Bush sure did run the country as a true leader. He has led us to the brink of disaster. See I did not need to say anything in praise of Senator Barack Obama. My opinions of Senator Hillary Clinton can be supported by past events. Oh yeah, by the way, Senator Barack Obama for President 2008!
