Angry Boeing Supporters In Congress Targeting McCain

WASHINGTON — Angry Boeing supporters are vowing revenge against Republican presidential candidate John McCain over Chicago-based Boeing's loss of a $35 billion Air Force tanker contract to the parent company of European plane maker Airbus.

There are other targets for their ire _ the Air Force, the defense secretary and even the entire Bush administration.

But Boeing supporters in Congress are directing their wrath at McCain, the Arizona senator and nominee in waiting, for scuttling an earlier deal that would have let Boeing build the next generation of Air Force refueling tankers. Boeing now will miss out on a deal that it says would have supported 44,000 new and existing jobs at the company and suppliers in 40 states.

"I hope the voters of this state remember what John McCain has done to them and their jobs," said Rep. Norm Dicks, D-Wash., whose state would have been home to the tanker program and gained about 9,000 jobs.

"Having made sure that Iraq gets new schools, roads, bridges and dams that we deny America, now we are making sure that France gets the jobs that Americans used to have," said Rep. Rahm Emanuel, D-Ill. "We are sending the jobs overseas, all because John McCain demanded it."

The European Aeronautic Defence and Space Co. and its U.S. partner, Los Angeles-based Northrop Grumman, won a competition with Boeing Feb. 29 to build the refueling planes in one of the biggest Pentagon contracts in decades. The unexpected decision has sparked outrage from union halls to the halls of Congress over the impact on U.S. jobs, prestige and national security. EADS and Northrop say about 60 percent of their tanker will be built in the U.S.

McCain said he is keeping an open mind on the contract, but in the past he has boasted about his role in blocking an earlier version of the tanker deal that gave the contract to Boeing. The deal was killed in 2004 after a former Boeing executive improperly recruited an Air Force official while she was still overseeing contracts involving prospective Boeing deals. The former Air Force official, Darleen Druyun, and a top Boeing executive both served time in prison, and the scandal led to the departure of Boeing's chief executive and several top Air Force officials.

McCain has run ads touting his role in fighting "pork" such as the tanker project and cited the deal in a recent GOP debate.

"I saved the taxpayers $6 billion in a bogus tanker deal," he said.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., echoing the thoughts of many congressional Democrats, sees McCain's role in a less positive light. She said the earlier tanker deal was "on course for Boeing" before McCain started railing against it.

"I mean, the thought was that it would be a domestic supplier for it," Pelosi told reporters. "Senator McCain intervened, and now we have a situation where the contract may be _ this work may be outsourced."

Even Boeing's Republican supporters are critical of McCain.

"John McCain will be the nominee and I will support him, but if John McCain believes that Airbus or EADS is the company for our Air Force tanker program he's flat-out wrong _ and I'll tell him that to his face," said Rep. Dave Reichert, R-Wash.

Rep. Todd Tiahrt, a Kansas Republican whose district includes a Boeing plant that could have gained hundreds of new jobs from the tanker program, said McCain's role in killing the earlier deal is likely to become an election issue. Both of the leading Democratic candidates for president, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, have criticized the Air Force decision.

"I think we absolutely will hear more about it," Tiahrt said. "We'll hear it mostly from the Democrats and they have every right to be concerned."

McCain called such criticism off base.

"In all due respect to the Washington delegation, they vigorously defended the process before _ which turned out to be corrupt _ which would have cost the taxpayers more than $6 billion and ended up with people in federal prison," he said. "I'm the one that fought against that ... for years and brought down a corrupt contract."

Keith Ashdown, with the watchdog group Taxpayers for Common Sense, said Boeing executives who broke the law were to blame for the demise of the tanker contract _ not McCain.

"This was theirs from day one," he said. "This idea that any lawmaker is to blame is a joke."

Still, Todd Donovan, a political science professor at Western Washington University, said McCain's opposition to Boeing could hurt him with voters in Washington and other states affected by the tanker program. Boeing would have performed much of the work in Everett, Wash., and Wichita, Kan., and used Pratt & Whitney engines built in Connecticut. Significant work also was slated for Texas.

"If he can be painted as somehow being associated with job losses ... it could hurt him on the margins," Donovan said.

McCain's role in the tanker deal did not bother Alabama politicians, including Republican Gov. Bob Riley, who endorsed McCain three days after the Air Force contract was announced. The EADS-Northrop tanker, based on the Airbus A330, will be built in Mobile, Ala., where it will produce 2,000 new jobs, and support 25,000 jobs at suppliers nationwide.

40 billion would pay for about 3 months of the Iraqi holocaust.

Of course he also thinks he had nothing to do with the Keating 5 from Arizona that cost people millions. If he is elected it will be the same old Bush crap only worse.

Just to think that here we are hoping that the people in charge of the military and the congress would be working toward national security have just tossed a huge contract to yet another coutry for vital planes for refueling the jets who are at war or are doing their duties elsewhere and to protect us is one huge scare but....the amount of money we don't have and will have to borrow will be going to some country not ours to pay for these planes from another country. Then we look at how many jobs are being lost and as a result the recession deepens and then they go and ship all of the jobs to build and support these planes is also going to another country. Makes me wonder who the military/pentagon/administration/congress is working for? It is not us.

What is telling is that they are trying to put lipstick on this by saying 2000 jobs will be created in Alabama and another potential country wide of 25000. Compared to the boeing deal that was 9000 news jobs in Washington with a potential for 44000 country wide. Seems to me McCain has screwed us again and he isn' t even president yet, imagine the damage he could do in the whitehouse.

That ought to finish McCain off, more than any other thing he has done. The people are very against sending jobs overseas, for whatever reason, and this present airplane business is a no-excuse failure.

I live primarily on a Boeing pension, and my hsuband worked there all of his employed life. Seattle lived and breathed Boeing, but received quite a morale blow when that now-deposed executive moved the company headquarters to Chicago. But it's true that Boeing is not only in Seattle, it's in 40 states.
It's a loss to 40 states.

Tragically, the other candidates seem to be in favor of this kind of "free trade". I'm not sure how bad Obama is on this issue, but Hillary is not good here. As Lou Dobbs said, none of the candidates excell in this matter of sending our work overseas. Except, I did write Dobbs, for Huckabee. In this area he would have done better; at least firmly promised to do better; it was a pillar of his campaign. But not enough people noticed.

Too bad for the ship of state!

Hoping McCain sinks even before the nominating convention. There's still Huck...

I can't believe I am going to say this but...could it be that John McCain is putting the best interests of the people who will use the tankers above the interests of the company seeking the contract? I need to know more. The corruption conviction does not inspire confidence in Boeing. And the idea that taxpayers might be overcharged for these tankers is also concerning. Since we all know John McCain is a warmonger, he is either taking kickbacks from Airbus or he has a legitimate reason for thwarting Boeing. I need to know more.

If Boeing was so concerned about these jobs, they would have offered the better deal. I would love to see this contract awarded to an American company, but that contract needs to be awarded to the company that has the best deal for taxpayer dollars. Boeing could have had this contract; that is the real problem.

Good Thanks for saving me money

So Nancy pelocy is upset we did not get screwed by Boeing

Let's look at political donations from Boeing

Northrop Gunman is the lead contractor. The plant will be in Alabama

BTW Hillary Clinton was a major force in awarding an English firm the contract to build our Marine helicopters. These are actually combat units

If the USA were a European Government then they would take into consideration the jobs created and not the other aspects of the deal. If McCain was behind this situation then he must be on the payroll of EAD.

This is a very emotional issue because it's all about buying America and keeping jobs here regardless of how good the product is compared to others. I think Boeing is somewhat covering themselves with the American flag and not producing a competitive product. Boeing is taking a page out of the US auto industry play book with this simple logic- buy American because.

Again how can we deny there is an concerted effort to undermine the US economy.
Have work for American's and you give the contract to a foreign country? Being a MI'er I've asked that question repeatedly- we have the infrastructure and the (unemployed) work force to at least be amnufactuing more bullets for our soldiers! Nothing MI is circling the Drain -again- Deja Vu all over again- seems like '78 here in MI.
Damn we really need to CLEAN HOUSE! Recalls, vote out, impeach Investigate , prosecute and sentence- Years of Great Reality TV in Store for US- if theirs a Media Outlet who'' be around to televise it. Hell I'd travel to see many of those trials- even if I have to Ride My Horse all the way. Priceless!

$40 billion is a signifigant amount of money. A way should have been found to spend the money in this country, even if the plans for the Boeing tanker had to be redrawn. We need a strong military and jobs. We can't have either if we don't have both.
