***UPDATED 3/11***

King said Monday that Obama would be viewed as a "savior" for terrorists:

An Iowa Republican congressman on Monday defended his prediction that terrorists would celebrate if Democrat Barack Obama were elected president, despite a rebuke from aides to John McCain, the GOP's apparent presidential nominee.

"(Obama will) certainly be viewed as a savior for them," Rep. Steve King told The Associated Press. "That's why you will see them supporting him, encouraging him."

EARLIER: King refused to back down from his comments in an interview with Fox News Channel host Geraldo Rivera:

"I reject [McCain's] disavowal and I reject the Democrat web pages that call me the names that they have," King said. "I'd ask them to point to the quote that I have said that offends them. And if I am wrong, Geraldo, and we elect Obama to the presidency and he declares defeat, if they don't dance in the streets, I will come and apologize to you and everybody in America. But I'm saying, I'm right."

ORIGINAL REPORT: From the AP:

An Iowa Republican congressman said Friday that terrorists would be "dancing in the streets" if Democratic candidate Barack Obama were to win the presidency.

Rep. Steve King based his prediction on Obama's pledge to pull troops out of Iraq, his Kenyan heritage and his middle name, Hussein.

"The radical Islamists, the al-Qaida ... would be dancing in the streets in greater numbers than they did on Sept. 11 because they would declare victory in this war on terror," King said in an interview with the Daily Reporter in Spencer.

King said his comments were not meant to demean Obama but to warn how an Obama presidency would look to the world.

"His middle name does matter," King said. "It matters because they read a meaning into that."

More Of King's Comments from the Spencer Daily Reporter:

"There are implications that have to do with who he is and the position that he's taken. If he were strong on national defense and said 'I'm going to go over there and we're going to fight and we're going to win, we'll come home with a victory,' that's different. But that's not what he said. They will be dancing in the streets if he's elected president. That has a chilling aspect on how difficult it will be to ever win this Global War on Terror."

Past Statements By King:

***In a statement issued by his Congressional office following the release of photos depicting prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib, King referred to the maltreatment of prisoners at the infamous Baghdad prison as "what amounts to hazing."

***In June 2006, on the floor of the House of Representatives, King said that his family would be safer in Iraq than Washington D.C.:

Well I by now have a feel for the rhythm of this place called Washington, D.C., and my wife lives here with me, and I can tell you, Mr. Speaker, she's at far greater risk being a civilian in Washington, D.C. than an average civilian in Iraq.

***After the death of terrorist leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, King said:

"There probably are not 72 virgins in the hell he's at," King said about al-Zarqawi, in a recording transcribed by Radio Iowa. "And if there are, they probably all look like Helen Thomas."

***King has called former Sen. Joseph McCarthy, "a great American hero."

***King said immigrants trying to cross the border from Mexico should be treated like livestock:

I also say we need to do a few other things on top of that wall, and one of them being to put a little bit of wire on top here to provide a disincentive for people to climb over the top or put a ladder there. We could also electrify this wire with the kind of current that would not kill somebody, but it would simply be a discouragement for them to be fooling around with it. We do that with livestock all the time.

This was merely a response to the practical realities of shifting political fortune. There was a War grabbing the lion's share of the headlines. The tide has turned once more with the emphasis now on the Economy. The Electorate is blithely pragmatic if nothing else. The rascist screeds of hired 'pitchmen' are as a diversion. Collectively we are aware that blind hate and racism is a Cancer. Yet many will vote their 'pocketbook', feast on lurid tabloid headlines before taking to the mental heavy lifting required to squelch Iniquity. I would posit that this is in our nature as human beings.

Stop excusing this behavior, I see you are a decent person, but when people like you in essence support this tactic by arguing some kind of merit decency loses. Fight back don't excuse it is a waste of your intellect. He is saying the terrorists win, this is BS and assumes the majority of people in Iraq who want the US out are evil. Come on this is bigoted no matter how you slice it.

congressman King could well be an Al-Qaidha operative. It is well known that Osama prefers an incompetent leader such as Bush. McCain's support of Bush seems to continue that string of "experienced incompetency" Only a supporter of Osama would want that. Therefore King must to an Al-Qaidha agent.

So this is an example of the people supporting John McCain, how fitting. John Mccain was a second rate pilot , his actions on board his carrier caused the deaths of many of the flight crew that day when he released his ordinance while parked on deck. John McCain was a party boy son of an Admiral who had his action covered up by his father. Too bad he could not cover the fact that his son was a hot shot who took one too many chances which resulted in his being shot down over Vietnam. Yes, he deserves credit for his suffering, but his actions caused the suffering of many family members of those lost on the deck of the carrier.

I served on USS Forrestal ...McCain didnt drop his ordnance his plane was hit by a stray missile from across the deck ..most likely a stray voltage AKA static. triggered its launch. Go watch the flight deck video its out there and is used for damage control training across the Navy.

McCain is still useless to me but if you are going to slam him slam him properly. He definitely was about as unlucky a Naval aviator as there could be

The Repubs had a meeting and asked if someone was willing to try this line of attack. They wanted to see if America would tolerate and respond to it.

Unfortunately, Americans will. Remember, if you say it enough people will start believing it.

It starts with King, then someone puts it in an email, the ignorant will read it and begin to spread it to their friends, and the "easily swayed" or dummies will believe it and vote for the "trusted, white, know he's for America" candidate.

What ever happened to America: Land of the Free, Home of the Brave? Where did that America go?

I'm embarrassed to know people who are in dire economic straits that vote Repub every election because they are scared. They continually miss the bigger picture, the reason why gas is 3.15 a gallon when eight years ago it was less than $.99. That their fear is driving milk to 4.00 a gallon and they may lose their jobs while the current administration is hacking away at the constitution.

I can only hope for better, but the "easily swayed" will vote with their fear over their brains every time.

Yeah, it's sad there are some people in the Midwest who live in fear of a terrorist attack. As if Al Qaeda is really plotting to dirty bomb Des Moines.

This kind of stuff happens in every election cycle. In '04, a female co-worker of mine told me that she couldn't vote for Kerry because she had heard that "if he's elected, they're going to give birth control to grade-school girls." I first asked her where she got that information and she said she had first heard it at church, then there was a discussion about it at the PTO meeting. When I asked her if she believed it, she said "well- these people have no reason to lie about it."
Indeed....

Less than $.99? In what country? Not in the US. When Bush came in the average price was about $1.70 per gallon, give or take.

But your point is made.

'Iowa' is not alone. Iowans are not the disease. There is a tide who'd support King and that which he'd have to say. Reconcile this reality and report back. I'd suggest it would start in the Neighborhoods and Workplaces and dare I say, the Home.

The man is correct. Terrorists WILL be dancing in the streets when the US leaves Iraq. The REAL observation should be.....who cares what they do? Do we decide foreign policy based on THEIR desires?

Really, have you been talking to al-Qaida too, I suggest you get ready for a visit from homeland security. Guess you agree with him on Abu Ghraib as well. It's no wonder this country is so screwed up with people like you supporting this BS. Come on get a grip and stop your nonsense.

And yet for all of the righteous indignation displayed here, he would still seem to speak for a sizable portion of the electorate who'd otherwise have no venue for their views.

True. But your opinion may be the balance, or in the minority. True rascists insinuate or whisper. The pervasiveness of it is difficult to gauge. For everyone here who'd loudly proclaim the patent ignorance of the man, how many in shadowy form would silently applaud?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:06 AM on 03/11/2008

It is not their views so much as their hatred and fear that finds a path and a grounding through some vile projection onto a person or group. There is a choice to remain separated and disconnected from actually knowing what they judge, because the act of judging is the goal.

You may be right. i will go polling. I would find it hard to believe that people don't see Iraq as a recruiting advetisement? In asymetric warfare John Mc is the guy you want, he just keeps going and going and going-which is exactly what the radicals who want this to keep going want. I have to go polling...I'm afraid of what I"m going to find.

So when the great state of Iowa elects such an outstanding representative as this guy... please tell me why we honor them by kissing their ass and upholding their "first in the nation caucus" status every four years. Seriously. Please tell me.

They will be dancing in the streets when Obama becomes President, because Bush and his terrorist regime will be leaving office. The destroyers and occupiers of their Country will be leaving. Lets take this one step further, all Americans will be dancing and celebrating in the streets when Obama becomes President. I have a Countdown calender for Bush leaving office on my desk, today is number 315.

I was watching some clips of the Movie "No End in Sight" yesterday on Linktv, and this War was a quagmire before we even arrived. If anything, it makes us look like the most pathetic, incompetent, Country in the World.

I guess we've got a preview of the Republican strategy—or one of them—against Obama. I'm sure King is being floated out there as a trial balloon to see if this kind of tactic has any traction. Unfortunately for the Republicans, the Spitzer scandal is taking all the air of the news cycle right now. But Fox will keep having this guy on until they make a decision whether to this will backfire or not. They tried the same think with Kerry. Tried it again in 2006. Same old play book.
