I'm an avid reader, so chances are I would have gotten around to Barack Obama's Dreams From My Father sooner or later. I confess that I read it sooner out of curiosity about his reported admissions of drug usage. Yes, there is such a discussion. But it accounts for only two pages in the 442-page tome; the remaining 440 pages were something entirely different and, dare I say, uniquely American.

It's an amazing story and, regardless of the electoral ending, a uniquely American one. This country has always valued rags-to-riches tales, and Obama's family history is nothing less. I suspect that if the story began in Poland, or Germany or the Ukraine, it would be trumpeted as an American classic, not made a subject for urban legend.

The book is the story of Obama's search for identity. Some milestones in that journey have been reported elsewhere, including his birth in Hawaii in 1961; time in Indonesia; return to Hawaii and attendance at a prestigious prep school; college education; and work as a community organizer in Chicago before attending law school at Harvard, where he was the first African American president of the Law Review.

From that perch, he was offered his first book deal. The resulting memoir, written when Obama was 33, was first published in 1995. He was elected to the Illinois state Senate the following year. Almost a decade thereafter, he added a new preface acknowledging that "certain passages have proved to be inconvenient politically, the grist for pundit commentary and opposition research."

Unique story? I don"t think so. The story that is being pesented for public consumption has too many holes in it. In my opinion- "Actions Speak Louder Than Words" . Can we determine his real story as told by Sen Obama"s decisions & actions:

Who Is The Real Sen. Obama?
1- Sen. Obama"s past voting record:

Damning article on how much Sen Obama REALLY cares about the voters and their issues-and- just how good was his legislation for the people?

2- His choice of firm to manage his campaign-firm that specializes in helping black candidates use race baiting to win elections:

3- His choice of Zbigniew Brzezinski (person who at one time some have accused of being a war monger, who has written books on why the US should seek control of Iran if US wants to maintain its global primacy in Euroasia.

I read the Matt Gonzalez article, and it certainly presents what one would call "reasoned criticism." The Nation and New Republic articles are next. Since I've been reading comments by Obama and Clinton supporters on various sites, I've become somewhat discouraged. So many supporters are either putting little tin gods on pedestals or portraying their opposition as a demon from hell, that it is difficult to determine just what these candidates stand for. There is so much wish fulfillment and projection swirling around both Clinton and Obama, that it is hard to see through the mists of exaggeration.

In this election, we hear that WORDS MATTER, and they most certainly do. But we also know that ACTIONS SPEAK louder than words. Therefore, we should all want to learn more about the candidates. Especially Mr. Obama's history and political record, because he is so new on the scene. I don't need to do this with Mrs. Clinton as much. She's been operating in the limelight for quite a while, and there is no shortage of analytical critiques of her record. So thank you, I'm really glad you posted these.

I would think that there are many such "stories" including, perhaps, the uniquely American story that is mine, yours ,etc. Call me a cynic, but I believe we must get past stories and start dealing with reality. I sort of think Obama can do that quite well, but I am sure that "stories" (McCain has a pretty good one also) will not win an election...

This is WHY we need Obama as Commander in Chief ..

He Represents ALL of us.. We have all lived in an America that is ruled by divisiveness.. its literally All we know...

Then comes along a guy who is the True American.. one who IS the epitome of the phrase The Melting Pot.. yea we are all mixed race somewhere down the line.. But this guy has not just talked the talk or walked the walk..... HE is the Walk and the Talk

He is what America Can Be... if we are Americans really love this country we would embrace it and look in the mirror and see that we really are the same...

Well Written Michael.. I read your article in the paper and thought.. WOW.. Smerconish gets it !!

Now lets hope more Pennsylvanians get it as well .. They are smart, I am sure they will..

Wonderful article.

I must read his books.

I also come from a mixed race/mixed cultural
background.

He is what we need, pure and simple.

Barack Obama is an impressive person, and I'm not just talking about his political talents. His story is not only unique, but it is as inspiring as his speeches and his ability to transcend demographics, race, gender and political persuasion. Senator Obama is one of the best politicians I have ever seen in my lifetime. I really hope he gets the chance to serve us as President of the United States. He's not the empty suit that so many Clinton supporters claim and if they would take the time to read his books, they would discover a thoughtful, honest and brilliant man.

This will convince rest of Penn. voters that
BARAK OBAMA is the REAL CHANGE of old politics as usual.

He will UNITE us again as the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
All around the world people want OBAMA to lead US.

He will be highly capable leader. He will bring in talented, top-class technocrats, bureaucrats,
Labor Union workers etc to the CABINET & WA DC.

Do away with the Lobby. And CORRUPTION.

Yes. Obama deserves respect, if not support. Looks like I have 2 books to buy now (Samantha Power's being the other).

Very nice, Michael. When people are amazed that Obama's appeal is more than the Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton's brand of racial politics, they haven't read 'Dreams of My Father'. Long before he announced his candidacy, many had read the book and became his supporters, shared the book with others, and wanted to meet him. Now you know that it is not only his message of change and hope, but his mind that is so attractive.

As a former resident of Philly, I can guess that the city is barely ready for the speeding train that is about to hit. Obama is a phenominom. The reason that Obama does well in primaries or caucuses when he has time to meet voters, is because of his ability to listen, to understand, Saying that Obama is a liberal, totally misses the point. Obama is a practical and rational politician. He has learned from his life experiences, has integrated those experiences into his work. He uses those experiences to inform his judgement.. He has all of the gifts that enables people to go to a rally to see a candidate but come away thinking that they've seen a president.

It ain't about the legilative record (although his is impressive) its about the man.

I think republicans thought like that about Ronald Reagan, but now Obama is the democratic Reagan. Hillary Clinton's wonkishness is no match. I guess you will have to start following Andrew Sullivan. Yep, goodbye to all that.

Well said. I couldn't agree more. His mind -- and his heart too.
