Kathy Griffin Marries New York Couple

Kathy Griffin

NEW YORK — She has been a sitcom character, a sometime talk show host and the centerpiece of her own reality show. Now Kathy Griffin has appeared in an unlikely new role _ minister.

The often provocative comedian _ who raised some Christian groups' hackles by joking about Jesus while accepting an Emmy Award last September _ became ordained through an online church to officiate Saturday at the New York wedding of two fans, Brian Anstey and Elka Shapiro.

"The request came in, and how could I say no?" Griffin, 47, told the Daily News. "I love that this couple just want to have fun. They're my kind of people."

Anstey, 31, is a fifth-grade teacher; Shapiro, 29, is a marketing director. Neither is affiliated with a religion, and "the major factor in our relationship is laughter," Shapiro said.

Griffin flew in from Los Angeles for the wedding at the Queens County Farm Museum. She performed a 10-minute service that ranged from telling raunchy jokes to having the bride recite the reception menu, according to the Daily News.

"It's so unusual and something we'll always remember," Shapiro said.

Viewers of Griffin's reality show, "My Life on the D-List," will be able to see the ceremony for themselves in June, when an episode involving the wedding is to air on Bravo.

Griffin said she was ordained online by the Universal Life Church and completed additional paperwork to meet New York State requirements. But she insisted her role in the wedding was a one-night-only performance.

Besides "D-List," Griffin has appeared as an acerbic columnist on the NBC sitcom "Suddenly Susan" and as a guest host of the ABC talk show "The View."

Yeah, that headline was a bit misleading. I was wondering if she's still engaged to the computer gazillionaire. It would be a relief for her to have a husband who didn't need to steal from her.

The headline is a bit misleading...I thought she got married to two other people! That crazy gal will do anything for a laugh!

Ugh. I've never liked her...I think it's the grating quality of her voice that drives me crazy. She's also looking a little mannish these days. Too much cosmetic surgery!

A mock wedding performed by a mock minister played by a mock comedian. I wouldn't want my child in that teacher's 5th grade class!

The Universal Life Church used to perform ordinations by mail-order. (I think they would consecrate bishops that way too.) Nowadays they do it on-line... how times change!

Universal Life Church is a very modern service that has come in very handy here in Texas. Very dear friends of mine - who just happen to be "same sex" - had lived together for many years and very much wanted to be "married." I became "ordained" so I could assist them in manifesting this strong and ever-present desire. The beautiful "service" was attended by hundreds of their family and friends, who shared in their abundant joy. Although the strong and enduring love they have for each other will probably never be "legally" recognized in this discriminating state, assisting them by "officiating" at their ceremony and "witnessing" their oaths to each other will always be one of my proudest moments. The "couple" remain happy, fulfilled, and in love, and the years that have gone by have only increased their commitment to each other.

So did the newlyweds have to pay her going rate (a lot) or do
online minsters get a tip/stipend (not nearly as much).
Or is this free publicity for her Bravo reality show.

I wonder if their vows will mean more to them now that they've turned them into a standup routine.
