NEW YORK — Madonna, pop music's quick-change artist, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Monday and paid tribute to people who encouraged her and even critics who panned her for helping drive her career.

Heartland hitmaker John Mellencamp, with his son Speck playing guitar and his parents watching from a balcony above the Waldorf Astoria Hotel ballroom, joined the rock-kicking with a rumbling version of "Authority Song."

"I wrote this song, and I still feel the same way today as I did when I wrote it 25 years ago," Mellencamp said.

Philly soul producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, literate songwriter Leonard Cohen, British rockers the Dave Clark Five, and surf instrumentalists the Ventures were among the other inductees.

Madonna recalled key moments of her career, from playing her demo tape for record company president Seymour Stein when he was in a hospital bed hooked up to an IV, to her shock at looking out from the stage at thousands of girls dressed like her. "It freaked me out," she said.

She fondly remembered a teacher who encouraged her to follow her dreams when she was only 14, and said she's lucky to have people around her that are still doing that.

Even the people who "said I was talentless, that I was chubby, that I couldn't sing, that I was a one-hit wonder, they helped me, too," she said. "They inspired me because they made me question myself repeatedly and pushed me to be better."

Singer Justin Timberlake, who helped produce Madonna's upcoming album, inducted her with an innuendo-laden speech.

"The world is full of Madonna wannabes. I might have even dated a couple," said Britney Spears' ex. "But there is truly only one Madonna."

Timberlake told of how he felt ill one day while working on Madonna's new album and she asked whether he wanted a B-12 shot. He said sure, expecting a doctor to show up, but Madonna pulled out a syringe and said, "drop 'em."

After he pulled his pants back up, "she looked at me and said, 'That's top shelf,' and that was one of the greatest days of my life," he said.

"Everything he said is basically true," Madonna confirmed, "but I didn't say 'drop 'em,' I said, 'pull your pants down."

Madonna didn't perform but asked punk rockers Iggy Pop and the Stooges to sing "Burning Up" and "Ray of Light." At the end, a shirtless Pop said, "you make me feel shiny and new, like a virgin touched for the very first time," and tossed his microphone to the floor.

Mellencamp talked of having surgery for spina bifida when he was 6 weeks old, saying doctors were worried he would be paralyzed below the neck. The 56-year-old rocker said he never knew of the surgery until his teen years, when a classmate asked him about the scar behind his neck.

His grandmother always whispered in his ear, "Buddy, you're the luckiest boy alive."

"I'm lucky to be standing here for any number of reasons," said Mellencamp, a heart patient who snuffed out a cigarette as he took the stage.

Fellow Hall of Fame member Billy Joel, who inducted Mellencamp, said, "You scared us a couple of times when we thought we might have lost you a couple of times, even though it might have been a good career move."

The world needed Mellencamp's voice, he said.

"They need to hear somebody out there feels like they do, in the small towns or the big cities," Joel said. "And it doesn't matter if they hear it on a jukebox in a gin mill or on a ... truck commercial."

Gamble, taking the stage with his longtime partner, invited the audience to answer back his wish for "peace."

"Thank you so much, because that's exactly what our music represented," Gamble told the people gathered at the famed hotel for the annual ceremony, televised on VH1 Classic.

Patti LaBelle performed a chandelier-shaking rendition of "If You Don't Know Me By Now" to introduce Gamble and Huff. The songwriters and producers created a lush, melodic brand of soul known for their hometown and performed by a variety of artists.

Gamble cited one: Billy Paul's tale of the adulterous affair in "Me and Mrs. Jones."

"There's a little 'Me and Mrs. Jones' going on here in New York," he said to laughter, hours after New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer was accused of hiring a prostitute.

He dispelled one rumor. The song "MFSB" stood for mother, father, sister, brother, he insisted. For years, others let their imaginations run wild with the initials.

One odd sign of the times: among the favors distributed to guests at Monday's dinner was a box of 30 blank CDs, presumably so people wouldn't have to worry about buying CDs anymore.

The Ventures excelled at what is almost a forgotten art in rock music _ the instrumental. Nokie Edwards' twangy guitar gave the band its distinctive sound. They performed their first hit, "Walk, Don't Run," and "Hawaii Five-O."

John Fogerty recalled how he and fellow members of Creedence Clearwater Revival used to hang out in a garage learning the Ventures' songs.

"When the Ventures first hit the radio, I would say I was gone," Fogerty said. "The Ventures went on to record 250 albums. Think about that. These days, some of us would be happy to sell 250 albums."

Cohen, a Canadian, is one of music's most highly regarded, if not best-known, songwriters, through pieces like "Suzanne" and the much-covered "Hallelujah." Damien Rice sang the latter song in tribute.

Lou Reed, who was inducting Cohen, carried a sheaf of papers to the stage and read several examples of Cohen's lyrics.

"We're so lucky to be alive at the same time Leonard Cohen is," Reed said.

Cohen, dressed in a black tux, recited the lyrics to his song "Tower of Song" in a hushed voice.

"This is a very unlikely occasion for me," he said. "It is not a distinction that I coveted or even dared dream about."

The Dave Clark Five followed the Beatles in the original British Invasion, with catchy hits including "Glad All Over." Led by drummer and songwriter Clark, the band enters the hall at a tragic time: singer Mike Smith died at age 64 of pneumonia less than two weeks ago.

"Mike tried desperately to be here with us tonight," Clark said. "At least he knows he's a hall of famer. Mike, you're with us in spirit, my friend, and always will be."

Little Walter, who died in 1968, joins the hall in its sidemen category. He recorded frequently with Muddy Waters in the 1950s.

People are really getting hung up on a strict definition of "Rock 'N' Roll" that the Hall of Fame doesn't use. "rock 'n' roll" in this case refers to pretty much all pop music forms in/unique to the "rock 'n' roll" era. There are many artists that would not pass the "are they rock n' roll" test. The Supremes and the entire Motown roster aren't rock. Last year Grand Master Flash a pioneering Rap/hip hop act was inducted. Miles Davis has been inducted. The list is long of acts that would be more fairly categorized as pop, jazz, R&B, folk, or Soul: Percy Sledge, Brenda Lee, Isaac Hayes, Michael Jackson (so not rock - the "king of Pop"), Paul Simon, Earth Wind and Fire, Billie Holiday, Dusty Springfield, Billy Joel, The Staple Singers, The Mamas and the Papas, The Bee Gees, . The list goes on and on.

Madonna is one of the most powerful, popular and influential women in the history of popular music. She has a career that is legendary and is still a hit and taste maker. It's really a no-brainer that she was inducted in the first year of her eligibility. Her influence goes beyond mere performance or song writing. She's influenced the business end and shown women how to be in control of their careers. She's also had a major impact on the intersection between music and how it influences the way we live our lives, dress, how we react to sex and provocative public behavior, and even how we treat people.

Even when I don't like some of her music I admire her.

How do you get off asserting that a place that calls itself "The Rock N Roll Hall of Fame Museum" doesn't use a 'strict definition of Rock 'N' Roll'?

If the people behind the establishment wanted it to be a museum that includes honoring people from the "Popular Music" or Folk Music" traditions then it should have named itself appropriately and not called itself The Rock N Roll Hall of Fame Museum.

How can you admire that. Sure she has done well.. only because people flocked to her like they flock to the more modern day stars.. like Brittany ... Paris... Linsey Lohan??.. Give me a break..
You can not even compare someone who.. plays no instrument... writes no lyrics.. can't eeven read music to say.. McCArtney and Lennon..
See... time really tells about music.. Beatles tunes.. still around.. Clapton... Fleetwood Mac... all still doing well in sales and radio... Madonna.. 10 years from now people will say Who?
Madonna got famous by screwing a lot of guys (and girls).. singing a few (not bad.. but not great)songs and making a few really bad movies... the people who vote and induct these nominees are bribed.. Im sure.

Bwhahahahaahaha you are off your rocker. Seriously...I don't think you believe half what you typed. Madonna has also inspired Tori Amos, Alanis, Liz Phair, Kelly Clarkson to name a few. Pretty much inspired everyone, good and bad. She plays the guitar( here's a hint: she has played it since 1978. Oh and drums too!). She has written her own music since oh, 1978. When you say "10 years from now people will say WHO?"...I mean that is so laughable. That is what they said in 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005. You guys are lousy at predicting. Don't suppose you got any Nostrodamus blood in your veins! LOL That's OK sweety. Madonna will just keep on selling millions, selling out stadiums around the world, winning awards. You can keep teeth gnashing your nonsense.

MIles Davis put together a few bands that could be called Rock and Roll. The band he used to record the album called "Jack Johnson" in the early 70s and I still have and play and love is most definately Rock and Roll at its very finest. Then there was the band he used for "Bitches Brew" and "In a Silent Way", both as much Rock and Roll as they are jazz. Plus Miles influenced so many Rock and Roll musicians. Everyone was listening to Miles Davis.

Madonna, feh! she's just a 50 hit wonder.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:14 PM on 03/11/2008

She may have had 50 hit's I have no doubt.. some were even ok in my book, but there wasn't a note of rock n' roll in any of her songs. If you gauge rock by the standard definition of rock. Heart, Joan Jett, Steveie Nicks, Pat Benatar.. they are rockers.. Madonna is a bubble gum pop star.

Really, if you naysayers want to be taken a wee bit seriously you will knock off the bubble gum crap. Hardly anyone would catagorize 90% of her catalogue as bubblegum. I mean honestly! I could tick off 50 songs that are nowhere near bubblegum. Plenty of her songs have had rock in them. In fact, most songs on Ray or Light, Music, American Life had guitar heavily throughout them. As did much of her early work.

No matter because she was inducted to wild cheers from the stodgy industry crowd( as reported in various news outlets). She is in and no amount of carping is going to change that. I can tell you a lot of other female singers, many of her contemporaries, will never see the light of day in the Rock Hall.

OK, Hall Of Fame - where is Roxy Music, Mott the Hoople/Ian Hunter, Motorhead, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden? Roxy was a major innovator in the glam era, with their own sound. Ian and Mott are/were true rockers with their own legend. And why the hell does metal have such a hard time being acknowledged? How many times were Black Sabbath nominated and Madonna gets in her first time?! These three bands have influenced countless bands and belong in the more than Madonna. As far as I'm concerned, another British Invasion band should be in, because of their cult status and their influence on '60's garage-rock. They also came up with the first "rock opera" concept album, before the Who's "Tommy", "S.F. Sorrow." I am referring to the Pretty Things, who I have been a fan of since 1964. When does Iggy get in?

Let's face it, there are countless examples of who should already be in. I imagine sales counts more now. These people will get their due. It doesn't take away from Madonna and the fact she deserves this. I was P'Od Metallica didn't get nominated this year. Madonna was a pioneer of the the 80's sound. She had an incredible vision of what her music should sound like and went full force to make it that way. She wanted a blend of R&B, funk, rock and soul. She didn't want a pure sound. She found that boring. Her music fused many genres together. That is why it is hard to classify her as rock but everything about her is rock. Her early work is remarkable. WB is supposed to release some of her more rare collections that are said to be stunning by insiders. All of it is very rock, very edgy.

Actually, Metallica would be eligible this year, as "Kill 'Em All" was released in 1983, so 2008 would be the first eligble year. And, yeah, they should get in (I did say "should").

Metallica becomes eligible this year, since "Kill 'Em All" was released in 1983. It would be nice to get them in just to get the rare metal band in for a change. Too bad Cliff Burton isn't around for it.

whether Madonna is "rock and roll" depends on whether you define it as a strict genre of music, or a cultural force. Whatever... but Wanda Jackson, groundbreaking early rock and roller is still not in - why? because lets face it, it's about celebrity, not talent. You could argue Leonard Cohen is not R&R too, but thank goodness they gave him the nod, and I'd love to hear Lou reed's full induction speech if anyone knows where it can be found.

Madonna Shmadonna, did anyone get a look at Dave Clark?
What the hell happened?
When they showed him standing in the side lines as Tom Hanks was inducting the band, I thought he was an extra from some alien movie lost in the wrong set.
It looked like Dave had gone to Michael Jackson's plastic surgeon.
Put the scalpel down dude.

"The crowd was whooping" says the press in reference to her induction. Face the facts, she is critically acclaimed. She got in HER FIRST YEAR ELIGIBLE. That is almost unheard of. I understand some of you are upset that other, older rock acts have yet to be inducted. I do get that. There are many that should be in already. That doesn't take away from Madonna, who has given us great great music of all genres( pop, rock, r&b, techno. electronica, a lil country). She is a superb songwriter. She has a very good voice( Evita, her 1991 live Oscar performance, Ray of Light live on Oprah sung in original key).

Her fellow musicians know how good she is. Inside the industry, they all know what a talent she is. Of course she has her detractors( everyone does, there are people who think the Beatles were trash). When 500 female musicians ranked the Greatest Female artists in ROCK AND ROLL, Madonna ranked #8( VH-1 compiled the list). None of her contemporaries were above her. She has had 2 albums rated as masterpieces( Like A Prayer and Ray of Light, google the reviews).

When she is gone only then will she be fully appreciated because there will never be another like her. Madonna, yes she is a Rock Star and always will be.

She's pop not rock. Rock is when four or five people go into a room and come out with raw original music. pop is when a producer puts a product together. the only difference here is she eventually became her own producer.

Eventually? She produced her own stuff from the beginning. She is the epitome of a collaborative artist like most bands are. She probably is this way because she was part of bands in her early days.

Madonna?!?! If she can get in, then next year they should induct a drum machine and lip-synching technology. Not to mention whatever software is used in the studios to make her sound like she can actually sing. Does anyone remember when she had to sing live at the Academy Awards? What a joke! This woman couldn't sing on key if her life depended on it.
