Oprah Mails Out Mass Mea Culpa

Oprah Mails Out Mass Mea Culpa

Last week, Oprah's attempt at a live webcast with book club author Eckhart Tolle was a debacle — the servers crashed due to overwhelming demand and the event was a flop. Now, Oprah's giving it a second try, but not without a mass apology for what went wrong.

From the New York Post:

In an email sent over the weekend to hundreds of thousands of fans who signed up for an online class with her latest book club author, the talk-show host blamed her Web site crashing on a "programming problem."

It has now been fixed, she says. A live webcast is expected to draw about 1 million people tonight when Oprah hosts the second of eight Monday night appearances.

I can't get my website working right either. The problem is different from O. I don't have legions of IT people jumping at my every word.

Yeah, what a disaster having an overwhelming amount of fans so interested in your online class that the server crashes.

Oprah just seems to have the Midas touch because even when she loses she wins. She's even getting free publicity as we post here today. Cha-ching!!!

A flop NOT! This is an unprecedented event with hundreds of thousands around the globe tuning in on the web. Big deal because it froze the first time, number two was glitch-less. And what's with the Oprah bashing? No one forces anyone to watch. Oprah is just trying to help people wake up, and she recognizes that Eckhart Tolle is one of the most clear, realized teachers on the planet. I have studied with him in India and was moved by his humbleness and desire to assist in deepening one's awareness. Over 40 years of adulthood I have read many spiritual guides and Eckhart's work ranks right at the top. So thanks to Oprah and thanks to Eckhart.

Look, she may not be the woman of the Century, but I like her and I like that she brought Tolle to us.

Tolle has been around a long time. Oprah just finding out about him is very unimpressive.

Seeing the headline, to mind came: Oprah mails out mass mea culpa to the masses of mostly white, middle age, middle class women who made her a billionaire and whom she let down with her endorsement of Obama.

Haters, stop attacking Oprah. She never lied to anyone. She never slandered or smeared anyone. She has never run for office while hiding her tax returns.

Haters, if you're looking for someone to attack, try the woman who's attempting to steal the Democratic nomination and thwart the will of the people.

Haters, never forget that Hillary Clinton is the Yoko Ono of the Democratic party; because marrying a Beatle doesn't make you a Beatle.

Your comment is really simplistic. Oprah, while far from perfect, has given hope to millions of American women, through her shows, magazines, workshops and books. She uses her star power to generate good will, not hate. She has also donated millions of dollars to good causes. I am honored that she supports Obama. Why do some of you cynics can't never see the good side of people?

The good news is that all the bitter, hateful comments are pulled away from Hillary and onto Oprah for a brief moment. Makes me wonder why people love to hurl all the hate to women in power. However, I do think Oprah is the queen of materialism. And it's easy to appear to be giving huge amounts to charity when you have a billion and a half in the bank. I wonder how many Hermes scarfs Mother Theresa wore.

None, she prefered Jimmy Choo shoes since they wouldn't be so obvious beneath her habit. I agree, too, with the charity comment...most of what Oprah gets credit for giving wasn't out of her own pocket. You think it's Oprah, or NBC sponsors who are doing the Big Give? Even the Tolle webcast has several sponsors. Oprah may have come up with the idea and the staff, but the sponsors are paying for the gig, and I'd be surprised if Oprah and Tolle aren't being paid handsomely for their time.

It's fine to love Oprah. Just be aware it is unconditional on your side, only. She does what she does because of what it does for her in money, position, and image.

I believe Oprah is proof that no matter how rich you are or how accomplished you may seem, happiness can elude you. Oprah is always looking for the next big find and that isn't a problem in and of itself. The problem is that she sincerely believes that she knows what is best for her viewers and non-viewing public and persists in force feeding it down our throats. I don't know about you all, but I don't want a new earth. I like this one just fine. The problem isn't the world, but some of the people in it. If she doesn't want to channel her energy in changing all of the evil leaders on earth, she should stop trying to brainwash all of the vulnerable and gullible people who will only continue to live at the mercy of evil. In her blind pursuits, she is creating more victims who will not know how to follow their conscience and rise up against their oppressors.

Some of you obviously don't watch Oprah, nor know her messages. Yes, sometimes she can be superficial, but she has to be, because in this materialistic society, her show would flop if she didn't cater to those viewers who are more trivial. But putting that aside, she has done so much for so many people, that I can ignore her shortcomings. We live in a capitalistic, materialistic society and what Oprah has done, is use her star power to generate good will. She has generated enthusiasm for literature in a way no author has. She has opened discussions to very little know subjects. She has showcased in her shows the plight of the poor and generated millions of dollars for good causes. Through her self-help shows, she has helped countless women find their own voice and and find new lives. What is wrong with using your celebrity status to motivate and help people?

Wow! Didn't check with Oprah before you wrote this, did you? In fact, I suspect that you're going to hear a knock on the door. Don't be surprised when the Oprah Police appear. We will assume that they've been sent by the show's producers and advertisers...or maybe Oprah herself!

You said that Oprah is sometimes superficial. (Now, why on Earth did the image of Tom Cruise, a'leapin' onto the couch, pop into my head?) But she has to be! Yeah, if she isn't superficial, her show will flop! A ringing endorsement, if I ever heard one. Nope, not her fault, it's the materialistic society which is to blame.

Maybe that's a good idea for one of her shows: This Materialistic Society and What We Can Do To Change It. Doubtful, though. Those in the audience - in the studio and at home - would be confronted by their materialism. Would there be self-pity? Nah, not likely. Her next show would be: How To Overcome Your Materialism and Live A Happy Life.

Then the show would flop. After all, she's catering to those viewers who are more trivial and materialistic. Now, on which side of that fence do reside? Yeah, yeah, yeah...we know. But since you know so much about Oprah, tell us: Does she straighten her halo by herself or does she have someone do it for her?

On par I think Ms. Winfrey misleads her quasi Stepford followers; I think she is distracting them from more important matters and I get the impression she is not even aware of it. I concur with many of the comments regarding the incessant focus on money and material possessions; for every person with more than they need, there are several others around the world going without. I don't think it's her fault, it's the fault of the masses who tune her in instead of empowering themselves.
All this chit chat about christianity is misleading in the same way. One does not need a name tag to be a good person, just do it and leave the name calling out of it. Bear in mind that it has been christianity and it's like minded counterparts that have gotten the world where it is today.

Oprah is so unbelievably overrated. I support Obama in spite of Oprah. The thing I can't stand about Oprah is one day of the week, she'll do a show where the premise is how wrong it is to let young women be influenced by societal pressures regarding their appearance. The next day she'll do a show where she has guests show viewers how to dress so they look 10 pounds slimmer and 10 years younger. She talks about how great it is to give, yet her hobby is acquiring expensive property for herself, and shopping at Hermes while wearing matching 12 carat diamond earrings.

And the real danger is that she is so influential. Her followers seem to abdicate their own powers of reasoning to her better judgment. Let's hope she doesn't lead them astray.

If they didn't have Oprah to guide them, they'd have to turn to some freak preacher like Hagee, or Roberts, or one of their ilk. A lot of people want someone else to do their thinking, and Oprah is arrogant enough to volunteer.
