1 in 4 Teen Girls Has Sexual Disease

CHICAGO — At least one in four teenage girls nationwide has a sexually transmitted disease, or more than 3 million teens, according to the first study of its kind in this age group.

A virus that causes cervical cancer is by far the most common sexually transmitted infection in teen girls aged 14 to 19, while the highest overall prevalence is among black girls _ nearly half the blacks studied had at least one STD. That rate compared with 20 percent among both whites and Mexican-American teens, the study from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found.

About half of the girls acknowledged ever having sex; among them, the rate was 40 percent. While some teens define sex as only intercourse, other types of intimate behavior including oral sex can spread some infections.

For many, the numbers likely seem "overwhelming because you're talking about nearly half of the sexually experienced teens at any one time having evidence of an STD," said Dr. Margaret Blythe, an adolescent medicine specialist at Indiana University School of Medicine and head of the American Academy of Pediatrics' committee on adolescence.

But the study highlights what many doctors who treat teens see every day, Blythe said.

Dr. John Douglas, director of the CDC's division of STD prevention, said the results are the first to examine the combined national prevalence of common sexually transmitted diseases among adolescent girls. He said the data, from 2003-04, likely reflect current rates of infection.

"High STD rates among young women, particularly African-American young women, are clear signs that we must continue developing ways to reach those most at risk," Douglas said.

The CDC's Dr. Kevin Fenton said given that STDs can cause infertility and cervical cancer in women, "screening, vaccination and other prevention strategies for sexually active women are among our highest public health priorities."

The study by CDC researcher Dr. Sara Forhan is an analysis of nationally representative data on 838 girls who participated in a 2003-04 government health survey. Teens were tested for four infections: human papillomavirus, or HPV, which can cause cervical cancer and affected 18 percent of girls studied; chlamydia, which affected 4 percent; trichomoniasis, 2.5 percent; and herpes simplex virus, 2 percent.

Blythe said the results are similar to previous studies examining rates of those diseases individually.

The results were prepared for release Tuesday at a CDC conference in Chicago on preventing sexually transmitted diseases.

HPV can cause genital warts but often has no symptoms. A vaccine targeting several HPV strains recently became available, but Douglas said it likely has not yet had much impact on HPV prevalence rates in teen girls.

Chlamydia and trichomoniasis can be treated with antibiotics. The CDC recommends annual chlamydia screening for all sexually active women under age 25. It also recommends the three-dose HPV vaccine for girls aged 11-12 years, and catch-up shots for females aged 13 to 26.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has similar recommendations.

Douglas said screening tests are underused in part because many teens don't think they're at risk, but also, some doctors mistakenly think, '"Sexually transmitted diseases don't happen to the kinds of patients I see.'"

Blythe said some doctors also are reluctant to discuss STDs with teen patients or offer screening because of confidentiality concerns, knowing parents would have to be told of the results.

The American Academy of Pediatrics supports confidential teen screening, she said.

I love the hypocrisy disguised as "empathy" of Planned Parenthood. Does anyone really think they care about the well-being of anyone besides the abortionist?

If we're going by numbers of this "study," 20% of white and Asian girls have std's, 48% ! of black girls have std's.

Two and a half times more! Black community, take notice.

What we obviously need is MORE sex education. We are apparently not getting through to these kids. If we push for MORE sex education, we may be able to push that statistic up to 1 in 3 or maybe even 1 in 2...then we have really accomplished something.

Are people really this stupid to believe that further sexualizing our CHILDREN will actually PREVENT these problems rather than exacerbate them??? It is becoming rather obvious, but apparently not to everyone.

The alarming rate of STDs in teens is sobering. Not to minimize the importance of it, if we were speaking of Africa, the percentage would be much higher and the disease would be deadly Aids/HIV. Charity does begin at home, I agree. bobbyvassallo.com

BS me no BS please: teens, kids, whatever-if you are MATURE and RESPONSIBLE enough to have sex, you protect yourself
"but kids/teens are'nt educated enough"....
horseplop! maybe 1% don't grasp sex can result in pregnancy...
It is YOUR job as a parent to educate YOUR child (listen-up neo-nutty conservatives!) schools need to teach sex-ed, birth control, etc. PARENTS are the ones who need to deal with "comfort" issues- it is not my job to make YOUR child comfortable with the choices they make!

Some sexually active teen-agers will boast tthat they don't have a mere case of an STD; they will say that they are the diseases's national distributor in addition to being the good time that's been had by all. Mass seduction has been an American custom ever since human beings set foot here & populated the Americas. The Puritans's efforts to end this custom failed. W & the fundie, neo-con, so called religious right's just say no [to sex] campaign was doomed to failure from the start too. Americans will not abandon this time-honored custom for it is a precious part of the American's culture & heritage. Developing & providing all Americans with vaccines to prevent & control STD's is the only way to control the spread of STD's.

Yes, but the point here is that is that these diseases are much more serious for females. For example. HPV can cause cervical cancer in females. Herpes can cause mothers to have to undergo C-sections. Chlamydia can cause infertility in females.

Males can get all of these diseases, but the consequences are potentially much more serious for females. And that's even apart from the risk of pregnancy.

Non-monogamous sex is much riskier for females than for males, and anyone who won't admit that girls need to be protected from this must have some kind of hatred for girls.

It is not about who is giving what to whom. Rather, it is to recognize that at a certain age teens are likely going to start having sex and they need education about sexually transmitted diseases and the use of condoms to prevent pregnancy and disease.

This article is a thinly disguised advertisement for the HPV vaccine which is making killing girls and making them sick and only protects against one or a few strands fo the virus which makes the vaccine useless because there are HUNDREDS of strands of the HPV virus.

Also, HPV is not a traditional STD, simply the act of having sex with the pushing in of bacteria etc. can cause HPV so that means even if you and your partner have only ever had one sexual partner, just the act of sex can transmit HPV.

That being said, it's disgusting that so many CHILDREN are sexually active and getting diseased. It's just repulsive.

One of the disturbing health trends globally is the re-emergence of TB as an epidemic and it's spreading sexually in North America at alarming rates.

Safe Sex is for consenting adults.

Nope, Safe Sex is for ANYONE who has sex. If you're old enough to do it, you need to be smart enough not to risk disaster.

The fact that it is not known as a "sexually transmitted disease" does not mean that it cannot be transmitted sexually..............now you determine the how..

The ignorance represented in your post is part of the reason that the teenage STD rate is so frighteningly high.

I pray that you don't have any daughters.

Your right about this study being an advertisement for the HPV vaccine. Although some branch of the CDC may have done the study, I would not be shocked if a little research uncovered that the "sponsors" of the study were none other than Merck (the makers of Gardasil). This "shocking" report that shows 1 in 4 women have an "STD" is not all that shocking. That statistic has not changed. 7 years ago the statistic WAS 1 in 4. The so called STD that affected 1 in 4- HPV. As you pointed out, HPV is not a traditional STD. Almost every woman who has ever had sex in her life can and will be infected with HPV. Women just need to know that and make sure that they get their yearly or bi-yearly pap smear. This vaccine has not been proven to prevent any of the serious strains of HPV and it CANNOT protect women who have already had sex. It is a very new vaccine and ALREADY there have been claims of horrible side affects. I would NOT give this vaccine to my daughter.
