Fallon Resigns As Mideast Military Chief

  |   March 11, 2008 at 03:59 PM

"The top U.S. military commander for the Middle East resigned Tuesday amid speculation about a rift over U.S. policy in Iran," the AP reports.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates said that Adm. William J. Fallon had asked for permission to retire and that Gates agreed. Gates said the decision, effective March 31, was entirely Fallon's and that Gates believed it was "the right thing to do."

Fallon was the subject of an article published last week in Esquire magazine that portrayed him as opposed to President Bush's Iran policy. It described Fallon as a lone voice against taking military action to stop the Iranian nuclear program.

Fallon, who is traveling in Iraq, issued a statement through his U.S. headquarters in Tampa, Fla.

"Recent press reports suggesting a disconnect between my views and the president's policy objectives have become a distraction at a critical time and hamper efforts in the Centcom region," Fallon said.

"And although I don't believe there have ever been any differences about the objectives of our policy in the Central Command area of responsibility, the simple perception that there is makes it difficult for me to effectively serve America's interests there," Fallon added.

Gates described as "ridiculous" any notion that Fallon's departure signals the United States is planning to go to war with Iran. And he said "there is a misperception" that Fallon disagrees with the administration's approach to Iran.

"I don't think there were differences at all," Gates added.

As ThinkProgress notes, Fallon opposed the "surge" in Iraq and has consistently battled the Bush administration to avoid a confrontation with Iran, calling officials' saber-rattling "not helpful." Privately, he vowed that an attack on Iran "will not happen on my watch."

A blockbuster Esquire article published last week predicted that Fallon would be removed to make way for a general who was more "pliable" to war with Iran:

If, in the dying light of the Bush administration, we go to war with Iran, it'll all come down to one man. If we do not go to war with Iran, it'll come down to the same man. He is that rarest of creatures in the Bush universe: the good cop on Iran, and a man of strategic brilliance. His name is William Fallon, although all of his friends call him "Fox," which was his fighter-pilot call sign decades ago. [...]

Just as Fallon took over Centcom last spring, the White House was putting itself on a war footing with Iran. Almost instantly, Fallon began to calmly push back against what he saw as an ill-advised action. Over the course of 2007, Fallon's statements in the press grew increasingly dismissive of the possibility of war, creating serious friction with the White House.

Last December, when the National Intelligence Estimate downgraded the immediate nuclear threat from Iran, it seemed as if Fallon's caution was justified. But still, well-placed observers now say that it will come as no surprise if Fallon is relieved of his command before his time is up next spring, maybe as early as this summer, in favor of a commander the White House considers to be more pliable. If that were to happen, it may well mean that the president and vice-president intend to take military action against Iran before the end of this year and don't want a commander standing in their way.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) quickly released a statement: "I am concerned that the resignation of Admiral William J. Fallon, commander of all U.S. forces in the Middle East and a military leader with more than three decades of command experience, is yet another example that independence and the frank, open airing of experts' views are not welcomed in this Administration."

More from AP:

Fallon has had a 41-year Navy career. He took the Central Command post on March 16, 2007, succeeding Army Gen. John Abizaid, who retired. Fallon previously served as commander of U.S. Pacific Command.

President Bush issued a statement saying that Fallon "has served our Nation with great distinction for forty years. He is an outstanding sailor -- and he made history as the first naval officer to serve as commander of Central Command. "

Gates said that until a permanent replacement is nominated and confirmed by the Senate, Fallon's place will be taken by his top deputy, Army Lt. Gen. Martin Dempsey.

The secretary called Fallon a very able military strategist and said his advice will be missed at the Pentagon.

"I think this is a cumulative kind of thing," said Gates, speaking of the circumstances leading up to Fallon's decision. "It isn't the result of any one article or any one issue."

"As I say, the notion that this decision portends anything in terms of change in Iran policy is, to quote myself, 'ridiculous,' " he said.

There should be no doubt that Bush will bomb Iran before he leaves office. It will be his parting gift. If he creates a war with Iran, then McCain will have a better chance of winning the general election. That's the plan, and Clinton will have authorized the Iran bombing by voting for Kyl/Lieberman.

I'm terrified he is gone. He said that we wouldn't bomb Iran on his watch. This should be a wake up call for everyone.

George Bush is singing and dancing into history. His little singsong this week invoking, Brownie"s incompetence, Rice"s ineptitude, Libby"s treason, and Cheney"s secrecy, put me in mind of his oval office WMD hunt. I really don"t know if this man has a moral compass, because I can"t think of one president in US history, Roosevelt, Truman, LBJ, even Nixon who joked about war. With Fallons"s resignation, I fear the last firewall against a conflict with Iran has been eliminated. Once again the Bush Administration fires a general officer for putting the well being of the military and country first.

It"s not unprecedented for a president to dismiss a general officer over policy disagreements. Lincoln replaced George McClellan, with Grant because he was not using his superior Union army to engage Lee and lost when he did. In 1933, FDR accepted the resignation Maj.-Gen. Smedley Butler for merely being approached by a wealthy secretive group industrialists and bankers calling themselves the American Liberty League, the members of which will give you pause, to stage the over though of the Administration, accusing him of being a socialist, the new state would have been fascist in nature. Truman fired Mcarthur for politically lobbying the public in order to expand the Korean War to China with Nuclear weapons.

This current situation is different, now we have Commander Chief who claims he listens to his generals, yet forces them out when they give honest assessments of military readiness. Paul Wolfowitz personally fired Army Secretary Thomas White, because he backed General Eric Shinseki"s under oath testimony of the troop strength necessary to invade and occupy Iraq. Eric Shinseki was latter forced out. Fallon"s resignation, David Petraeus"s boss, looks much like that of Eric Shinseki, he was forced out over honest assessment of military readiness to launch an attack against Iran. Jack Cafferty put is best, when he commented last night that Fallon"s resignation over a military assessment was a shameful way for a 41 year career dedicated to this country to end, the reason only nitwits still remain in the Bush Administration.

Bush and the rest of the neocons know that the only chance they have of selling McWarlover to the country (and for people to forget about his Bush's blunders in Iraq) is to start up something with Iran before the general election.

Hope you're ready for $8 a gallon oil...

This is why you need to get James Webb on the ticket, even though he has a big ego for a Veep and the position on gays. Be pragmatic and win this thing with Obama and Webb and get the decent people left in the military on our side. The guy is a voter magnet for independents.

These people are crazy and war mongers....not exactly a great combination. Too bad so many good people are caught up in this thickheaded, thoughtless method of deciding this nation's foreign policy.

Easy fix. Make sure the Senate doesn't confirm the new guy and let Obama/Hillary pick the next one.

This is another example of how grotesque the political process is in the United States today; how a feral, ignorant, monarchist can move out another brilliant general and continue on his way to render our military and destroy the financial base of the U.S. This fucking 18 month nomination process needs to come to an end and all of our Senators and Congressman, no matter what kind of corrupt, white trash they might happen to be, need to return to Washington to protect the nation from this clear and present danger.

It's hard to imagin being an Admiral, serving 41 years in the United States Navy, and you boss is a war time deserter, and war criminal. And has your ass for not being a good Nazi.

If we get into a conflict with Iran before next January 2009 when the newly elected president is scheduled to assume his or her duties- does this mean that Pres Bush may be able to cash in on NSPD 51-
and maintain control over the country since we will -in effect- be in a state of emergency if a war occurs?

Although Gates denies this is a pre-cursor to invading Iran, I don't believe it for a minute. Both Bush and Cheney want McCain to win so desperately that they'll invade before the Republican convention and may do so before the Democatic convention in August. McCain has no other skills as he's a military commander and that's it folks.

Thank you, Admiral Fallon. Read this story and discussions while you can as they are disappearing all over the internet - even on real progressive message boards. This news is devestating.
Why is this being allowed to languish here? I couldn't even log in yesterday.

My guess he gets replaced by an Air Farce, Christo-Facist General. Those guys love to bomb for J.C.

Like it or not, everybody serves at the pleasure of the President. We elected Bush twice and we deserve the government that we elected. Let hope we will all be wiser on who we will elect for the next 4 years.

China, Russia Welcome Iran into the Fold
M K Bhadrakumar | Asia Times | April 18, 2006

"By the end of April (2006) the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency is expected to report to the United Nations Security Council in New York regarding Iran's compliance with the IAEA resolutions and the Security Council's presidential statement, which stresses the importance of Iran "reestablishing full, sustained suspension of uranium-enrichment activities".

The SCO membership is therefore a lifeline for Iran in political and economic terms. The SCO is not a military bloc but is nonetheless a security organization committed to countering terrorism, religious extremism and separatism. SCO membership would debunk the US propaganda about Iran being part of an "axis of evil"."

Read and enterprate the following snipets of political windbaggery(I think I just coined a new word),and see what actualy was said:

"Gates said the decision, effective March 31 was was entirely Fallon's,and Gates believed it was the right thing to do."

A few paragraphs later we read,"Gates said that until a permanent replacement is nominated and confirmed by the Senate,Fallon's place will be taken by his deputy,Army Lt.Gen.Martin Dempsy."

It is apparant to me,Fallon's ass was fired right there on the spot.

History is replete with this type of sneaky chicanery by politicians! What, really is happening is Fallon is fired and will be able to tetire with full pension ond other high ranking military perks, provided he keeps his mouth shut!

Wheather or not he keeps his promiss is something only history will tell.

Why Fallon's Resignation is Frightening Defense Secretary Robert Gates did not have to accept Admiral Fallon's resignation. "The military people think basically that Admiral Fallon was PUSHED OUT" - Mark Thompson Time Magazine National Security Correspondent
Fallon is described as "the one person in the military or Pentagon standing between the White House and war with Iran."

Seems like there's been an AWFUL high turnover of people at the top of our military under Bush's regime. It appears they all have to 'march in step' with him (regardless of consequences to the military), and then they retire. What's that about? May as well put a revolving door on these positions.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:38 AM on 03/12/2008

Of course Adm. Fallon had to resign. He didnt say what Bush wanted to hear. Is it any wonder that the country is in such terrible shape? I hope that all of you who voted for this idiot are proud of your decision. Your choice, along with the Supreme Court's decision to interfere with an election, is responsible for the mess we currently find ourselves in. Meanwhile your president continues to make an ass of himself with his dancing and singing, appearing completely oblivious and insensitive to the horror and damage that his presidency has caused both at home and around the world.

Let's hope Admiral Fallon's voice & guidance will now be heard by all of America.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:04 AM on 03/12/2008

If the Admiral really had guts, he would have stayed and made them fire him in a messy scandal. Then he really would have been serving the America Bush has betrayed.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:44 AM on 03/12/2008

Wow, this is devastating news, the Warmonger in Chief could not stand having a reasonable, non-belligerent top Pentagon Officer running his Military operations.

I have been very confused about how Fallon landed the Joint Chiefs position in the first place.

Here we have the most violent psychopathic president in our history and then along comes this Admiral who seems to be the antithesis of his boss??

This dichotomy is finally sorting itself out, Bush could no longer tolerate being around his top military adviser a man who did not promote war, who did not refer to "evil" countries as evil or the enemy but rather took a calm sobering, realistic attitute toward war and peace.

Admiral the country will miss your non belligerent approach to diplomacy and now we are left at the mercy of a madman who prefers bully diplomacy and war over sincere diplomacy and peace.

Iranians, start practicing how to take cover in air raid shelters, it appears you guys are next on our Shock and Awe list.

Admiral Fallon . . . I salute you . . . think Reid just about summed it up: "I am concerned that the resignation of Admiral William J. it is time pelosi was forced to put impeachment on the agenda . . . this regime will stop at nothing to start another war and to someone remain in power despite the election . .. we all know that bush and cheney are war criminals . . . it is time to start the process and then send them to the Hague along with tony bliar
