William Falon Resigns

"The top U.S. military commander for the Middle East resigned Tuesday amid speculation about a rift over U.S. policy in Iran," the AP reports.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates said that Adm. William J. Fallon had asked for permission to retire and that Gates agreed. Gates said the decision, effective March 31, was entirely Fallon's and that Gates believed it was "the right thing to do."

Fallon was the subject of an article published last week in Esquire magazine that portrayed him as opposed to President Bush's Iran policy. It described Fallon as a lone voice against taking military action to stop the Iranian nuclear program.

Fallon, who is traveling in Iraq, issued a statement through his U.S. headquarters in Tampa, Fla.

"Recent press reports suggesting a disconnect between my views and the president's policy objectives have become a distraction at a critical time and hamper efforts in the Centcom region," Fallon said.

"And although I don't believe there have ever been any differences about the objectives of our policy in the Central Command area of responsibility, the simple perception that there is makes it difficult for me to effectively serve America's interests there," Fallon added.

Gates described as "ridiculous" any notion that Fallon's departure signals the United States is planning to go to war with Iran. And he said "there is a misperception" that Fallon disagrees with the administration's approach to Iran.

"I don't think there were differences at all," Gates added.

As ThinkProgress notes, Fallon opposed the "surge" in Iraq and has consistently battled the Bush administration to avoid a confrontation with Iran, calling officials' saber-rattling "not helpful." Privately, he vowed that an attack on Iran "will not happen on my watch."

A blockbuster Esquire article published last week predicted that Fallon would be removed to make way for a general who was more "pliable" to war with Iran:

If, in the dying light of the Bush administration, we go to war with Iran, it'll all come down to one man. If we do not go to war with Iran, it'll come down to the same man. He is that rarest of creatures in the Bush universe: the good cop on Iran, and a man of strategic brilliance. His name is William Fallon, although all of his friends call him "Fox," which was his fighter-pilot call sign decades ago. [...]

Just as Fallon took over Centcom last spring, the White House was putting itself on a war footing with Iran. Almost instantly, Fallon began to calmly push back against what he saw as an ill-advised action. Over the course of 2007, Fallon's statements in the press grew increasingly dismissive of the possibility of war, creating serious friction with the White House.

Last December, when the National Intelligence Estimate downgraded the immediate nuclear threat from Iran, it seemed as if Fallon's caution was justified. But still, well-placed observers now say that it will come as no surprise if Fallon is relieved of his command before his time is up next spring, maybe as early as this summer, in favor of a commander the White House considers to be more pliable. If that were to happen, it may well mean that the president and vice-president intend to take military action against Iran before the end of this year and don't want a commander standing in their way.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) quickly released a statement: "I am concerned that the resignation of Admiral William J. Fallon, commander of all U.S. forces in the Middle East and a military leader with more than three decades of command experience, is yet another example that independence and the frank, open airing of experts' views are not welcomed in this Administration."

More from AP:

Fallon has had a 41-year Navy career. He took the Central Command post on March 16, 2007, succeeding Army Gen. John Abizaid, who retired. Fallon previously served as commander of U.S. Pacific Command.

President Bush issued a statement saying that Fallon "has served our Nation with great distinction for forty years. He is an outstanding sailor -- and he made history as the first naval officer to serve as commander of Central Command. "

Gates said that until a permanent replacement is nominated and confirmed by the Senate, Fallon's place will be taken by his top deputy, Army Lt. Gen. Martin Dempsey.

The secretary called Fallon a very able military strategist and said his advice will be missed at the Pentagon.

"I think this is a cumulative kind of thing," said Gates, speaking of the circumstances leading up to Fallon's decision. "It isn't the result of any one article or any one issue."

"As I say, the notion that this decision portends anything in terms of change in Iran policy is, to quote myself, 'ridiculous,' " he said.

I'd invite those overly partisan supporters of this or that Democratic candidate - the ones who say that if their woman or man doesn't get the nomination, they won't support the nominee - to reflect very carefully on what a McCrazy presidency will mean versus an Obama or Clinton one.

Simply put, we cannot afford another Republican in the White House.

Hillary voted against Fallon on Iran so what's your point? She is going to reverse her 100% AIPAC record once in power?

And most of them will not be posted. Lately they've been dumping a lot of posts. I'll be lucky if I see this one.

I've been a long time poster here, and I've been slowly seeing Huffpo loose it's members but it seems like within the last few weeks this site is rapidly going down hill. It used to be a place to discuss events, now its more like a cork board for notes. By the time it's posted your about ready to log off, let alone read any responses. If it gets any worse it won't be much different than every other online newspaper, except online newspapers have letters to the editor.

It seems that whenever some truth is told about dear old Israel the post is thrown into the shit can. It's bad enough that the MSM never questions the murdering IDF or moans very long for the Palestinian men ,women, and children butchered by the Israeli fascists supported and funded by the greatest war criminals in the world but let one Israeli get whacked and we hear about it for weeks on CNN.

I’d like to see Clinton, Obama and MnCain grilled in detail regarding our policy towards Iran and how we’re going to move forward in Iraq and Afghanistan as well The cost, the time frame, the contractors, the whole shebang. We deserve no less than some specific answers that at least show a certain level of understanding on these issues, and I can’t believe the media hasn’t gone there in the over 20 debates that we’ve had thus far.

On the Kyl Lieberman Iran amendment -which some view as a further step towards war with Iran - the voting record of the current nominees is there for all to see.
Clinton voted for it, while both Barack Obama and John McCain missed the vote.

I don’t know how someone who is making the war in Iraq the biggest issue of their campaign can miss a vote that might potentially expand that war into Iran, or at the least will have a major impact in our dialog with Iran in the future. Even if we aren’t going to war with Iran, missing the vote is not acceptable for someone making the war in Iraq THE major issue in their campaign to be president. It show’s a willingness to play politics in a way that is disconcerting at best.

Thank you, thank you Admiral Fallon for you have saved us from a war with Iran!!!!
We can never repay you for this good deed. May this unfit squirt in the White House
grow a brain and see what he has done to this country. He should be prosecuted as
a traitor and all the DEM senators/congressmen, who don't reign him too!

Don't count your blessing yet. Old Chimpy will have 8.5 months after ADMIRAL Fallon retires during which to attach Iran. Hopefully, his stance against any attack on Iran has adequately raised our nation's awareness of Chimpy's blatant stupidity.

Pax.

We are the ones that must stop this administration from attacking Iran. Congress has shown they lack the courage necessary.

The endless parade of military leaders who have left during this administration clearly shows there is great disagreement going on with what Bush and Cheney are doing. The majority of the Nation are question what is going on.

Now is the time to demand that the people be heard. They are not going to attack Iran under the watch of the people. We cannot let this madness continue.

Admiral Fallon called Bush's boy in Iraq, Gen Patreus, "an kissing little chicken shit". When I read that, I knew that the Admiral's days were numbered. Since Bush has come along, the only thing that is tolerated in the officer's corp are sycophants and toad eaters.

More than 40 years of active military service from Admiral Fallon. It has to be maddening to have a moronic civilian bip along and second guess, then ignore his judgment. As with General Shinsiki, Admiral Fallon will undoubtedly be proven correct. Once again....At what cost?

Are they really that crazy as to think they can actually get away with starting another war now with our troops so stretched as they are and against a country that actually has a capable military. Last time I checked Iran has not been suffering from a decade of embargo and UN sanctions such as those that really did cripple Iraq.

If they believed that the Iraqi's would greet us as liberators with flowers, I guess they think the Iranians will be waving silk banners of welcome. Actually they'll be launching Silk Worm missiles. What will be the American public's response when instead of 3500 casualties over a few years it's that many when one of those $Million dollar missiles parks a $5 Billion Air Craft Carrier or a couple of $Billion Cruise Missile Ships on the bottom of the Persian Gulf. Or maybe they intend to open the war with the genocidal use of “tactical” nuclear weapons. Gods Help Us All.

A reminder regarding the positions' of our leading Presidential candidates on the Kyl-Lieberman amendment which, while toned down from its original war mongering stance, is still viewed as the likely "green light" that will be used for an attack on Iran:

Obama - No Vote
Clinton - Aye
McCain - No Vote

Great Leaders All!

Iran would attack our sitting ducks-the troops in Iraq and Afganistan! Its insanity.

Any military man/woman knows to attack Iran while troops are in theatre right next door is certain death for hundreds/thousands of our troops stationed in that region.

Anyone with brains knowsour troops should retreat to a neutral site-Kuwait-then return after we attack.

Brains-thats asking far too much. The current corporation in the WH needs oil at $150 before Jan 2009.

Get ready for a complicit MSM to parrot all the administrations talking points, just like 2003 all over again.

They will get away with just like they got away with invading Iraq by blaming 9/11. Don't be surprised if we get another terrorist attack in the U.S. that they then will blame on Iran so Americans will clamor for war. An agente provocateur should understand the principle very well.

Usually I berate the Military leadership for acting without thinking so I must rebut my obvious error in saying the Military brass are oblivious to obnoxious and wrong wars. Apparently there are some Generals/Admirals with a conscious and I congratulate one of the few, Admiral Fallon as a vet I do salute you and hope more independent minded souls are out there. The war was wrong like Vietnam and it can never be won regardless of what our chief decider Bush and his henchmen say. Time for change in America with all the Old political machines put out the door as was Huey Long from a state that in the past had very few honest politicians. Now these political crony's inhabit all states and must be voted out.
CHANGE, vote for Obama. Can he do worse than Hillary and what we now have. Power corrupts and the Spiters in America now rule the roost.

Hi,

It is very distressing to read that apparently Admiral Fallon is not welcome in the Bush Administration and that the Bush Administration is apparently determined to go to war with Iran.

Will the Congress allow the Bush Administration to go to war with Iran?

Will the Republicans in Congress support the Bush Administration in its apparent quest to go to war with Iran?

Exactly who in the Bush Administration is pushing for war with Iran and why?

What will be the Bush Administration's plan to wage this war and what are the objectives, what will be the Bush Administration's plan for leaving Iran and how will the US Army deal with Iran's supporters in Iraq?
