WASHINGTON — Hillary Rodham Clinton said Tuesday she disagrees with Geraldine Ferraro, one of her fundraisers and the 1984 vice presidential candidate, for suggesting that Barack Obama only achieved his status in the presidential race because he's black. In a brief interview with The Associated Press, Clinton was questioned about Ferraro's remarks.

The Obama campaign has called on the New York senator to denounce them.

Ferraro told the Daily Breeze of Torrance, Calif.: "If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position. And if he was a woman (of any color) he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept."

The newspaper published the interview last Friday.

Clinton said, "I do not agree with that," and later added, "It's regrettable that any of our supporters _ on both sides, because we both have this experience _ say things that kind of veer off into the personal."

"We ought to keep this on the issues. there are differences between us" on approaches to health care, energy, experience.

Ferraro is a former New York congresswoman and was Walter Mondale's running mate when he was the Democratic presidential nominee in 1984. She has endorsed Clinton and raised money for her campaign.

Obama called Ferraro's comments "patently absurd."

"I don't think Geraldine Ferraro's comments have any place in our politics or in the Democratic Party. They are divisive. I think anybody who understands the history of this country knows they are patently absurd," he told the Allentown Morning Call. "And I would expect that the same way those comments don't have a place in my campaign they shouldn't have a place in Senator Clinton's either."

Obama senior adviser David Axelrod said Ferraro should be removed from her position with the Clinton campaign because of her comments.

"The bottom line is this, when you wink and nod at offensive statements, you're really sending a signal to your supporters that anything goes," Axelrod said in a conference call with reporters on Tuesday.

"There's no other way to send a serious signal that you want to police the tone of this campaign," he added. "And if you don't do those things then you are simply adding to the growing compendium of evidence that you really are encouraging that."

Axelrod said Clinton has encountered problems because people view her as a "divisive and polarizing force."

"The best way to address those concerns is to not allow divisiveness and negativity to flourish among your supporters," he said. "And this is an opportunity for her to address that."

Jan Schakowsky, an Obama supporter and Illinois congresswoman, said Democrats should not tear each other down, and instead focus on defeating John McCain, the Republican nominee-in-waiting.

"I respect every person's right to promote his or her candidate, but any and all remarks that diminish Senator Obama's candidacy because of his race are completely out of line," Schakowsky said on the conference call.

Ferraro also said Obama has it easy because of a "very sexist media."

"I think what America feels about a woman becoming president takes a very secondary place to Obama's campaign _ to a kind of campaign that it would be hard for anyone to run against," she said. "For one thing, you have the press, which has been uniquely hard on her. It's been a very sexist media. Some just don't like her. The others have gotten caught up in the Obama campaign."

Last week, a former adviser to Obama resigned after calling Clinton "a monster."

This tops everything. What country does Ferraro live in? To say that anyone is "lucky" to be black in the USA is just bizarre.
I agree with everyone who has responded to this. The Cinton "campaign" has to be ended. Before PA.
PLEASE. Gore! Biden! Richardson!
We are drowning in BS because of Billary's drive for power. With each passing day, she is losing the election for the democrats.
The fact: If the big boys don't endorse Obama BEFORE PA, and send this awful campaign packing,
I think that millions of voters will lose all faith in the Democratic Party.
I'm one of them.

The Clinton team has convinced themselves that Obama is a flash in the pan and that the mania will soon wear off when his fans wake from their hypnotic state - they are of course wrong (not to mention condescending) - this is yet another example of how out of step Hillary is with the majority of voters.

This is a classic racist remark. Dismissing the accomplishments of blacks as some type of affirmative action handout. Now she is trying to personalize it between her and Obama but her remark should be offensive to all minorities. Keep it up Clinton and you are going to run a lot of moderate blacks straight out of the democratic party forever.

The rhymes with witch -is back in full force-- remember how Barbara Bush got in trouble over that statement back in '84'-- now with SNL proclaiming how great it is to actually be a "rhymes with witch"--Barbara Bush has been vindicated-- and actually Barbara has more humor than all the SNL cast combined..

Geraldine Ferraro is not doing clinton any favours . . . and she really seems like a racist . . hillary wouldn't be where she is if she wasn't married to bill . .. that is a fact . . . the sooner billary is out of this race the better .. .

I was going to comment about the fact that Ferraro said Hillary has not told her to shut up yet - thus proving that Hillary supports this racist strategy, but no one will ever get to see it, so why bother.

Just what the Clinton campaign needs: another arrogant Lady Macbeth shrieking her sense of entitlement while riding her broomstick.

The Clinton's have been at this for 16+ years, seeing everyone as their adversary and fighting tooth and nail for power.
They trot their dogs out there to take shots and dictate the conversation.

enough already - barak stop responding to her like she matters..

Talk to the people, about the war, about the falling U.S Dollar and how it is costing us more and more every day. About plans to invest in the U.S.A. instead of sending our money to China.

How about a being like Kennedy and saying in 10 years, we will phase out cars that burn petroleum !

Get back to the vision and let the Clinton's have the kitchen sink of crap they insist in wallowing in.

As some one stated earlier, just remember who started this race crap. Nothing happens in the Clinton camp without her stamp of approval. She knows exactly what is going and who is saying what.

I honestly had never given Sen. Obama's race a second thought, now I have to hear about it 2 or 3 times a week.

I hope the Clintons are proud of themselves.

Nothing particularly surprising in GF's comments. It was a tourettes-like blast from the mouth of one of the many Northern "big-tent" Dems who are only inclusive and progressive when their darker-hued minions go to the polls like obedient trolls. But put these 70s-80s era Dems in a position when they aren't dictating terms to we sheep and all of a sudden their inner Rove comes barfing out.

Gerry Ferraro is what her parents and her parents' parents were- populist Northerners from Bensonhurst with a good bit of goopy, racist residue left. Flotsam that floats right to the surface if you squeeze the bilge-pump hard enough.

Geraldine got one thing right, (if the quote is attributed correctly) "don't antagonize people like [her]..." Problem is- (give her a lie detector, she'll admit it) they were antagonized as soon as they saw a Black guy hitting it out of the park. I fear more than a few Pennsylvania Dems are Geraldine-type "Democrats": ABOs -- Anybody But Obama.

Booooo... Hillary, you and your "politics of personal destruction" wrecking crew may just have screwed the pooch again, like you did with Health Care in '93-- only this time with vastly greater consequences. Thanks, Hil! Every night. right before wifey hits the Xanex, McCain and the RNC pray for your continued health and "success". McCain can just re-run Ferraro sound bites and Hillary ads in the General. Sweeeet.

More evidence of the chaotic Clinton organization - they can't keep a second rate political hack like Ferraro (who got her ass kicked twice in runs for the senate besides her embarrassing performance as a veep candidate) - from shooting her mouth off . . .

Ferraro is a symbol of the failed politics of the past and Hillary is just the latest version of the same.

Obama will be the Kerry of 2008. He will lose this spectacularly and you Obama supporters will only have yourselves to blame. He just had to go against his own better judgement and jumped into the race knowing folks would rather vote for a black guy over a woman because it is perfect cover for their sexism and white guilt. He couldn't have choosen a better time to run. In fact, it seems like now is his Only opportunity to run. I doubt we will have another possible female candidate for years to come. And when we do, just know that a minority guy will come along to tear her down. I can only hope that at that time, he is at least gay and a racial minority.

Folks are so in denial about what this race says about democrats. They don't want a woman and they don't want anyone to think they might be racist. Perfect storm for Obama.

why does everyone get upset when the truth is told. We all know that Biden has much more experience than OBAMA and yet if they were both the same color white OBAMA wouldn't have a chance.

the huffpo headline reads

'Ferraro Warns: Don't "Antagonize People Like Me" '

but the "quote" is nowhere to be found in the posting -

just exactly who are ferraro's "people" (besides bill &hill, obviously), how do they define themselves and who's interests are they serving ???
