Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., suggested Sen. Barack Obama only achieved his status in the presidential campaign because he's black. WASHINGTON — Hillary Rodham Clinton said Tuesday she disagrees with Geraldine Ferraro, one of her fundraisers and the 1984 vice presidential candidate, for suggesting that Barack Obama only achieved his status in the presidential race because he's black. In a brief interview with The Associated Press, Clinton was questioned about Ferraro's remarks.

The Obama campaign has called on the New York senator to denounce them.

Ferraro told the Daily Breeze of Torrance, Calif.: "If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position. And if he was a woman (of any color) he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept."

The newspaper published the interview last Friday.

Clinton said, "I do not agree with that," and later added, "It's regrettable that any of our supporters _ on both sides, because we both have this experience _ say things that kind of veer off into the personal."

"We ought to keep this on the issues. there are differences between us" on approaches to health care, energy, experience.

Ferraro is a former New York congresswoman and was Walter Mondale's running mate when he was the Democratic presidential nominee in 1984. She has endorsed Clinton and raised money for her campaign.

Obama called Ferraro's comments "patently absurd."

"I don't think Geraldine Ferraro's comments have any place in our politics or in the Democratic Party. They are divisive. I think anybody who understands the history of this country knows they are patently absurd," he told the Allentown Morning Call. "And I would expect that the same way those comments don't have a place in my campaign they shouldn't have a place in Senator Clinton's either."

Obama senior adviser David Axelrod said Ferraro should be removed from her position with the Clinton campaign because of her comments.

"The bottom line is this, when you wink and nod at offensive statements, you're really sending a signal to your supporters that anything goes," Axelrod said in a conference call with reporters on Tuesday.

"There's no other way to send a serious signal that you want to police the tone of this campaign," he added. "And if you don't do those things then you are simply adding to the growing compendium of evidence that you really are encouraging that."

Axelrod said Clinton has encountered problems because people view her as a "divisive and polarizing force."

"The best way to address those concerns is to not allow divisiveness and negativity to flourish among your supporters," he said. "And this is an opportunity for her to address that."

Jan Schakowsky, an Obama supporter and Illinois congresswoman, said Democrats should not tear each other down, and instead focus on defeating John McCain, the Republican nominee-in-waiting.

"I respect every person's right to promote his or her candidate, but any and all remarks that diminish Senator Obama's candidacy because of his race are completely out of line," Schakowsky said on the conference call.

Ferraro also said Obama has it easy because of a "very sexist media."

"I think what America feels about a woman becoming president takes a very secondary place to Obama's campaign _ to a kind of campaign that it would be hard for anyone to run against," she said. "For one thing, you have the press, which has been uniquely hard on her. It's been a very sexist media. Some just don't like her. The others have gotten caught up in the Obama campaign."

Last week, a former adviser to Obama resigned after calling Clinton "a monster."

Gerri is an ass! Her comments are the equivalent of someone saying that the only reason SHE got where SHE is, is b/c she's a woman! Or, Hillary is only where she is b/c of her husband. Or her dyke support!

Guess she's been around Hillary too long -- she's developed the Clinton-narcissistic-delusion syndrome -- the belief that someone is due something just b/c they want it.

The Clintons' refusal to dismiss her from their campaign also highlights just how much like Cheney & Bush they really are. Bill & Hillary are displaying the same stubborn incalcitrance that Dick & George show towards Congress & the media -- is this how they intend to govern?!

Put up or shut up, Hillary! You got NOTHING!

So what was it? A threat to not mess with Ferrero? What can she do now that she has reminded people she's not dead yet? Also who is she lumping together with her in the "people like me"? A racist remark like she insists on defending goes to show what I have always heard.....low grade sleezy people hang together so they can talk trash about other people to make them feel better about what sore sleeze bombs they are. If they try hard enough to bring other people down to their level then that means power and control to them. Sad but this mess makes the many faces of Hillary and the multipersonality thing look tame. But the clintons have always used another person to say the crap/trash/lies so they can say "I never said that" Hillary did that in S. Carolina remember?

From Maureen Dowd's column today:

"Obama acknowledged when he arrived in the Senate that he got more attention, his big book deal and his celebrity, because he is not white. He was only the third black senator elected since Reconstruction.

But as he campaigned here Tuesday, he was outraged at Ferraro’s comments. “They are divisive,” he said. “I think anybody who understands the history of this country knows they are patently absurd.”

So, gee, come to find out, Ferraro was only stating what Obama himself has acknowledged. If you read the profile on him in The New York Times this past weekend, it quoted him, making fun of himself about how easy everything had been on him when he went to the Senate, and how with the publishing of his book, and winning a grammy, that he had hardly had time to create any law. The quote is there in the paper.

Geraldine Ferraro is not racist. She was making an observation.

WOW.
I just read this link below, and it bears repeating. Ferraro said the exact same thing about Jesse Jackson in 1988 that she's said about Obama. http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0308/A_Ferraro_flashback.html

With affirmative action in place, it seems there is no complete amalgamation of American population. So, there is minority and majority communities distinctly identified not only by the color of skin, and also by political and legislative treatment. It does not automatically imply racial bias, and majority may like to have a white elected as president. While the pattern of voting for Obama does not indicate that whites are biased, it does indicate that blacks are biased because of their overwhelming support. It may be just the zeal of the black community seeing that they came across a rare opportunity to have a black president, and it may not after all be a racial feeling.

Here we go with the Bigotry attacks. Hillary will never learn. America can we move on without bigoted attacks. Now, they are blaming Barack Obama for saying it is wrong to attack him this way. What is wrong with America.

The world is watching America. How can we move on by using bigotry.

America when will it stop.

It is over.

Looks like the Clinton campaign is desperately set to have their Jesse Jackson "Hymie town"moment any time soon, and Geraldine Ferraro may have just delivered that moment. They're not only seeing how far they can push it with their racially charged attacks on Obama, but they are insulting just about every one's intelligence by doing so. However this Clinton episode has been good for all us to unveil all of the closeted Dixiecrats lurking in the party. They have laid their crosses and torches on the table and have removed their corporate hoods for all of us to see.Boy! is it ever ugly. I'm beginning to wonder if the Clinton campaign is turning into the Clinton mickey mouse fan club on a bad acid trip? Why are her supporters so willing to "bow" down and beg for dynasty? And why is it that to question or to truly criticize these economic royalists is to commit treason? Yet, it's acceptable for them and her supporters to boost the worth of the republican candidate. Perhaps the Clintons and their supporters need to toughen up. They are a little thin skinned. She cries about the media and the media bends, I didn''t see any one crying for Moseley Braun. She was a woman and black. Or let's take Kucinich, he was sidelined. Where was the outrage for either one of them? Besides haven't we had enough donkey headed stubbornness these past eight years? We should refresh the political scene and move forward. We need to turn a new page and see a new face. The nineties are over people, it's a new century. Unless you live in Ohio and don't worry the new millennium will be there soon in about ten years.

Another non-issue issue... but WOW! How many gauntlets can be thrown down? We are at a point where a democratic candidate (who is really a republican), Hillary Clinton, running a campaign that trumps one racist remark with another. Geraldine WAS a 'token' woman, and she admits this, but Obama is running for President, not VP!!! Also, such a subtle sociological analysis should be saved for elsewhere.... what was the point of commenting on his race??? She basically stated that he is a unqualified black man, being given a free lunch.... wow. If she wanted to bring up sexism, fine, but she didn't! Also Hillary has been given a very easy time in the media, especially considering she is who she is. To go at something so insane, can only mean one thing - this is all ON PURPOSE... which just makes me say WOW yet again.... WOW!!!
.

For me, we haven't had a democrat run for president since Eugene M that wasn't ashamed of progressive issues or peace. Hillary and Obama can't and won't do anything for you!!! You have to MAKE them, and we don't... many of us are democratic voters who allow ourselves to be pandered to and have our vote politicked, rather than progressive activists who get stuff done.

This was a clear test. Either:

1. She is of strong character, worthy of the Commander in Chief mantle, and is INTENTIONALLY maliciously shielding her disdain for Ferraro's comments to support Gerry (or her message?) by cleverly using an equivocal term such as "disagree" instead of something more unequivocal OR;

2. She is of weak character, unworthy of CIC, and is incapable of either understanding how hateful and hurtful Ferraro's comments are to millions of Americans or unable/willing to call out a powerful supporter who made an inexcusable remark at the moment when it is required.

Either way, tomorrow is too late. She failed. Hillary Clinton is either too slick or too weak to serve as president.

It is interesting to note that this is not the first time Ms Ferraro has made this argument - back in February in another interview she made the same incindiary comments about Obama - practically verbatim. I read this as indicating that far from feeling outraged and surprised at the outcry around her comments, she has been repeating the same line, waiting for some to take the 'race' bait, so that she could become righteously indignant and attempt to advance an image of Obama as fragile and overly-sensitive'. Perhaps I am cynical, but it seems to be very cleverly crafted strategy to have the voting electorate tire of the whole 'race' issue and lose interest in Obama accordingly. How very sad.

seattle --

Unfortunately, the Clintons will spin their defeat as the result of any number of misfortunes, none of which will implicate THEM as the main culprits. Narcissists do this all the time -- they place the blame for any and all ills on something or someone other than themselves. That way, they are never in the wrong -- they are always perfect, or innocent, whichever works best in a given situation.

Bill's already laid the ground work for November's impending disaster by stating (just before the Texas primary) that if Hillary didn't win, it would be the VOTERS' fault, not her's or his'!

The Democrats are the sorriest bunch of losers that ever was if they allow these two old scam artists to bully them into losing yet another election -- and for what? Just so THEIR MAJESTIES can pursue their own selfish destinies?

That's the worst reason of all!

The Democratic Party self immolated, just like it does every four years. It's not the fault of any one person or candidate. It's the nature of the beast.

No kidding. And, it will be the Republicans who voted for their man in the democratic nominee process and who are using their Rovian or isn't it really, Goebellian, tactics to beat the dems before the election since they did not have a chance to do it in the general election they screwed the country up so badly.

I think that what Geraldine and Hillary both fail to grasp is that the media has been giving Hillary a hard time - not because she's a woman - but because she's Hillary Clinton...

Both Ferraro and Clinton see themselves as the 21st Century version of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony. The irony is that both of them owe their careers to men, Ferraro to Mondale for stupidly choosing her as VP nominee and Clinton so obviously would never rank higher than a member of Congress without Bill's last name. Ferraro was twice rejected by NY state Democrats to run for the US Senate, showing what a poor choice Mondale made in choosing her.

I see Clinton more as a style-less Eva Peron than Golda Meier or Margaret Thatcher, two women who rose to power on their own abilities without ever once complaining about "sexism".

Clinton is doing more damage to feminism than she can imagine, and the next time a woman runs for president, this time one who is running on her own merits and experiences, she will see that the press and public will be more embracing. It's not that people don't want A woman president. It's that they don't want THIS woman.

Now I want to just see what the DNC has to say about this one. It is time they step in and tell Hillary her time is up! And I'm really tired of them directing their comments about "negative campaigning" to both candidates. They better start pointing the figure where it needs to be pointed and that ain't Sen. Obama. This talk they are so concerned about division of this party, well just exactly what do they plan to do about it?

According to the Clinton Campaign it's okay to call OBAMA a NIGGAR. If the Obama campaign complains they are playing the race card. Enough of this already.

When the Democrats refused to stand up for minority voting rights in Florida in 2000 (when policemen were stationed at black polling stations to intimidate them) and in 2004 (when Jeb Bush sent state troopers to the homes of elderly blacks under the guise of verifying their eligibility) it was emblematic of the party's own racial views and their taking the black vote for granted. I would not expect them to chastise Hillary because they are like she is: lacking in integrity and ethics. So don't hold your breath waiting for them to be fair or even to do what's best for party and country. Nancy Pelosi had the gall to imply that both Barack and Hillary are running negative campaigns when it is only Hillary. I guess that was Pelosi's attempt to seem fair, but it didn't look that way to all of us. Regardless of who becomes president, I'd like to see Pelosi, Reid, and a few other Bush-enablers pushed out. If Barack loses to Hilary, I believe aggrieved Obama supporters will either stay home or they'll vote against Hillary causing the Democratic party to lose not only the presidency, but will garner fewer republican seats at the local and national levels.
