Geraldine Ferarro is seen on Capitol Hill in Washington in this June 21, 2001 file photo. on Tuesday, March 11, 2008, Ferraro, a fundraiser for Democratic Presidential hopeful, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., suggested Sen. Barack Obama only achieved his status in the presidential campaign because he's black. WASHINGTON — Hillary Rodham Clinton said Tuesday she disagrees with Geraldine Ferraro, one of her fundraisers and the 1984 vice presidential candidate, for suggesting that Barack Obama only achieved his status in the presidential race because he's black. In a brief interview with The Associated Press, Clinton was questioned about Ferraro's remarks.

The Obama campaign has called on the New York senator to denounce them.

Ferraro told the Daily Breeze of Torrance, Calif.: "If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position. And if he was a woman (of any color) he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept."

The newspaper published the interview last Friday.

Clinton said, "I do not agree with that," and later added, "It's regrettable that any of our supporters _ on both sides, because we both have this experience _ say things that kind of veer off into the personal."

"We ought to keep this on the issues. there are differences between us" on approaches to health care, energy, experience.

Ferraro is a former New York congresswoman and was Walter Mondale's running mate when he was the Democratic presidential nominee in 1984. She has endorsed Clinton and raised money for her campaign.

Obama called Ferraro's comments "patently absurd."

"I don't think Geraldine Ferraro's comments have any place in our politics or in the Democratic Party. They are divisive. I think anybody who understands the history of this country knows they are patently absurd," he told the Allentown Morning Call. "And I would expect that the same way those comments don't have a place in my campaign they shouldn't have a place in Senator Clinton's either."

Obama senior adviser David Axelrod said Ferraro should be removed from her position with the Clinton campaign because of her comments.

"The bottom line is this, when you wink and nod at offensive statements, you're really sending a signal to your supporters that anything goes," Axelrod said in a conference call with reporters on Tuesday.

"There's no other way to send a serious signal that you want to police the tone of this campaign," he added. "And if you don't do those things then you are simply adding to the growing compendium of evidence that you really are encouraging that."

Axelrod said Clinton has encountered problems because people view her as a "divisive and polarizing force."

"The best way to address those concerns is to not allow divisiveness and negativity to flourish among your supporters," he said. "And this is an opportunity for her to address that."

Jan Schakowsky, an Obama supporter and Illinois congresswoman, said Democrats should not tear each other down, and instead focus on defeating John McCain, the Republican nominee-in-waiting.

"I respect every person's right to promote his or her candidate, but any and all remarks that diminish Senator Obama's candidacy because of his race are completely out of line," Schakowsky said on the conference call.

Ferraro also said Obama has it easy because of a "very sexist media."

"I think what America feels about a woman becoming president takes a very secondary place to Obama's campaign _ to a kind of campaign that it would be hard for anyone to run against," she said. "For one thing, you have the press, which has been uniquely hard on her. It's been a very sexist media. Some just don't like her. The others have gotten caught up in the Obama campaign."

Last week, a former adviser to Obama resigned after calling Clinton "a monster."

Ferraro is just a messenger for the clintons who are so desperate to win that they are using GOP tactics of campaigning. Ferraro is a racist. period end of story. she can try to spin it but she is lame and the fact that clinton isn't firing her is a shame. by the way what is it with the old generation that is soooo obssesed with race? wake up old lady, wipe your eyes and look at america. it isn't the 99% white country anymore. It's brown... so most of us actually don't even care that obama is black. he's just better than you and your candidate.

It surprises me if I read voters and people in America are making a "big deal" out race. Wait a minute if America wanted to stay "pink" as they usually delude themselves they are white, then they should have stayed in Europe in the 1st place. After all it is the only known place where caucasians can claim they hail from.
Otherwise, let then shout up! and cup the f...ck on! because the moment they decided to usurp the rights of the red indians who, were the indegenes of that land they named "America", then of course it is open to all. More so, when they blatantly maimed ,raped used as work horses people of African decent then, they ought to realise that the decendants of those people have the same rights as the "wicked masters" decendants. This is not for some of the world about Barack Obama but it is about practising what you preach and steal with. After all, he can claim to be "pink" and "brown" at the same time because there is no law that bars him from claiming same. With hind sight, he has the chance to be anything and part of any race he so chooses. Who made the law that once any person is a "cross offspring" they are more of the African side than the other? Pure racist bigots, go sleep America will change for the better!

And just for the record....some of us "old people" don't agree with her either. I don't believe they are racist (the Clintons) which makes what they are doing even worse. They are playing on the lowest common denominator, pushing every racist button they can and hoping it will get stuck. Sadly, I see that in some quarter it has but in the end they can not be allowed to win. Barack Obama is the finest candidate I can remember in my voting lifetime which goes back to just about Shrillary's voting lifetime. So with each new surrogate or slimer they inject into this race we the people don't rail against they will find more to shill for them.
Karl Rove is watching Rome burn and dancing!

Hillary has already said she did not agree with Ferraro. Ferraro laughed at the notion that she's a surrogate and said, "Hillary can't rein me in."

She not only is not backing down, but she went on Fox news and defended her remarks. She says that she merely was saying that race is playing a part of his success in the same way that her gender played a part of her own success as VP candidate.

Ferraro is not a racist.

She is intellectually inconsistent and has arrived at her opinion through incomplete analysis. Yes, Sen Obama might be where he is because of his race, but that is not the only reason. And yes, Rep Ferraro might have been the VP nominee because of her gender, but that was not the only reason.

Invariably there is a moment in time when a person is put into a position to do great things. Ultimately it is up to that individual to deliver.

This from the woman who gave Reagan a 49 state mandate.

She is the epitome of affirmative action

And it makes me very sad that we are seeing blatant racism in the democratic party.

It's like the dixiecrat wing is back and in full effect.

It's not Dixiecrat. Ferarro is a Yankee. It's a nation wide thing. I'll bet there are a lot of people thinking what she's saying, whether it's true or not. But it's at least as bad, if not worse, than Clinton being called a monster, and she should remove herself from the Clinton campaign. And supporters on BOTH sides need to learn a little verbal self restraint.

"I've already said my piece on Geraldine Ferraro but where is the 'Don't antagonize people like me' remark come from? There is no mention of that quote in the article?"

This is all I was able to find. Apparently she said this on Fox News (where she is introduced as a "FOX News Policital Analyst") (a Dem working for FOX?... oh yea, a DLC Dem, like Harold Ford Jr.)

(at this point, the cheers of "O-BA-MA" rise up in the back of my head)

Please follow the link, because the story gets even better. After telling her audience that she's fought for civil rights for years, she goes on to make the kind of "some of my best friends are black" kind of rascist statements that reveal the kind of denial she's in.

I have a feeling this is going to get really ugly. I also have a feeling it's premeditated. It's very much like a Frank Luntz, Lee Atwater technique.

It's goal is to make Obama a black candidate. (see Geraldine's earlier statements about Jesse Jackson)

It is literally DIVIDE AND CONQUER.

**Ferraro responds defiantly on the Fox News Channel**
Insists her comment was not racist, and is “absolutely offended” by the angry response she has received. Blames Obama campaign and David Axelrod for the response.

Denies being a Clinton campaign surrogate, and advises Obama “not to antagonize people like me,” because if he wins nomination he will want her to raise money on his behalf.

I spent some time looking for this, too, and I can't find it. It might be what she -- and Hillary -- are thinking, but I don't see any evidence of her saying it. Sometimes the HuffPost gets carried away in their headline banners. I wish they'd cool it a little.

"advises Obama "not to antagonize people like me," because if he wins nomination he will want her to raise money on his behalf."

She is so delusional! I think he's doing just fine in the money raising field. Over 1 million donors, 90% of whom donated less than $100?! I don't think he'll need her help whatsoever.

I predict that once he wins the nomination she'll be falling all over herself to explain that the comments came across wrong and it wasn't really what she meant, blah blah blah, so she can jump on his bandwagon.

When Obama brought out the old OKIE-DOKE and telling the black crowd in South Carolina not to be BAMBOOZLED, words used by Malcolm and Farrakhan to incite black crowds for years. the MSM gave Obama a pass. He was using the same speech in Mississippi a couple days ago, again the MSM never calls him on playing the race card. But when Hillary said LBJ passed civil rights the MSM claimed Hillary was playing the race card and dissing Dr. King.

Yes it IS interesting how this embarassment coincides with what seems to be this week's lovely new Clinton strategy- that "only blacks will vote for Obama".

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:01 AM on 03/12/2008

LOL yeah because Sen. Obama has such a hard time raising money for his campaign WITHOUT Ms. Ferraro! What a joke! I can just picture her twisting her wrinkled face in anger and spitting "You're going to be sorry you messed with me, boy!"

Apparently it has escaped Shrillary that a very big reason Bill won the presidency was because of the black vote that she seems so intent on chasing away from her campaign today through rampant racism and fear tactics.

Hillary does nothing without thorough calculation, and having an escape/blame/throwing someone under the bus plan firmly in place before letting it fly. So the remarks of this bitter old crone Ferraro have probably been bouncing around the Clinton campaign for weeks. Apparently, she's still under the impression that it's still 1984 when there was nothing non-PC about saying 'you're only the V.P. nominee because you're a woman'. But in 2008, it's VERY non-PC to say 'the only reason you're having such success in running for President is because you're black'.

This is the second time that Shrillary has let racist comments be part of her campaign and has done nothing about it. In S.C. when Bill compared Sen. Obama to Jesse Jackson, basically saying that the vote in that state could be chalked up to the fact that Jesse Jackson did well in S.C. too, but ended up not being a real, viable candidate. Shrillary failed to come out against these comments - OK, to a certain degree it's understandable. I mean, how is she supposed to ban her husband - a former President - from her campaign? But Ferraro? I guess Shrillary needs all the fundraising she can get, but this is ridiculous...

If Ferraro doesn't resign, it will confirm that the Clinton campaign openly embraces overt racism.
They are borrowing from the Bush strategy - divide and conquer. They want to make voters think it's all about blacks vs. whites, hoping all the whites will vote for Hillary. I have never seen anything so ignominious. The Clintonites are beginning to make Karl Rove look like Rebecca of Sunnybrook farm.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:17 AM on 03/12/2008

Oh they embrace it alright. Hillary's campaign manager is defending the comments!! And what was Hillary's response - "I don't agree with the comments", that's about as lame as it gets. I've said this already but will again, they are speaking to their racists base in PN, once again time to play the race card and this time lets throw in affirmative action we know how much white people loved that in PN.

Anyone out there still willing to vote for this women, you need to check "your" integrity meter.

I cannot understand your attitude to the truth of Geraldine's statement. If Obama was white would all of Bill and Hillary's black supporters have gone for him? Would Oprah have gone for him?
If your answer is yes then you are the blind leading the blind and both shall fall into the pit.The general election swift boats will eat you up and spit you out.
What Geraldine says is true but not politically correct. As journalists what is your responsibility ? To speak the truth or to speak PC? As for making Obama a black candidate ;ask the black people if he is a black candidate they will convince the still doubtful. But we must not talk about it? He then becomes the 500 lb gorilla in the living room. Is that what you want?

Are you saying they only went to him because he's black? Because if you believe that, I'm really sorry to tell you, that is a racist belief.

To dismiss any human being's achievements as only being caused by the color of their skin is racist, that is clearly racist.

Race is not the 500 lb gorilla in the room because the maority of us don't care about the color of someone's skin, just like we don't care about the color of someone's hair or eyes, this is not important!

What a bunch of bogus garbage. Obama is winning because he is the best candidate. Period.

Finally our country is showing that the content of one's character is what matters. Finally. And we can be proud of this. And Ferraro says that he's being adored because he's black???? It's like an episode of South Park. Clinton should renounce AND denounce Ferraro's comments.....but she won't.

Senator Obama without the color of his skin and his upbringing stripped has nothing to propel him to victory. He is a true pale empty shell.

I am an Obama supporter. Open minded, college educated, and expensive coffee drinker.
Geraldine Ferraro said and I paraphrase: Obama is only where he is, because he is black. He would not be where he is if he was a woman, or white, and he is lucky for who he is.
I would like to presume it not a racist statement. I think she is completely and utterly wrong. It is amazing for me to see how Clinton supporters are blown away by Senator Clinton’s persistent wins, no matter how many kitchen Sinks are thrown at him. They cannot understand how he can win, having no experience in a governor’s office as a spouse or as a first man in the white house. They really believe that he is winning because of foolish starry eyed 18 year old college kids, who are high jacking caucuses all across the country with strong armed tactics. They actually have bought into their own rhetoric of cultish stupid mesmerized followers. What was news to me was that Ms Ferraro believes him to be so unqualified a candidate that we, his supporters and followers are blinded by his story and race. The fact that he had an African father, he grew up in Hawaii and Indonesia, and he is black are his only qualifications based on which I or others like me support him. We are so blinded by the above facts that we choose to ignore that he has no other qualifications. According to Ms Ferraro, we have been duped by his color and background. If you take away his color, his background, and his father away and only leave behind a white man or woman with his remaining attributes, he or she would have no chance of winning.
So, my fellow starry eyed, foolish, young, rich, white collar professional cultish followers of Senator Obama here are the questions being raised by Congresswoman Geraldine Ferraro.
Take away his color, imagine him to be a white man or woman who grew up in a town called hope in Arkansas, and was raised by his parents and not his grandparents, his name is John Smith and not Barak Hussein Obama, who never travelled outside of the United States, would you still support him?
I want to give Ms Ferraro the benefit of the doubt and hence to the best of my understanding, this question can be answered only by Obama voters. Hillary supporters who are racists, sexist or bigots are out because they are definitely not supportive of him because of his color, gender or name. The ones who would not vote for him because of his name are also out. This is an exercise only for the so called open minded, change supporters, who call themselves beyond race and for his African American supporters. She is calling their support into question.
You are to imagine him to be of the same character, a senator from Illinois, who happens to be honest, holds the same policy positions, puts together the same grass root organization, has the same unparallel ability to inspire and make Americans proud to be who they are. He is young, 46, with appeal across the party lines, will attract independents, and has the potential to change the American landscape, tilting a generation of voters forever liberal and democratic. Ms Geraldine Ferraro asserts that given all these attributes, and stripping him of his color and background family story and he would have bowed out of the race by now, back in Chicago, with his Methodist blonde wife and his lovely daughters. Hillary Clinton would have pocketed the nomination and the democrats would be on their way to the white house.
If only Obama was white or a woman this race would be long over and a deserving woman, with 35 years of experience and solutions would be on her way to make history supported by 100 percent of women and not just 70 percent of over 50, more than half of white men, white and black voters all across America, Midwest, south, West including Hawaii, and Alaska. Senator Obama without the color of his skin and his upbringing stripped has nothing to propel him to victory. He is a pale empty shell.
Please post your responses taking into account all fore mentioned details. Thank you.

Look the woman is an idiot. That is all I can say. My preference for Obama comes from the fact that he has practical experience helping the working class. I find it astonishing that Clinton dismiss his work as a community activist. While she was on the board of Walmart he was working in Chicago to organize jobs, health care, day care etc for a hard hit community. I think this practical experience of what people need is a huge strength. The guy was editor of law review at Harvard and this is what he chose to do, it is beyond admirable. His constitutional law knowledge and anti war activism is also something I admire. In short he and I share common belief. Clinton, Ferraro et al and I do not have much in common and I'm a white woman. Go Figure.

An apple isn't that good of a fruit if it wasn't for its crisp texture and smooth crunchy surface.

WHAT PLANET ARE YOU FROM?

A person is a summary of their experiences brainiac.

If you want to pose as an Obama supporter so you can take a shot at him, fine its your post.

The fact is if anyone is a empty suite its Hillary.

She is the 08 version of BUSH.

Somehow in the 00 and 04 election BUSH was the Military experienced candidate even though its widely known that he likely was AWOL from the TEXAS air national guard.

He was "Perceived" as stronger on military even though the guy he ran against KERRY had a GD purple heart.

Hillary Clinton is not an accomplished individual.

She is not SELF MADE. She just happened to marry billyclint.

She isn't even genuine because she ran for Senate in New York, even though she had lived in ARKANSAS and was raised in ILLINOIS. Why did she choose New York? Why not Florida or Hawaii?

You can make up stuff all day about Obama but he does have the RIGHT experience for this time in our country's history.

He has a superior educaton.
He has passed legislation that protects the rights of the citizens.
He has the support of a new Movement that can change the country and world with a majority in the senate, house and the executive.
He is a uniter and if it were not for HILLARY's childish behavior would have united the DEM party.

So, please check ur facts buddy

How would your last paragraph stand up running again the other Obama who is black? Your framing the last paragraph shows just how far removed you are from the single, working, child rearing, discriminated against, women of America, and the unemployed family man with no college education, and no parents to pay for his medical insurance for his family; whom you would shift away from at Starbucks. For a college educated person you certainly know how to tilt. Instead of "happens to be" insert "appears to be";there is quite a difference which I am sure as a college educated person you would acknowledge. You are amazed at the thinking of the poor, unemployed white ,working classes, right? How far we have risen from our roots that the thinking of our parents is foreign to us.If what you say is true then what chance does Obama have against a white male republican? . But if Geraldine is speaking the truth how can someone be so attacked for telling the truth? We call that swiftboating.

I don't need anybody to make me proud to be an American...and Senator Obama's candidacy did not make me proud for the first time in my life that I am an American.

I will support the Democratic nominee in the November election, but I'm not supporting him in his run for the nomination. Hope and cries of "Yes we can!" are not substitutes for a plan for universal health insurance.

Senator Obama's talk of working to unite Americans would come off better if he showed some signs of being able to unite Democrats. He could start by working to tone down the abusive, vituperative tone of his supporters

Who gives a damn what this racist crone thinks?

Earth to Clinton: This race is OVUH!!! You are mathematically OUT of it!

If you try to steal it, you will destroy the Democratic Party and go down in history as the most divisive political figure since Joe McCarthy. But, from Dr. Dean at the top of the party on down, we are NOT going to let that happen. Why do you think Al Gore and Jimmy Carter haven't said anything about HRC's increasingly desperate acrimony yet? (Altho Speaker Pelosi has come close.) They are waiting to see if she really tries to "jump the shark" and steal this nomination. And you can bet that they will then step in with BOTH barrels!

So, to paraphrase one of my favorite movie lines, "Go ahead, Hillary. Make our day." You have run one of the most vile, divisive, racist, selfish campaigns in modern political history this side of Bush's SC race against McCain in 2000. I would so love to see you try to call our bluff and get hoisted by your own petard.

In fact, the only reason I think Clinton is staying in it is to try to sabotage Obama's fall run so as to preserve her opportunity to go after the nod in 2012. But, that's a futile effort too. No one will remember or care about her dumbass red phone ads or her bigoted advisers' statements when we hit October.

In the meantime, I can't wait until the August convention when I watch her give her obligatory runner-up speech so I can imitate my favorite baseball announcer, Hawk Harrelson, the TV voice of Sen. Obama's Chicago White Sox and say,

"She GONE!!!!!"

I'm heartily sick of her. If she means bigoted 65 and older women who won't vote for anyone who isn't them, I'm tired of her. Frankly if she means bigots period I've had more than had enough of her.

I've tried to be reasonable, tried to think about healthcare, the economy any number of (legitimate) reasons older women would have to vote for Hillary. I tried to factor in the vast majority who probably (wrongly) thought she was the best candidate. I've even tried to factor in those wonderful women (and men for that matter) who have supported Barack.

I've had enough. He's now won 2 of the whitest states this side of 1940s Germany without you. We need you, we'll miss you. If you're going to bigots we cannot endorse you. Sorry.

And no Geraldine this is not because you're white. It's because, despite some of us trying to give you even the slightest benefit of the doubt, you're clearly stupid. Good day, Madame, please take yourself somewhere where bigots are wanted. That is not here.

And the sheets are a-slipping. It is and has been ok for black people to vote for whites for decades but now that we have found the most exciting candidate in a generation, the most inspirational, the most decent, the most authentic, the most capable (as is evidenced by the way he has run his campaign), now that we have found this gem who just happens to be black, black people are to be maligned for supporting him? Please remember that Obama has earned the black vote. Clinton was leading 75-25 among African Americans. Blacks wondered whether he was black enough. And black people tend to be loyal to a fault and they "loved" Bill Clinton. Ask yourself what has happened to send them into Obama's arms. Ask yourself if Carol Mosely B got that support from blacks or women for that matter. Ask yourself whether Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton got the same level of support. I think you'll find that the answer is no. Obama is being supported by Blacks, Whites, Men and Women (and even children) because we perceive him to be the best candidate.

It really makeds me wonder what those supporting Hillary see in her. Is it shes female and you are too? Is it that you have false memories of the 90's? The dot comes made the black ink not Bill and the republicans can hardly wait until they can get to the slime and dirt Bill and Hil have been digging. To have someone come out and be racist and for you to still like Hillary because she doesn't agree with it but palns to keep her around even though Power got the boot for calling her a monster. I would rate a racist with little values a bit more sleezy slime poor excuse for a supporter but Barack has morals and he felt it best Power go than to have her represent anything about who he is. Why now would Hillary keep ferraro around then? To show what low quality humans are like? Those of you who continue to raise hell about those of us who see things a bit more clearly makes me believe if you believe it's OK for ferraro to be a rascist means you have that in common. To say such horrible things about the first black man capacble of being our president shames me to think she calls herself an american. Next she will say the blacks should still be slaves and you will say anything to get Hillary elected is fine with Hillary AND you! Sad I just hope you will come out into the light of hope and God and inspiration. God wanted those things too.

You didn't see that months ago? Of course they are either racist, bitter ,women, or racist-bitter-women. Who else would support her if they've been paying attention. Those that don't pay attention are supporting her name or McCain's R.

When Obama lost in N.H. he pulled the race card for the black crowds of South Carolina, bringing out the old OKIE-DOKE and BAMBOOZLED, words Malcolm X and Farrakhan used to incite black crowds for years, he did the same in Mississippi a couple days ago as well but the MSM never mentions this. If you want to talk about racism how about Obama getting 91% of the black vote in Mississippi.

I've already said my piece on Geraldine Ferraro but where is the ~Don't " antagonize people like me" ~ remark come from? There is no mention of that quote in the article?

It's the most important line in the whole piece, wherever it came from.

Every screaming Obama supporter has taken the bait, and in doing so HAS tended to antagonized the white folk Obama needs to win.

Be warned: bite that bait too many times and Obama will lose the general election (and could conceivably even lose the primary, by losing the popular vote, and with it the superdelegates). See my posts below for a fuller explanation.

Good call, I didn't see that remark mentioned in the article either.

That being said, I can't wait to see what other verbal shovels Ferraro uses to dig a deeper hole for the Clinton campaign.

It's in an interview that Ferraro gave on FoxNews about the whole controversy. Ben Smith at Politico has a post about it.

I am beyond disappointed with Geraldine Ferarro, a heroine of my youth, in fact I'm riding on the edge of disgust with this woman. This woman who made me believe that some day a woman really could be President of the USA. The utter Bullshit that came from her mouth the first ime astounds me!

"If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position. - If Sen. Obama was a white man, he'd have kicked ass so hard she would have had to drop out after SuperTuesday.

And if he was a woman (of any color) he would not be in this position. - Oh, really? Then explain to me how Sen. Hillary Clinton (a WOMAN of Merle Norman color) is in a simmilar, though not as advantageous, position?

I can't address her second set of remarks, they're just to hurtful to even think about.

It sucks when Heros fall from their pedastals.
