WASHINGTON — Hillary Rodham Clinton said Tuesday she disagrees with Geraldine Ferraro, one of her fundraisers and the 1984 vice presidential candidate, for suggesting that Barack Obama only achieved his status in the presidential race because he's black. In a brief interview with The Associated Press, Clinton was questioned about Ferraro's remarks.

The Obama campaign has called on the New York senator to denounce them.

Ferraro told the Daily Breeze of Torrance, Calif.: "If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position. And if he was a woman (of any color) he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept."

The newspaper published the interview last Friday.

Clinton said, "I do not agree with that," and later added, "It's regrettable that any of our supporters _ on both sides, because we both have this experience _ say things that kind of veer off into the personal."

"We ought to keep this on the issues. there are differences between us" on approaches to health care, energy, experience.

Ferraro is a former New York congresswoman and was Walter Mondale's running mate when he was the Democratic presidential nominee in 1984. She has endorsed Clinton and raised money for her campaign.

Obama called Ferraro's comments "patently absurd."

"I don't think Geraldine Ferraro's comments have any place in our politics or in the Democratic Party. They are divisive. I think anybody who understands the history of this country knows they are patently absurd," he told the Allentown Morning Call. "And I would expect that the same way those comments don't have a place in my campaign they shouldn't have a place in Senator Clinton's either."

Obama senior adviser David Axelrod said Ferraro should be removed from her position with the Clinton campaign because of her comments.

"The bottom line is this, when you wink and nod at offensive statements, you're really sending a signal to your supporters that anything goes," Axelrod said in a conference call with reporters on Tuesday.

"There's no other way to send a serious signal that you want to police the tone of this campaign," he added. "And if you don't do those things then you are simply adding to the growing compendium of evidence that you really are encouraging that."

Axelrod said Clinton has encountered problems because people view her as a "divisive and polarizing force."

"The best way to address those concerns is to not allow divisiveness and negativity to flourish among your supporters," he said. "And this is an opportunity for her to address that."

Jan Schakowsky, an Obama supporter and Illinois congresswoman, said Democrats should not tear each other down, and instead focus on defeating John McCain, the Republican nominee-in-waiting.

"I respect every person's right to promote his or her candidate, but any and all remarks that diminish Senator Obama's candidacy because of his race are completely out of line," Schakowsky said on the conference call.

Ferraro also said Obama has it easy because of a "very sexist media."

"I think what America feels about a woman becoming president takes a very secondary place to Obama's campaign _ to a kind of campaign that it would be hard for anyone to run against," she said. "For one thing, you have the press, which has been uniquely hard on her. It's been a very sexist media. Some just don't like her. The others have gotten caught up in the Obama campaign."

Last week, a former adviser to Obama resigned after calling Clinton "a monster."

I give Ferarro credit for restraint in not saying what she really meant: "Obama is an arrogant, uppity black man with an attitude."

Her comments mark the deliberate rollout of the "grease trap" phase of Clinton's kitchen sink strategy for Pennsylvania and beyond: Send out a cancer-surviving/first female vice presidential nominee/feminist icon to make provocative that rally the sisterhood and agitate a visceral bitterness among working class white voters that Obama exemplifies the unfairness of affirmative action.

It's a brilliant strategy.

Hillary's campaign is starting to be an embarrassment. So this is what we should expect this in her
administration if she wins? Ferraro just shut up and resign.

Ferraro is clearly an old guard democrat that is no longer relevant but where exactly did she warn:
"Don't "Antagonize People Like Me"??

I didn't see that in the text. The dems are tearing each other apart enough without being encouraged by sensational headlines.

Ferraro's comments were appalling. And Clinton's response to it? Equally appalling.

And for the record, i'm an old white woman! That's right. A white woman who supports Obama. And i am NOT alone. What do you make of that, Geraldine? Are we all traitors to our gender?

I'm going to be blunt -- this is the same foolishness that black people have been hearing from day one in this nation.

First it was, you're black, so you can't vote, much less run for office.

Then it was, you're black, so now you can vote, but it will only count as 2/3 of a vote since you are 2/3 of a human being...but you still can't run for office.

Then it was, you can vote and you can run for office, but you won't win the nomination because you are too black (Sharpton, Jackson, etc).

And now when a "black" man is winning, suddenly its "he's winning because he is black".

Utter and absolute GARBAGE.

It was the same with Jack Johnson, Jackie Robinson, Serena and Venus Williams, Tiger Woods and many other black individuals -- you have to be TWICE as GOOD (or get TWICE the delegates) to get HALF the CREDIT as your white peers.

Which, ironically enough, only makes you twice as good in the end.

Obama is simply a BETTER candidate than Clinton as he has proven repeatedly.

But I guess he has to be the "Tiger Woods" of politics before anyone will give him credit.

Uh...Mrs. Ferraro - did you ever think that maybe some members of the press and the public in general don't like Hillary because of her PERSONALITY, character, morals, slimy political tactics, etc., etc., etc.??? It has nothing to do with her being a woman - it has everything to do with her being Hillary!

...and Obama is where he is because of WHO he is - NOT because he's black. Otherwise, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and Carol Mosely Braun would all have been President. What an idiot!!!

This is the most cynical move yet by camp Clinton. Just when you thought they couldn't sink any lower, they find a way to do it. Clearly they are trying to get the black candidate to attack the white woman and further divide the electorate along racial lines. It is time that the leadership of the Democratic party stepped in to throw their weight behind Obama and end this thing. Otherwise, Billary are going to destroy the party if they are allowed to.

Start calling, writing and e-mailing your Representatives and Senators as well as people like Nancy Pelosi, John Edwards, Joe Biden, Bill Richardson and even Al Gore. Then tell all your like minded friends to do the same. A giant pile on will definitely get their attention.

It has become clear as I look back on recent events (the praising of John McCain, the comments of Ms. Ferraro, and Sen. Clinton's reluctance to remove her from the campaign) that the Clinton strategy has taken a very disturbing turn. They plan to use all open primaries to their advantage, and actively campaign as Republicans. With Sen. McCain off the campaign trail, Republicans have no good reason to vote in their primaries. Hillary Clinton's campaign is using this and the fact that Republicans want her to be the nominee to help steal the nomination. The Clintons will stop at nothing to grab and hold on to power. The superdelegates better wake up; and fast, or the Clintons are going to destroy the Democratic party for decades to come. I am embarrassed that I voted for President Clinton. Twice.

I never voted for Clinton. And I am glad I didn't.
I leaned Republican, but with Bush, I want him out and all the old party as well. I am paying more at the gas pumps, and Bush has no energy policy. Not to mention the Iraq war.
Mission Accomplished.

Frankly, that cynical viewpoint is silly to me. Neither did.

Cynical? Apparently you weren't around in 1980 when Ted Kennedy (Yes. He's an OBAMA supporter) SAVAGED Jimmy Carter -- all the way to the convention. Guess what? The Democratic Party survived!! What Clinton and Obama are doing is child's play, by comparison.

Grow up and get used to it. This IS politics in any country! And it is far worse in some countries, so what is the big deal?

To tell a black man that he's lucky to be black in the U.S. demeans hundreds of years of dreadul racist history that continues to this day in the Rep. from Iowa. Yes we should antagonize people like you Geradine.

To be more upset about being called a "monster" than one of her own supporters making a blatantly racist remark...again, the great credentials of being ready day-one. Sound ethical judgment here.

And then to say that she does "not agree with that" -- sounds like a "rejection" to me.

Geraldine Ferraro is the last of the good old east coast liberal racists who
spout concepts of racial equality while all the while living in a world where unless a person of color
is the appropriate kind of artist or acceptable black would no more be seen with an African American than your average member of the KKK.

People like her are soon to be a forgotten part of this country. Our young people don't think that way and see the world as it really is- a mixed bag of mutts.

Think back to what a horrible candidate Geraldine really was and any rationale person would see her comments for that of an old wretched out of touch loser, blessed with money only her husband earned and a legacy that is fringed with bitterness and negativity.

Of course there are a lot of these folks in Pennsylvania which will be a difficult venue for Obama, but that's Pennsylvania's problem not the rest of Americas problem.

Goodbye Geraldine your time has passed!
