This undated photo, supplied by the Teton County Sheriff's Department, shows Dawn Wells, the actress who played "Mary Ann" on Gilligan's Island, who was sentenced Feb. 29, 2008, to five days in jail, fined $410.50 and placed on probation in Idaho after pleading guilty to one count of reckless driving. The guilty plea came as part of an agreement with prosecutors in which three misdemeanor counts -- driving under the influence, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance stemming from an Oct. 18, traffic stop -- were dropped. DRIGGS, Idaho — Dawn Wells, who played Mary Ann on "Gilligan's Island," is serving six months' unsupervised probation after allegedly being caught with marijuana in her car.

She was sentenced Feb. 29 to five days in jail, fined $410.50 and placed on probation after pleading guilty to one count of reckless driving.

Under a plea agreement, three misdemeanor counts _ driving under the influence, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance _ were dropped.

On Oct. 18, Teton County sheriff's Deputy Joseph Gutierrez arrested Wells as she was driving home from a surprise birthday party that was held for her. According to the sheriff's office report, Gutierrez pulled Wells over after noticing her swerve and repeatedly speed up and slow down. When Gutierrez asked about a marijuana smell, Wells said she'd just given a ride to three hitchhikers and had dropped them off when they began smoking something. Gutierrez found half-smoked joints and two small cases used to store marijuana.

The 69-year-old Wells, founder of the Idaho Film and Television Institute and organizer of the region's annual family movie festival called the Spud Fest, then failed a sobriety test.

Wells' lawyer, Ron Swafford, said that a friend of Wells' testified that he'd left a small amount of marijuana in the vehicle after using it that day, and that Wells was unaware of it. Swafford also said several witnesses were prepared to testify that Wells had very little to drink at the party and was not intoxicated when she left. He said she was swerving on the road because she was trying to find the heater controls in her new car.

seems she was given a pass on the DUI... Wonder if the parents in the area were satisfied that she was weaving while looking for the heater controls

Why do we allow sweet old ladies go to jail for a VERY small amout of weed anyways? Is it cause they are a danger to themselves or others? I don't think so, keeping marijuanna illegal brings in revenue, by way of court costs, fines, and the biggest joke of all drug testing at the expense of the offender.

All that recorded time on the island and they never once mentioned that marijuana was indigenous to it. I always thought ginger, or even lovey, was stoned, but maryann? next we'll find out that thurston's father was a robber baron. Legalize pot now: don't let the old girl-next-door do even a day of probationary jail time.

See? It starts innocently enough with heroin and LSD, then, before you know it, you're "hooked" on "pot" and you're "toking" "reefers" and getting "hassled" by the "man". Bummer, man!

When will rational Americans finally just say NO to such stupid Puritanical anti-marijuana laws? Lawmakers are your SERVANTS. Much of our legislation is religiously inspired by fundamentalist Christians and paranoid power-hungry control freaks. Snap their leash NOW and put them in their place.

Gee, doesn't she look great? She should counter those STUPID anti mary jane ads with a look,,,,smoke the dope and look how good you can look pushing 70 ad! She looks natural, not tight and stretched like someone who has had plastic surgery, and not a wrinkle on her face! I also think it is ridiculous to prosecute anyone for pot, when the liars, theives, and warmongers in the White House have torn, ripped, spit and stepped on our constitution and there are no repercussions. This world is like bizzaro world! Decriminalize pot now! It helps people with pain, depression, and to have an appetite when fighting cancer. End the BS war against it!

Legalize it already! This crap is ridiculous. If Obama is elected, this is the only real change I would get behind.

She was lucky no one got hurt.

I'm not prissy about marijuana, but you shouldn't be driving if you've been drugging. That includes alcohol and prescribed drugs.

It's always the innocent-looking ones you have to look out for. Damn...Dawn Wells was the only decent thing about that God-awful show, and now she's my favorite all over again!
