'Gilligan's' Mary Ann Caught With Dope

DRIGGS, Idaho — Dawn Wells, who played Mary Ann on "Gilligan's Island," is serving six months' unsupervised probation after allegedly being caught with marijuana in her car.

She was sentenced Feb. 29 to five days in jail, fined $410.50 and placed on probation after pleading guilty to one count of reckless driving.

Under a plea agreement, three misdemeanor counts _ driving under the influence, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance _ were dropped.

On Oct. 18, Teton County sheriff's Deputy Joseph Gutierrez arrested Wells as she was driving home from a surprise birthday party that was held for her. According to the sheriff's office report, Gutierrez pulled Wells over after noticing her swerve and repeatedly speed up and slow down. When Gutierrez asked about a marijuana smell, Wells said she'd just given a ride to three hitchhikers and had dropped them off when they began smoking something. Gutierrez found half-smoked joints and two small cases used to store marijuana.

The 69-year-old Wells, founder of the Idaho Film and Television Institute and organizer of the region's annual family movie festival called the Spud Fest, then failed a sobriety test.

Wells' lawyer, Ron Swafford, said that a friend of Wells' testified that he'd left a small amount of marijuana in the vehicle after using it that day, and that Wells was unaware of it. Swafford also said several witnesses were prepared to testify that Wells had very little to drink at the party and was not intoxicated when she left. He said she was swerving on the road because she was trying to find the heater controls in her new car.

i had the pleasure of her being my host at the film fest a few years back and i all i can say about this bust is: legalize pot already. do the research and it's obvious, this drug harms no one except those prosecuted by ridiculous laws.

you're right....inhaling another other smoke is terrible for you but smoke from pot is "special". I agree with you, it should be legalized but lets not pretend that its not without its dangers. And personally I dont want a 70 year old lady driving around at night stoned when my wife and children could be on the road as well. And yes....many are responsible users....if you want to sit in your house, smoke a joint, eat pizza, watch a movie, and drift off to sleep I have no issue with that. But if your gonna be a jackass and feel the need to have 5 joints in your car on top of the one you are already smoking then....simply...you're a moron and you need to be arrested.

So I guess the whiplash and fractured vertebrae my wife sustained from being hit in her car by a stoner driving another car is not a harm? He was as high as a kite when he hit her. She was stopped at a light and he rear ended her at over 25 miles an hour. He totaled the back end of our car as she was driving for work, trying to contribute to society. And the kicker? He was driving to breakfast, then to the welfare office for a benefits meeting.

Oh, and let's not forget he had money for the purchase of pot but not for car insurance. My insurance had to cover the costs of totaling out the car up front and my rates went up as a result.

My wife missed a month of work due to her surgery and now she can only work a little over part time because it hurts to sit all day.

Fortunately, he had property I was able to place a lien on, but I guess you would also think I am being mean for wanting him to own up for his negligence.

Your looking fine girl. And I totally get your love of Idaho; while most of the state is a bit redneck, there are parts that are amazing and utterly stunning. Downtown Boise gets it politically, and Mc Call, Ketchum/Sun Valley, Driggs, and a handful of other places are amazing. Some of the best whitewater in the country...the place is infested with challenging rivers, hot springs, wildlife, and elbow room, Great backcountry skiing, fly fishing, mountain biking, climbing....and the whole center of the state is a huge wilderness, with the Middle Fork of the Salmon flowing through it. Keep smoking the green bud, and maybe I'll catch up with you on a river trip and share some of my homebrews and some 5 cheese dutch oven lasagna by the side of some remote river. You go girl!!!!
