Obama Ferraro

"Geraldine Ferraro has stepped down from her role as a member of Hillary Clinton's finance committee," CNN reports.

Ferraro said thousands of people are part of the finance committee, saying it is not a staff position, but a voluntary one for those who raise money for the campaign. She also said she has raised $125,000 for Senator Clinton.

When asked if she had any regrets about what she said, Ferraro replied, "absolutely not."

"I am who I am and I will continue to speak up," she said. She added that she thought it was a shame that the Obama campaign was trying to block her First Amendment rights, and that she felt that was no way to conduct a campaign....

Ferraro said David Axelrod, Obama's campaign manager and an acquaintance, should have called her to ask her the intention of her remarks, which she says the Obama campaign used to hurt Clinton.

When asked how she felt about Hillary Clinton distancing herself from her remarks, Ferraro replied, "I am perfectly fine," and that there were no hard feelings. She said she understands what Clinton is going through, and understands that being part of a presidential campaign is "very hard."

Ferraro's Letter To Clinton: The full text:

Dear Hillary -

I am stepping down from your finance committee so I can speak for myself and you can continue to speak for yourself about what is at stake in this campaign.

The Obama campaign is attacking me to hurt you.

I won't let that happen.

Thank you for everything you have done and continue to do to make this a better world for my children and grandchildren.

You have my deep admiration and respect.

Ferraro Still Unapologetic: The New York Times notes:

Geraldine A. Ferraro resigned Wednesday from Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton's campaign finance committee but remained unapologetic for citing Senator Barack Obama's race as the decisive factor in his success.

"I feel terrible for the fact that Hillary is stuck in this thing," Ms. Ferraro said in an interview Wednesday night. "Why put her in that position?"

Ms. Ferraro said that she was not asked by anyone in the Clinton campaign to leave the committee but that she did it on her own, sending an e-mail message to the senator's campaign Wednesday afternoon, as the political dust-up over remarks she made last week went into its second day.

+++

Former Vice Presidential candidate and Hillary supporter Geraldine Ferraro has sparked a fury on the campaign trail after commenting that Barack Obama was "lucky" to be black:

"If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position. And if he was a woman (of any color), he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept."

The Obama camp has responded strongly to the remark, seeking to contrast the response of Sen. Clinton to that of Obama in handling controversial comments by supporters.

Campaign manager David Axelrod has repeatedly called for Ferraro to be removed from her position with the Clinton campaign:

"The bottom line is this, when you wink and nod at offensive statements, you're really sending a signal to your supporters that anything goes," Axelrod said in a conference call with reporters on Tuesday.

"There's no other way to send a serious signal that you want to police the tone of this campaign," he added. "And if you don't do those things then you are simply adding to the growing compendium of evidence that you really are encouraging that."

Axelrod said Clinton has encountered problems because people view her as a "divisive and polarizing force."

"The best way to address those concerns is to not allow divisiveness and negativity to flourish among your supporters," he said. "And this is an opportunity for her to address that."

Barack Obama has called the comments "patently absurd," saying also:

"I don't think Geraldine Ferraro's comments have any place in our politics or in the Democratic Party. They are divisive. I think anybody who understands the history of this country knows they are patently absurd," he told the Allentown Morning Call. "And I would expect that the same way those comments don't have a place in my campaign they shouldn't have a place in Senator Clinton's either."

The Clinton camp initially responded with the terse statement "We disagree with her," but has since offered a response from the candidate herself:

Clinton said, "I do not agree with that," and later added, "It's regrettable that any of our supporters _ on both sides, because we both have this experience _ say things that kind of veer off into the personal."

Ferraro appeared on Fox News to defend her comments, warning Obama not to "antagonize" Democratic supporters like her:

UPDATE: Ferraro, in a follow-up interview with the Daily Breeze, claimed she is being attacked because she is white:

"Any time anybody does anything that in any way pulls this campaign down and says let's address reality and the problems we're facing in this world, you're accused of being racist, so you have to shut up," Ferraro said. "Racism works in two different directions. I really think they're attacking me because I'm white. How's that?"

The Clinton camp has responded to these comments:

Ms. Ferraro is speaking for herself. We have made clear that we reject her remarks.

UPDATE: The Clinton camp has released a memo insinuating that Barack Obama is playing the race card by focusing on Ferraro's comments. Here is the full text of the memo:

In January, NBC's Tim Russert confronted Senator Barack Obama with a four page memo from his campaign characterizing statements they claimed the Clinton Campaign had made about race. Asked in hindsight whether he regretted pushing this story, Senator Obama said:

Well, not only in hindsight, but going forward. I think that, as Hillary said, our supporters, our staff, get overzealous. They start saying things that I would not say. And it is my responsibility to make sure that we're setting a clear tone in our campaign, and I take that responsibility very seriously, which is why I spoke yesterday and sent a message in case people were not clear that what we want to do is make sure that we focus on the issues."

We agreed then. We agree today. Supporters from both campaigns will get overzealous. Senator Clinton today reiterated that when asked about Geraldine Ferraro's recent comments:

"I do not agree with that and you know it's regrettable that any of our supporters on both sides say things that veer off into the personal. We ought to keep this focused on the issues. That's what this campaign should be about."

Senator Obama's campaign staff seems to have forgotten his pledge. We have not. And, we reject these false, personal and politically calculated attacks on the eve of a primary. This campaign should be about the leadership we need for a better future and these attacks serve only to divide the Democratic Party and the American people.

UPDATE: The Ferraro story has continued on the morning news shows. Ferraro has said she is "absolutely not" sorry for her comments:

"I am sorry that people think this was a racist comment," Ferraro said in an interview with ABC's Diane Sawyer on "Good Morning America."

She continued:

"David Axelrod, his campaign manager, has chose to spin this as a racist comment because everytime anybody makes a comment about race who is white _ he did it with Bill Clinton, he was successful; he did it with (Pennsylvania governor and Clinton supporter) Ed Rendell, he was less successful; and he is certainly not going to be successful with me," Ferraro told CBS' "The Early Show." "He should have called me up ... He knows I'm not racist."

Obama referred to Ferraro's comments as "slice and dice politics" on the Today Show:

"Part of what I think Geraldine Ferraro is doing, and I respect the fact that she was a trailblazer, is to participate in the kind of slice and dice politics that's about race and about gender and about this and that, and that's what Americans are tired of because they recognize that when we divide ourselves in that way we can't solve problems," Obama said on NBC's "Today" show.

Both Geraldine Ferraro and Hillary Clinton are throughly unpleasant individuals and have done much damage to the Democrat Party. Surely, the time has come for Senator Clinton to get a tap on the shoulder. It is obvious she will not put the party or country first and bow out gracefully.

Good question. How poison will the Clintons be allowed to pour into the well?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:27 AM on 03/13/2008

It's Obama who needs to respect seniority and bow out gracefully. BTW, he is not an American Black who grew up in a black household. He is an African born in the US who was raised by his white mother in Hawaii and Indonesia. The blacks who have grown up in America have nothing culturally and experience-wise common with him yet are suporting him at 90% because of his skin color. Now that is racism and there will be payback - I guarantee. Why can't Obama ignore and take the high-road on some of these comments?? It is because he wants to make these trivial things a big issue so blacks are permanently soured against Hillary and he can tell the superdelegates that Hillary cannot be elected. The strategy is so transparent and disgusting.

Ferraro made the comment, how is it Obama playing the race card?

It isn't him making a big deal about this, it's the media. Hillary has played the gender card throughout this entire campaign.

And BTW, Obama is in the lead. Hillary can't win without stealing the election and Americans wont stand for that.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:13 AM on 03/13/2008

Where to begin...

So Obama, who is leading in the race for the nomination by every measure available, should now bow out? Maybe he should have respected Hillary's seniority, whatever that means, and not run in the first place, eh?

Barack Obama is a US citizen. He is not an African. He was born in Hawaii in 1961, after it became the 50th state. He lived in Indonesia for "a few years," according to the bio on his web site, but grew up in Hawaii. I'm sure black Americans in Hawaii would be astonished to learn how different their culture is from that of mainland black Americans.

Blacks in America support Obama at the 90% level because of his skin color - amazing. So if Idi Amin were alive today, he could expect to get that level of support here too, right? Idi Amin was a black man, after all. All us white folk would support him too, if you believe Ferraro.

What color is the sky in your world - at night, I mean...

She's a racist. There are many white Liberal female racists. They are the same people that believe that affirmative action is essentially unfair because women have it harder and tougher than black men. I am a white woman, and I wouldn't change places with a black man for anything in the world. The reality is that if Obama was a white man he would have clinched this nomination weeks ago. Here's more of Ferraro's racist comments:

3/6/08 Ferraro also made these comments in a John Gibson interview (4:06 minutes in)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqL_sm0J8jc

She said the same thing in 1988 in reference to Jesse Jackson

3/7/08 Article - http://www.dailybreeze.com/ci_8489268?source=rss_v

3/12/08 Ferraro lying about the context of her statement on Good Morning America

http://polijamblog.polijam.com/?p=878

These statements are a calculated political ploy to create more division and gain more of the white vote in PA. Believe me, Clinton endorses this kind of thing, no matter how many times she says that she rejects it. This has been her campaign strategy from the beginning. She will continue on this path, all the while claiming ignorance, when it was her and Penn's strategy from the beginning.

Hillary Clinton's and Nancy Reagan's resumes look quite similar! Each has 8 years in a governor's mansion, plus 8 years in the White House. Why... Nancy is just a few years' senatorial service shy of being the HRC equivalent on paper. Well, when actually applying the Hillary-fanatic's logic about resumes - where years spent in an executive government mansion is a "qualification", Nancy Reagan is thus more qualified to be president than Obama! Hey, McCain (McCon to some of us), if you are reading this, pssst, we've found the perfect running mate for you!!! We have a candidate with 16 years executive experience, who is named "Reagan", and who is also woman! And she is also more capable than Obama to take those calls at 3:00 AM. Oh, BTW Hillary and Nancy, I'm still voting for Obama, sorry, but I can just tell he's going to be a much more effective leader.

We shouldn't even consider a persons color when choosing a President. I would choose Colin Powell over Edwards or Hillary or Obama. What was going through the minds of those who voted in OH where 86% of blacks voted for Obama and MS where 91% voted for Obama? Wasn't that racism or was it ethnicity at work?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:49 AM on 03/13/2008

Fun fact: Bill Clinton got over 80 percent of the black vote in the 1992 Democratic Primary.

Another fun fact: Prior to the Nevada caucus, polls showed Hillary Clinton enjoying a lead over Barack Obama with the black vote. And then she started campaigning in earnest.

I think Obama's numbers are a combination of the two; they like Obama, and their horrified by what Hillary has turned out to be.

What Hillary "turned out" to be?

We've always known that the Clintons had a paternalistic view of their black supporters. We've always known that the Clintons manipulated black voters and encouraged the "first black President" myth. We've been telling you this about the Clintons for fifteen years.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:33 AM on 03/13/2008

Plus a calculated racial tone from the, are you ready, the Obama campaign. This is what turned me off with Obama. There was a four page mainfesto they circulated which listed talking points to their surrogates to use the innocent MLK comment and spinned it into racial tones. The memo also describes how to keep the "game" on the air for a long time so as to bludgeon their (Hillary) black support base.

Who says race baiting doesn't work? If Obama wins, it would be a shame that his campaign's dirty tactics were the key that catapulted him. Fortunately, people can read, not just faint. Obama will be known for who he is--an empty suit with no experience and who makes no toucg decisions (he skips town when there in an important vote, like Iran Rev. guard).

Inspite of this, if he some how finagles to get the nomination, the blue blood in me would still vote for him. The goal is to keep McCain out.

What? Do you want blacks for Obama to flog themselves for liking and voting for him? Some of us think that the country should be voting for him 9 to1. Are all those racists by not voting for a great candidate because he's black?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:29 AM on 03/13/2008

Was it "racism" when 86% to 91% of the black electorate voted for President Clinton in 1992 and again in 1996, or was it because they believed that he was a better candidate and a better choice for president than George H. W. Bush or Bob Dole? Was it "racism" when the black electorate overwhelmingly rejected the candidacies of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton and voted instead for their white opponent because they believed that neither Jackson nor Sharpton were credible candidates for the presidency? Or is it only "racism" when blacks support a candidate who also happens to be black, in spite of the fact that the candidate also enjoys the support of Americans from all racial and ethnic backgrounds? Is it "racism" to conclude that blacks do not have the wherewithal to make an informed decision about the candidate of their choice and are not politically astute enough to see beyond the color of that candidate's skin. And when one reaches such a conclusion, is that racism or is it ethnicity at work?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:29 AM on 03/13/2008

You are correct. Race should not matter. Blacks who voted overwhelmingly for BO may have done so as a repudiation of the race baiting generated by the HRC campaign. What do you say when large percentage of whites vote for a white candidate? Racism or ethnic pride? I guess we'll never know. What would be your reaction if a candidate or a campaign of any stripe insults your race, gender, sexual orientation, religeon or national origin (ask senator Allen of Va)? Blacks will continue to support any candidate who appeals and respects them regardless of color or gender. Its just the this particular candidate (HRC) blew it big time. Had she been more forceful and forthright in here rebuke of both BC (forget husband) she would have had stronger support from the black community..trust me. They were waiting for her. Now we wait for the next female candidate. America is ready, I know I am.
One Love!!

No, check polls from 2007. Hillary had the black vote up until December of last year. comments in her campaign have driven blacks away from her. She has truly alienated voters who for once have a choice in the deomcratic party. I suspect if Edwards were still in the race he and Obama would be sharing the AA "defectors" but since there is only one not-Hillary candidate it may appear racist on paper.

For the record, I am a white female and I witnessed the Clinton act in SC and it turned me away from Hillary so I certainly understand the reaction of the AA community.

That's what these remarks are intended to be: bait. Notice that every time the Clinton Camp unleashes race and Obama gets asked about it, he doesn't respond by attacking back in a personal manner, but instead uses grace and wit to make his point (in the Ferraro case saying being Black and named Obama's not a recipe for become president of this country). But any response at all by him causes Clinton people to say, "see, see, he's playing the race card too" - pure Republican playbook stuff. And then a compliant press nods in agreement by publishing distorted headlines like "Democrat Campaign Getting Dirty," as if both side were complicit. Clinton and her surrogates have disgraced the party, and she should be asked by cooler heeds to step down in order to prevent her from further setting up a win by McCain.

I noticed you call yourself Swift2. Are you out to Swiftboat Sen. Obama for the divisive and racial campaign that is originating from the Clinton campaign? It is of no benefit to Sen. Obama to be divisive or to focus on race. He wants votes from all voters. He is trying to hold a press conference with military experts behind him to focus on his qualifications to be commander in chief, and he is stuck being peppered by the press with questions about Geraldine Ferraro's remarks. Score one for the Hillary Swiftboaters! They sure are trying their darnedest to prevent Sen. Obama from getting out his message on the relevant issues. The racially divisive campaign only benefits Sen. Clinton at the expense of Democratic chances in November.
