'Significant' Amount Of U.S. Funds For Iraq Funneled To Militias

During a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing today on waste, fraud and abuse in Iraq, GAO Comptroller David Walker said that "the Iraqis have a budget surplus" which "is not being spent." He added that oil "revenues are going up" and therefore "one of the questions" regarding Iraq reconstruction is "who should be paying?"

Citing Iraq's rising oil revenues and the fact that the U.S. has already spent $45 billion rebuilding the country, Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) said that instead of President Bush "asking for billions" more to rebuild Iraq, the Iraqis "ought to be able to use some of their oil to pay for their own costs and not keep sending the bill to the United States."

Meanwhile, U.S. tax money is ending up in the hands of sectarian militias in Iraq. Later in the same hearing, Walker confirmed that a "significant" amount of what the U.S. spends on Iraqi contracts is being diverted to Sunni and Shiite militias. Stuart Bowen, special inspector general for Iraq reconstruction, agreed, adding that "it is a significant problem."

Only the most intellectually dishonest and/or the willfully ignorant,

like Ramirez and Bitter Betty, are still saying the surge is working.

It's all part of Bush's grand master plan folks! Keep the propaganda about the surge working going to fool American's into believing we need to stay in Iraq. Keep paying the insurgents until the election is over. So '100 years of war' McCain can get elected. I would bet anyone $100 that after the election it becomes a full scale civil war again! It's pathetic that we have to pay insurgents money to get a handle of the violence. It just shows how big of a mess it really is. Why American's constantly believe anything this pathological liar (Bush) has to say defies reason! You would think eventually people would wise up. These people (Republican's) always have a angle that's going to benefit their party. I can't say I am really happy about the Democratic candidates. But, I will under no circumstances vote Republican! When hell freezes over I will vote to them. I am committed to seeing these thugs out of office this election. Whose with me???????

How ironic! Maybe Bush wants to show how reach and generous US is.

I see, so now America pays for killing Americans. Maybe the 9/11 conspiracy folks aren't so nutty after all.

There are 180,000 weapons the DOD can't find. DOD " doesn't know where they are or who got them" but they've promised to get their bookkeeping in better shape. Are you kidding me! Based on the line here wouldn't it be a very real possibility that DOD has armed some faction with these "missing" weapons the GAO discovered in a recent audit?

Woman Earns Silver Star in Afghan War
By FISNIK ABRASHI – 2 days ago

CAMP SALERNO, Afghanistan (AP) — A 19-year-old medic from Texas will become the first woman in Afghanistan and only the second female soldier since World War II to receive the Silver Star, the nation's third-highest medal for valor.

Army Spc. Monica Lin Brown saved the lives of fellow soldiers after a roadside bomb tore through a convoy of Humvees in the eastern Paktia province in April 2007, the military said.

After the explosion, which wounded five soldiers in her unit, Brown ran through insurgent gunfire and used her body to shield wounded comrades as mortars fell less than 100 yards away, the military said.

"I did not really think about anything except for getting the guys to a safer location and getting them taken care of and getting them out of there," Brown told The Associated Press on Saturday at a U.S. base in the eastern province of Khost."

Two questions: why would it not be displayed, and what has it to do with this post?

1) I assumed this would be a restricted thread and I felt like being snarky.

2) While not directly related to the thread, the story does concerns our military effort in the war on terror.

Bonus info) My overall point is that no one on the left is interested in achievement, success, or heroism. Your reply confirms that as well.

One of the biggest reasons casualties have momentarily decreased. The others are al Sadr's agreement to a temporary ceasefire for his 80,000 men; and cold, hard numbers- there is no one left to kill-- between 3 and 4 million Iraqis are dead or have fled - that is nearly 15 percent of the total population. It has nothing, absolutely NOTHING to do with that idiotic surge. But that's what the Amerikan public believes ( and so once again the neocons propaganda tactics have worked- - as a nation we are so friggin over

I believe this is part of the Bush strategy to help McCain get elected. The US government makes deal with different factions in Iraq. The money keeps them quiet. The death toll is lower. McCain is able to declare that the surge is working "my friends".

love it hope this war mongering country pays out the nose. we deserve this and more.

iraq will bankrupt this country and what country deserves it more. first vietnam and over a million killed in that other illegal war now iraq.

as I talk to most americans on the street they could care less about dead vietnamese and dead iraqis. even hillary tells them to stand up.

we are war mongers. too many years of capitalism leading to imperialism to have wars for profits now we are out and out war mongers in our hearts.

hope the iraqis bleed us dry maybe then we will bring our war mongering troops home.

you know we are war mongers when we call our soldiers heros for fighting in an illegal war based on lies and deceptions. blood for oil the american way. 4 dollar a gallon gas now and what was it before we invaded iraq? pay through the nose war mongers.

think of the suffering we have caused in the world with our war mongering. one can only hope the iraqis can see through our war mongering for profits and kick our imperialistic butts out of their country.

Dig it - research the Japanese term "seppuku", or "jigai", and apply either method, on yourself. You can be mad at the Government and I could dig that, you could be mad at the few in the military that do heinous shit, hell I'm even with you about violence being as American as apple pie. The American fighting man originally was designed to defend, the ideals of the Constitution, and serve the will of the American citizenry. Funny, didn't mean to go Japanese - but their "Kanji" characters for Samurai, mean "To Serve". So these American Samurai go with good intentions - but with lying warhawk cowardly leaders, send those brave souls to die for OIL not FREEDOM. After a while, we don't mean anything either, just getting you and yours HOME, in one piece. Why do you think the grieviously wounded want(and try) to go back? Their brothers and sisters are still in harms way........

It will be fun watching what's gonna happen when we stop bribing these warlords. And it will be blamed on the president who will have the sanity to get out of there to save the USA from being a failed state.

We are bribing leaders millions of dollars to tell their fighters to wait until 2009 when W retires.

It is all about BushCo making it through until the next administration has to deal with the reality.

Is it any wonder we in the U.S. are having a depression.

I don't understand why the election talk revolves about the recession (depression) when our lack of funds and the Iraq war are obviously linked - can't have one without the other.

The significant amount of funds being "diverted" to the militias is exactly the "surge" strategy.

One pays one's adversaries to stop fighting one.

This creates the impression of progress and incipient victory which is the real goal of the "surge".

Then the next President (a Democrat though perhaps once again the Dems will rush to select that perfect replacement for John Kerry) can either

(a) withdraw (and thus be slimed as the one who lost Iraq and undermined Pan's many (imagined) accomplishments there

(b) stay the course and thereby destroy the Democratic Party

The surge is indeed working.
