WASHINGTON — The Treasury Department says the federal deficit swelled to $263.3 billion in the first five months of this budget year as record spending during the period outpaced record revenues.

The department's latest snapshot of the government's balance sheets, released Wednesday, shows that the deficit for the budget year that began Oct. 1 was up a whopping 62 percent from the red ink of $162.2 billion for the corresponding five-month period last year.

The latest year-to-date budget deficit of $263.3 billion was an all-time high, the government said.

Spending totaled a record $1.23 trillion, while revenues totaled $967.2 billion, also an all-time high.

For the month of February alone, the government ran a deficit of $175.6 billion, a record for any single month. That was larger than the shortfall of around $170 billion that economists were expecting.

One of the reasons the deficit was running higher was related to a calendar issue, the Congressional Budget Office said. Because March 1 fell on weekend, payments that the government would ordinarily have made in March were instead made at the end of February. That caused spending to be higher in February, contributing to the larger budget deficit.

The White House predicts that the deficit this year will increase to $410 billion, as the economic slowdown cuts into tax revenues. Many analysts predict economic growth will be feeble in the January-to-March quarter; a growing number believe the economy is actually shrinking now. Under one rough rule, the economy would need to contract for six straight months to be considered in a recession.

The Bush administration and many private economists are hopeful that the economic growth will pick up in the second half of 2008, as the government's $168 billion rescue package of tax rebates for people and tax breaks for businesses ripple through the economy. The Federal Reserve's interest rate reductions also should energize the economy in the second half of the year.

So far this budget year, the biggest spending categories are programs from the Health and Human Services Department, including Medicare and Medicaid, $292.9 billion; Social Security, $270.5 billion; military, $247.6 billion; and interest on the public debt, $198.5 billion.

If my recollection is correct during the 2004 presidential campaign Bush promised that the federal deficit would be cut in half by 2008. It was about 300 billion then so it looks like he lied to us. I'm shocked!!!!!

And don't forget that while we are broke, Hillary had the highest pork spending of them all.
And you want to vote for her and get more of the same LOL - are we nuts yet?

Bush's Tax Cuts for the wealthiest Americans amounts to about $200 billion of the deficit, every year that the tax cuts are in place. Of course, if we believe the people who sold us the WMDs lies, giving money away to rich people actually is good for the deficit. And there is a bridge in Brooklyn for sale.
Wasn't it the Nazis and the Communists who were supposed to be so good at telling the Big Lies?
The Republicans seem to have learned a thing or two over the years.

"The White House predicts that the deficit this year will increase to $410 billion..." In other words, in order to just break even for the year, every American (all 300,000,000 of us) need to send the White House about $1400. What the hell are they doing?

Wrong, our debt is 59 trillion and that kind of money would behoove every living American to pay
34,000 in taxes every year for the next 75 years. Of course, this includes social security, federal
retirement, etc. But apparently, this figure is not asinine enough for the 19% supporting Bush still.

Stop the hemorrhaging. The U.S. treasury needs some respite. U.S. taxpayers, their children and grandchildren are going to bear an already oppressive burden.

The time to start turning this around...is now.

Under a Bert administration, I'll be asking every government employee, every servicemember, every 'contractor', to turn back 30% of their compensation as part of a national concerted effort to bring the federal budget situation under control. Suddenly getting 7 dollars out of the 10 that you were expecting would be a GREAT way, in my view, of getting those charged with the custody and proper stewardship of the federal purse to be constantly on the lookout for ways to get the whole situation balanced, and keep it that way. This country should be deep, deep in the black. But, we're not.
If you support that kind of fiscal reform approach, then vote for Bert. Let's get this done!

Why the hell does congress get a free pass? Bush can't spend a dime without Congress.

$263.3 Bil?

Last year the INTEREST alone on our debt was $429 bil. Interest, no principle.

And 33% of that, or about $129 bil was due to Bush and the GOP congress over the last 6 years.

This is one reason, of many, the dollar don't look so happy these days.

Would appear that without Bush's war and the interest on Bush's debt, the budget would be balanced...ain't that nice.

Do any of the expenses for the "War on Terror" appear in these budget numbers? I thought that somehow those dollars are separate and not included in these "deficit" numbers. Regardless, the Bush administration is running a record deficit, while simultaneously being morally bankrupt.
