LOS ANGELES — Harry Potter was the center of seven novels, but he'll star in eight films. The final book in the wildly successful series will be made into two films, the Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday.

Producers are expected to announce Thursday that J.K. Rowling's last "Potter" installment, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," will be split into two parts on the big screen. The first film is slated for release in November 2010, with part two following in May 2011.

"It was born out of purely creative reasons," producer David Heyman told the Times. "Unlike every other book, you cannot remove elements of this book."

The two final "Potter" films will be shot concurrently, much like the blockbuster trilogy based on J.R.R. Tolkien's epic fantasy novel "The Lord of the Rings."

Another famous Tolkien tome, "The Hobbit," is also being split into two live-action movies set for back-to-back shooting to begin next year.

Filming on the sixth "Potter" flick, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," began in September.

"It's been brilliant," said star Daniel Radcliffe. "It's also, I think, the funniest of the films so far."

The "Potter" film franchise has pulled in $4.5 billion at the worldwide box office.

I must respectfully disagree with your assessment. I'm not a huge fan of Emma Watson, though I think she does reasonably well as Hermione. Daniel Radcliffe has, indeed, improved, but I find him to have a rather limited emotional expressiveness. Rupert Grint, on the other hand, really began to show his potential in the 3rd film and soared in the 4th. The 5th frankly didn't give him much to do, but he still had golden moments. Far more than the other two, he exhibits emotional nuance and the occasional light touch. If you doubt this, I encourage you to see his 2006 film, "Driving Lessons" with Laura Linney; his work is heartbreaking and honest.

I think their choices for actors is unfortunate. Daniel Radcliffe has come along nicely as he has matured, but the other two, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson are weak at best. I expected that from them when they were young in the first film, but now that they are up to number 6, I expected a little better. (I'm sorry if I have offended anyone. This is just my opinion.)

Yes, please Hollywood... go back to making to making vapid romances, incoherent action spectacles and obnoxiously juvenile comedies. Who the hell needs all this intelligent, high-quality family entertainment?! God forbid we might actually be forced to use our brains while sitting in a movie theater.

I gather the fans were disappointed with the omission of the House Elf stuf in whichever one it was. As the final book ties everything together I'm sure nothing can be left out so it;s either got to be one really, really long movie or two longish ones. The ending of the series also needs to satisfy the fans to serve them up for the theme park that I gather will open in 2010 ( ?).
I think it would be smart if they releaseed the final two as close together as possible (six months instread of a year between?).

The books are too simply written for my taste ( I only read two and a bit) , whereas as the films reflect the growing sophistication of the protaganists for obvious reasons and that I enjoy. I'll wait for the DVDs rather than take up a seat at the cinema that a true fan would appreciate more than I.

I think that Deathly Hallows was too long by half. All that traipsing about in the woods. When I read it to my neice, I skipped those parts, summarizing them and moving on. The end was the ticket. I think that those parts (SPOILER ALERT) in the castle and in the woods w/ Voldy were key. And the very end.

I can't imagine splitting the book in two. Part one will be boring and part two will contain all the action. I'll tell you one thing: everyone will go to both (Bec and I will, that's for sure) and that's another $40 to Warner Bros.

Now that the momentum of the books coming out is over, I think that the films will be less successful, and that they'll probably re-evaluate after film #6 tanks (comparatively).

It won't tank. Potter fans are going through some 'Sirius' withdrawals. If anything, the sixth film will have the biggest opening, and the last two even bigger.

that's not going to happen. #6 - and #s 7&8 - will do just as well or better.

Well, they're milking this last one for all it's worth. Good thing too, not only is it the last book, but Daniel Radcliffe is starting to look like he could be Harry's dad.

I'm surprised they haven't tried to stretch it out into 8 movies.

The movie companies are just weeping knowing that their big cash cow is coming to an end.

...or like the formula that ruined the "Matrix" and "Pirates of the Caribbean" sequels.

Just imagine how clunky the titles for these things will be. "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II: The Return of Ron"

I don't know why they're doing two movies for one book now, when they should have done it two movies ago - instead of changing the entire plot of the 4th movie because introducing another house elf would have been too expensive for a billion dollar franchise. They should just make the movies and get it over with. Movie 5 was utter crap; the 6th will be done by the same director, so it will also be utter crap. Why try so hard to save face in the final hour - who are they, the Bush Administration?

Number 5 was very good, not crap.

Look, the films are long, but they move along quite well, just like Lord of the Rings did. So their approach should be the same way as LOTR. You want to have a 3 hour movie? FIne. But when they release the DVD have an Extended Version that has some extra scenes. If the film is that good people will buy it, I know I did with LOTR and I really enjoyed the extra scenes

Two full movies for one book? I, of course, will go see it, but ti does sound like milking old Bessie for all it's worth. For a lot of these kids this will be their entire careers, and maybe that's not so bad.

In 10 years, when they remake the films, with new cast, etc, they can do it in an 8 hour per season, 7 season show for something like HBO, and make even more money.

This one split is not the last anyone will see of Harry Milking.....
