Mccain And Romney

CNN:

The Arizona senator joked Wednesday he got the impression Romney is interested in the No. 2 spot on the Republican presidential ticket after watching a recent interview with the former Massachusetts governor.

"I got that impression from him watching his interview last night, I got that impression," McCain said laughing on his campaign plane in New Hampshire.

The comments follow Romney's interview with Fox News Tuesday night, during which the former presidential candidate said he'd be honored to serve alongside McCain.

What exactly does Romney bring to the McCain ticket? McCain will win or lose based on the choice of the Democrats. If Obama wins out, McCain is doomed. If Clinton wins, it will be on having destroyed the party, and McCain should spend the fall planning his inauguration.

McCain's weaknesses are that large parts of his own party dislike him, he is too old, and he's the most fervent backer of an unpopular war. Other than being younger, where does Romney help? Maybe he woos the conservative Republicans who don't have a problem with his Mormonism.

Romney brings three major flaws to the ticket: 1) his insincere personality, which doomed his campaign from the start; 2) Huckabee supporters will be even less likely to back to McCain with Romney on the ticket; 3) McCain looks like Bush's puppet for letting him pick his own nominee.

Remember that Huckabee got 41% of the vote in Virginia well after the race was decided. Obama is polling ahead in Virginia, so McCain would have to start the campaign by trying to woo Republicans in a state that has been a Republican gimme since 1964. Obama will win lots of enthusiastic black support in the South, while Romney will repel Southern Baptist voters. If McCain wants to keep the Solid South against Obama, Romney is exactly the wrong way to go.

Romney does, however, help in Utah, Idaho and Wyoming.

Romney brings some perceived credibility on the economy (although we tried that MBA president thing and it did not work out too well for us). McCain is an admitted idiot on economic matters, and that will be the hottest issue in November.

The problem the repubs have is that they need a new game plan. The rovian techinique to win the southern states by appealing to the bible thumpers and nascar rednecks just doesnt work with Mccain as the candidate. Hard to win the election without that.

Someone who thinks endless war is a good thing, coupled with someone who wears magic underpants. What's not to love about that ticket?

The downside is that these two guys really don't like each other.

The upside is that politically it's a pretty good matchup. Romney brings economic credibility to the ticket and reassures the conservatives. Plus it could put Massachusetts in play in the general election. And if the GOP takes MA the election is over.

Romney left MA with a 30% approval rating, which is why he didn't win re-election. He brings no appeal to MA voters, except those few who already are voting Republican.

How "economically credible" was Romney to spend millions of his own money for a job that pays $400,000.00 a year? I got the impression he is like Georgie, trying to win Daddy's approval. McCain wants a VP who is at least as short as him, like Lieberman. McCain is one angry, bull headed arrogant man. If he would not defend his own family against Bush/Rove. what makes you think he would defend the rest of us???

Even with Romney along for the ride, McCain will have great difficulty overcoming the energy behind the movement articled above which appears to be shoving Obama to White House.

Great. That means if Hillary is the nominee, McCain will win and then die leaving us stuck with Romney.

Weren't we supposed to be so lucky with Cheney? Don't count on it.

I still have no idea who's going to win. With half the Republicans showing up to support their candidates, and a large percent stoutly against McCain, going against a Democratic base double their number but evenly split between two camps in Clinton and Obama, it's anyone's game and anyone can still drop. Not a good year for US voters...

"I don’t think you have a personal relationship, but you have to have a comfortable, professional relationship." In McCain-speak this translates to "It doesn't matter if I hate his f***ing guts."

Good God! McCain would have to hire a food taster or Romney would be president by next Easter.

Romney might have been the GOP nominee if he had stuck to the center instead of pandering to the Revival Tent Republicans. What made him interesting as a potential candidate was his ability to win the gubernatorial election in one of the most liberal states in the country. Instead he decided to cast his lot with the snake handling moralizing busybody brigade of the GOP. The irony is that his religion prevents him from ever gaining their votes.

Right now, his pandering to the extremist right wing makes him unacceptable to the moderate wing of the party. Mitt knows the rules. You gotta dance with them who brung 'ya. It'll be Minnesota's Pawlenty or Florida's Crist. Or they have the best shot at it. Today.

Crist would be a good choice, but does McCain want to risk further alienating Huckabee voters by nominating someone who is very likely gay?

Jeb is waiting in the wings. The old Bushes endorsed McCain, so there HAS to be something in it for their family. They NEVER do anything unless their family gains something. McCain will not last 4 years, and JEBBY will be in what the Bush's think is his "righful place"
