Olbermann Slams Clinton in Special Comment: "You Are Campaigning As If Barack Obama Were The Democrat And You Were The Republican"

Huffington Post   |  Rachel Sklar   |   March 12, 2008 09:11 PM

Tonight, as promised, Keith Olbermann attacked Senator Hillary Clinton in a ten-minute "Special Comment," saying that he was not endorsing Barack Obama but that "events insist" that he speak and stand against her "tepid response" to the controversial remarks of Geraldine Ferraro wherein she said that Obama wouldn't have been as successful if he were not black. Last night Olbermann decried the statements as "clearly racist"; tonight, he followed up with a doozy in which he accused her of "campaigning as if Barack Obama were the Democrat and you were the Republican." In so doing, said Olbermann — in letting the opportunity to forcefully oppose Ferraro's comments pass her by — Olbermann said that Clinton had "missed a critical opportunity to do what was right."

Watch the video below and read the transcript here.

Geraldine Ferraro has stood by her comments and denied that they were racist, saying on "NBC Nightly News" tonight that they were response to a specific question about why this election was special, and saying that it was the Obama campaign that was playing "this type of a race card." (See related video here.)

Olbermann chose to frame his comment in terms of bad choices on the part of Senator Clinton, stopping short of calling her inherently racist, instead casting the matter in terms of her receiving bad advice from the "tone deaf" and "arrogant" members of her campaign ("they are killing your chances of becoming president...[and] slowly killing the chances for any democrat to become president"). He characterized Ferraro's remarks as "a blind accusation of sexism and dismissing Senator Obama's campaign as some equal opportunity stunt," and decried her comments both in this instance and historically, pointing to the "cheap, ignorant vile racism that underlines them."

Olbermann specifically fingered (but did not name) Clinton campaign manager Maggie Williams, saying that instead of repudiating Ferraro's words — "words that should make any Democrat retch" — she was instead "letting her campaign manager bend them beyond all recognition into Sentaor Obama's fault...thus giving Ferraro nearly a week to [send the dialogue] back into the vocabulary of David Duke."

"Do you not see, Senator?" Olbermann asked. "Senator Clinton, this is not a campaign strategy. This is a suicide pact."

Olbermann took the opportunity to mention a number of other matters (or, in recent campaign parlance, to 'throw the kitchen sink' at Clinton), criticizing her also for the "shell-game about choosing Obama as Vice-President," as well as her husband Bill Clinton's comments about Jesse Jackson after the South Carolina primary, the "racial undertone of the 3 a.m. ad" and the "moment's hesitation" in her much-parsed answer on 60 minutes and said that after all the accrued episodes in which race had been implicated, people now "see a pattern" of racially-tinged remarks and associations with Clinton — though he carefully stopped short of definitively asserting its existence: "False or true, they see it," said Olbermann.

He was far more definitive about Ferraro, and that's where the comment returned in its final few minutes as Olbermann implored Clinton not to allow herself "to be perceived as standing next to — and standing by — racial divisiveness," and once again brought it back to her campaign members and what they had wrought. "Grab the reins back from whoever has led you to this precipice before it is too late," said Olbermann. "Voluntarily or inadvertently, you are still awash in this filth....your only reaction has been to disagree and call it "regrettable." Unless senator you say something definitive, the former congresswoman is speaking with your approval."

Said Olbermann, in a callback to Clinton's own stand taken at the last Democratic debate: "You must reject and denounce Geraldine Ferraro."

He finished with "Good night and good luck." OUCH.

Full transcript of Olbermann's remarks may be found here. Related blog posts found here, here and here.

He told all of us that he was a uniter and race was completely out of the picture. Then his pastor and long time friend's comment were discovered. This was like testing positive for steriods. Strike one.
White America became shocked and angry. He then made a good speech admitting he was in the church when these words of hate were spoken. He then said his mother was a typical white person and was a subtle racist. Strike two. He tried to cover it up last week by saying his grandmother was not a racist, she was just a typical white person. Strike three. He is done. I am 79 years old, in good health, write books and guest columns. According to Obama, I am a white racist. The truth is he is
the one that is a racist and that is what his children are being taught which will keep the devide going for many more years and as long as Black America keep hating us.

Somebody tell Obama there is no such thing as a typical white person. He should apologize to all the white people who voted for him because they thought he was not a racist. I am sure they wish they could have their vote back. If the Democratic Party finds a way to get rid of Obama, you can bet Obama is not on the short list of vice presidential candidates and if Obama limps to the nomination, Hillary will want no part of this sinking ship. Keith Oberman, like all journalist, is trying to bail out the water in a sinking ship, but this is a bigger hole than the swift Boat veterans was for Kerry who is now the joke of the Democratioc party. The voters will decide who they believe..

Love Keith, but he is wrong on this one. That is....if he weren't drinking the Kool-Aid for Obama. Let me just say that if Obama gets the nomination, McCain will be sworn in on 1/20/09. I know the U.S. is the greatest republic on earth and we're multicultural, but between Wrights remarks and Michelle's gaffe, the GOP will clean up in November. I can't see a combined ticket so he loses older women who will not forget how hateful Obama's supporters have been on this post and others. They will vote for McCain plus Dem congressional seats in the Fall. His black and yuppie base is not enough to win the Presidency without traditional Dems and all of the kings men....won't change anyone's vote. Trust me.

WAdem ....
I agree... However, Olbermann works for MSNBC... NBC's Parent Company is G. E.... They have an interest in building a couple of Nuclear Power Plants in the Houston area... As in multi $$$$$ Billions... Obama is more pro Nuke Power Plant...
Excelon helped finance Obama's Campaign for the U S Senate, after Obama watered down a Bill to Require them to Report Nuclear leaks... They (Excelon [largest Nuclear Power Operator USA] had at least 2 leaks into groundwater in Illinois where Obama's watered down Bill (suggested instead of "required"/change) died in Committee... Obama's Campaign Manager worked for Excelon at one time... Obama got a Campaign Financing help from Excelon....
Just maybe that is why MSNBC sounds like Obama Election Headquarters...
Think on what Olbermann just did for General Electric's prime Candidate... Olbermann just Nuked one of Obama's opponents for Racism... Even a hint and KAAA POW! Make opponents and the MSM very Fearful of opposing Obama...
So, Obama plays with Race all he wants free and clear, and opponents get accused of Racism... Just wait till he is in Bush's shoes! Another free pass President... Fear worked before and still does...
I would advise no one hold their breath waiting for an Olbermann Special Comment on Obama, in connection with Rev Wright and Obama's Campaign playing the Race Card...

I hope it was good for jim, too.

Well said, the campaign tactics of the Clintons are revolting, and they are going to lose the election for us no mater who the nominee is, unless it is stopped now..

Hillary is the New Nader

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:46 PM on 03/15/2008

wow. i've never put it in that context. but it kind of makes sense.

As a white, female, older-than-Hillary, American Democrat, whose father was the son of a Republican magistrate and whose brothers and sons are Republican, and whose mother was the daughter of a Democratic construction contractor who raised nine children, and even supported the family of an uncle during the Great Depression on his own steam, without a cent from the government, I've seen both sides of the political spectrum. I was originally for Dennis Kucinich. I'm now for Barack Obama.
I sympathized with Hillary when the news came out that Bill cheated on her, but don't believe that makes her presidential material. If the Red Phone rang, I'd much rather have Obama answering.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:00 PM on 03/23/2008

you go, keith!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:27 PM on 03/15/2008

yes, that's right, you go Keith, I'm waiting for the special comment on the disgusting hate speech of Obama's close friend, mentor and spritual advisor. Let's hear it Keith, the remarks made by this man are the most outrageous I have ever heard, were is your rant against him and by default Obama. You go Keith!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:34 PM on 03/15/2008

Obama had no hesitation in distancing himself from those remarks. Hillary has to be forced to do so (once again)...

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 07:00 AM on 03/16/2008

Yo Keith, I'd rather have an interview with Rev. Wright than a special comment. I didn't find his comments hateful, I found them provocative and painful in a realistic way -- I look at our arrogant, heedless bombing of innocents and wonder what the hell happened to us. We've even got it down to a formula, according to 60 Minutes, killing 29 bystanders is ok and standard enough that the guy calling for the strike doesn't have to call for permission. We're supposed to be better than this.

Don't kill the messenger.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:28 AM on 03/16/2008

i am a regular viewer of keith and his insightful, passionate commentary. he is truly shedding light on the current political process, and makes a very good case. in all of the divisive, desperate, and unreasonable attempts for the campaign hillary is leading, one issue is very clear....she doesn't understand the math, when she attacks in her own party. mc cain is not acceptable, but if she is so bent on having the nomination lay with her, or not at all...she may just hand mc cain the presidency! not acceptable!

After this latest from Keith I think that I am folding up my tent, turning off the TV and heading for the road until election day. Whoever is the democratic candidate, that's who I will pull the lever for. I don't care who it is. I'm sick of this shit. . . .

Mr Olbermann, shame on you for telling the truth!

Does Hillary look like she's worried what you say or think?

Keith should stick with cable sports where his lack of professionalism is appreciated.

Olbery old boy how about a commentary on Obama. You have lots to talk about ,Rezko, his pastor, you can even do this if the writters strike, because it will write itself.PS Today marks a month I haven't tuned you in.

I appreciate Mr Olbermann's comments to as a warning to be careful of those people who are associated with the campaigns.

Both Senator Clinton and Obama have learned this painful lesson this week.

Now, let's proceed with the business of putting a Democrat in the White House already!

Go Democrats! See you in Denver 2008!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:20 PM on 03/15/2008

Mrs. Clinton is fighting to win the democratic nomination the only way she can; by rekindling racism. It is the type of simple math that Carl Rove is famous for using. This country is a majority white nation and if Hillary's campaign can create black vs. white silos of distrust, she will prevail.

The strategy might work. The American public has historically been very slow to recognize when they are being manipulated.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:18 PM on 03/15/2008

Once again, Keith nails it.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:42 PM on 03/15/2008

I am not amused by any of the three still-standing candidates. I doubt if I'll vote for any of them. What a sad thing that we are left with these, when there were several excellent candidates running. The ship of state is foundering and this is what is offered as leadership.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:16 AM on 03/15/2008

The corporate media, a handfull of rich-white-men, started telling Democrats about a year ago, that Clinton and Obama were the "frontrunners". The Democratic voters took the bait and rejected some excellent candidates including Edwards and Richardson so they could back the "winners". So now the Democratic primary is all about race and gender. The corporate media have succeeded in splitting the party. McCain is looking better all he time.

has the KoolAid been spiked? i just saw a huge halo of gold circling obama's radiant head.
what a freakshow it has all become.... the old boys club- endlessly bashing hillary. it was too much watching them bash her on the night she won ohio and texas... bashing unabated.
i've loved keith oberman.... but he had just become so biased and obsessed.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 05:46 AM on 03/15/2008

Poor Keith. Since Bush is all but a memory, he's evidently resorted to manufacturing outrage for his "comment". Even without admitting a tingling sensation, his endorsement of Obama has been obvious for quite some time.

I'll always thank him for saying what no one else in media would say about the Bush administration, but an unneeded voice adding to the chorus of angry men against Hillary isn't courageous, it's just sad.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:36 AM on 03/15/2008

That"s what you get when you allow little college kids and academia types run your campaign. I was tending towards Obama until the ultra left wackos started spewing their venom and invective against Hillary on a non-stop basis.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 06:28 PM on 03/17/2008

Indeed, KO has become a farcical caricature. His manufactured outrage, as you aptly put it, now leaves me bored and cold. I gave up watching his show, which was the only reason I ever tuned to the empty void that is MSNBC, some weeks ago when it became obvious that he was blatantly shilling for Obama. Even vapid CNN is preferable to the unbounded misogyny and irrational Hillary hatred spewed by the MSNBC jocks. It is enough to make rethink the candidacy of that unreasonable man, Ralph Nader.

You can see it your way, but the truth is, Keith said it like it is. Obama has bee the subject of an insidious campaign to cast shadow on his character, reputation, integrity and yes, there is a racial undercurrent in the Clinton campaign. My husband is a white man and he doesn't like the tone of Hlillary's campaign.

Really? Sad? Did you listen to ANY of what he said?

Ferraro's comments are stupid and racist, and Hillary hasn't done anything with a sure hand to distance herself from them.

This is not just about Barack Obama. It's about the fact that both of these candidates are attempting to make history, and are trying to liberate this country from its history of crapping on minority groups, women, African-Americans, Native Americans, etc, etc. And yet, one of the campaigns seems to be capitalizing on that very same history of discrimination!

I remind you again of what Ferraro said. She said the Barack Obama, a BLACK man, would not be in the position he is in if he were not a black man. On every level, this is obviously an absurd and racist comment. One would suspect that Ferraro is slowly losing her faculties if she hadn't said the same thing twenty years ago about Jesse Jackson. And yet, Hillary does nothing but say "I don't agree with that," in a very bland, half-hearted manner. No action was taken to remove Geraldine from the campaign. And she continued to go on and make more idiotic remarks.

No advantages have been conferred on black men in our society simply in virtue of being black. Please do yourself a favor and acknowledge this. Both of these candidates are working from backgrounds of marginalization, not one or the other.

As a Shop Steward we fought hard to get more women and minorities hired... Been there, and fought the good fight... Tired sigh.... Having said that....

Soooo, Obama wants to be the First "Black" President... "Black" man, "Black" America, "Black" Voters... Let's give him what he wants... President of "Black" America...

The rest of us want someone to fill the Office of President of the U. S. A. That leaves us with a choice of Hillary, or McCain who seems to want to continue our Invasion/ Occupation of Iraq... So, regardless of skin color, I. E., black, brown, white, yellow, red and ALL blends thereof, we have a opportunity to elect a strong fighter... Hillary Clinton... Is she a Washington D C insider??? Yes, and that too has some benefits... Like how Legislation gets passed... Like Political maneuvering... LBJ got Civil Rights Legislation passed because he knew what he needed to do...

We're fighting for our HOME, People... Hope will change nothing... People with black skins, People with white skins, Asians, Hispanics, Gays and Lesbians, Native Americans, Islanders, all blends thereof, this is our Home... Fight the Good fight! Please do NOT let the Obama Campaign divide and Segregate our Home...

The Obama Campaign has done their best to stir Fear in the MSM, and other Campaigns, by playing to Race and Playing the Race Card... The Obama's use FEAR as skillfully as Carl Rove does... Barack actually could have run as a Candidate.
