Pro-Obama Governors Challenge Hillary "Big State" Spin

The Obama camp has rounded up four governors of big states to argue against Hillary's claim that she wins big states while Obama wins caucuses:

RE: Debunking the Clinton Campaign's Dubious "Big State" Spin

In an attempt to minimize the significance of Barack Obama's success in winning more than twice as many states as Senator Clinton, her campaign's supporters have attempted to diminish the importance of the states where Senator Obama has prevailed.

Senator Obama has scored important victories in each of our states - states that will play a decisive role in deciding whether or not John McCain will be given the chance to enter the White House and extend George Bush's failed policies for another 4 years.

In each of the 30 primaries and caucuses that Obama has now won, including Mississippi yesterday, he's shown the ability to motivate Democrats to turn out at the polls, win the support of blue collar voters in suburban and rural communities and attract the support of Independents and Republicans. That's the kind of candidate Democrats need to nominate to beat John McCain in November, and it's the kind of leader America needs to bring to Washington the kind of change we can believe in.

The Clinton campaign's argument ignores relevant facts about how significant a role these states played in determining the outcome of the presidential race in 2004. In fact, Obama has won 7 of 9 of the biggest states that were close in the 2004 presidential election and have already selected delegates to the 2008 Democratic convention.

More than half of the votes that Senator Clinton has won so far have come from just five states. It's also worth noting that polls in four of these five states show that Obama would be a stronger general election candidate against McCain than Clinton.

Obama Winning Vast Majority of Big States that Were Close in 2004

Nine of the largest states that were decided by a margin of 8 points or less in 2004 have already held a caucus or a primary to select delegates to the 2008 Democratic Convention in Denver. Obama has won seven of those nine contests - including four that Bush won.

Clinton Totals Padded by States Where Obama Does Best Against McCain

The Clinton campaign's misleading argument about the importance of her performance in the largest states actually highlights the limits of her appeal and her ability to win the general election.

To turn the Clinton argument around, more than 55% of her popular vote total and nearly half of her pledged delegates have come in just five states. In four of them, polls show that Obama would be a stronger general election candidate against McCain than Clinton. In the fifth, Texas, Clinton admitted that she didn't expect it to be "in the general election calculation."

Anyone else notice the coaching that Hillary had on how to smile? The open mouth smile, jaw open, teeth bared. Look back at video and photos form 6 months ago, let alone a year. She NEVER smiled like that. Now, all the time.

My theory? She's had performance coaching by an angry bear.

Good night. I will leave you guys with one last present about Hillary, that gives us a true perspective of how she was unethical and a liar when she was 27 years old and interning at the White House during the Watergate investigation:

You are starting to worry me, Nochnoi. Even BGAE---see one of her posts, below---says he needs to stop playing defense, and she's right. He needs to stop that and stop about 14 other things. Hillary has been running this show from the start, and she still is. And she will win the Nom, especially if everybody gets... giddy... with overconfidence. So far, there is not much to be overconfident about, though there is something to be confident about. What does Hillary have to do, for you to stop declaring the winner 3 months early? Burn down his house? It is just plain silly to brag about how 'he wipes the floor with her' . No, he doesn't, he never has. But even if it were true---oh, never mind, if you want to believe there is no more danger for him, fine, but don't come crying to Huff if she ambushes him in that debate. Bang! And I don't mean a surface wound, either. And even if he gets through the debate or even wins it, he is still in danger.

One other thing I forgot to mention is that Al Gore is none too fond of Hillary. I know he hasn't weighed in on the debate, but he and other Dem statesman are taking note. They also know that she is DLC and Kerry for instance, who is also DLC has backed Obama. Pelosi knows she's done herself in, and that Obama will be the nominee. Nobody is going to upset Pelosi's chance for a larger majority in the Senate not even the Clintons. And Obama is following Dean's strategy of the 50 state plan. Obama is Dean's candidate of choice, believe me.

I mean... larger majority in the HOUSE, for Pelosi. Pelosi and other leaders are right behind Obama. I even think after reading an article in the NY Times that John Edwards is giving him advice. Everybody is going to wait this thing out until the end, but at the end, you will see all the rest of the Dems come forward and support Obama. It's not cockiness, it's just understanding what is going on within the Democratic party. She can keep fighting but she can't win on the math and she won't win the super delegates support with the way she has behaved. If all the big Dems come out and support him toward the end, you will see that she doesn't really have much of a chance.

That is good to know, thanks BGAE. Not sure about Pelosi, are you sure she is quite done in? What if later on she and she alone manages to get Hillary to give up? Then she will be a very great hero.

You're just succumbing to a bit of paranoia. She hasn't got anything on him. There are 2 things that have happened since she started throwing the kitchen sink. Older Dems are getting angry that she endorsed McCain over Obama. That is a no-no in the Democratic party. Secondly, they are seeing that her strategy will backfire on her if she gets the nomination, that it will drive many Obama supporters away from voting in the general election. Clinton is at the desperate stage. She is trying anything and everything in the hope that it will rattle him and his team. But the reality is that she is digging a hole for herself a little deeper and deeper with every surrogate, with every smear. I know that it seems like she is starting to win, but she isn't. She won't come out ahead in pledged delegates and she won't come out ahead in the popular vote, and the super delegates will hand the nomination to Obama. I agree that he needs to take a more active role in keeping the issues at the forefront of the media, but she doesn't have anything up her sleeve that she can ambush Obama with in the debate. He wins on points. He probably just needs to bring things up such as Bill's repeal of Glass-Steagall that has led to the mortgage crisis. And that Hillary was against Nafta only in the very beginning because she was worried it would take away from her healthcare portfolio.

http://robertreich.blogspot.com/2008/02/hillary-and-barack-afta-nafta.html

Also he could bring up the fact that she flip flopped on torture:

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/us_world/2007/09/28/2007-09-28_hillary_flipflop_on_torture_inspired_aft.html

The fact that Bill was involved (and reimbursed) in the Dubai ports deal:

http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/60414c4c-a95e-11da-a64b-0000779e2340.html?nclick_check=1

There is something else that Hillary is going to have a severe problem with, and that is her tax return. If Bill is on the tax return, then she is going to be taking flak for Bill profiting by 20 million dollars in hedge funds, which he changed tax laws while he was in office that benefit those hedge funds, and him monetarily.

Oh come on, nohat, he's in danger even if he WINS the election. In fact he is going to be in danger everyday for the rest of his life. I couldn't imagine ... I get worried when someone stares at me eating a hamburger.

Hope you didn't take the 'Bang!' literally. I didn't mean she'd bring a gun. Yes, he will always be in danger---from whites who hate blacks, just to name one group. But in my post I meant political danger, when I said 'danger'.

Here it comes. If I don't get cocky like you, my level of support for Obama is in doubt. No wonder the Hillary supporters can't stand us! What a low blow, Nochnoi. You have read enough my posts to know how fervently I support him. I would never have thought it of you...of all people on this site, that I know about, anyway. Go back to the forest, where you must have been today, and find the little fairies, the ones that are singing 'Obama, the Inevitable One!' That's what Hillary used to sing! And your low blow suggestion, 'Are you really supporting Senator Obama?', is something Hillary would resort to. Any disagreement, and the guy who disagrees is the enemy. Lovely. They do that in cults, Nochnoi! Any disagreement, and you are no longer one of us, they cry. I feel sorry for you. Unless you are just drunk...?
