Snakes are probably our least favorite animal. While we know a lot of them get a bum rap, it's snakes like the Black Mamba that ruin it for the rest of them.

We were saddened and terrified to hear that:

The body of a young British wildlife enthusiast, who would have celebrated his 29th birthday today, was flown back to London last night after he was bitten by a deadly black mamba snake in South Africa.

Mr. Nathan Layton was walking in the grounds of the South African Wildlife Campus in Hoedspruit with teachers and other students taking a safari field-guide course organised by the nature group Bushwise when the attack happened.

Bushwise staff acted immediately, calling an ambulance when Nathan reported symptoms of a snake bite. Nathan was pronounced dead soon after the ambulance arrived at the campus," the group said in a statement. "He died as a result of a lethal bite, given to him by a juvenile black mamba snake."

Morbidly curious, we looked into this lethal creature. Apparently, the Black Mamba is the world's fastest snake and is often considered the most dangerous. But at least they live in Africa, not Manhattan. According to National Geographic:

Black mambas are fast, nervous, lethally venomous, and when threatened, highly aggressive...

Black mambas live in the savannas and rocky hills of southern and eastern Africa. They are Africa's longest venomous snake, reaching up to 14 feet (4.5 meters) in length, although 8.2 feet (2.5 meters) is more the average. They are also among the fastest snakes in the world, slithering at speeds of up to 12.5 miles per hour (20 kilometers per hour).

In Cheney's case, it's the color of his soul.

I work as a docent at Zoo Atlanta. The only near fatality we have had was from a keeper, thinking that his assistant had put one of the Black Mamba's in the back in his holding pen so his terrerium could be cleaned. Um....he hadn't. The snake darted out from behind some rocks and bit before the keeper before he even knew it was in sight. Once bitten you have thirty minutes (approx) to recieve antivenon. The Black Mamba venom is both neurotoxic and hemotoxic. We keep antivenom for all of our snakes at the zoo, only problem being that, by law, it can only be administered by a physician. They called 911, grabbed the antivenon out of the fridge and raced for his life. He got to the hospital 25 minutes later, was administered the medicine and medically supported. He was in the I.C.U., comatose for three months. In rehab for a year. He still, ten years later, has huge neuro deficits from his ordeal. Not a snake to be messed with.

The Black Mamba has lost its #1 spot...

The fastest Snake-In-The-Grass now is Senator Hillary R. Clinton.

They don't call it 'the two step' for nothin! (you only get two steps after your bitten then your dead)
Most young snakes are very dangerous because they don't yet know how to give the right dose of venom and end up giving a large dose.
I had to learn about snakes when I worked in the Arizona dessert. They don't have Black Mambas but in the spring when the vipers and rattlesnakes come out of hybernation they are hungry and mean.

It's always great to get a Manhattan viewpoint on nature. However, the article only says they're "among the fastest", not the fastest as the headline says. And, there are different aspects involved in which snake would be the deadliest, such as how poisonous their venom is, how long it takes to kill, how much they normally inject, how aggressive they are, whether anti-venom is available, etc.

That was also Uma Thurman's codename in Kill Bill, because of all the assassins, she was the most deadly.
