Obama Wright

Video of Rev. Jeremiah Wright, pastor and mentor to Barack Obama, has been posted. The Reverend defends his most famous constituent and attacks Hillary Clinton, saying, "Hillary ain't never been called a n****r."

Meanwhile, The Blotter has detailed some highly controversial statements by Wright in the past:

Sen. Barack Obama's pastor says blacks should not sing "God Bless America" but "God damn America."

The Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Obama's pastor for the last 20 years at the Trinity United Church of Christ on Chicago's south side, has a long history of what even Obama's campaign aides concede is "inflammatory rhetoric," including the assertion that the United States brought on the 9/11 attacks with its own "terrorism."

UPDATE: Politico points out that Wright actually holds a formal position with Obama's campaign:

Wright is a member of Obama's African American Religious Leadership Committee -- the sort of largely honorary, advisory body that in recent days has recently been used mostly to throw people off who say controversial things.

The Obama campaign couldn't immediately say whether he'd remain on the committee.

Well, maybe Jeremiah Wright don't want Obama to be President because Obama doesn't agree with his radical views.

Think about it, Wright is clearly trying to sabotage Obama's campaign.

This woman can't hold the promises she made to the DNC about FL and MI, so everything she's said on the campaign trail is just as elastic. She's an A-Grade liar.

You have to laugh!

The freepers were first to be discussing it, gleeful that they finally had found something against Obama....then they shared it with Rush Limbaugh, who gave it wide push with his show, and today,
Scarboro is pushing and pushing and pushing...

They are offended, mightily offended, that 9/11 - correctly - was brought about by America's imperialism in other countries. Like it or lump it, that's why Bin Laden claimed he did it....

They are agast that black Americans don't see the same America they do.... like where have they been that they cannot understand that every black in this country views it and their lives through the prism of hate in which they've lived and been controlled all these years.

They are determined that Barack Obama will explain this, and distance himself from it..

How racist can they dare to be on the airwaves...that they refuse and fail to credit the atmosphere of hate on which they've prospered and blacks have not.

Everyone who is jumping on this pastor needs to open their eyes.

Hillary Clinton, barack Obama and John McCain are all professed Christians.

The CORE belief of Christianity is that all non Christians are going to be tortured burning in a lake of fire for eternity.

How is it that anyone is judging Obama's pastor for his statements when none of his statements are as bad as his CORE belief that all non Christians are going to burn in hell forever for being non Christians.

And so does Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama and John McCain. Unless they are lying about their faith.

This is all rediculous.

Nobody in the history of politics has ever had anyone say anything as bad as what is preached in all Christian churches as a CORE belief.

If we are going to start pointing out what pastors are saying that is offensive, we should probably start with that giant gorrilla in the room.

Sigh.

But I promise you that nobody will say a word about the fact that all of our Presidential candidates believe that if you are not a Christian that you will be tortured in a lake of fire forever.

Why?

Because that would be....

Actually... what is the good reason that this is being ignored by all of you?

HA!! Ask them their opinions on gay people and get back to me on the kind loving words they have for them. Or about the girl who gets an abortion, or about Muslims. Nearly ALL religions are defined by hate, because they profess to have the right answer, and those who don't believe "their way" be damned.

This is not just any run of the mill Christian Church. This man is preaching hate and the Obama's have listened to it for 20 years. The other candidates have long records of public service to judge if they do more than talk the talk - Obama has been on the national scene for about a minute and a half. Maybe he's fine, maybe he's not - the press has not done their job in vetting him - I'd like to know more, but as with most negative stories about Obama, its not covered. Where was Keith Olbermann last night with this story? The so called journalists of this country are leading us astray - shame on them. If we don't get the truth on this matter and Resko and whatever other skeletons there are - say hello to President McCain.

I specifically watched Keith O. last night to see how he would spin this one, or else make it Senator Clinton's fault. He mentioned it in passing....minimally. I'm sure he's hoping it will "go away". But since the morning shows have been covering it extensively, I'm sure he will have to address it tonight.

I just watched a bunch of the videos from Rev. Wright on Abc news and some other sites and I was completely shocked. This is a thousand times worse than the Ferarro statement. I cannot believe Sen. Obama went to this church for 20 years. What was he thinking? And it's not just that, but this man is a close spiritual advisor and friend to him. Some of the video clips I saw have older Sen. Obama statements showing his close relationship with Rev. Wright. If Sen. Obama is our nominee, the Republicans will use this to tear him apart. I had read about the Rev., but this is the first I have seen of his outrageous statements. I know that some of it comes from the hurt of historical racism, but that doesn't excuse most of it. If McCain or HIllary had a preacher who said stuff like this, they would be pillaried. This guy sounds like David Duke in the reverse. Sorry, but I think this will be a big problem for Obama. MSNBC and Air America may ignore it, but the Republicans and Fox and talk radio will go crazy with this in the fall.

I think Chris Rock said it best, "to black people, America is like an uncle that paid your way through college, but also molested you"

The key issue people need to focus on is this. By every objective measure Barack Obama has been about inclusion and equality. He has a black wife and kids, was raised by his white mother and grandparents, has an Asian sister and niece, grew up in Hawaii and parts of Asia, attended Harvard, where he became the first black president of the Harvard law review. Barack's life has been about interacting successfully and beings friends with people of all races, starting with his family.

Second, let's take a look at Barack's views on America. Barack has spent his entire adult life trying to improve this country. After graduating from Harvard, when he could have written his own ticket, he took a (relatively) low paying job helping the community. He has constantly striven to make America a better place. Be it through making America safer with his work on nuclear proliferation, or caring for our veterans with his bills relating to Walter Reed. Additionally Barack realizes that the confluence of events which led to his parent meeting and him being born could have only happened in America.

Further regarding Pastor Wright's sermons, it is not necessarily racist to point out the crimes that America has committed in its history, and it's very naive to think there haven't been any. It's not racist to point of the neglect of those who live in inner cities, or to point out the effect that badly written or executed drug laws have had, or to point to an economic system that funnels wealth to the top. These things are acknowledged realities within the black community. And they have been created by a government that has been run primarily by white people. There has been and still is in places, institutional racism that affects the black community, talking about it is not necessarily racists, and not talking about and pretending that everybody in this society is treated the same will not solve the problems. I want a president who is aware of these issues. Pastor Wright specifically says that the Bible tells him to love all people, and it is clear that this part of his message got through to Obama.

inludes where he blames whites for pushing AIDS! to blacks.

Some one said something interesting on a blog.

"What's worse , having a racists in your membership at a church OR belonging to a Racist CHURCH?

People need to try to put themselves in other people's shoes more, to hear them differently. Even if what someone is saying is factually wrong, there may be historical reasons for why people would believe it.

Whites pushing AIDS to blacks. Sounds off the wall. It was one of those urban legends/rumors that had a lot of traction a while back, espoused by all kinds of people, actor Will Smith among them. Not saying it's true, but recall high rates of infection among African American communities, in Africa, and the really racist way in which the disease was first linked to Haiti, the worlds first black nation. Put yourself in someone else shoes, notice that all around you and then recall things like the Tuskegee Syphillis Experiment in which 400-500 black men--and only black men and mostly poor rural sharecroppers--were let to die of the disease as part of a science experiment that lasted until 1972. The Aids thing-yes, a rumor, but one that gains traction for historical reasons.

Hurricane Katrina that the government flooded the 9th ward on purpose. Doesn't appear to be true, but again a rumor that circulated widely among African Americans. Paranoia, maybe. But in fact, the predominantly black 9th ward was purposefully flooded during a hurricane in 1965 to ease the damage in other (non-black) parts of the city.

Things that sound so outrageous--though still factually inaccurate--may have so much power because the draw on that history, a lot of time a history that the people who are crying outrage don't know and the people who are listening to.

This is not to excuse or condone Wright's divisive and provocative language; it is not to call him right. But let's listen a little differently. Hold off on the outrage and just ask why is stuff like this said, why do people find cause to believe it, what does it refer to, etc. etc.

The same can be done for Ferraro's comments. They can be read differently. I gave in another reply three different possible readings; each one can be engaged; we can try to see why she's saying them, and why people either think what she says is obvious and common sense, or what she says is ignorant and racist.

Getting past the divisiveness isn't just about talking differently, it's about listening differently. And I just happen to think that Obama--by temperament, training, design--is a person who listens differently.

I agree with you. What links Obama at all to this attitude of fear, however, is Michelle's comments, his reactivity to being challenged and race-baiting, his disdain for being asked to give a more complete explanation of his relationship to Rezko, Michelle's sneering at people who ask about his policy ideas and, mostly, his attitude that it is perfectly acceptable to trash the very real accomplishments of others.

That is the link to me. It's just information and validates the reason why I was hearing positive words but seeing negative effects.

Check your history....

Koop, Reagan's Public Health officer, got the booklet with everything we knew about AIDS ready to be mailed out to all citizens, and Reagon refused to allow it..

He believed it was just deserts for Gays.

If his refusal to sit down with Blacks was interpreted as ALSO a callous disregard for all their medical and social needs.... Then came the objection to distrbuting condoms, and the objections to sex ed, and all mannor and forms of getting public information out about AIDS.

What does that have to do with Obama being a member of this racist Church for 20 years? He preaches a strong hate for America, he blames 9/11 on the victims and claims the Gov't spread AIDS. You would heve to be a nut to belong to a Church like that and think America will accept that in their President. Obama and his wife were married in that Church and take their children there to listen to that hate.

White people pushed Syphilis on Blacks in the Tuskegee Experiement. Now, you tell me if the skepticism is appropriate? Whether you would like to accept it or not, white people have done some fucked up stuff to not only Blacks, but people around the world...whether or not they infected Blacks with AIDS, you cannot pass the comment off as "silly" when you look back at the Tuskegee Experiement, lynchings, and Jim Crow. Where was Homeland Security when America was terrorizing the Black Community?

You ALL need to watch the whole video. Any of you who see this as racist are blind, deaf and dumb. He is talking about the experience of being a Black man in America and contrasting it with the white power structure. He's not even speaking about Hillary in particular, he's talking about all of the other candidates who are wealthy, privledged and yes white.

I don't think that if you watch this whole video you can say with a straight face that is saying ANYTHING that could be construed as offensive or for that matter untrue.

Also I believe if you check the date of this video it was around the time that the MSM was arguing about whether Barack was Black enough! Which is where this video ends.

So please, please, PLEASE (as Bill would say), GIVE ME A BREAK!

Yes blame the victim when he tells us to get our feet off of his neck. . Blame the victim when he tells us that he is pissed off about having to see all of his leaders killed for standing up for what is right.

Yes blame the victim for having the balls to tell us how has been consistly shafted for and screwed over for something he can't controlled , the "color of his skin" , GET A LIFE YOU VICTIM BLAMERS! And stop paving and smoothing your road to hell to make your trip to there speedier.

Ace and unsolved: I agree with what you're saying about the issue of whether or not this is justified speech. There is no group in America that has suffered and is entitled to these feelings more than African Americans. The problem here is that that misses the point. The point to discuss now is now whether or not this is justified but rather how this will play in the General Election when used by the Republican 527 groups and Rush Limbaugh and Bill Oreilly and Sean Hannity. Barack will be pummeled with this over and over and over. It will have a major impact on the ability of the Dems to win the White House. Thats the point and that is why it is relevant that we discuss it now.

*****I understand the point you're trying to make, but try making it at Joe's Bar in Middle America or the bowling alley or the (white) church picnic. Democrats may be able to look past this in the nominating process, but if so, if Barack wins the nomination, he will surely not win the general election.

Mission Accomplished
The Media and those who are against Barach Obama can't stop returning to the race card. The only result will be that white Americans who don't see wHAT'S GOING ON for what it is, will think ill of Obama. Since day one, Barach Obama's campaign has been about two things:
1.Uniting Americans accross party, gender, racial, age, and economic boundaries.
2. Making the voters realize that they are going to be required to step up after the election to the challengies of the lobbyists, the military industrial complex, and other special interests. Only a grassroots coalition that uses their ultimate democratic power of the vote can change America.

So thanks to the media who must revere emotional tintilation over substance as news. There was one statement that could have been understood along time ago: "Yes emotional followers may stay stupid or "rediculous" things, but Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are not racists. End of story." As a 64 year old white guy fom the suburbs, I'm sickened by the low level standard used to determine what's newsworthy or relevant. If any of us looked at our own six degrees of seperation, there would be racists, drug addicts, criminals, and more in our own networks of life.
Will someone get back to how to extract ourselves from Iraq, supress terrorism, change energy direction, get universal affordable healthcare, improve our education system, and positively affect our short and long term economics? Once again, we're rejecting what's needed, a populist movement to stand up for change. Sad, but true. Shame on the architects of fear and devisiveness and shame on the media for getting sucked in.

Roots he established when he moved to Chicago as an adult after college graduation when he worked to help families struggling after steel plant shutdowns during the Reagan era. His ultimate answer was to work within the system, by going to the best law school he could, graduating with honors, returning to Chicago to work as a civil rights attorney and adjunct professor of constitutional law at the University of Chicago. Doesn't sound very radical to me. Change we can believe in--Obama '08.

w/ all due respect and I mean that because i've read some of your past postings and see you as being quite respectful. That rarity w/ age as opposed to most kids who support obama and curse out here.

The media has force fed this ? hmmm

what part of god damn america and not god bless america was force fed?
what part of ' he is my mentor and spirtual leader' was force fed ?
what part of ' contributed 20k to this church' was force fed?
what part of ' membership for 20 years in that church ' was force fed?
what part of ' he is on obama's campaign' was force fed?
what part' title audacity of hope given to obama by the pastor' was force fed?
what part of ' 911 was america's fault' was force fed?

NOW THINK ABOUT THE black kids attending the church .... what are they growing up to hear from their pastor every sunday. They are not slaves, they are not working in plantations. Yet, they are hearing every sunday ( perhaps all week from parents)--- hate the whitey! curse the whitey. never trust the whitey! never speak to whitey , unless you want his votes!

I'll end w/ this. SO obama says he distances himself from this man. And yet he was invited and kept on on his campaign team? and continues to be on it?

Clintons came out of the South - Arkansas - not the Chicago ghetto. Two different African American experiences. One rural and the other ghetto Blacks in Chicago.

There are two movements within African Americans - one that wants integration and equal opportunity (Jesse Jackson) and the other than wants segregation, Black Supremacy, and revenge (Farrakan's). Obama is affliated with the later which is why the traditional African American leaders who came out of the MLK and Civil Rights movement endorsed Obama last. They knew something white Americans didn't know.

The fear is that integration will destory Black culture and the power of those who rule only in an all Black environment, hence the need to remain segretated and hidden.

I am a woman, so I don't doubt your statement. But that's really not the issue here. Democracy is about all of us figuring out how to get along.

And that means, we each have a vote.

And that means we each matter, even if we're privileged.

The beauty of this whole thing, Barack HUSSEIN Obama won't be able to distance himself from Rev Wright, he's been with him 20 yrs! If he denounces him, whites won't believe him, blacks will call him Uncle Tom, I love this shit, it's Barack HUSSEIN Obama's Howard Dean scream. I thank you, Barack HUSSEIN Obama, & Hillary thanks you.

I am furious that Obama has not distanced himself from Wright. Do not even try to compare Ferraro's comments to this. No Way! Dime con quien andas y te dire quien eres. Obama should stop trying to disillusion himself about not sharing some of his views. BTW, as a person who is part Puerto Rican, I have encountered racism all my life. I have even gone to D.C. and been the subject of ridicule while riding in a cab by the cab driver who was of another hispanic culture. When he was spewing his venom about how the Puert Ricans were a bunch of lousy good for nothing pigs, he then turned and asked me where I was from because I was so cultured and spoke Spanish so well. I then had to drop the bomb on him. Needless to say the only tip he got was to get a haircut. While Hillary haters claim she plays the victim card, it is because many of you have chosen to make her one in your minds. She can't win with any of you-no matter what. If she stays with Bill, she is a doormat. If she leaves, she is disloyal. You have accused her of murder(Vince Foster), being a lesbian-which if she is fine, okay. You have accused her of being neglectful of her husband's sexual needs, You have accused her of racism. You have called her a viscious bitch when she defends herself against the media's attacks. You call her a traitor to the democratic party because she voiced a balanced opinion of McCain. You have accused her of stealing the nomination. Now Obama's pastor implies she shouldn't be president because she has never been called a N- - - - R! As someone who has been called spic, chico, dumb Puerto Rican-by a nun no less, wet back, and for some reason even Spic/Jew girl- I guess my features lend themselves into confusing people about my ethnicity, these do not bother me. I have never used them as a crutch to not succeed or to attribute blame. As a child I would get angry for two seconds and then quietly vow to myself that I would one day show them all. I did. So did my sister, so did my dad who because of his culture was only encouraged to attend a vocational school when he entered HS. These comments gave me backbone and made me stronger. But to be truthful, of all the degrading comments I have ever been the recipient of, I believe C**T would have to be the worst of the bunch. The creator did not create PR man and woman. He created man and woman-period. Our color, race etc..is all a product of our choice of spouse to procreate. When men and women choose to apply this word to a woman, they have instantly created a victim, without even intending to. If we were created from Adam's rib, I guess Adam and all men are C* * TS too. So perhaps we should elect a gorilla for president since neither sex is qualified, yet both qualify as C**TS.

He has distanced him self many times, in fact a year ago he was critized for distancing himself from Wright. Wright has been retired for over a month. This speech was over 3 months ago, before any primary's.

My favorite racism story is about a beautiful woman whom nobody knew was Hispanic. She was "privvy" often to derogatory remarks from people about having to hire due to Affirmative Action.

The idiots who talked this way had no idea she was a Latina.

Barack does have some explaining to do. I'm sure there are many people who think their preacher is a kook but they go there because their friends go to that church. No country will ever be perfect and to condemn a country for some minor issues is absurd! That would be like condemning a whole church because of a kook preacher! So what if Hillary didn't grow up being a poor black. Does being born poor (black or white) make you a better candidate? Why was Barack raised by a single parent? I guess his dad had other things on his mind other than taking responsibility. This preacher is a kook!

No one is going to be happy with the results of the election. Videos like this will energize the republicans. I'm a conservative and wasn't planning to vote for McCain. McCain makes me sick but on the other hand someone who hates America even makes me sicker! I remember some quote by Barack:

"My friends, we live in the greatest nation in the history of the world.

I hope you'll join with me as we try to change it." -- Barack Obama

Favorite post of the day. I asked my S.O. the other day, how he would feel if we white folk kept calling Senator Obama racial invectives as frequently as Senator Clinton is called sexist invectives. You know what he actually said to me? He said, "Well, that's different. Those names shouldn't offend you because they don't have the same meaning to you that the word n has to my race". I was so flabbergasted and angry that I couldn't even respond. The word C*** isn't as offensive as the word n*****???? Huh? To those of us with female genitalia is it. Most certainly!!!
