Pat Buchanan Loses His Cool During Discussion Of Obama's Race On MSNBC

Things got combative on MSNBC's "Dan Abrams" show Wednesday night during a discussion of Geraldine Ferraro's comments about Barack Obama's race.

Pat Buchanan, who took Ferraro's side, sparked the ire of his fellow guests Rachel Maddow and Keli Goff as he explained why Ferraro's comments revealed certain truths about Obama's success. As the discussion heated up Buchanan, struggling to get his point across, resorted to that oldest of debate tactics: simply telling Goff to "Shut up for a second, please!" Needless to say, the dispute didn't end there.

I watched the entire segment. Buchanan had plenty of time to give his opinion uninterrupted. Then Dan went to Keli and as soon as she started to give her opinion, just 15 seconds into it, he started interrupting her over and over. I've never seen him yell "Shut Up" to anyone in all the years he's been on TV. And the first time he does it is against a black woman. Very telling indeed.

Pat Buchanan knows something about racism: In Pat's 1992 presidential campaign his northern New Jersey campaign coordinator was none other than Hal Turner, a racist, white supremacist, anti-semitic hate monger (he advocates rounding up and killing Jews) who was/is known as Hal from North Bergen New Jersey. Among other despicable behavior Turner writes Holocaust denial drivel and advocates assassinating judges and public officials he disagrees with. Hmmmmmmm.

All talent, grades, accomplishments, etc. being equil, what if Hillary was a white man and Obama was a black woman or , make up another race gender profile. for them. The polls are divided along race, sex and age in every primary and we all talk about it. I honestly think that no person thinks that Obama had a easy, lucky life because he is a black man. I think we wonder how much that factor brings new voters register. The combination is special and fantastic and a first. If he had run 20 years ago the situation would have been different. He is a talented man who is black at a time where that is a good thing. We wonder how much his race has to do with the excitement ,on top of his talent. I really believe that is the context for the "lucky" comment. I also think it is curiosity that leads us to ask weather Hillary is exciting people because she is a woman and are some voting against her because of it? This is over and above any other factors like Bill or her record. I know some people who think that she is unlucky to be a female at this time. Whatever. Race and gender are part of this election in a new and different way this time around.

That was painfully uncomfortable. Pat is a rightwing blowhard who spews forth his anachronistic ideas, and most of the time he is wrong. Good job, MSNBC, keeping him around.

Pat Buchanan says shut up to John McLaughlin all the time. And Bankley, and Clift.

Like this is new, he tells everyone to shut up.

Goff wouldn't shut up and kept talking over Pat, I give him kudos for not hauling off & punching her.

I almost never agree with Pat Buchanan, but I like that speaks his mind. However, this time something more than zealotry was showing: white, paternalistic, pent up emotion spewed out in two words. Pat tried to interrupt her as much as she tried to interrupt him, and Eleanor Cleft does it all the time. What showed was his sense of rich, white entitlement and that racist fear of losing control

Wouldn't THAT be ever so manly of him; striking a woman. Come to think of it, I am a bit surprised that he hasn't crossed this line yet, being the transparent bigoted, sexist, insecure-in-his-manhood piece of work that Buchanan truly, unmistakably is.

I just finished watching the exchange for a second time; Buchanan was simply wrong, simply not dominating the debate, and did the only thing his little man's brain would allow, namely to tell the woman of colour in the room to "shut up." Such a manly man that Pat Buchanan.

Buchanan's behavior is simply one more reminder to this old SNL fan of the classic John Belushi skit of the sailing frigate "Raging Queen" whose crew were such "manly men." Yet this ficticious sailing ship's crew were nothing in comparison to the "family values" of the current Republican Party it would seem:

Real family values party that Pat Buchanan serves so slavishly; family values like the locals in THE HILLS HAVE EYES!

OF COURSE PAT BUCHANAN ISN'T A RACIST....

In a column sympathetic to ex-Klansman David Duke, Buchanan chided the Republican Party for overreacting to Duke and his Nazi "costume": "Take a hard look at Duke's portfolio of winning issues and expropriate those not in conflict with GOP principles, [such as] reverse discrimination against white folks." (syndicated column, 2/25/89)

I lay the blame for not nipping the Buchanan outrage immediately in the bud on the shoulders of Dan Abrams. He clearly had no balls to challenge Buchanan - OH, that's right - he HAS NO BALLS! Below the belt?? Yes it is and intended so because he did nothing when Buchanan brought us back to the racist 40's and Dan went along on the ride. Dump Buchanan!

I agree with you totally. The far left is getting way out of hand and needs to reign it in.

News flash: Pat Buchanan is a racist, sexist dork. Alert the presses. No, seriously, he's always been like that. He was like that when he ran for President, nothing's changed.

I don't think he lost his cool. He simply told her to shut up for a minute. Is this racist ? I don't see how.

rbe,

let me help you out here, one WASP to another. Back in the days of slavery, a Black person dared NOT "interrupt "a White, dared NEVER "interrupt" their master, and was often savagely punished if they did, usually by the lash. Note that in the Southern White population "interrupt" was interpreted as "saying anything that the White listener didn't want to hear" as a matter of course, and "speaking to the master before being spoken to."

After Emancipation, the same situation remained, just in a slightly more covert fashion under Segregation and the Jim Crow laws, but the end result of a Black person being "uppity" as defined by the White racist majority of the antebellum Southern states remained. Note that "uppity" resulted in *whipping* during slavery, and *whipping* and possible *lynching* after Emancipation, well into the 20th century.

Bear in mind that this situation was designed to allow a small, aggressive White minority to continue to justify their repression of Black Americans for no other excuse than the colour of their skins.

While lynchings and whippings would now most likely result in prosecution and a prison sentence for any perpetrators -as well it should!- there are still a shrinking yet vocal and at times *aggressive* minority of Whites such as Pat Buchanan who cannot bring themselves to accept the idea of a person of colour (1) having an opinion of their own, (2) having an opinion of t heir own that contradicts creatures such as Buchanan, (3) dare to express that contrary opinion in public, and to their faces, (4) stand up for their contradictory opinion with honesty and empirical evidence that contradicts and challenges the listeners' defense of their perceived privileged position and otherwise intellectually dishonest and morally bankrupt policies and deeds, and/or those of the public figures they defend.

Pat was clearly out of control of the argument when he snapped, and for one so vested in his intellectual dishonesty as he is, Buchanan cannot countenance anything that creates cognitive dissonance in his arrogant pea of a brain. I suspect that Buchanan actually believes in his mind that he is no racist, being so completely blinded by his twisted reasoning in defense of the intellectually dishonest and morally bankrupt cause he supports.

Clear things up a bit?

Ever notice when Pat Buchanan is attempting to make a point in which he fervently believes that his voice gets higher and higher? Frequently an unapologetic racist, on Dan Abrams' show the other night he sounded like a strangled parrot...the more he disagreed, the more he screeched. Please, someone at NBC, get that man lessons in voice. It's too late for his politics or his manners.

Anyone who thinks Bill O'Reilly is more fair and balanced than Keith Olbermann is insane. O'Reilly is a liar and a demagogue
