Pennsylvania Debate: Clinton Agrees

UPDATE: Obama has now agreed to the Pennsylvania debate. Plus, he's accepted another debate in North Carolina:

Sen. Hillary Clinton's campaign has accepted ABC's invitation for a 4/16 debate in Philadelphia.

So has Obama -- but he's also accepted a debate for 4/19 in North Carolina, one hosted by Katie Couric and Bob Scheiffer of CBS News.

Hillary Clinton has agreed today to attend a debate in Philadelphia. The Obama camp has not said yet whether they will agree.

Read Clinton's memo:

The Clinton campaign today announced that Hillary has accepted an invitation to participate in a primetime debate hosted by ABC. The debate will be held in Philadelphia, PA in advance of the April 22nd Pennsylvania primary. The debate will be broadcast statewide and nationally.

Hillary is prepared to show she has real solutions for the problems facing residents of the Keystone State.

Hillary is the only candidate with a plan to end the housing crisis and help people keep their homes. Hillary's plan takes bold action to stem the tide of foreclosures with a 90-day moratorium on foreclosures and a five year freeze on interest rates for subprime mortgages.

Hillary is also the only candidate with a health care plan that covers every American. Her plan allows for maximum flexibility while making sure health care costs are affordable for working families.

Hillary hears the voices of Americans concerned about their future and is focused on providing solutions to the problems they face.

Check out Huffpost's coverage of the Pennsylvania primary.

Good.
The more discussion of issues effecting us all, the better.
As far as I am concerned, they should have discussions/debates after a nominee is selected, and after a president is elected. We need something much better than a president who makes decisions without the public having any real idea of what the president is thinking.
Bush's press conferences have been mostly propaganda mills, devoid of the give and take of a discussion.

These debates are more tolerable if you read HP's blogs on them. Neither BHO nor HRC speak as rapidly as some of us can read a transcript of a debate, analysis or a summary of a debate. I plan to miss listening to or watching the debates as usual. Print always beats the ever so slow audio.

"Senator Clinton, do I have your permission to ask you the first question? I promise it will be about healthcare, and if you let me ask you the first question more than once, I promise to shut off Senator Obama's microphone everytime he tries to mention your vote on Iraq".

WORD from Bill Clinton's former counsel:

Craig: The point that I am making is that her claims of the nature of that experience are overstated. The fact is she did not sit in on national security meetings. She did not have a security clearance. She did not attend meetings in the situation room. She conducted no negotiations. She did not manage any part of the national security bureaucracy. She did not have her own national security staff. That's the fact. Now the experience that she did have -- watching and sometimes sitting in the room where discussions were going on and also meeting heads of state and foreign ministers -- that is good experience, and it's invaluable to understanding how the world works when it comes to international organizations as well as international negotiations.

It is known that ABC is in the bag for Clinton, think Stephanopolus and the Como, so watch for the favoritism poised towards Clinton, who of course will play the gender victim card in her favor.

The only one I trust at ABC is Charlie Gibson, who seems to be a man of honor and integrity and will make every effort to have a fair debate. A debate of fairness is all we ask.

This is absolutely ridiculous.

These will be debates #21 and 22. That is at least 27 hours of footage for any viewer to review. It's pointless to watch them debate for 45 minutes on an insignificant dispute as to how to attain universal health-care, and pander to the individual states only to retract the statement a week later.

"We love NAFTA" in Texas, but "We hate NAFTA in Ohio." They are both guilty of this and insults the intelligence of all that watch.

Here's an idea: let Geraldine Ferraro debate Jeremiah Wright - in a tub of grape jelly. THAT I will watch.

I live in a suburb of Philadelphia. Our county paper has a feature where people can call in anonymously and the paper will print what they say. Yesterday someone called in reminding republicans they can register as democrats and vote for Hillary in the primary and then re-register as republicans for the fall. The republicans want Hillary as the nominee. They dont want to run against Obama. The newspaper screens these calls. I cant believe that they printed this Limbaugh strategy crap. I hope someone asks Hillary about this during the Pa. debate.

Frickin' weasels!!! BASH!!!

So if there is going to be a debate I want to ask" How is it you called Obama on his past association with Rezca and You andBill have taken donations in the past from Rezca and have not returned all those donations"? I also want to know if she is willing to " return 170,000 from the ill. accounting firm that is know under Fed investigation for sexual harrasment, sexual assualt and berating women in the work place"?

I'm sorry, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was the Clinton campaign which is the originator of this strategy. She is showing she will do most anything to win.

NO! NO MORE DEBATES! WHAT IS THE POINT?! We already know everything we need to know about each of their positions on all the issues.

Instead: DUEL IN PENNSYLVANIA

PISTOLS IN NORTH CAROLINA

Even 500 rummy would be more interesting...

Obama should have said what you have said. A great big NO. Now he looks weak again, following her lead. Again. Perception is everything. Every time she snaps her fingers for a debate, he shows up. Not good. He needs to take the lead, from here on out and in all things.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:43 AM on 03/14/2008

I think you are putting way too much into that. Only the tiniest fraction of Americans follow the race as closely as do you, and only a fraction of us see him as weakened by agreeing to debate, I certainly do not.

You really need to remember that fully a quarter of the 120million Americans who will vote in Nov could not name all three of the remaining major candidates.

Yeah, but she looses control of herself and her emotions more and more in each debate. It is in his favor to be agreeable on this. He's just giving her enough rope to hang herself. He sits there competely unflappable, while she looks as if she is going to reach right out of skin to choke him.
It's the same thing as the Al Gore "sigh and roll your eyes" efftect. People don't like to see it.
Obama just gets better with each debate.
If he said no, people would think he was afraid anyways.
It might be good for the voters of PA to se them side by side as well. I hope this whole fiasco ends soon.
Let's move on to more diplomatic relations -
in the Democratic Party,
in the USA
and Internationaly.

The debates aren't really "debates" anyway. Does Hillary ever really answer a single question she's asked? They should just be called "Propaganda Opportunities".

They aren't staged for us, they're sought by Hillary to give her free exposure and another opportunity to try another attack on Obama.

However, as I said below, I think they will backfire on Hillary from now on. The more you see her phony open-mouth smile, how can you not be reminded of "SHAME!" and "3am" and "celestial choirs".

I mean, people are going to ask themselves, "Do I really want four straight years of this schizophrenia?"

Look at your first two paragraphs. That is what I mean (see below in a reply to you).
Accomodating Hillary. Aren't really debates anyway. Sought bve her. Free exposure.
Obama needs to say as much, though with subtlety, and then say there are far more important things to do, that any more debates are wasting the voter's time.
He needs to take the lead and not be accomodating Hillary, it doesn't look presidential to be doing that.
He is passive.

Oh, stuff it, would you? You have been fighting with different posters for 2 days, then you apologized when you signed off last night, then when I came on today you were after BGAE, etc. And until you apologize for questioning my support of Obama all because I---like lots of other Obama supporters on this site---don't agree with you that he has it sewed up, stay away from me. And I wasn't exaggerating, I was cutting up, like I always do---and like you know I always do. Yesterday someone questioned your willingness to protest something or other, and you took the huff! I think it was AdLib. Then you turn around today and start in on me. What a little hypocrite. I was just raising some points, but because you didn't like them....stay away until you grow up, please.

You are the one that is paranoid. Someone just barely questioned your willingness to stage a protest yesterday, and you flipped. I wasn't angry at anyone. I see why some Hillary supporters think Obama supporters are a cult, though. People like you who, when someone disagrees with you, start throwing mud. Questioning their support of Obama, or saying they are paranoid and angry all because they feel strongly about something. Switch sides, I don't think Obama needs extremists like you.

Hillary does not have anything new to offer and that is why she has stooped so low to an attack mode to divide this country, to win at any cost dragging down the democratic party with her. I can't stand watching two days of debate with this monster.

Yes, but why doesn't the party DO something about Hillary then? What are they waiting for? Are they going to wait until the Dem. party looks as if it's condoning all her race-baiting moves, by its' silence and unwillingness to take her aside? Great! THAT should help us in November. I fully agree with you that she has nothing new to offer; I wonder if you agree with me that the party looks weak---too weak to govern?---by letting one woman in it run amok like this.

anyone who thinks al gore has any clout to tell hillary to quit is crazy. no one in the party can tell her to drop out. there is no goldwater to hillary's nixon. gore, pfffff, who would gore be in this party if not for bill clinton? he tried running for president in 1988, and after everyone finished laughing, he dropped his bid. he was a going-nowhere senator who got as far as he did because of his dad. until clinton plucked him out of thin air, gore was a nobody. so who else you say? ted kennedy? hahaha no chance. first, he is biased because he endorsed obama, and second, he challenged a sitting president and went all the way to conventon bashing him all the way. he is in no position to open is mouth. kerry? nope, he lost, the clintons are winners, he has zero credibility with them. jimmy carter? well maybe if he wasn't the worst democratic president ever he could, but no, not when she is married to the far more successful democratic president. speaker pelosi or leader reid? ahahhahahahahahaha might as well throw in chairman dean and make it a loser trifecta with those two. can you imagine howard freaking dean telling the clintons what to do. this time, the dean scream will because bill clinton just threw him out of a window. in the end, only bill has the stature in the party to tell her to quit, and he wouldn't dare. after everything he's done to her, he better just stay supportive and be quiet, and really do you think he can even deal with the idea of living with her if she loses? yikes! he is gonna fight harder then she will. face it guys, no one can tell her to quit. NO ONE. only one person can do the job, barack obama. he must beat her, soundly and convincingly. nothing else will do. she will not give him the nod. he has to take it from her. he failed in new hampshire. he failed on super tuesday. he failed in ohio and texas. looks like he will fail in pennsylvania, and again and again in a michigan/florida re-do. that leaves one last battlefield: denver. he's gonna have to win the convention floor fight, rally the superdelegates in a huge bloc, or give a speech ala 'the west wing' that gets all the delegates together on the second or third ballot. he's gonna have to beat her, not lead her. until he does, she's going nowhere.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:53 AM on 03/14/2008

What failure? Hew Hampshire, she did what she had to do. Super Tuesday? That was HER knockout day except he beat her. Ohio & Texas? Tip your hat on Ohio, she took a state with very favorable demographics and played them to the hilt. Barack won the Texas delegates so he prevented her from winning both states. Besides, she needed to win big in both an didn't.

Pennsylvania is her fire wall, not his. You're parroting the Clinton talking points and supporting her moving of the goal line. That's the media's job.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:31 AM on 03/14/2008

he could have ended the race, is the point. the media was prepared to declare her candidacy dead after NH, but he blew it. he had incredible momentum but could not win it. super tuesday she won every big state she needed to. had he won california or massachusetts or new jersey she would have been hurt big time. she won ohio and texas. the delegate allocation due to the caucus only strenghtens her undermining of the caucus system. she beat him by hundreds of thousands of votes in the primary, it makes the caucuses look undemocratic. yes they are her firewall states, the key is beating her in her firewall states so she is knocked out before convention. he is not doing that. he is losing every time she moves the goal post. didnt you get that? this idea that having a small lead in delegates is going to force her out before convention is silly. he cant win 2025 until convention. you do know that candidates have come from behind and won at convention? if he doesnt knock her out in one of her firewalls, this goes to denver and a nasty floor fight.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:05 AM on 03/14/2008

He has beat her, soundly and convincingly.

She has had only one day in this entire campaign in which she has gained more delegates than he has, and on that day she had a margin of victory of five delegates, out of 370 to fight over.

Which does not compare well to Potomac Tuesday, three primaries, half red, half blue, and he got more then 2 to 1 in delegates on that night.

Oh, he has kicked her kiester on many occasions.

and? that means exactly nothing in denver. ask eugene mcarthy how much a delegate lead means going into a convention. i guess woodrow wilson should have done what obama supporters would have told him, and drop out because he wasn't leading going into convention. she is going to add pennsylvania to her wins along with michigan and florida after their redos. along with those redos comes another 54 super delegates. following that will be an edwards endorsement and his 25 delegates. by then the popular vote will be almost equal if not in her favor, with the last primary and last momentum builder in puerto rico giving her a huge victory. i know you wish it was over, just like those eugene fans from '68, but its not. just ask elliot spitzer how fast things can change. the clintons are fully vetted, more then any candidate. is barack? nope.

Interesting insider story about the three Senators return to the Hill today. Check out the link:

"In his recent appearances in the Senate chamber, Mr. Obama is often surrounded by the two senators from North Dakota, Kent Conrad and Byron Dorgan, both of whom have endorsed him. Indeed, he was chatting with them when Mr. Reid the majority leader came up behind him and jokingly body-checked Mr. Obama, knocking him slightly off balance. Mr. Obama then put an arm around the leader’s shoulder. Mr. Obama has also spent a lot of time during his recent appearances on the Senate floor conversing with Senator Barbara Boxer of California, who has yet to back a candidate. At one point, Mr. Obama playfully tapped the much shorter Ms. Boxer several times on the head of with a rolled up batch of papers that he was carrying."
