SNL Boss Sees Pro-Hillary Bias As "Major Concern

The New York Times' Bill Carter reports:

Lorne Michaels has an answer to the political columns, cartoons and comments that have accused his show, "Saturday Night Live," of favoring Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton during her primary showdown with Senator Barack Obama: Nope.

"I'm in show business and I never, ever forget that," Mr. Michaels said in a telephone interview on Tuesday night. "We put on a comedy show."

Or as Jim Downey, the "SNL" writer who has created all of the recent political sketches on the show -- and most of its famous ones going back two decades -- put it on Wednesday, "I'm just trying to make the sketches funny."

Read the entire New York Times article here.

The Los Angeles Times' Matea Gold writes:

For three decades, "Saturday Night Live" has prided itself on skewering politicians of all stripes with equal zeal, from Chevy Chase's clumsy Gerald Ford to Darrell Hammond's sighing Al Gore.

Executive producer Lorne Michaels has long maintained that the show risks its comedy credentials if it appears partisan. So he is troubled by the recent chatter that the venerable late-night program has exhibited a pro- Hillary Clinton bent.

"That's a major concern," Michaels said. "I can assure you that there's no agenda, that there's only a reaction to what's going in the world."

Personally I believe Lorne is more pro-look-at me more than pro-Hillary. Tina Fey and Amy are pro-Hillary, Lorne just liked the all the media attention from the 1st debate skit and Tina Fey's piece and like most of SNL's skits didn't know when it was going on for too long.

SNL used to be funny, back when they had some real talent. Now it's pretty much irrelevant. Are they pro-Clinton? Seems like it from where I sit.

I was called in to see Tracy Morgan's bit last night, and it was was great, no doubt. Some people even said he was at his best in the "Black is the new President" bit. But unfortunately what could have been a decent attempt to rehabilitate themselves rings hollow because SNL is going to RE-AIR the Tina Fey-Clinton Obama smear NEXT WEEK. Unbelievably poor judgement.

This idea that Lorne is "concerned," yet is RE-AIRING that episode, just doesn't fit. If he still has the power, why isn't he doing something about it. If he doesn't have the power, is this "concern" just spin? This scheduled re-air confirms their bias. Those pieces should never air again. Get a better Obama and get one quick, one that is an actual parody that at least shows some of his positives, not some weak, hastily invented character that has nothing to do with Obama but is every bit designed to fit Clinton's portrayal of him. And then WRITE SOME NEW MATERIAL, but don't re-air the biggest mistake to ever appear on SNL.

If they re-air this, they will truly have gone down the road of the disastrous comedy attempts like the Faux News Channel's "Half-hour News Hour" and Dennis Miller's excruciatingly awful show, both of which failed because they had a dishonest political agenda, and therefore never found the soul of comedy, which is at least based on a kernel of truth. SNL's portrayals of both Obama and Clinton were completely fabricated to support Clinton's whispering campaign. The powers that be have thrown a lot of our icons under the bus to hold onto power. SNL could just be one more casualty of that. Either way, it is short sighted.

One explanation: In media circles there is the sense that the MSM is attempting to forge our choice down to either the Clintons or McCain, because Bill signed the Telecom Act of 1996 that gave them the ability to buy up stations and create monopolies, which has degraded the news function of the MSM and allowed them to control the message in their interest, and they want to continue expanding. That is why they've been so well behaved and toed the Bush line, to get the kinds of FCC rulings that help them expand. And we now know McCain has secret relationships with female media lobbyists, and his campaign is mostly run by lobbyists now.

I was on the fence but feeling my radar start to go up -- that is until I read that Amy Poehler, who plays Clinton refused to include a 'cry' in one of the skits - saying it went 'too far'. This was a true WTF moment for me. So all of Lorne's protestations to the contrary ring a tad hollow.
They have no qualms about putting an actor in blackface - but portraying a real moment that actually occurred in this campaign that is ripe for satire is nixed?!? This is very Alice in Wonderland to me - much like the Clinton campaign - in the rabbit-hole, up is down and white is black (no pun intended there).

They need to just stick to making fun of Republicans if they can't find a way to make fun of the Dems equally.

The "McCain is crazy old" bit was hilarious. WTB more of that.

Yeah. I can't look at her the same any more. And it is not about what she said, it is that the show and the cast and everyone who participated somehow thought it was OK to do it right before the election. And not even just to pump up HIllary, but to give a very weak portrayal of Obama that showed none of his strengths. Very, very biased, and inexcusable considering what is at stake in our country, to trash the democratic front runner, knowing the right wing Canadian Government and Media, and the MSM overall, and Dittoheads and other factions were all piling on, they piled on, too. They KNOW Clinton is lying her ass off as well. It's just not funny.

When you consider the white guy that "PLAYS" Obama on SNL and the program being a Hillary commerical for a few weeks, Tina Fey's yell out for Hillary tell me if there is a problem on SNL. I have not liked the sow for eons but what is the gain when it is obvious that Hillary used and abused the time to get higher votes. I doesn't take a math giant to see that.

You should watch MSNBC and CNN in the daytime. It's pathetically biased toward Clinton. Keith Olbermann gives some relief to that, but you can tell he is being reigned in a little, too, unfortunately. He gets to make his commentary, but he has to put on some commentators like Craig Crawford who are obviously pro-Hillary, and treat them as though they are "objective." Also, watch Nora O'Donnell slip in Hillaryspeak whenever she can. There are a number of others who let Hillary disinformation go by unchallenged as well, even playing into her characterizations of Obama.

As an example, consider the little coverage across the news spectrum of the fact that it was CLINTON that called to reassure the Canadians about NAFTA, NOT Obama. The right wing Canadian Gov't and media, along with our Clinton biased right-wing controlled MSM whipped that one up for us right before Ohio and Texas, but didn't downspin it afterwards. They mostly let it lie. No pun intended.

And as to the posters here... I think many of us, now pro-Obama, started out biased probably towards Hillary... the Clinton presidency is the one shining victory we've had for decades, so to speak. But her campaign was so disingenous, so clearly pandering to whatever constituency she was talking to at the moment, and so clearly intentionally divisive, that I believe many of us, myself included, found her more and more unpalatable. And let's not even talk about the money... the one thing McCain once had right is the corrosive power of money in politics, and the Clintons now, clearly, are deep in the trough. Contrast that with an intelligent, genuine, honest, capable, visionary leader who, in addition, had the courage to speak out against that war before it was politically acceptable, and who is clearly an inspiring leader able to speak to both sides of the aisle?

So yes, I'm pro-Obama. The difference is, it's on the merits.

Thanks that people have seen SNL for what they are and have been to Hillary. It is the same for CNN except for Cafferty. The media did all subtle manipulations it could to get Hillary to win Ohio and Texas.
Obama was demonized for the whole of that week. CNN was as much interested as Hillary in getting voters in Ohio and Texas to remember Obama's ties to Rezko. They played the NAFTA gate against Obama when if verified can be traced to Hillary's Campaign. CNN downplayed the Canadian Embassy's refutal that at least put Obama in the clear, reporting it after reporting the damageful aspect. What is certain is that Obama is not liked by the people that want business as usual in Washington. It is sad that the Press is being used to perpetrate the dynasty of the Clintons. It is the same press with CNN as the worst culprit that is finding it difficult to report who won Texas. Candi Crawley still credits Hillary as winner in Texas while Wolf Blitzer paints in stripped Blue colour on Texas to differentiate the 2 contests that took place there. But Texas is not 2 states. Its contest is known as the Texas 2 Step. It is one contest. The person with more delegates won Texas. Obama won Texas. The colour for Wolf Blitzer should become dark blue. It is a big state and Obama won it.
Obama's wins should be looked at and not diminished as the Clintons are doing as if they were not on the ballot in all those states. Obama with 1600+ pledged delegates is the front runner, no amount of bias by SNL and CNN can make Hillary overtake him. These two mainstream press should adjust to reality because the World is watching what you do.

True about SNL and (sadly) CNN. Assigning Crowley to Obama is like having a fifth column there. She has always been SO pro Republican. She'll spin for Hillary now, following the party line, but her anti-Obama slant to every story is wearing.

I agree completely about their map of Texas. Hopefully when the caucus results are finalized they will get rid of the cross--hatching and show it as an Obama win.

CNN reporters and anchors seem to feel their demonstrating some kind of journalistic skills whenever they attack Obama, for whatever reason. Cooper was pounding away about his minister last night. It was ridiculous.

Thank God for Jack Cafferty, the lone voice of sanity over there. I even like Blitzer more because-- bland and pro-establishment as he always seems--he DOES apparently value having a fresh, dissenting perspective which Cafferty provides. (And Jack's choice of "viewer letters" are always refreshingly blunt.).

REMINDER....OBAMA WON MORE DELEGATES IN TEXAS!!!!

Therefore OBAMA actually "won" Texas. Nothing else counts. The popular vote wasn't significant enough to be pscologically important. ONLY the delegates count.
So, OBAMA won Texas.

What are you talking about? The press has done nothing but give her pass after pass. Do you really think that if Obama had lost 11 states after Feb 5 that they wouldn't be calling it over? The MSM has done everything in its power to keep her in the race and will for as long as they can.

The skits seem equal opportunity to me and are fairly funny. I have no problem there but Lorne need not pretend that Tina Fey's clear endorsement of Hillary was anything but a clear endorsement of Hillary. That endorsement stands in my eyes as one from Saturday Night Live. I did not see an attempt at humor other than to provide an "in your face" moment for anyone who thinks Hillary is a bitch. Maybe it is because I never saw Tina Fey as very funny.

"I'm just trying to make the sketches funny."

It's just... He should ratchet up the quality control. I think they tried to make it clear in last week's opener that Obama was portrayed that way because it was a Hillary ad, thus making an attempt at removing bias... they just didn't do a particularly good job of making it ring true, and therefore funny.

SNL boss should be concerned. The LA Times reported today that SNL producers contributed more than $10,000 to Clinton's campaign. I would think that is a conflict of interest.

Also, Time Warner/CNN has still not explained the major contributions to Clinton's campaign either?????

I guess the media is going to try to tip the election and sadly the people who are uneducated will buy into it.

Let me repeat again SNL just isn't funny. It has nothing to do with who I support politically.

The political satire group The CAPITAL STEPS who make fun of all sides, Democrats, Republicans, Bush, Cheney, Gore, Clinton & OBAMA, now they ARE funny...they are hysterical.

SNL isn't funny. It is shockingly UNFUNNY!!!! AND BIASED against OBAMA!!!!

No, SNL just wasn' funny. I have four children (21-33) and they can't watch SNL either. It' s not cleaver humor it is school yard and corny.

Now The Capital Steps, they are funny and they knock all sides of the political scale so it can be done.

SNL had one funny skit that I saw on the Internet (New Black etc) which was OK, but it wasn't good enough to make me tune into SNL.

Nothing else has been remotely humerous. Boring stuff. Ratings will take a dive on SNL and MSNBC. Just watch.

I've been a big fan of SNL since its inception, even through the dry years. That being said, Lorne Michaels has good reason to be concerned.

They blew it. Caught in short-term corporate profit, shareholder value thinking, the MSM thinks its bread is buttered on the Clinton-McCain side because of those candidates' entrenchment with lobbyists, as evidenced by the latest McCain tryst with a Telecom lobbyist and his many lobbyist campaign advisors, and by Bill Clinton's policies that set up the problems we have now with NAFTA, Telecom Monopolies, etc., ostensibly with Hillary's help and blessing if you believe her claim of relevancy as a first lady, and her behavior as that of a republican mole.

But in the long view, the MSM and in fact all businesses will be better off with Obama, because he has shown he makes informed decisions based on reality rather than self-aggrandizement as in the case of the Clintons and McCain. This attitude in a leader makes the country itself more healthy overall. Clinton and McCain will continue to kill the goose that lays the golden egg, as Bush has done, but Obama will make choices more likely to restore the goose to its former robust self so we can keep harvesting those golden eggs.

When there is a healthy infrastructure and an economy based on meeting the needs of both business and citizens alike as Obama has promised in his speech that everyone, business and citizens alike, will "have a place at the table" with no one having undue influence, all interests, personal and special, will thrive. From a domestic economy standpoint, this is the reason to vote for Obama. Then there are all the other reasons of foreign policy, principled and strong leadership, and the most important of all, emotional and creative intelligence.

So hopefully, Lorne, with his pull at NBC will take a good hard look at their priorities. But I have no desire to support a company or an entity or a show that is shortsightedly willing to be a part of taking down the best chance our country has had in over 40 years to heal itself and solidify its strengths to become the best nation that we all know we are capable of becoming. Not that they can stop it. But such betrayal as this will be remembered when it comes time to exercise MY influence in how I spend my TV time, in my consumer purchases from companies who advertise there and who have supported the negativity, and as regards politicians who engage in such betrayal, in the voting booth.
