Text of Keith Olbermann's "Special Comment" delivered live last night on MSNBC, decrying Hillary Clinton for the tactics of her campaign and specifically for her failure to categorically reject the remarks of Geraldine Ferraro about Barack Obama. The video may be viewed here. Transcript below:

KEITH OLBERMANN: Finally, as promised, a special comment on the presidential campaign of the junior senator from New York. By way of necessary preface, President and Senator Clinton and the senator's mother and the senator's brother were of immeasurable support to me at the moments when these very commentaries were the focus of the most surprise, the most uncertainty and the most anger. My gratitude to them is unbiding.

Also, I am not here endorsing Senator Obama`s nomination, nor suggesting in it is inevitable. Thus I have fought with myself over whether or not to say anything. Events insist.

Senator, as it has reached its apex in their tone deaf, arrogant and insensitive reaction to the remarks of Geraldine Ferraro, your own advisers are slowly killing your chances to become president. Senator, their words and your own are now slowly killing the chances for any Democrat to become president. In your tepid response to this Ferraro disaster, you may sincerely think you disenthralling an enchanted media and righting an unfair advance bestowed on Senator Obama. You may think the matter has closed with Representative Ferraro's bitter, almost threatening resignation letter.

But, in fact, senator, you are now campaigning as if Barack Obama were the Democrat and you were the Republican. As Shakespeare wrote, senator, "that way madness lies." You have missed a critical opportunity to do what was right. No matter what Miss Ferraro now claims, no one took her comments out of context. She had made them on at least there separate occasions, then twice more on television this morning. Just hours ago, on "NBC Nightly News," she denied she had made the remark in an interview, only at a paid political speech.

In fact, the first time she spoke them was 10 days before that California newspaper published them, not in a speech, but in a radio interview. On February 26, quoting, "if Barack Obama were a white man, would we be talking about this as a potential real problem for Hillary. If he were a woman of any color, would he be in this position that he's in? Absolutely not."

The content was inescapable. Two minutes earlier, a member of Senator Clinton's finance committee, one of her Hill-Raisers had bemoaned the change in allegiance by super delegate John Lewis from Clinton to Obama and also the endorsement of Obama by Senator Dodd; "I look at these guys doing it," she had said, "and I have to tell you, it`s the guys sticking together."

A minute after the color remark, she was describing herself as having been chosen for the 1984 Democratic ticket purely as a woman politician, purely to make history. She was, in turn, making a blind accusation of sexism and dismissing Senator Obama`s candidacy as nothing more than some equal opportunity stunt.

Story continues below
advertisement

The next day, she repeated her comments and a reporter from the newspaper in Torrence, California heard them; "If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position. If he was a woman of any color, he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is and the country is caught up in the concept."

And when this despicable statement, ugly in its overtones, laughable in its week grip of the facts, and moronic in the historical context, when it floats outward from the Clinton campaign like a poison cloud, what do the advisers have their candidate do? Do they have Senator Clinton herself compare the remark to Al Campanis (ph) talking on "Nightline" on Jackie Robinson Day about how blacks lack the necessities to become baseball executives, while she points out that Barack Obama has not gotten his 1600 delegates as part of some kind of affirmative action plan?

Do they have Senator Clinton note that her own brief period in elected office is as irrelevant to the issue of judgment as is Senator Obama's, while she points out that FDR had served only six years as governor and state senator before he became president? Or that Teddy Roosevelt had four and a half years before the White House? Or that Woodrow Wilson had two years and six weeks?

Or Richard Nixon 14? And Calvin Coolidge 25?

Do these advisers have Senator Clinton invoke Samantha Power, gone by sunrise after she used the word monster, and have Senator Clinton say, this is how I police my campaign, and this is what I stand for, while she fires former Congresswoman Ferraro from any role in the campaign? No, somebody tells her that simply disagreeing with, then rejecting the remarks is sufficient. She should then call regrettable words that should make any Democrat retch.

And that she should then try to twist them, first into some pox on both your houses plea to stick to the issues, and then to let her campaign manager try to bend them beyond all recognition into Senator Obama's fault. And thus these advisers give Congresswoman Ferraro nearly a week in which to send Senator Clinton`s campaign back into the vocabulary of David Duke; "anytime anybody does anything that in any way pulls this campaign down and says, let`s address reality and the problems we're facing in this world, you`re accused of being racist, so you have to shut up. Racism works in two different directions. I really think they are attacking me because I'm white. How's that?"

How's that? Apart from sounding exactly like Rush Limbaugh attacking the black football quarterback Donovan McNab, apart from sounding exactly like what Miss Ferraro said about another campaign nearly 20 years ago, quote, "President Reagan suggested Tuesday that people don't ask Jesse Jackson tough questions because of his race. Former Representative Geraldine A. Ferraro said Wednesday that because of his, quote, radical views, if Jesse Jackson were not black, he would not be in the race."

So apart from sounding like insidious racism that is at least two decades old, apart from rendering ridiculous Senator Clinton`s shell game about choosing Obama as vice president, apart from this evenings resignation letter; "I am stepping down from your finance committee so I can speak for myself and you can continue to speak for yourself about what is at stake in this campaign. The Obama campaign is attacking me to hurt you."

Apart from all that, well, it sounds as if those advisers wanted their campaign to be associated with those words, and the cheap, ignorant, vile racism that underlies every syllable of them, and that Geraldine Ferraro has just gone freelance.

Senator Clinton, that is not a campaign strategy. This is a suicide pact. This week alone, your so-called strategists have declared that Senator Obama has not yet crossed some commander in chief threshold, but he might still be your choice to be vice president, even though a quarter of
the previous 16 vice presidents have become commander in chief during the greatest kind of crisis this country can face, a midterm succession, but you only pick him if he crosses that threshold by the time of the convention.

But if he does cross that threshold by the time of the convention, he will only have done so sufficiently enough to become vice president, not president? Senator, if the serpentine logic of your so-called advisers were not bad enough, now thanks to Geraldine Ferraro and your campaigns initial refusal to break with her, and your new relationship with her, now more disturbing still with her claim that she can now speak for herself about her vision as Senator Obama as some kind of embodiment of a quota if she wishes.

If you were to seek Obama as a vice president, it would be to Miss Ferraro some called of social engineering gesture, some kind of racial make good. Do you not see, senator?

To Senator Clinton`s supporters, to her admirers, to her friends for whom she is first choice and to her friends for whom she is second choice, she is still letting herself be perceived as standing next to and standing by racial divisiveness and blindness. Worse yet, after what President Clinton said during the South Carolina primary, comparing the Obama and Jesse Jackson campaigns, a disturbing but only border line remark, after what some in the black community have perceived as a racial undertone to the 3:00 a.m. ad, a disturbing but only borderline interpretation, and after the moments hesitation in her own answer on "60 Minutes" about Obama's religion, a disturbing but only borderline vagueness -- after those precedents, there are those who see a pattern. False or true, they see it. After those precedents, there are those who see an intent. False or true, they see it. After those precedents, there are those that see the Clinton campaign`s anything but benign neglect of the Ferraro catastrophe, falsely or truly, as a desire to hear the kind of casual prejudice which still haunts the society voiced, and to not distance the campaign from it.

To not distance you from it, Senator. To not distance you from that which you, as a woman, and Senator Obama, as an African-American, should both know and feel with the deepest of personal pain, which you should both fight with all you have, which you should both ensure has no place in this contest ever.

This, Senator Clinton, is your campaign and it is your name. Grab the reigns back from whoever has led you to this precipice before it is too late. Voluntarily or inadvertently, you are still awash in this filth. Your only reaction has been to disagree, reject, to call it regrettable. Her only reaction has been to brand herself as the victim and resign from your committee and insist she will continue to speak. Unless, senator, you say something definitive, the former congresswoman is speaking with your
approval.

You must remedy this and you must reject and denounce Geraldine Ferraro. Good night and good luck.

All the good ole boys with their anti-Hillary rants. they are just so overpowering. when we sat down to watch coverage of the latest tuesday primary- the airwaves reeked of misogyny- hoards of men spewing vitriol about Hillary-- with usually one token black man in the mix- waxing about Obama.
This is a democracy? this is what we're exporting & preaching to the rest of the world?
the media in this country is an embarassment. never thought I'd include keith olberman in this mix.
sad.

I was a diehard John Edwards supporter up until yesterday, but as I am getting more and more irritated by the MEDIA Obama smooch fest coninciding with the Clinton annihilation fest, I am leaning more towards Senator Clinton.

I thought if you're the frontrunner you have to take the punches as they come. That's what they told Hillary Clinton when EVERYONE was Ganging up on her. I guess those "RULES" don't apply if you're Barack Obama. SNL had it right!!!!!

As a political junkie, I have tuned out, and will only begin paying attention again if and when I start hearing some ISSUE-DRIVEN information from the candidates.

and as for Olbermann, he should be ashamed of himself for being apart of this OVER the TOP, anti-Hillary commentary. HE went WAY TOO FAR OVER THE LINE.

I hope this comment appears, as several of my other "moderate" HONEST comments were rejected.

I suspect you are not only a Hillary fan but it sounds like you work on the staff. Support your candidate! You don't need to hide behind John Edwards. Stand up and be proud and donate a few dollars while you are at it. Personally, I'm supporting OBAMA.

You complain about "ganging up" on Hillary. Enough of the victim card. You can't pity your way into the White House. Tell her to take it like a woman. She says she is the front runner (VP offer to Obama comments in Mississippi) so she needs, in your words, "to take the punches". Keith Olbermann is sooooo good in his commentary. He could denounce the telephone book and I would be cheering.

However, thanks for the issues driven comment. You are so right. Now move away from the computer and calm down. Tomorrow is another day.

What an hysterical, rabid rant. Somewhat better-controlled than Matthews, but that's no great accomplishment. Watched with alternating fascination and disgust his clumsy guilt-by-association Clinton-bashing, musing that the pro-Obama moonbeamers, the sexist male Obama supporters, the indignant black Obama voters, the guilt-ridden non-black Obama backers, and the other "true believers" in the Obama "cause" were really getting that "tingle up their legs" as he piously claimed not to be attacking Clinton, just "these tactics" that are (sob!) tearing the Democrat Party apart. What a drama queen--if there's a category on some awards show for Best Drama Disguised as a News or Opinion Program, he wins hands-down. Seriously, though, if you're going to revel in this sort of false piety and phony indignation over a trumped-up tempest-in-a-teapot, go ahead. But having your position "validated" by Olberman on TV is not exactly a scientific triumph.

Ferraro is guilty of only one thing: being "politically incorrect" when stating her opinion about why Obama is in the position he's in, when stating that he is lucky to be who he is when the country is embracing the concept of a black man as President, rather than a woman. (For a short definition of "country" see the list of Obama supporters above). And Clinton did the "politically correct" thing by disagreeing and rejecting and apologizing, Now, if you're going to continue to rag about this "race issue" and assign guilt by association to Clinton because of a campaign association with Ferraro, it is only fair and equitable (yes!) that you grill Obama about his 20-year association with his pastor, whom some have concluded just might be a racist. Looking forward to Olberman's Special Report on that topic, but don't hold your breath, since it doesn't appear "fair and equitable" are criteria applied by him in expressing his opinions on MSNBC.

Obama is doing nothing to stop this. If he was "above" all this, he could easily diffuse the situation, but he's sitting back enjoying it. He's using racism in a passive aggressive way. What's the difference?
Keith Olbermann is an idiot. I haven't watched MSNBC for several months when it became very clear they were out to ruin Clinton.

Clinton is doing fine on her own. ( ruining herself and her campaign) and I'm a life long democrat who has never voted for anyone but democrats, but this time around I will vote for someone other than a democrat if Hillary is the nominee. She has exhibitied a very troubling character flaw in the way she has run her camapign that has given me some insight to the person she really is, and that's a lot different than the person she claims to be.

It isn't difficult to research the truth about the Ferraro comments, and the Hillary campaign connection. There are clips all over the internet that dispute the media and Obama camp claims that the comments, when put IN CONTEXT were not even remotely racist. MSNBC itself had 2 highly intelligent guests speaking to it...Pat Buchanan (a Republican!), and Jonathan Capehart, an editorial journalist for the Washington Post. If you really want to speak to the subject as though you know the truth, find the courage to look for the truth.

Obama went on the air to play the victim, when he should actually have made sure his campaign ferreted out the reality of the comments and then thanked Ferraro for what she said.

So, Olbermann, who is MSNBC, as well, ignored the truthful reporting done on his own network and went on to "slice and dice" (to use Obama's own words about the campaign) Clinton while he cited fabrication and lie after fabrication and lie to justify his vile actions. Just who is Olbermann, anyway? A sports reporter?! Clearly MSNBC is not a serious news network, it's just an opinion talk show that is allowed to run off at the mouth without fact checking or decency. I'll never watch MSNBC, CNBC, or NBC again after the way they have railroaded both Clinton and Obama throughout this campaign. Anyone not positive this station is pushing for a McCain victory in November just isn't paying attention.

If John McCain (or any other Republican leader) had said, "If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position. If he was a woman of any color, he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is and the country is caught up in the concept."
and "I really think they are attacking me because I'm white. How's that?" , would you be defending him? Or would you be up in arms against him?

Apparently, you don't see the big picture here. So, I'll inform you . . . The Clintons realize that filthy, Rovian politics work. Don't take my word for it; the past eight years attest to that fact (and polls of all kinds indicate that negative campaigning WORKS . . . period). What the Clintons are doing is exactly what Rove had Bush do: Reply tepidly to a dastardly remark by the Rove Machine--or don't reply at all--because the damage has been done; all the boob-wazee electorate (i.e. Red State voters) hear is the false, racist/lying remark--and it sticks in their primitive brains. No amount of factual evidence to the contrary will change their "minds"--because they have no minds.
So, dear rojo7449, do you wonder why Clinton is doing just fine among the working class and others too involved in making a living to care about examining the facts as presented? The truth is that the Clintons have their number; they know what moves them to react. All the while they stand as paragons of virtue (except for that little mistake with Monica), proud supporters of the lower and middle classes when, in effect, they are just using them.
Problem is, Red Staters may not be as ignorant as they have been in the past; maybe--just maybe--they see through the ruse. Maybe--just maybe--the Clinton Machine tactics of late will backfire. And the old man with the cancerous cheek and political philosophy will reap the benefit.
What do you think of them apples, rojo?

Let me fill you in on how these comments are indeed racist. First, let me assure you that I believe G. F. believes that she is herself not a racist. I see no reason to doubt that, but let's look at what GF and others who agree with her are actually saying, to see where that racist charge comes in.

First, GF is suggesting that Barack Obama would not be in first place without the overwhelming support of the black voting bloc. Although I think she believes this to be true, it is patently false. Here's why.

Blacks make up only 14 % of the population. Assuming for a moment that the age breakdown between black and white are similar, let's also assume that translates to 14% of the voting public. Now let us consider the Hispanic community. It makes up slightly more percentage wise and this voting bloc is overwhelmingly in support of Hillary Clinton. Therefore, let's assume that these two cancel each other out. What is left? The white voting bloc. In this segment, about 54% of white women support Hillary, while some 80% of white men support Barack Obama.

That means, folks, that Obama wouldn't be where he is today without white men, plain and simple. Maybe GF meant to say, Obama is lucky he's a man? Would that have sounded any less charged than saying he wouldn't be where he is if he weren't a black man? It is more accurate, but no less offensive in my view. It comes from victim mentality, where everything bad that happens to you has nothing to do with you and everything to do with THEM.

I, for one, hope we are "growing out" of such weak sentiments. I don't think it is a coincidence that I see this sort of attitude only in people in their sixties and older...

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:39 PM on 03/13/2008

You almost got it with your "Obama is lucky he's a man?". Ferraro said very clearly he would not be in the position he is in if he were a WOMAN OF ANY COLOR. Obama is lucky he's a MAN running against a WOMAN. By your own analysis 80% of WHITE MEN are backing Obama, a black M-A-N. Ferraro's point is that male SEXISM trumps RACISM at this particular time. (Remember, Ferraro faced her own SEXIST opposition as the first female Veep candidate, so she knows what she is talking about). Add to that the indisputable overwhelming 90% support for Obama among black MEN and WOMEN. Why wouldn't you conclude he is lucky to be a black man running against ANY woman? That's the "luck" she's talking about. Any other interpretation is just mistaken, cynical or silly political spin. And those making racist claims are just "seeking and finding".

And I, for one, don't think your ageist remark is very intelligent.

Canadian Opposition leaders are demanding the resignation of Bill Clinton's good buddy, Ambassador Michael Wilson. It has come out that Ian Brodie leaked the information to CTV reporter David Akin that Clinton had called the Canadian embassy and told them her criticism of NAFTA was just political rhetoric. It seems Akin then turned the story over to CTV's D.C. guy, Tom Clark, who then called and interviewed Bill's buddy, Ambassador Michael Wilson in D.C. on the story. After the Clark/Wilson conversation, the CTV story presented on air morphed into something very different from what Brodie had told Akin--tit changed to it was Obama instead of Clinton who had called Wilson.

Now, PM Harper is mumbling incoherently, Wilson refuses to say what he told CTV's Tom Clark (says it was a private conversation), Ian Brodie claims he has amnesia about what he told Akin, and Joseph deMora--who recently confessed he wrote the infamous report on the Goolsbee meeting "from memory" WEEKS AFTER the event--has mysteriously left the planet...indefinitely.

Looks like Hillary's NAFTAgate might just turn into the biggest and dirtiest of all the Clinton scandals.

Hmmm, and I read that Obama, himself, finally, came clean and admitted it was his campaign that talked NAFTA with the Canadians. This might be one of those stories that just ends up in a draw....without a gate.

I guess what you didn't read was the Canadian officials "came clean" and admitted they set up the meet with Goolsbee through the University of Chicago requesting that he meet with a "private" Canadian trade delegation as a UC professor, not as Obama's economic policy advisor, and that the Embassey officials masquerading as a "private" trade delegation deliberately avoided contacting the Obama campaign about the meet because they had already been turned down on every request a meeting. Of course Obama would not have known about the meet. Why would he?

I was incredibly jazzed to watch Olbermann's Special Comment -- so much so that I missed "Ghost Hunters" and part of "Top Chef." As someone who very much would like to see this talk of racism omitted from this campaign, I realize that it is the 800-pound gorilla. So, Obama's correct in saying that he'd likely face it in the fall and facing it now is good practice. However, I was a longtime supporter of the Clintons and Ferarro, and to witness this calculated plan of attack (whether they harbor those feelings or if it's strictly strategic) disturbs me. What's encouraging is that MSNBC, which of late has suddenly turned Clinton into the media sweetheart, didn't censor Olbermann. Still, I wonder if this particular discourse is the "discussion on race" that Bill Clinton wanted to have during his presidency. If so, it's not off to a great start.
