A Final Farewell: Tucker Carlson Says Goodbye To His Show With Friends And A Look Back

Huffington Post   |  Rachel Sklar   |   March 14, 2008 09:10 PM

After four timeslot switches, a name change, two years of lackluster ratings, and one discarded bow-tie, Tucker Carlson's show on MSNBC drew to a close tonight after it was announced earlier this week that it would be replaced by an election-themed show hosted by NBC Senior White House Correspondent David Gregory. "Tucker," which was formerly known as "The Situation with Tucker Carlson" signed off with a minimum of fanfare, engaging the headlines of the day as per usual (Obama's Jeremiah Wright problem; McCain's travel abroad; who's more electable, Clinton or Obama?) and managing not to mention auto-erotic asphyxiation even once. Other than a quick mention at the top (and a chyron reading: "Welcome To Our Final Show! We've Truly Saved The Best For Last"), it was largely business as usual — except that it wasn't, and his guests let him know it.

Two rather notable aw-shucks moments stood out, courtesy of regular guest Lanny Davis and former show producer-cum-"Morning Joe" co-host Willie Geist. Davis came on to argue strenuously in favor of Hillary Clinton, as is his wont, and at the end Davis surprised Tucker with a heartfelt tribute, saying that he thought it was "unfortunate that this network has stopped this program because, for me, being able to disagree agreeably is what you stand for. I think it's a great loss for all of us." Aw. Watch:

Is it us, or did Tucker look as ferklempt as Hillary Clinton at a New Hampshire Q&A? He recovered nicely (commercial breaks help with that), and after welcoming (and receiving kudos from) the Rev. Al Sharpton, The Hill's A.B. Stoddard, the LAT's Rosa Brooks, and "Washington D.C. Mayor for Life Marion Barry ("Why? Because frankly we kind of like Marion Barry"), he was ready to head into the final segment of the show, which really was meant to be a look-back. Here he welcomed Geist, joining him from New York, for a quick trip through some of the show's greatest hits from timeslots gone bye — but not before he gave Tucker a heartfelt tribute of his own:
Suffice it to say that I wouldn't be on this show, the 6 a.m. show or any show without you, your friendship and your advocacy... If you had told me three years ago that I'd be sitting in the front row of 'Dancing With The Stars' with a vested interest, angry with the results — without irony — I would have called you a fool, but that actually happened. Hang around Tucker Carlson enough, your life will be fun, I promise you that.

Aw. Man-love is sweet. Then they went on to watch clips of animals doing funny stuff. We'll show you that clip in a moment — enjoy a long-lost flash of bow-tie! (He lost it ages ago, AP writer, sheesh) — but before you get all sad, remember that Tucker really isn't going anywhere, because he'll still be a senior MSNBC correspondent popping up across the schedule, ostensibly including in his former timeslot. (Which is why Willie Geist said "I'll see you next week.") Stil, it was an ending, and the last word was Tucker, who gave a special shout-out to Senior Producer Jamieson Lesko and Producer Alexis Vena before signing off with brevity and class: "Well that's it! That's the end of our show. We won't be joining you on Monday. We'd like to thank you for tuning in all these years and to say that, if nothing else, I've sincerely enjoyed it.... Goodnight, and have a great weekend." You too, Tucker! See you on the other side.

Wow - There is a fair amount of vitriol on the site. I used to watch Tucker on his 1/2 hour pbs show which was wonderful. I forgot the name, but I am sure some of you watched as well. He would have true intellectuals on for solid discussions. I was excited when he received a nightly show on msnbc, but my joy (and his) ended on the first evening. It was during a Michael Jackson saga with the courts and little boys. Tucker's first night and he had to talk about the depths of pop culture. He even said on the air that he doesn't know what to say because he has never addressed the issue of Michael Jackson in any serious manner. The show obviously got better from there, but the everyday media wave is no place for any serious thought. Tucker - get back to something bigger and unfortunatly that comes with a smaller paycheck.

I never could respect this prep school prettyboy. He's just another smart-alec child of privilege (the Swanson frozen food fortune in this case) blustering the right-wing party line, as if he had won his fame and wealth through even-field competition in a free market. He's just a sign of the times: take your pick: Nicole Ritchie, Mika Brezezinski, Jamie Lynn Spears, Michael Reagan, Tori Spelling, David Rockefeller, Miley Cyrus, George W. Bush, Ashley Simpson, etc, etc. They're like cartoons from a bad Ayn Rand novel. It is ridiculous to think that any of them would have gotten where they are today without their connections (read: pedigree). To paraphrase Orwell: "Do you want to imagine the future? - picture Paris Hilton's bodyguard stomping on a face forever."

I'm not a big fan of the guy, but I do like to see as much as possible all sides represented in a debate of the issues,

I don"t have to agree with them but certainly there is value expressing a different opinion.
It"s not a good that the news outlets are aligning themselves with only one point of view, that"s not journalism and won"t enlighten the us/the public to seek common ground with our fellow neighbors /citizens we might differ with.

I guess cuddle up to the TV and listen to what you feel comfortable hearing and disregard the opinions of those who may hold opposing views.

I don"t like to be fed garbage which is the direction the MSM has been going for a while, unfortunately.

Carlson says goodbye... America says good riddance.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:49 AM on 03/17/2008

The word is out that Tucker is getting a 1 hour radio show on WFAG-fm in the near future. Good luck Tucker, on blowing away the competition.

So long, Sucker!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:17 PM on 03/16/2008

MSNBC......................................................Jumped the Shark!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:06 PM on 03/16/2008

Too bad MSNBC didn't hire Al Sharpton for that slot. I don't agree with everything Sharpton says or does but I think he's fair, smart and entertaining. I'm serious. David Gregory is just as bad as Tucker.

Praise the Lord,
Your lives will be so much easier now that you are not going to be confronted with more than one view.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 06:11 AM on 03/16/2008

Does your praise include the drones who watch Fox and Beck?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:43 PM on 03/18/2008

Good riddance! Now follow up with Chris Matthews, Keith Olbermann, heck don't stop there take off the entire MSNBC. Like Fox, a waste of electricity.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:37 AM on 03/16/2008

MSNBC has become a wasteland of hacks like Matthews "Morning Joe," and now Olbermann
is on his knees to St. Obama. Olbermann with his pompous overview of himself, hawking his
books and announcing his ratings gain. This is the least watched of the cable networks.
And now many including myself - no longer watch it.
Olbermann has become a joke, in his pathetic non-stop attacks on Senator Clinton,
his worship of Obama.

tucker...what the hell kind of first name is that anyhow? Oh, it's either one of those weird Southern names, like Jackson or Major! Or maybe one of those elitist, more money than good sense, East coast establishment, Axis of Weasals--Harvard, Yale, Princeton--names, that drunk, white, rich people give their kids.

Tucker...Isn't that the Ford that failed?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:03 AM on 03/16/2008

See, he never should have ditched the simpleton bow tie look for the neo-con lite, wannabe yuppie -intellectual tie. He lost his audience.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:08 PM on 03/15/2008

Ya know, I'd praise your comment for being clever but...except not even clever.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:49 AM on 03/16/2008

I knew if I waited long enough the powers that be would realize the error of their ways. Goodbye Tucker, haul your self-important right wing ass over to Fox with all the other right-wingers and don't forget your bow ties.. Now if MSNBC would only dump Chris Matthews. I'm convinced they would like to but they can't get the loudmouthed little dummy to shut his mouth long enough to tell him he's fired.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:52 PM on 03/15/2008

Tucker,
Good Night and Good Luck!
Perhaps you will find your rewards in your next adventure.
Hopefully you will gain some compassion and a better, perhaps positive perspective!

gee dee you could be talking about keith blabberman.........

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:01 PM on 03/17/2008

Good riddance to bad rubbish! What a joke!!! And Lanny Davis is even worse!!! First, he spends years making excuses for Bill's dalliances, and now he tries to excuse Hillary's "dirty campaign!" Why do the American People have to be forced to accept DIRT???

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:34 PM on 03/15/2008

It was an interesting show and I enjoyed hearing both sides of various issues. Of course, most Liberals do not know there is a side but their own (or, if they do, don't think it should be allowed (cf global warminmongers)

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:36 PM on 03/15/2008

youre right kingcity it was fairly interesting.....................tucker gave both sides....something libs know NOTHING ABOUT...it is their way or youre a liar....or you need to issue an apology or resign...sos with every issue....except they never do it....

why is it that repubs give two sides of the issue and stations like pmsnbc and cnn give the liberal
spew............................our media sucks.................

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:38 PM on 03/15/2008

Tucker should take this as a blessing. Now he can move over to Fox and actually discover what it feels like to have an audience for his work. Rejoice Tucker........you're free.

Those of us who speak Spanglish have these words for Tucker, "Adios, mother f#cker & that goes for your silly assed bow ties too. If you are ever short of money-try selling your bow ties to the weather person on NBC's Philly station.".

I was never a fan of Carlson. He had this ridiculous way of asking questions, feigning he needed to understand the opposite point of view when it was clear nothing said would change his mind. This was very annoying. But I'll give him this much, there were times he actually made a point from the conservative perspective that was valid.

I always felt they should have kept of original concept of the show intact. I liked watching Rachael Maddox vs Jay Severin, Willie G, and Max ( can't remember the guy's last name) who used to defend the daily undefensible topic. The show had a real set, topical humor, politics etc, and was actually entertaining . . . something rare for MSNBC. With all those people surrounding him, a little bit of Tucker went a long way.

After 3 or 4 time slot changes and by the time the show landed in its final 6:00 pm slot, the show had been stripped of everything that made the original show worth a look or two. Like I said, a little bit of Tucker goes a long way.

gee sportszone...are you suggesting that dems dont do EXACTLY THAT

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:05 PM on 03/17/2008

Never had a chance. His persona was too working class. Too damned gritty.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 07:43 PM on 03/15/2008

I didn't see any value to his show and was surprised at the programming at MSNBC. They have a lot of bad programing. Regardless of how I viewed his show and his commentary, I did find his moving toward more truthful comments that were based on fact near the end and at times found some of his comments interesting and began withing him more. He is another person trying to make a buck, I wish him well and have no dog in this fight. I'm sure he's a good man doing his best to survive and wish him luck and sucess in the future

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 07:42 PM on 03/15/2008

Tucker is a train wreck.
He thinks that the LOUDER you say something the truer it becomes.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 07:08 PM on 03/15/2008

I dont agree with him much but I hate to see anyone lose their job.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 04:53 PM on 03/15/2008

Carlson's most notable contribution was in giving the estimable Dr. Rachel Maddow her first shot on cable TV -- he's no Buckley, but compared to the O'Reillys and Becks of the world he comes off pretty civil and sensible.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 04:26 PM on 03/15/2008

The only clever things I ever saw him do were call out that NZ rookie Journalist who worked for the Scotsman, regarding Power's off the record "monster" remark. The other smart thing he did was point out that Hillary Clinton is absolutely a neocon: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_pt0cIudJ0
