A Final Farewell: Tucker Carlson Says Goodbye To His Show With Friends And A Look Back

I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Tucker Farewell

After four timeslot switches, a name change, two years of lackluster ratings, and one discarded bow-tie, Tucker Carlson's show on MSNBC drew to a close tonight after it was announced earlier this week that it would be replaced by an election-themed show hosted by NBC Senior White House Correspondent David Gregory. "Tucker," which was formerly known as "The Situation with Tucker Carlson" signed off with a minimum of fanfare, engaging the headlines of the day as per usual (Obama's Jeremiah Wright problem; McCain's travel abroad; who's more electable, Clinton or Obama?) and managing not to mention auto-erotic asphyxiation even once. Other than a quick mention at the top (and a chyron reading: "Welcome To Our Final Show! We've Truly Saved The Best For Last"), it was largely business as usual — except that it wasn't, and his guests let him know it.

Two rather notable aw-shucks moments stood out, courtesy of regular guest Lanny Davis and former show producer-cum-"Morning Joe" co-host Willie Geist. Davis came on to argue strenuously in favor of Hillary Clinton, as is his wont, and at the end Davis surprised Tucker with a heartfelt tribute, saying that he thought it was "unfortunate that this network has stopped this program because, for me, being able to disagree agreeably is what you stand for. I think it's a great loss for all of us." Aw. Watch:

Is it us, or did Tucker look as ferklempt as Hillary Clinton at a New Hampshire Q&A? He recovered nicely (commercial breaks help with that), and after welcoming (and receiving kudos from) the Rev. Al Sharpton, The Hill's A.B. Stoddard, the LAT's Rosa Brooks, and "Washington D.C. Mayor for Life Marion Barry ("Why? Because frankly we kind of like Marion Barry"), he was ready to head into the final segment of the show, which really was meant to be a look-back. Here he welcomed Geist, joining him from New York, for a quick trip through some of the show's greatest hits from timeslots gone bye — but not before he gave Tucker a heartfelt tribute of his own:
Suffice it to say that I wouldn't be on this show, the 6 a.m. show or any show without you, your friendship and your advocacy... If you had told me three years ago that I'd be sitting in the front row of 'Dancing With The Stars' with a vested interest, angry with the results — without irony — I would have called you a fool, but that actually happened. Hang around Tucker Carlson enough, your life will be fun, I promise you that.

Aw. Man-love is sweet. Then they went on to watch clips of animals doing funny stuff. We'll show you that clip in a moment — enjoy a long-lost flash of bow-tie! (He lost it ages ago, AP writer, sheesh) — but before you get all sad, remember that Tucker really isn't going anywhere, because he'll still be a senior MSNBC correspondent popping up across the schedule, ostensibly including in his former timeslot. (Which is why Willie Geist said "I'll see you next week.") Stil, it was an ending, and the last word was Tucker, who gave a special shout-out to Senior Producer Jamieson Lesko and Producer Alexis Vena before signing off with brevity and class: "Well that's it! That's the end of our show. We won't be joining you on Monday. We'd like to thank you for tuning in all these years and to say that, if nothing else, I've sincerely enjoyed it.... Goodnight, and have a great weekend." You too, Tucker! See you on the other side.

We really need a voice for the other side. The kind of voice that William F. Buckley used to represent. A conservative view, but a truthful conservative view, even when the truth hurt their own side. Someone who had the courage to say what needed to be http://www.truthdig.com/eartotheground/item/20060724_buckley_bush_should_have_resigned/gned/

I don't think David Gregory's will be much of a show. He seems too chummy to ever ask any hard questions of republicans or democrats, especially those that have the power and are handing out talking points press releases like cotton candy.

I will miss Tucker and I've been missing the voice of William F. Buckley for quite a while now, even before he died. Who is out there to be a truthful dissenter?

Buh-bye to the trust fund right-wing preppy. I actually watched the final show just to make sure he was dead, in TV terms anyway (actually he's been walking dead ever since Jon Stewart handed his ass to him on Crossfire). I hate to admit that Tucker went out with a bit of class on his last show, but he did. But that doesn't make up for the total classlessness of his act over the many years. Maybe he and the equally smarmy and irritating Willie Geist can be alone together now. Note to MSNBC: Now when is Joe Scarborough getting fired?

I'm just so broken up over this... I don't know what to say.

The scary thing? Look at cable ratings. O'Reilly 3 mil, Hannity 2.4mil - Larry King 1.6 mil - Three other fox shows around a million viewers (Hume, Greta, Shep)

Olbermann 1 million.

Hardball 500k.

Tucker - 300k. +/-

My point is... Do trailer parks below the Mason Dixon line carry anything but Fox?

SO, does Tucker Pucker get his very own bunk in the Green Room, right beside that other pathetic rightwingnut Pat Buchanan, who seems to live on those Green Room freebies and has his very own little corner all equipped with with his crucifix and his signed picture of his joined-at-the-hip sister....she ran off with the Mormon.....a sad situation.

TUCKER WILL BE MISSED !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BY WHOM ??????? THE FAR RIGHT? LOGICALLY THINKING PEOPLE WHO FAILED TO UNDERSTAND HOW A ONE WAY THINKING PERSONAGE CAN SUDDENLY TRY TO TRANSFORM HIMSELF INTO A SUDDEN "LIBERTERIAN" IS BEYOND BELIEF. BY DISCARDING HIS PERKY BOW TIE, DID NOT CREATE ANOTHER ILLUSION, HIS DEMEANOR MAY HAVE TRIED TO BE DISGUISED BUT THE RANCOR AND BIAS ALWAYS WAS EVIDENT. HOPEFULLY, GREGORY DOES NOT BECOME CONTAMINATED WITH THAT " IRISH" BALONEY THAT HAS BEEN CONSISTENLY SLICED AND METED OUT TO THE PUBLIC, BY WAY OF RUSSERT, WILLIAMS, MATTHEWS AND NOW O;OLBERMAN (NEW CONVERT) AND ON ITS WAY, NEWLY APPOINTED jUDGE (?) ABRAMS. THE BIAS EMANATING FROM THIS NEWS AND CABLE STATION IS SO NONSENSICAL, THEY HAVE A BEVY OF SPEAKERS THAT ARE SO BIASED TOWARDS OBAMA, THAT YOU WONDER WHETHER THEY ARE BEING SUBSIDIZED BY OBAMA, BUT WE KNOW BETTER AND THERE IS THE SHADOW OF jOE WELCH (GE) HOVERING OR LURKING IN THE BACKGROUND, REST ASSURED, THE WOULD BE AND CURRENT MILLIONAIRES OF THIS STATION ARE IN "LOCKSTEP: " WITH THE POWERS THAT BE, MY FAMILY AND ALL MY FRIENDS HAVE TUNED NBC AND MSNBC , COMPLETELY OUT , OUT, GOOD RIDDANCE TO GOTCHA RUSSERT, NUTSY MATTHEWS AND AMBITIOUS HOLBERMAN AND THE SUPREME JUDGE ABRAMS, WELCOME POPE GREGORY, HOPE YOU KEEP YOUR COOL AND SENSES.

I didn't get to know him that well. But, with the abuse he has taken from the Libs, this guy can't be all bad!

Will look for you on MSNBC Tucker. I think you will do very well without an hour to fill. I have been a fan since Crossfire. I appreciate your sense of humor and your ability to talk to liberals and actually listen.

His high school level debate techniques have become to painful to watch in this, the twilight of the right wing loud mouth, that I'm glad his show is gone. Goodbye and good riddance!

Give Lanny a show! We need his point of view now more than ever.

Everybody else's shows are all about the same crap with different bozos shoving it to us, while they spit and chew people's heads off. Not one news channel has fair and balanced coverage. Enough already.
