A Final Farewell: Tucker Carlson Says Goodbye To His Show With Friends And A Look Back

I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Tucker Farewell

After four timeslot switches, a name change, two years of lackluster ratings, and one discarded bow-tie, Tucker Carlson's show on MSNBC drew to a close tonight after it was announced earlier this week that it would be replaced by an election-themed show hosted by NBC Senior White House Correspondent David Gregory. "Tucker," which was formerly known as "The Situation with Tucker Carlson" signed off with a minimum of fanfare, engaging the headlines of the day as per usual (Obama's Jeremiah Wright problem; McCain's travel abroad; who's more electable, Clinton or Obama?) and managing not to mention auto-erotic asphyxiation even once. Other than a quick mention at the top (and a chyron reading: "Welcome To Our Final Show! We've Truly Saved The Best For Last"), it was largely business as usual — except that it wasn't, and his guests let him know it.

Two rather notable aw-shucks moments stood out, courtesy of regular guest Lanny Davis and former show producer-cum-"Morning Joe" co-host Willie Geist. Davis came on to argue strenuously in favor of Hillary Clinton, as is his wont, and at the end Davis surprised Tucker with a heartfelt tribute, saying that he thought it was "unfortunate that this network has stopped this program because, for me, being able to disagree agreeably is what you stand for. I think it's a great loss for all of us." Aw. Watch:

Is it us, or did Tucker look as ferklempt as Hillary Clinton at a New Hampshire Q&A? He recovered nicely (commercial breaks help with that), and after welcoming (and receiving kudos from) the Rev. Al Sharpton, The Hill's A.B. Stoddard, the LAT's Rosa Brooks, and "Washington D.C. Mayor for Life Marion Barry ("Why? Because frankly we kind of like Marion Barry"), he was ready to head into the final segment of the show, which really was meant to be a look-back. Here he welcomed Geist, joining him from New York, for a quick trip through some of the show's greatest hits from timeslots gone bye — but not before he gave Tucker a heartfelt tribute of his own:
Suffice it to say that I wouldn't be on this show, the 6 a.m. show or any show without you, your friendship and your advocacy... If you had told me three years ago that I'd be sitting in the front row of 'Dancing With The Stars' with a vested interest, angry with the results — without irony — I would have called you a fool, but that actually happened. Hang around Tucker Carlson enough, your life will be fun, I promise you that.

Aw. Man-love is sweet. Then they went on to watch clips of animals doing funny stuff. We'll show you that clip in a moment — enjoy a long-lost flash of bow-tie! (He lost it ages ago, AP writer, sheesh) — but before you get all sad, remember that Tucker really isn't going anywhere, because he'll still be a senior MSNBC correspondent popping up across the schedule, ostensibly including in his former timeslot. (Which is why Willie Geist said "I'll see you next week.") Stil, it was an ending, and the last word was Tucker, who gave a special shout-out to Senior Producer Jamieson Lesko and Producer Alexis Vena before signing off with brevity and class: "Well that's it! That's the end of our show. We won't be joining you on Monday. We'd like to thank you for tuning in all these years and to say that, if nothing else, I've sincerely enjoyed it.... Goodnight, and have a great weekend." You too, Tucker! See you on the other side.

This article summarizes the reason that Tucker, a typical conservative cheerleading type, failed. He was in the entertainment business while pretending to discuss pressing issues of our country. Americans are surfieted with entertainment. We are surrounded by so much entertainment that it is no longer enjoyable. In fact we are tired of its incessant bombardment day after day on our public airwaves. We are bored with his predicatable routine and joyless laughter.
MSNBC needs to have a program that bombards us day after day with issues related with our declining Country, especially issues of debt and deficit spending, trade policies and trade deficits, issues of taxation that have resulted in penury for the middle American, corruption of the age of lobbyists and the pernicious smothering of public debate and divergent ideas by Washington special interest think tanks, the undeserved power of public unions and the outragerous of CEOs in both the public and private sectors, the swindles of Wall Street, the corruption of government and so on. Poll in ordinary Americans into the mix of specialist and experts.
Such a program would attract millions of significant others informing national consensus towards reclaiming our Republic. It would be a model for all future news programming as we go into hard times for our bereft country. Last, I expect a not insignificant consultant''s fee for sharing this proprietary knowledge.

He's no Buckley! never even came close to him. And i dont care if he's gone. But i trully would like to see somebody who like William F. Buckley. Smart, Articulate, and can hold a discussion without having to make a point by screaming louder than his opponent. I do not mind discussion comming from a republican, but it should be a contest of ideas. The stuff that the news pour's out day by day, just makes me feel sick. Dont republicans have smart people to supports their ideas without having to repeat what Fox News fear mongering. I might not know them, so if anybody has suggestion i am willing to hear. Even though i simpathize with liberals, i would like to hear intelligent ideas coming from the Right. But for the love of god! Please dont Hire more people like Tucker.

i agree, i too would *love* to see some articulate, erudite, intelligent, conservative debaters/pundits as you describe. true conservativism *does* have it's points and it gets stale really quickly when only rhuminating one's own viewpoint.
alas, what passes for the gop nowadays wouldn't know a real conservative if it bit them on the ass.

Someone more like William F Buckley?

If you want to watch someone who'll cal his dissenters a queer and threaten to punc them in the face, then I'm sure there's some pro-wrestling you can catch later in the evening

I am well aware that Buckley has made some outrageous coments. And im not saying that i support some of the stuff that he said. But he at least had a brain and a well trained mouth. Even if i dont support his points of views I still respect the manner in wich he delivered them.
Today you have people like O, Reilly, Scarborough, Dobbs, who are very good at persuading many people by shouting out a point until people believe in it.
I sorry but that is not a real discussion.

By the way, i have seen this video before, and i completely admire these two great minds, Buckley and Gore Vidal, challenging each other intellectually, even if they cross the line and insult each other.

Buckely got creamed by Chomsky, ever time they went head to head in a debate Chomsky ate him up and spit him out. I think some smart producer should put together a debate show and invite top left intellectuals to debate one topic per show with whomever the right wants to throw at them. You could have Chomsky go against the three top right wing thinkers and he'd still destroy them even at 3 against 1, have people like Amy Goodman, Juan Cole etc debating Kissinger and other war criminals and CEOs from big corporations, smart yet grossly immoral people...now that would get ratings...as for Tucker what a waste of time glad he's off ....Rachel Maddow would be a good replacement.

Tucker is better than Fox's Hannity and (what's his face)! These too, have no dignity or soul at all. They are as bad as Bill and Hillary Clinton! The slame the race card in your face every chance the have. and Hannity has this thing about HATEING HILLARY THAT REALLLY BOTHERS ME! But than what his face slams Obama every chance he get's! It's my guess the mud slinging has just began. The next article or video thay will show will be Monica L. doing Bill Clinton-------------they are that filthy. Ya, give me tucker Carlson any ol day To those two nut case's!

Without his family's connections and wealth, he'd have ended up the assistant night manager at Walgreen's somewhere. Buh-bye.

I like Tucker. He's a little nuts but he speaks his mind. I look forward to seeing him as a pundit on other shows.

Since I first saw him on CNN (I could barely tolerate him on Crossfire), I have thoroughly enjoyed Tucker Carlson.

From his desire to interview Al Sharpton or his insane glee in asking Mayor Barry, DC Mayor for life, his opinion: he is the wildest commentator I have ever watched on a MSM broadcast. He just doesn't take himself or his guests too seriously. Where most people take his dismissive tone as arrogant or holier than thou, he strikes me as the guy whose opinion is the most sincere.

Where I've had family and friends tell me my fascination with conservatives is unhealthy, he reminds me I could sit and fundamentally disagree without having to resort to yelling. I've always enjoyed Tucker when he stuck it to a guest that was stating an opinion or a point that is either logically inconsistent or politically indefensible. Even if he hails from some of the most liberal stock in the world (I really don't know), the man is at the very least interesting.

I hope he gets another gig somewhere other than Fox News (though I doubt they'd like his opinion independence). MSNBC missed the boat finding a sucessful slot and format for his show's brand of diversity in a line up of 5 white men: Joe Scarborough, Keith Olbermann, Chris Matthews, Dan Abrams, and now David Gregory.

I hope I don't have to wait too log to see him in the host chair again.

Well in the meantime, perhaps you might want to send this weasel some money so he can complete his college education, you surely wouldn't want your guy who hollared about folks getting ahead over more qualified folks to perpetually be the hypocrite he appears to be, having been given all of his opportunity when all of those college graduated minorities were knocking on the MSNBC door, only to turn away for a college drop-out. Get to steppin!!

On FOX, where Tucker belongs, he would be the classiest commentator they have. On MSNBC he was a left over from the failed FOX lite strategy of a previous management. GOOD RIDDANCE! Too bad Schuster messed up. Otherwise he might well have gotten the show. Olberman had him auditioning on his show twice.

Ha - I loved seeing this column! I have been mulling doing a feature on them for a while called "The Oddest Couple In TV News" - I just think it's amazing that a guy like that has been paired with a woman like her and it works so damn well. You really saw that relationship in action the other night on Abrams, actually, when Rachel rebuked Pat for his rudeness to Keli Goff. She drew on that relationship very effectively.

I hope it was just the first in a string of numerous MSNBC programs that need to be revamped and overhauled with some fresh faces and interview styles. Tucker had a tendency to use his denegrating laugh when he didn't agree with a guest. He always called himself a Libertarian. Now, if MSNBC would just do the same thing with Joe Scarborough, Keith Olbermann, Dan Abrams and Chris Matthews they would have a good start on revitalizing their old, tired lineup.

Tucker tried to get a picture of Ron Paul with prostitutes by taking advantage of a little chaos that happened at one of Rons "different types" of campaign stops in NEVADA in NOvember...Some may remember the prostitutes in the Limo with Tucker. They had pictures of this.....
Tucker tried to force his way over to Dr. Paul and he was pulling the girls over there with him...
He spoke to the girls the whole way over to meet Paul by telling them they would get to meet him...
Tucker had planned this, seemingly a neocon trick, and drove the prostitutes in a limo, which they rode from the hotel in, to the campaign stop.
This was all planned and was thwarted, but the story never saw the light of day..
..................................................................................................................................................................................
They were very excited and when they got in the club, Ron Pauls director saw them coming and cut them off at the last minute.
This type of picture in the press with Ron Paul holding prostitutes and signing autographs would have wrecked his campaign.
Tucker KNEW THIS.
It was an evil trick.......
GOOD RIDDANCE!

I can't remember what month I was watching Tucker's show (I think it was last Fall), and he was arguing with a member of Congress about Iraq. Tucker stated that the Iraqis were living in the Dark Ages and needed the US to teach them how to live in the modern world. The Congressman asked Tucker if he truly believed what just came out of his mouth, and Tucker replied, yes, he believed in his heart that the Iraqis needed to be taught how to live in the 21st Century. The Congressman was not amused, and neither was I.

Tucker, they just fired John Gibson at FAUX News. Why don't you go apply for a job there?
