I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Tucker Farewell

After four timeslot switches, a name change, two years of lackluster ratings, and one discarded bow-tie, Tucker Carlson's show on MSNBC drew to a close tonight after it was announced earlier this week that it would be replaced by an election-themed show hosted by NBC Senior White House Correspondent David Gregory. "Tucker," which was formerly known as "The Situation with Tucker Carlson" signed off with a minimum of fanfare, engaging the headlines of the day as per usual (Obama's Jeremiah Wright problem; McCain's travel abroad; who's more electable, Clinton or Obama?) and managing not to mention auto-erotic asphyxiation even once. Other than a quick mention at the top (and a chyron reading: "Welcome To Our Final Show! We've Truly Saved The Best For Last"), it was largely business as usual — except that it wasn't, and his guests let him know it.

Two rather notable aw-shucks moments stood out, courtesy of regular guest Lanny Davis and former show producer-cum-"Morning Joe" co-host Willie Geist. Davis came on to argue strenuously in favor of Hillary Clinton, as is his wont, and at the end Davis surprised Tucker with a heartfelt tribute, saying that he thought it was "unfortunate that this network has stopped this program because, for me, being able to disagree agreeably is what you stand for. I think it's a great loss for all of us." Aw. Watch:

Is it us, or did Tucker look as ferklempt as Hillary Clinton at a New Hampshire Q&A? He recovered nicely (commercial breaks help with that), and after welcoming (and receiving kudos from) the Rev. Al Sharpton, The Hill's A.B. Stoddard, the LAT's Rosa Brooks, and "Washington D.C. Mayor for Life Marion Barry ("Why? Because frankly we kind of like Marion Barry"), he was ready to head into the final segment of the show, which really was meant to be a look-back. Here he welcomed Geist, joining him from New York, for a quick trip through some of the show's greatest hits from timeslots gone bye — but not before he gave Tucker a heartfelt tribute of his own:
Suffice it to say that I wouldn't be on this show, the 6 a.m. show or any show without you, your friendship and your advocacy... If you had told me three years ago that I'd be sitting in the front row of 'Dancing With The Stars' with a vested interest, angry with the results — without irony — I would have called you a fool, but that actually happened. Hang around Tucker Carlson enough, your life will be fun, I promise you that.

Aw. Man-love is sweet. Then they went on to watch clips of animals doing funny stuff. We'll show you that clip in a moment — enjoy a long-lost flash of bow-tie! (He lost it ages ago, AP writer, sheesh) — but before you get all sad, remember that Tucker really isn't going anywhere, because he'll still be a senior MSNBC correspondent popping up across the schedule, ostensibly including in his former timeslot. (Which is why Willie Geist said "I'll see you next week.") Stil, it was an ending, and the last word was Tucker, who gave a special shout-out to Senior Producer Jamieson Lesko and Producer Alexis Vena before signing off with brevity and class: "Well that's it! That's the end of our show. We won't be joining you on Monday. We'd like to thank you for tuning in all these years and to say that, if nothing else, I've sincerely enjoyed it.... Goodnight, and have a great weekend." You too, Tucker! See you on the other side.

Tucker was the best conservative political host on any network, its a shame they couldn't get his program to work at MSNBC. I'm a liberal, but I thought Tucker was always fairly polite and let people make opposing points without it getting ugly. David Gregory's new show is probably not gonna be as good. Good luck Tucker.

the964kid -- a "liberal" , who thinks Bowtie boy is the "best" at 'anything' -- I think "not" (on both accounts). There is no such thing as a "good conservative political host".

Go away Tucker , and don't let the door hit you in the ass on your way out (and don't come back).

..."I'm a liberal, but I thought Tucker was always polite"...

OXYMORONIC.

No. Your not a 'LIBERAL'! (TUCKER is never polite!)

Should have kept the Bow Tie

Huh? The few times that I've seen him, he's a smarmy little self righteous argumentative prick that talks all over his guests.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:23 AM on 03/15/2008

Darn! That could apply to Olberman or Matthews, or Abrahms, or Scarboro, or...

You hit upon the problem with these talk shows. They invite a guest and the host talks.

Tucker, don't let the door hit you in the ass.

I'm not sure that I'd agree that Tucker was the best conservative poliitical host on any network, but I too am a liberal and thought Tucker was usually fairly polite and did let people make opposing points without it getting ugly. He didn't usually rudely talk over everyone like Chris Matthews. I don't think David Gregory was a good choice for this new show. I find him to be pompous.

Is this guy high??? I have seen Tucker on Bill Maher's show and he tries to talk over all the other guests and is very rude. He is another right wing commentator who shouts down people instead of debating. (Like limbaugh etc)

Good Riddance - altho he is a cutie!

That's absolute bs. Tucker has never done that. Not on Maher or anywhere else. You are a liar.

I've always disliked Tucker's smarmy approach, but he went out well.

Tucker signed off with "brevity and classs." That is the first time I have heard those words associated with his show.

Tucker always seemed totally in love with Willie Geist.

Although, I would likely be politically and socially quite anti-thetical to most of Mr. Carlson's positions, he is a refreshing personality, in that he is able to develop intellectual discourse and debate without resorting to personal attack. And, for that reason alone, it is clear that Mr. Carlson will not be lacking for individuals or organizations asking for his services. Unfortunately, the North American media market is now dominated by men like O'Reilly, Limbaugh, and Beck - angry, ignorant, bigoted individuals who are able to have a loyal following of a minority of citizens but that is enough for broadcasters to sell to advertisers. And afterall it is a business, news and analysis ceased to be about public service a long time ago, I look forward to reading Mr. Carlson's articles, books, and postings in the future, and I am certain he will be back on television or radio in the near future.

Yeah, I guess maybe calling John Stewart a "dick" wasn't really a personal attack after all.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:24 AM on 03/15/2008

Dear "Perurabo",
You are absolutely correct, the Stewart comment was a personal attack, for which I believe Mr. Carlson made ammends to Mr. Stewart. To judge any individual by a singular or even a few events in a life rather than assessing the entire breadth of work is not an principled manner of analysis. In other words, get over yourself, John Stewart is one of the most brilliant, funny, and successful men in America, and as much as I like Mr. Carlson, Mr. Stewart's verbal skills far surpass that of Mr. Carlson, it would be the equivalent of locking Lewis Black (during one of his rants) in a tiny box with a baby hamster. It is in profoundly poor taste to continue to attack someone when they have just suffered a personal or professional loss - old world tradition - to good enemies and better friends raise a glass - Good Luck Tucker - see you soon.

He did call John Stewart, John Kerry's butt boy.

I wouldn't characterize Tucker as smarmy, maybe bombastic.

Lanny Davis is correct. I disagree with Tucker on nearly everything but the guy was fair and willing to truly question his own beliefs. You people that rip on him for being a "preppy from a rich family" are just as bad as Hanity when he makes BS attacks on liberals. If you make attacks like that it just shows your ignorance because you clearly don't watch his show. If all conservatives were like Tucker this would be a much better world.

Tucker didn't annoy me as much as most conservative talkers. He did tend to ignore facts if they didn't support the point he was trying to make. But of course he is conservative, so you pretty much have to ignore facts at some level if you are going to maintain that viewpoint.
