I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Graham

Former Sen. Bob Graham is staying neutral in the Democratic presidential race. But when it comes to defining the qualities that make a good commander-in-chief, he's espousing talking points that sound eerily similar to Barack Obama's.

"I don't believe there is a school you can go to, to train to be commander-in-chief," Graham said in an interview with the Huffington Post. "I think the qualities you are looking for would include, judgment, the willingness to surround yourself with strong people, listening to a diversity of ideas and then forming a conclusion. I think curiosity is important.

"If there had been a little more curiosity in the fall 2002 -- if the questions had been asked -- [it] would have raised a lot of suspicions," he said, referencing the Iraq war authorization vote. "I think you have to look to see whether those qualities exist. And if they do, you have reason to believe that the person who has those qualities would become an effective commander-in-chief."

Graham, who headed the Senate Intelligence Committee in the run up to Iraq, famously declared his war opposition after reading the National Intelligence Estimate, a document he thought did not make the case (and one that Sen. Hillary Clinton has acknowledged not reading). That aside, Graham noted that "experience" in and of itself was not a prerequisite for becoming leader of America's armed forces.

"If you look at recent presidents, certainly George W. Bush didn't have any commander-in-chief experience, neither had Bill Clinton," he said. "George H. W. Bush had served in the military. Reagan didn't serve in the military. Carter was an Annapolis graduate. He was probably as close to what you would consider prepared to be commander-in-chief of the recent presidents."

The Florida Democrat was less hesitant to weigh in on the other major campaign issue of the day -- what to do about Florida's delegates -- in part because he simply didn't have the magic bullet to resolve the crisis. But he did offer some detailed analysis and colorful metaphors.

On Florida's decision to move up its primary and the DNC's retaliation of stripping the state of its delegates:

"This was like a bank robbery. The Republicans [who controlled the legislature and governor's chair and pushed to move up the primary] were in the vault, putting their money in the bags. The Democrats were in the car out on the street, ready to drive the bank robbers away after the heist. The bank robbers in the vault got a light tap on the wrist [from the RNC] and we got a chainsaw that took off our right arm."

Story continues below

On what to do to get those delegates counted at the convention:

"Our options are not many and none of them are very good. There has been a lot of interest in maybe a mail-in ballot because it is not inexpensive. But apparently there are a lot of legal problems with doing a mail-in ballot [Florida's entire House delegation opposes the idea as well]... The other two options are to try and run a full scale primary, which will be very expensive and difficult because many counties use this period in the spring and summer to switch out machinery and a number of counties say they can't physically put on an election... The third is to have a caucus, but that has never been our tradition, and it doesn't seem to have gotten much lift."

So what should be done?

"We are in a real mess. If Michigan and Florida are sufficiently teed off as a result of it, then it changes enough votes to put them in the Republican column. That represents about 45 or so electoral votes, which would be more than the margin of victory in most recent presidential elections. So it is a very bad place for Democrats. We are waiting for the Huffington Post to give us a creative option."

Um... Don't hold your breath.

Former Sen. Bob Graham is staying neutral in the Democratic presidential race. But when it comes to defining the qualities that make a good commander-in-chief, he's espousing talking points that sound...

Kalima.... decided to answer your question at the top of the thread.......

Regarding nohat.... sheesh.... The only thing that aggrivated me about the whole thing was how he went off on another thread and said we had a big fight... which was so not true..... and you make a good point about how he really freaked when I asked him if he really was for Senator Obama....

Where is AdLib with our drinks.... jeez.... we really need to get a cabana boy around here..... ; )

James Oppenheim. 1882–

93. The Slave

THEY set the slave free, striking off his chains...
Then he was as much of a slave as ever.

He was still chained to servility,
He was still manacled to indolence and sloth,
He was still bound by fear and superstition, 5
By ignorance, suspicion, and savagery...
His slavery was not in the chains,
But in himself....

They can only set free men free...
And there is no need of that: 10
Free men set themselves free.

Hey all!

Interesting that the video and audio of Rev Wright's extreme outbursts, which have been around for some time, surface everywhere in the media right after Hillary has a Geraldine problem with race.

Has anyone heard who has flooded the media with all of this and why they may have done so at this moment in time?

BTW, I think Hillary has brought the level of this race so low that nothing is shocking or surprising anymore, the "shock and awe" factor is pretty well exhausted so I don't think she can outrage the public, via such Rovian tactics, against Obama to any greater degree...and at this degree, she is still losing wherever racists aren't in the majority.

My feeling is that people are exhausted of the BS, it may kill a degree of enthusiasm for the Dems and Obama in the short term but when Obama's up against McCain and the stark contrasts in issues are at the forefront (against the backdrop of lots of xenophobia and racism), I think Dems and Indies will get fired up and ready to go once again.

I imagine Fox News was motivated by the fact that Olbermann was trying to stop the rot, the racist stuff; Fox News didn't want it stopped; so they dug up this video--although I did read somewhere that ABC broke the story first. First, but Fox News loves to saturation coverage. Some news outlets want to keep it stirred up all the time. Had they left it alone, we might have had a break from all the racist stuff. Hillary would have looked like the anti-Christ if she had continued on with it after Olbermann exposed her---excuse me, her advisors---before the world.

OMG US Troops will be there FOREVER!
According to NBC Article:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23638351
The U.S. and Iraqi government intent is to chip away at al-Qaida until it is reduced to "almost a nonentity," Army Lt. Gen. Ray Odierno said March 4 shortly after finishing his tour as the No. 2 U.S. commander in Iraq. "Unfortunately with these terrorist organizations, they will always be there at some level."
Demonstrating anew their remarkable staying power, the militants are thought to be behind attacks in recent days in Baghdad and beyond, including bombings in the capital March 7 that killed at least 68 people.
I do not know where the following Al Qaida strengths came from. Up until this article the maximum number of Al Qaida in Iraq that has been reported was 6000 in 2004-5. The most recent numbers reported was 2000 at the start of the surge in March 2007. Since the surge the US Military has claimed they have killed or captured about 1000 Al Qaida.
According to the General, Al-Qaida in Iraq, which did not exist as a coherent group before U.S. troops invaded in March 2003, probably now numbers no more than 6,000, according to U.S. intelligence estimates. It may have been closer to 10,000-strong before the severe pummeling it took last year, when it lost its main bases of Sunni Arab support. It controls no cities but is still active in pockets through much of central and northern Iraq.
If anyone can figure out how Al Qaida has grown by 4000 since the start of the surge please send me the links.

The problem with many Americans today is they chose a hero, and then shut their eyes and ears and accept anything that person does, simply because they refuse to acknowledge ANY information that might shed a less than angelic light on their hero.

The rebuttals to this ugly story of Reverend Wright's notorious sermons are so weak as to seem like people are part of some Branch Davidian cult. This stuff is so clear cut, it shows Obama in an extremely bad light, and belies the notion he is some uniter. His spiritual leader certainly isn't a uniter, and Obama made NOT ONE move to change his affiliation from this church or pastor (a mamber of his campaign team!!!) until some pesky reporter actually brought the issue up.

Barak Obama is no leader. He is a huckster! And he wants us all now to "Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!".

Barack's old favorite isn't a favorite anymore. Why? Because Americans found out about the guy! You think he's telling the truth about not having a clue about this guy's politics on 9/11, AIDS, African-Americans...? You must be clinical! You love the guy so much, his "God Damn America" uncle Wright doesn't bother you at all.

Sychophants will follow their leader into the deepest doodoo. Well you go right ahead. But I'll tell you this, your hero's campaign is over. This will, and should be, very central in the general election campaign, (if he beats Hillary-and who knows about that?).

So... who do you support? And why?

Just because the Senator does not want to leave the church that he has belonged to for many years, and in which he has celebrated so many milestones in his life.... like his marriage to Michelle, the baptism of his children, among other things.... just based on something his pastor said.... which by the way... if you listen to the whole sermon, instead on soundbites on FOX..... you might have a better, and complete understanding of it............ Oh, but why bother with the truth..... it is so much easier to express false outrage based on limited facts, and what other people tell you to believe...........

Obama himself claims never to have heard any of these things, ever. Well, how about that! But now that he HAS heard them, he repudiates them completely, and he's even thrown the Reverend off his campaign team! (He didn't even care about context, which you clearly do!)

Who do I support? Well no one at the moment. I don't look forward to 4-8 years of Clinton scandal mongering, or 4-8 years of Obama sychophancy and idealistic ineptitude ala Jimmy Carter, or McCain's do nothing on health care and the economy.

I'm just quite disgusted that the Democratic party is so stupid as to lose great candidates to celebrities almost from the get-go! Now they have a great chance to once again pull defeat from the jaws of victory.
Unbelievable!

Creative option? Ok, vote for Bert! He's been in the military, served honorably, did NOT go to Iraq, CAN spell 'nuclear' correctly, repeatedly, without outside assistance, can use maps, clipboards, and even a COMPASS without incurring significant self-injury OR getting lost! And, and IF I get the gig, we're going to have a little fun, and the military will be in the business of making their own biofuels! Let's see, what else can we create, here, how about a little happy havoc by having Congress 'dress down' and do what needs done? Denim 'day', for a full year! But wait, there's more, order now and we'll also create bunches more jobs by going back into domestic manufacturing, in a BIG way, with a 'green' twist!
OPEC? How about NO-PEC?!?! I believe that this country can, and should, say 'bye-bye' to oil imports, and under MY administrationer, that's exactly what we'll do! Exotic business deals, selling american citiznerers down the river for a tanker-ful of bunker fuel? For me, it just doesn't make sense! Not when we've got all this cool domestic potential, with a little work and co-operation from the coastal states, I fully believe we can just about run the entire country off of wave and wind power, and to make up the difference, people can put a fire in the fireplace on really cold nights, using presto logs made out of old Ted Kennedy speeches! Recycling, don't-cha know, and, and, if Selected, you won't have to worry about the White House press secretary ever being boring or unknowledgeable, we'll take guest speakers, nab people out of Hollywood, SNL, news anchors, it'll be a week-long gig they can put on their resume, fun at parties, a-MAZE your FRIENDS!
Space program? You darn skippy, hey, Richard Branson, Denny's on the Moon! 1/6th Gee coffee while you look at Earthrise out the window! Space waffles, baby!

Mortgage? Who cares? Call the Army, see if they have any Big Tents and cots left, set up an Army field kitchen and so forth, let the people that want to get out from under of their mortgage problem and come stay over at Uncle Sam's house for a few months until they get their situations figured out!

I got the creative, give me 6 months, if I haven't proven myself by then, have Congress throw me right back out the door on my duffel bag! I won't protest, I won't fight it, and I WILL put that 'in writing'!

Vote for me!

Don't be misled, Hillary knew this was a wrong headed vote but chose to do so for purely political reasons. Notice that the presidential contenders all voted for the war, they didn't want to appear weak and they all saw the US overwhelming the enemy. However Obama though more deeply and recognised that there were going to be ongoing consequences after the war. Hillary did not envision the ongoing consequences, here we have to blame her for lack of judgment. But make no mistake, Hillary knew this war was wrong, but chose to triangulate, bad idea. I wonder if Hillary though of the soldiers that were going to die just so that she could maintain her viability to run for president.

Yes, poor judgment, no question. But the main question of the 'C-in-C Test' is:
'Are you willing to commit US forces to war (whatever the reason)?' The only correct
answer is 'Yes'. 28 other ambitious, would-be-President Demos voted to authorize
troops to go to war in Iraq. A better question would be '... to war WHEN THERE ARE
GOOD REASONS', but that's asking to much apparently.

It's understandably a tough question, because obviously death & destruction will be
the result. What makes it so hard is that the only correct answer is still YES, if you
want to be President. It would be so much better to have employed good judgment,
to have realized that this was just an uncalled-for war. Too much bad judgment, ma'am.

split the delegates 50-50 and be done with it.
Hopefully the states will think the next time they try to play leapfrog.
I think Hillary failed the commander in Chief test. She not only advocated for and voted for the war but, never bothered to read the very document that was the most important one to read. And that was because she wanted to build up her hawkishness for her presidential run. A purely cynical political move.
Like all things the Clintons do. They never do anything that is just for the good of the country or because they have any convictions. They only operate out of political positioning.
Hillary totally lacks good judgment and ability. She is even passing off a phony resume that is being found out.

If Florida and Michigan only concern it that the delegates be seated, then this would be an excellent idea. However if Hillary is given a 6 delegate advantage over Obama, I still won't cry, this would save a lot of money and time to instead start the planning of the general election.

But alas we know better, seating the delegates is not their main concern, supporting Hillary is.

Correct, as it stands, MI and FL are worth little to Clinton regarding Delegates. McCain can't repudiate Bush after literally and figuratively embracing both his physical person and his policies. Why nust these seldom well-meaning surrogates say such inflammatory comments about the opposition candidate, unless they have the tacit approval of HC and/or Wolfson/Ickes? The latter two are known for their Rovian techniques. Why can't the good Democrats of Penn see the writing on the wall and not cause this destructive campaign to continue to provide video fodder for the repubs in the general campaign? Dems should be incensed and terrified of HC on a national Rebublican add stating that he (McCain) is a more qualified C in C that Obama.
Why is HC either: A) so desperate to win that she will out her Party for personal gain, or B) so deluded that her wins in the primaries show that she is any kind of frintrunner?
Please, Pennsylvanians, end this race in Obama's favor beforew it tears our Great Democratic apart.

As someone originally from the Ozarks in their 50's and pretty damned pale, the good Rev. Wright said NOTHING offensive to me in ANY of the clips I've seen. The man gets excited, but it doesn't put any real hate and NO LIES in what he says. MSM pundits and opportunistic politicians attributing those qualities are the ones guilty of hate and lies.

ANY white person believing they understand what it means to be a black person in OUR country, where we ALL know plenty of prejudice STILL exists, is delusional and lying to themselves.

Rev. Wright said we've brought attacks on OUR country by OUR behavior towards other countries, and that is 100% correct. The statement by the preznutz that, "They hate us for OUR freedom", is a huge crock of crap.

If republiscums are stupid enough to try and use the Rev. Wright's words against Barack, they only need be reminded that Revs. Robertson and Hagee have said 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina, respectively, were 'their' god's punishment for tolerating gay people.
Now THAT is TRUE hatred and bigotry, and JohhnyMac couldn't wait to pander to their followers.

Well said! I heard it too and found nothing offensive either. I heard the facts about the
difficulties of growing up as an AA even though he was raised by the white side of his
family. Sometimes it's harder for people who are of mixed race. My sister is married to
a Chinese man born in Singapore. Her three children suffered greatly from racist remarks
throughout their school years and It wasn't all that long ago either.

Obama just said "I don't repudiate the man ..." speaking on Keith Olbermann's show. The pastor married him and his wife, christened his kids, and "is his mentor". OMG. So, he thinks this guy is okay, but doesn't like some of his words? What? You're known by the company you keep, period. I suppose the head of the KKK said some reasonable things, but I have no problem repudiating the entire KKK, regardless of any good they have ever done. This is the beginnning of the end of Obama. "God damn America..." is language that no one, no one in this country should ever say. It is completely disgusting. I'm sorry I voted for Obama for Senator .... and will not for President.

My point in writing what I did, was to show how silly people are being..... People who are choosing Hillary as there candidate are latching onto anything they can in order to "prove" that Senator Obama is unfit to lead the country.......... Like what the Reverend has said in some of his sermons....... which, personally, I think people are exhibiting much false outrage over...........

As if I am supposed to believe that the Reverend dictates everything Senator Obama does, and will do.... I do not think so...

Is there anyone in your life that you have disagreed with what they said, yet you still remain friends?

How is what the Reverend said any relation to the KKK? Talk about exaggeration and over dramatization from the Clinton camp. You people are really grasping at straws. I have yet to understand why anyone is professing outrage at the Reverend's comments. As a white agnostic feminist, I don't think what the Reverend said was untruthful or inflammatory.

Comparing the Rev. Wright to the KKK is a PERFECT example of the all too real REAL bigotry that's still very much alive in OUR country. However, I should thank you for providing this lesson in the kind of close-minded prejudice that has afflicted people of color since this country was founded.

Do you have any idea what still being racially profiled by TODAY'S police for being in the 'wrong' neighborhood feels like, or do you even comprehend that insane mandatory crack-cocaine laws we have NOW were designed as a direct attack on urban black people. Senator Kennedy does, and at least he and some others DON'T like it and are trying to change it.

It's obvious you have NO clue there is a completely different America for 'whites' than there is people of color. I work with some highly decorated and patriotic friends that worked their entire lives for the defense of this country, and yet though elderly and well to do enough now, they're STILL profiled in their own upscale neighborhood.

Since when OUR Government invaded, occupied, mass murdered and destroyed a country for THEIR natural resources, and wrecked OUR military claiming it was part of the war on terror, I've been DAMNING those criminals every day since.
And, saying 'god' in front of it means nothing to me, because I don't believe in a fairy tale invisible man in the sky, anyway.

Guess what, I've given MY life to the defense of OUR country, also.

Go vote republiscum, you're sounding like one.

I've said God damn America on a number of ocassions. During Vietnam, this Iraq War, Reagan selling of our public land to oil and mineral interests for pennies on the dollar, invading Grenada, giving oil companies tax breaks and on and on. I love my couintry, but there are a lot of things wrong in it and I'm not going to blindly salute just because some fart with a pin on his lapel says I should.

The Rev. Wright is outspoken, so what? How many people you figure he killed?
